Goals scored from rebound from own shots in real-life?

Recommended Posts

A goal I've seen a lot in Football Manager, and still do, is when player scores from rebounds from their own shots.

Does anyone have any statistics on how often this happens in real life? Very common in FM is players approaching at an angle from one of the sides, shoots, keeper rebounds to same player which shoots again and then either scores or another rebound comes back, and then he can shoot again. I've seen up to three rebounds back to the same player.

Well, this never seem to happen to my own players, but the AI scores a lot of these goals against me. For instance, Sturridge shoots, Hart saves but rebounds back to Sturridge which shoots again, Hart then saves again but rebounds again to Sturridge which shoots again and scores.

If you can find the official statistic we'd be very interested in knowing it - we have a number of details for 'real life' stats, but some just aren't really easily available.

What he said. Tried doing all sorts of google searches and whoscored searches but couldn't find a 'Shot -> Rebound -> Shot -> Goal' statistic. Might need to watch MOTD for a few weeks and count the number of goals that are scored like this ;)

Reminds me of a penalty incident I had on my current save. The penalty taker strikes the ball hard and low, it hits the diving keeper and then bounces straight back out to the feet of the penalty taker. Does he smash home the rebound whilst the keeper is grounded??

No, he stands there with the ball at his feet for what seems like an eternity, before the defenders clear the ball. Very frustrating!!

I have seen goals IRL where a player has shot and then had the rebound fallen to him, but I can not recall many - and in all situations, the situation is quite different to what is happening in FM.

In RL- a shot is made, the goalkeeper makes a rebound, but very rarely go directly back to the attacker 5 yards away, and certainly not in often with both correct angle and correct pace for the attacker to be able to control the ball. The most similar situations I've seen is when the player chases the ball for a sec or has to move a bit to catch it. And rarely with other defenders around him.

In FM - a shot is made at something what appears to be a flat, brick wall, because the ball bounces straight back to the attacker. Now this could happen IRL also, but not that often. And not 2-3-4 times in a row. I have several of these goals against me every season. Sometimes it is not a goal, but it is still the same player that gets the ball back straight to his feet 2-3 times. Even when defenders are all around him.

Sure it hit the keeper? Law 14 states that the penalty taker can't touch the ball again until it hits another player. So if it didn't hit the keeper, he was just obeying the laws of the game. If it did then I'd chalk it up to a slow reaction time.

I'll double check, but I'm pretty sure it came back off the keeper (rather than the crossbar).
