Struggling to achieve successful results

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I am new to the Football Manager scene in general, however followed European football for many years so do posses a good footballing understanding. However after toying around with some minor saves with LLM sides I am really struggling, I find no tactic choice to be reliable, difficulty assessing which individuals are considered 'decent' players at a low level such as English League 2 and below, I mean their attributes aren't exactly great so spotting a good player seems a lot harder in my eyes, unless there is something I am missing out on, and quite frankly I believe I just don't have the tactical game knowledge just quite yet. I obviously want to improve and learn however will choosing big clubs (i.e Barcelona, Man City, Bayern) help me achieve this or should I just jump straight into the deep end? I have tried to watch full games and attempt to see what is going on and causing such poor results but in all honesty I don't quite know what to look for. Hope someone can give me some advice and help me out!

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum.

It'll be worth reading the sticky threads in the Tactics & Training forum to start with. If you're struggling it is also a good idea to start a thread with as much information as possible. This is also outlined in one of the sticky threads.

If you're just starting out I would recommend trying things out with a big club. This way you can get a feel for all the features while still hopefully having some success. The biggest thing for me when I started was learning all the things to do in order to set up at the start of a save.

As far as player quality down the leagues, it's all relative. Look at some of the best performing players in the league to get an idea of what a "good" player is at that level. Now mind you that can be misleading as at that level as a very mediocre looking striker might always perform well. Any LLM folks correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that hidden attributes like consistency have more of an impact on player performance in the lower leagues.

Another tip for scouting players at that level is focus only on the stats that are crucial to their position. A striker might get you 30 goals at that level with surprisingly low physicals/mentals/technical attributes.

Keep it simple, High tempo and direct attacking works well in lower leagues.

Try not to add too many instructions to your tactic.

Thanks for the input, currently reading through Bust the Net by rashidi1, however not much help on the lower league teams and how to build from scratch, but this will certainly help.

I have played FM using the 'bigger' teams and I have no problem managing them to success its at the lower league level I am having trouble and literally can't put a string of wins together and usually get relegated or sacked. I know for a fact it is my tactical knowledge at these levels as I have tried using teams that are predicted to win the league and still battle in relegation so I know something is not quite right tactically but I am not sure what it is.

Thanks for the input another question I have is in regards to the leagues I enable and database size, if managing lower league clubs how should you have this set, my mind tells me large database with as many leagues as possible which would give me a wider variety of players across the world to sign on free transfers for example, am I correct?
