Conceding early goals

Recommended Posts

I'm currently experiencing something I've never had on FM before. I know it must be my fault but can't work out how to fix it.

For the past 10 games i have without fail conceded a goal within the first 15 minutes. Many are literally straight from kick off, some a little later, but whether I'm playing relegation fodder or title chasers there is a goal and I can't work out why.

I'm Villa in my second season playing a 433 counter with Klopp inspired Gegenpress.

Here's the basic set up (sorry at work so no screen grabs):

SK (D)

FB (S)

CD (X)

CD ©

WB (s)

CM (S)

CM (D)

CM (S)

IF (S)

AP (A)

DF (S)

Mentality: Counter

Shape: Very Fluid

TI: Higher tempo, Slightly higher D line, Close down much more, Stay on Feet, Mark tighter, Be more disciplined.

I've tried taking a different approach with team talks, playing with mentality, everything I can think of but without fail. The strange thing is it's only just happening. I have a good bunch of players - we finished sixth first season and hovering there again second) but this run is costing me dear as the opposition basically has a 1 or 2 goal headstart for me to overcome. I was on course for Champions League but now struggling to even make UEFA cup and it's putting a very sour note on the end of what's been a great season.

Please help!

Is there a pattern at all? Is it caused by mistakes with pressing leaving gaps? Are the CM (S) players leaving the CM (D) with too much to do? Is it individual mistakes? Is Staying On Feet allowing the AI to waltz through?

The system looks reasonably balanced. There will be the inevitable space behind an Attack Duty player in the AML/R position, but that's mitigated to an extent by the Duty behind (especially if the FB (S) rather than WB (S) is behind the AP).

At what point did the turnaround in fortune occur? At the midway point in the season or afterwards?

Thanks RT. I need to do some diving in to see the trend but a few things I've noticed.

1. You're right a fair few come from crosses from my left. Where I have an AP (A) and WB (S). I'm going to dial WB (s) to FB (s) but any other suggestions?

2. The rest seem to be a mixture of mistakes, screamers and failed pressing. I can take the failed pressing, it's part of the risk / reward of the system - but it seems to work the rest of the game so I just wondered if I was doing anything wrong from the off.

The turnaround happened around February. It had been a long season with a good Uefa cup run, Carling Cup run and league run. Squad was inevitably run down but just seemed to turn on a sixpence one day and it's stuck ever since.

My stock answer always seems to be: Why use AML/R if you can modify ML/R to get what you want? You can use Wide Playmaker at ML/R, so may benefit from dropping that player back a stratum. That way you can leave him on Attack, but get him to track back.

Possibly a mix of tired legs and maybe a bit of nervousness. Have you been able to rotate much, or is the squad too thin? What is the Body Language widget telling you about the players in matches?

Hadn't thought of nerves. It is a very VERY young squad with a couple of key guys injured so that might make sense.

I know I have had the AML/R to ML/R discussion with you before and by and large agree entirely BUT in this case I thought with the high press that having players in those positions would be advantageous? Similarly to how Klopp at Liverpool played two AM in the match versus City - which has been my rough template.

You're broadly right, I guess it's a question of what matters most and trying to identify what works best. Try to see how well your AML/R tackle and intercept on the flanks, and then try to see if they are culpable in any form for the goals you concede. Then see what happens if you do drop them back and measure the same stuff again. Probably not at this critical phase of the season - maybe try a throwaway FMT save to test it out and see if you can draw any conclusions (only test it in competitive matches as pre-season isn't really a useful barometer of a system).
