How to recover condition after a short pre season break?

Trying to win the African champions league but it takes place in pre season. Give the players between 2 weeks and a month off but when they return it takes about 1 and a half months to regain 100% condition regardless of match fitness, meaning i'm trying to win the champions league with a team with 60% condition. Anyone know how to get my players fit, i've tried loads of pre season friendlies and a high level of fitness training but it doesn't seem to do anything!!

Playing matches is the only way to increase match sharpness, get a few friendlies in as soon as the players return from the break, long term the best advice is to sign players who have high natural fitness as this will reduce the drop-off during the break & they'll get up to match speed quicker.

Of course you might have to accept that players will always be lacking high levels of match sharpness for that round for the CL, much like real life.
