editing player instructions?

Recommended Posts

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere. I'm a seasoned FMer but for the life of me I cannot fathom how to edit the default player instructions in some (not every?) position when I choose a new tactic. The new screen has some options greyed/greened out by default I guess because those are suggestions for the role I have chosen for my player. How do I override/change these? Thanks

So I may want my advanced forward to dribble less as he's not that proficient in that regard, or I might want my central defender on defend duty to get further forward when the team has the ball? I realise that in previous versions of the game there were always moves that were already active for the role but now it seems there are additional options such as when the player/team has the ball for which there are NO alterable instructions....

A centerback on defence duty that you want to get forward would mean he is no longer resembling anything like a cb on defend duty... makes very little sense.

Don't get me wrong, I can understand where people are coming from, but if you select centre back on defend, that role comes with certain expectations.

For a cb to get forward, you would need a different role..

The standard come back from this is usually ' well I want a cb on defend to do what I want' ... which is a non starter tbh.. as at the end of the day, cb on defend is just the label given to that set of instructions. Changing the instructions means the name of the role is meaningless.

I don't think it was ever possible (after the change to roles only) to ask a central defender to make runs forward. It's not currently possible though, unless you can maybe alter the behaviour with PPMs, though I haven't tried.

I also found recently that an Advanced Forward has run often locked in and a Poacher should, IIRC, too. It hasn't affected my forwards who don't dribble that well, because they're usually pulling wide or through on goal rather than dribbling at defenders.

Im sorry but as a football coach who has managed an under 8s team.

Tactics are vital and so is the freedom to have players do what you would like.

Maybe you should get rid of player roles and just leave the player instructions blank.

Look at the way pep sets his team up you can have a cb that gets further forward when attacking but is a cb when defending.

There seems to be no transition of attacking and defending on fm16 only what you want a player to do when attacking.

Remove the defaults on player instructions as you can have some target men dribble more get further forward etc.

Same as an inside forward he can dribble less not more same as he can cross more often.

Your trying to be to fancy with how players play on this just stick to the basics.

Bassicly what im saying is give us our freedom back to choose how we want players to play not how you think they should play and what they should do.

At the end of the day the customer is always right so please just give us our freedom in this respect.

The classic tactics did just that freedom with the sliders as soon as you introduced these fancy names and default player instructions it went for me the wrong way.

Someone more knowledgeable than me about the match engine, please feel free to correct me, but the problem is that you are much smarter and more flexible than the AI. Allowing total freedom to minutely tweak every aspect of tactics adds a level of complexity and granularity that a human brain can handle much better than an AI, or at least the AI as it currently is in FM.

Limiting the options makes a level playing field between the human and the AI and reduces the risk of human players finding obscure exploits.

Also the roles as they are set up cover a wide range of player roles. I wonder if given the freedom to adjust anything and everything how many people would come up with something that was significantly different from what we already have. And if it was different, whether it actually made any sense.

But let us not forget that actually there is quite a degree of customization available in the player roles. If the instructions that you are trying to apply don't exist in the role you think they should be in, have a look at the other roles – some are pretty flexible. For instance, Wide Midfielder gives quite a wide range of options in player instructions if I recall and you can create a lot of variety there.

Anyway; what I'm trying to say really is that the options might seem too limited (I'm not entirely convinced by that, personally) but that if they are limited then that is for a very good reason. It is really easy to say to a software developer 'let me do what I want'; it is insanely difficult for that software developer to give you that.

If you have the patience you can usually find the roles and duties complimented by PI's to get a player to play as you want.

For example, a TM who dribbles is basically a Complete Forward. If you put your team on direct passing and to cross more you have the same effect.

Likewise an IF who dribbles less and crosses more is fairly straightforward forward. Select a Wide Midfielder on Attack with get further forward, dribble less and cross more. Even if he sits in a different strata on the chalkboard, his position on pitch will be that of an IF

Thanks for the help guys :)

Pingdinho is right sometimes i think like its real life when really its just AI ;)

I suppose since the changes i have always gone on player best postions, player best roles.

I used the star ability to asses players ability in them roles.

Never really looked at tinkering about with the roles and what i could and couldnt do to give me more freedom.

I have since realised that the best roles, postions and ability dont really matter.

They are just a guidline really ;)

If you play it like as old look at the attributes like you had to in older versions to determine postions etc.

Then you can get more of a grasp on it i suppose i just became lazy as player roles, ability, best positions and the stars got introduced.

I stoped playing it like i used to, stopped training players to play in postions i wanted and let the game do it for me.

So your input has opened my easy wider to the game as a whole and now i can play it to a whole new level.

Maybe they should introduce a role called attacking midfielder wide, Excactly the same as the wide midfield role just able to play it not just in ml/mr postion but in amr/aml also.

Hears to the new fm17 and allot more hours of fun.

I just need to stop being lazy letting the game do things for me and explore more ways of playing the game to better my football knowledge.
