So I'm playing as Manchester United, and I am kinda playing as Ryan Giggs.

Louis van Gaal has retired and (obviously) I've removed Ryan Giggs from the database.

The first thing I did when I started the game, was sack the following members of my Backroom Staff:

  • Albert Stuivenberg (Coach)
  • Jos van Dijk (Fitness Coach)

This means that I need the following:

  • Assistant Manager (Bringing back Mike Phelan)
  • Attack-minded Coach
  • Defensive-minded Coach
  • Tactical Coach
  • Head of Youth Development (Probably either Phil Cannon or Liam Brady)

I thought I'd take a look in my Under-21 and Under-18 squad, and then I realised I had the following:

  • Warren Joyce (Defensive-minded Under-21 Manager)
  • Paul McGuinness (Defensive-minded Under-18 Manager)
  • Tony Whelan (Attacking-minded Under-18 Coach)
  • John Cooke (Tactical-minded Under-18 Coach)

So here's the questions I'm pitching to you all.

It's my opinion that all of these people have what it takes to be, at the least, very effective in the First Team.

But they all have 19-20 in "Working With Youngsters", and personally I've always found it really hard to find replacements for youth staff.

What should I do? And what would YOU do?

(A) Would you promote your Youth Backroom Staff to the First Team?

(B) Would you leave the Youth Backroom Staff as they are, and sign new Backroom Staff from other clubs?

From what I can see;

(A) Results in higher club knowledge, great staff who speak English, staff who already get along well with the players and less wage expenditure, but I'll have to find new Managers/Coaches for the youth clubs, who won't necessarily be as good, might be from rival clubs, are hard to find and may (?) affect the quality of youth training in the future.

(B) Results in new staff with minimal club knowledge who may not speak English, who may not get along with my players and may not even be as good as my youth staff (because they have pretty good coaching attributes tbh), while most likely being paid more. However, this will save me having to replace all my youth staff, which I find difficult.

I'm very interested to hear everyone's opinions on the matter, so feel free to vote on the poll above with your opinion

Also, feel free to explain your vote in the comments below so I can better understand why you made the decision you did.

Obviously, it helps if you've tried both options before and therefore know from experience which option works better.

It's great to see lots of votes in the polls, but it doesn't tell me anything unless you back up your vote with reasoning.

If it's not clear already, I'm leaning towards promoting my Youth Staff.

So to see three votes against that, makes me think there's a reason I shouldn't.

Please comment with your reasons!

There's are a lot of good senior coaches out there, and most of them are easy to get if you are a top club like Man Utd, but to find a really good youth coach can be incredibly hard since a lot of coaches won't accept a youth role.

That was my main problem with promoting youth staff. Regrettably, former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen isn't on the game anymore, so it's becoming increasingly difficult to find a world-class replacement coach for the First Team.

If anyone has experience promoting their Youth Staff into the First Team Backroom, please let me know how you got on with it!

Youth coaches are youth coaches for a reason, they work well with youngsters, it's taking a chance promoting them to the senior squad purely because senior players have a different mindset, I'd look to get good solid experienced coaches in.

Oh they will accept a youth role, just have to pay them through the nose if you want them. Imo that's the only way I've found to get really top guys in your youth setup. If you're a big club and have the cash then whats the difference in a youth coach making 1.5 k a year and 10K? Especially as Man U makes no difference as far as I can see.

This is true, they all have 19-20 for "Working With Youngsters" and that's invaluable when forming your Youth Teams' Backroom. Good, solid, experienced coaches tend to be just as hard to find for me though, especially as I only want to hire coaches who know English. But Manchester United have promoted from their youth staff before (Rene Meulensteen is a good example) so I don't see why it can't be done again.

Sack everyone and bring Jaap Stam in as your assistant manager and defensive coach

I wasn't sure whether to take this seriously or not, but he's a pretty good Defensive Coach and I've added him to my options.

Not making him Assistant Manager though, already decided on Mike Phelan.

Bring back Roy Keane. Or better yet, go into the editor, make as many copies of Roy Keane as you have spots to fill, and add him in to all of them.

Again, I wasn't sure whether to take this seriously or not.

I'm not making him my Assistant Manager but he makes a decent Coach, again I will consider him.

I don't want to be paying excessive amounts of wages for youth staff, though.

Update

Ok so I decided to start the game with Ed Woodward in charge of the "Hire/fire backroom staff for the First Team" Responsibility.

He instantly promoted McGuinness and Whelan into the First Team as Coaches.

Doesn't mean it's necessarily 'right', but evidently not that much of a stretch of the imagination.

Sticking with that for now, and I'll be sure to post my experience with youth coaches in the First Team backroom. Thanks for all the support, anyway!
