Atlantic league - nearly there.... assistance please

Hi folks,

I've been getting closer to having a fully functioning Atlantic League which I think will provide a lot of fun for people in the community. I've been running tests and so far, so great. (In short it is/was a mooted league for "big fish in small ponds" to play in a league to rival England, Spain et al)

The setup

EAlxDaP.png

As you can see, mostly North-European nations (basically those in real life who seemed to have a big interest). WHen I've lifted the teams out of their domestic setups, I've pushed teams up the respective pyramids to compensate (so the best teams from, let's say the Scottish Championship are pushed up to the Premier League, then the best teams from League 1 are pushed up to the Championship and so on - purely based on in-game reputation).

The rest of the process

1) Took over a small nation (Faroe Islands) and created a new league structure - Atlantic 1 and Atlantic 2 (A1 and A2).

2) 3 relegation spots and 1 relegation playoff fight. Similarly 3 automatic promotions from A2 and 1 playoff.

So here's a few niggles that I'd like your thoughts and suggestions on:

1) Youth - having simulated a season or two, so far each team seems to only generate about 5-8 youth players a season. Normally you'd anticipate a good 15-20 youth players to be absorbed into the u18s, but this hasn't happened. Any ideas?

2) International status - James Forrest very quickly declared interest in playing for the Faroes. It then said he'd have to wait 5 years for citizenship which is obviously nonsensical. Any idea why this is?

3) UEFA slots - despite having listed in the rules as having a champions league slot (1 CL and 3 Europa), none of my qualifying teams were included in European comps. Any ideas?

4) Language - when signing new players and coaches, the option is to send on intensive language course for faroese. I actually removed faroese as the language of the nation and replaced with English only. Do I need to change settings elsewhere?

edit* 5) Domestic cups - teams are still being drawn into domestic cup competition which is obviously a nightmare for fixture lists

6) Registration for CL (in initial season where CL is working). Football MAnager expects homegrown players to have trained in the Faroe Islands. The only way around this is to go into holiday mode for a day until the registration deadline passes.

7) "Team XXX strolled to success but selected a team entirely of foreigners". An unappetising message caused due to having no Faroese players within each squad. Not sure if this can ever be resolved.

Improvements

If I'm going to get really serious about this, ideally there would be a better league structure. In real life the suggestion was that a team could get relegated from the Atlantic setup and end up back at their original "source" nation. So if Celtic were relegated they'd end up back in the Scottish SPL, and the champion of the SPL in this instance would replace them. Any experts think this is viable?

There are other complicated systems to consider - for example every domestic league having a single automatic promotion to the Atlantic setup. However 1 team from each represented nation would have to be relegated to compensate. I don't know if this would be logically possible for FM to handle.

As it stands I am very happy with the system, the fixtures are always very interesting against great historic clubs. You can imagine week in week out going from playing Ajax, to Anderlecht, to Porto which for the likes of Celtic or Kopenhagen is a huge improvement.

Thanks for reading and I'd welcome any comments, suggestions and if there is sufficient interest at this stage I can upload the file. Cheers.

The problem with CL and Euro League is that the clubs are not recognised as Faroer. You would need to change the continental qualification nation to Faroe. But this works only in a closed league. If clubs get promoted/relegated from their home division it will not work in the long run.

The major loophole here seems to be that even if you get everything working as planned, you would have a weaker team from, say, Portugal, qualify for CL but not Sporting CP. The entire system needs a major Revamp.

One possible way to do this would be to keep all the clubs in their own nations for qualification. Then create some overall table where teams from a certain country, including those playing in the Atlantic league, are ranked based on points accumulated, where the atlantic league teams get an additional 10 points for playing in the atlantic league and not the easier home league. In this way, you can get the entire Atlantic league to qualify for Europe, while still giving the non atlantic league clubs an opportunity.

Hope that one of the expert editors can help you create something on these lines

Cheers for the comments guys.

@Kubi - That is exactly it. I can also see the contradiction if I was ever to implement a relegation process. Therefore if I am to include European football, a closed league may be the only option.

@Sankalan - That certainly happened in my initial tests. However I anticipate that country co-efficient shall level things out. Let's say Benfica, Ajax and Porto qualified for CL and got to knock-outs etc - my Faroese co-efficients should improve. However for those in the old Portogeuse league, I'd expect the remaining teams not to go far and therefore over time the co-efficients to sort themselves out.

I remember a previous attempt at this, where the editor managed to get it to work as you are suggesting, with promotion/relegation back to their home nation. I also think someone has done something similar, albeit with only the British nations. The key is getting the "continental cup nation" and "based nation" to be the real one, but the "nation" to be the one the league is in (I think, I may have the "based nation" and "nation" mixed up). This gets the continental cup qualification working, but not the relegation (I cant remember how that worked). I think it is also possible to get the home nation cups to include the atlantic league teams.

Edit: This is the British League that works with the continental qualifications for each individual nation - http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php/449778-FM16-Rule-Britannia-British-League-System-(8-levels)?highlight=british
