Emperor J
This is my first attempt at one of these challenges, so hopefully all goes well. I have a variety of leagues activated (England, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, Spain, and Sweden). This is mainly for stage 4 should I make it that far. 13th July 2003 - Mellerud, Sweden This small municipality in Västra Götaland was hardly noticable to anyone outside of the area itself. The population of 9902 paled in comparison to nearby Gothenburg and its nearly half million residents. Now one of its residents wanted to right his name in the football history books, but getting there was going to be tough. Enter Anders Lidström, a man who had been on the Melleruds IF books many years ago before suffering an ultimately career ending knee injury that forced him into a coaching role. When he finally received his coaching badges ten days ago, he was shocked to learn that he was the only individual in the village who held those qualifications. Meanwhile, Mellerud was a football club that absolutely no one wanted to manage. It was quite clear that they were playing well above their talents at this stage of the season as they sat 8th in the 12 team Västra Götaland section of the Swedish Second Division. With attendances that were less than half of any other team in the league, something had to be done. So on this date, the Mellerud board made the decision to appoint local resident Anders Lidström as their new manager. Emperor J
15th July 2003 Lidström's first training session as manager of the club was one of concern. Daniel Barac, who at 16 was just breaking into the squad went down with a torn groin muscle that effectively ruled him out for the remainder of the season. This was a harsh blow just days before their first match under Lidström. After that initial training session, Lidström already had an idea what his preferred starting XI would be. 17th July 2003 - Swedish Second Division FC Trollhättan v. Mellerud Edsborgs IP, Trollhättan The match was dominated early by the hosts as they went close on several occasions. However, it would Lidström's men taking advantage of their chances that ultimately determined the winner. Eskil Ohlsson's ball found Burim Avdijaj and the Albanian born Swedish striker had no problem scoring on his debut. Ohlsson then found the net on his own as he curled one past the helpless Trollhättan goalkeeper to make it 2-0 for the visitors with his first ever goal. Eventually FC Trollhätten found the net, as in the 57th minute Andreas Kristoffersson hit a beautiful volley that gave the home supporters hope. They never did find an equaliser and Lindström had won his first match as a manager. Emperor J
Another week passed and Mellerud were getting ready to entertain league leaders GAIS. Being stuck in midtable was just fine for Lidström as he hoped to take a point from his first home match in charge. Mellerud's stadium Râdavallen was the smallest stadium in the league holding a capacity of 750 with no seats. With the league leaders in town, it was hoped that it would reach that capacity. 24th July 2003 - Swedish Second Division Mellerud v. GAIS Râdavallen, Mellerud GAIS were completely unprepared for what was about to hit them. Lidström's men put the ball in the back of the net early and often in this encounter. Mathias Larsson got the ball rolling as he headed in from a corner to make it 1-0. On 33 minutes Mellerud struck on the counter as Eskil Ohlsson struck his second in as many matches. The match went into halftime 2-0, but the scoring was far from over. It took a half hour for Mellerud to strike again, and it was Ohlsson with his second of the match on 75 minutes. Six minutes later, and it was 4-0 to the home side through a powerful effort from Alex Mabäcker Johansson. Two minutes later, Mabäcker Johansson was taken down in the GAIS penalty area. Fredrik Grenander added the final nail in the coffin for the league leaders and made it 5-0. GAIS managed to find a late consolation after a cross took a bizarre deflection off of Henrik Olsson to finish an unexpected 5-1 victory for Mellerud. Emperor J
There was only one major event that occurred at the training ground during the week. 17-year-old utility midfielder Daniel Andersson went down with a groin strain two days before the next match and would be out for the next two weeks. 31st July 2003 - Swedish Second Division Mellerud v. Ljungskile Râdavallen, Mellerud All those in attendance at this encounter watched a match that stood out in no particular way. Emperor J
Mellerud had a week off from the league due to Qviding's unlikely run to the quarterfinal of the Swedish Cup. However, they were easily dismissed by First Division Kalmar FF 2-0. The other ten teams in the league were in action and the chase for the single promotion playoff spot that went with winning the league tightened up that much more. Mellerud Torpavallen The match was fairly one-sided, although it wasn't very obvious from the scoreline. Lidström's men continued to show deadly effectiveness from set pieces as Ecuadorian-born Swedish defender Daniel Mesa Moreno headed home from a corner in the 13th minute. The lead lasted a mere 15 minutes when Mattias Lundström launched a wonder strike from 30 yards that would not be stopped for the equaliser. Mellarud's advantage was restored just minutes later when Alex Mabäcker Johansson rounded the helpless Qviding goalkeeper and put it in the top corner of the net. Early in the second half, Qviding found a second equaliser when Lundström buried a penalty after Oskar Löfstedt was brought down from behind in the penalty area. Unfortunately for the hosts, there was another quick response from Mellerud. Eskil Ohlsson beat the offside trap and finished in easy fashion to put them back in front on 54 minutes. Mabäcker Johansson finished the scoring in the 63rd minute when he pounced on a rebound. Emperor J
For once, it was not a quiet week at the Mellerud camp. Lidström finally made the first transfers as manager, when two players left the club for playing time in the lower divisions. Ismael El-ani had not featured all season at Mellerud and went to Överås on a free transfer. Also leaving for free was Henrik Norgran to Hjulsbro. 21st August 2003 - Swedish Second Division Skärhamn v. Mellerud Röavallen, Skärhamn The goals were flying in early, with three scored in the first twelve minutes. Things settled down and Mellerud emerged with the victory thanks to some solid goalkeeping from Harry Hyvärinen. The hosts went up early Daniel Milicevic slipped the ball past Hyvärinen from a tight angle. However, Mellerud equalised when Burim Avdijaj powered on off the bottom of the crossbar to make it 1-1. On 12 minutes, Alex Mabäcker Johansson completed the quick turnaround with a wonderful chip of the goalkeeper. Five minutes before the half, Johansson intercepted a poor backpass and made no mistake curling it past substitute goalkeeper Rickard Alsterberg. The second half had much the same tone as the end of the first half. The home side came close on several occasions, but they could not cut into Mellerud's lead. They paid the price when Avdijaj beat the offside trap on a brilliant pass from Eskil Ohlsson and made it 4-1. Skärhamn managed to find a consolation goal in the 86th minute on some careless defending by the visitors. Niklas Löfgren was completely unmarked to bury a rebound after Hyvärinen fumbled a cross to make it 4-2. Emperor J
With the transfer window quickly closing at an absurdly late point in the Swedish season, bids were flying in for Mellerud players. The amount of bids was testing Lidström patience to say the least. With promotion a near impossiblility this season, he was not going to accept the free transfer offers that he was getting nearly everyday. 28th August 2003 - Swedish Second Division Mellerud v. Jonsered Rådavallen, Mellerud Lidström's Mellerud side continued to show that they may be a force to be reckoned with next season with a convincing 2-0 victory over Jonsered. Alex Mabäcker Johansson put the home side in front with a goal in the 39th minute. Burim Avdijaj made it 2-0 when he put the ball into the back of the net after a lovely through ball from Johansson. The two Mellerud strikers were quickly becoming a potent strike force, and they may be ones to watch next season. Although promotion is still a statistical possiblility, with only three matches remaining some miraculous results were needed for Mellerud to be top of the table come the end of the season. Emperor J
There were two weeks between matches in the league, but that did not solve the fact that there were two players suspended for the next league match against Floda. Henrik Olsson, a popular target before the transfer window closed, was suspended for picking up his third yellow card. Alex Mabäcker Johansson picked up a two match suspension due to being sent off on a second yellow, which was also his third. If there was any chance of promotion left, it would probably be lost on the next match day. 11th September 2003 - Swedish Second Division Mellerud v. Floda Rådavallen Another season in the Second Division now beckons for Mellerud after a wasteful draw at Rådavallen. Dominating possession and flow of play for nearly the entire match, it took them 72 minutes to finally open the scoring. Jon Bergenholtz nodded a cross into the path of Burim Avdijaj who put it into the net to make it 1-0. Oddly named substitute Leppe Leppe made sure the lead was short lived as he took advantage of a terrible decision by the linesman to score on Floda's only chance of the match. The 1-1 draw mathematically eliminates Mellerud from the league championship and the possibility of promotion regardless of the results of other matches. Emperor J
Even though Lidström's Mellerud side was playing attractive football (at least at this level), they had failed to get out of the hole that is the Swedish Second Division. They would be attempting to play the role of spoiler for the remaining two matches. In a true test of his team's mettle, Mellerud would be taking Ytterby, winners of their last ten matches. 18th September 2003 - Swedish Second Division Ytterby v. Mellerud Ytterns IP, Ytterby The 1524 fans that showed up to watch this matchup between the two form teams in the league were not disappointed. However, for the home supporters, it was ten minutes of brilliance that sent their team to their first defeat in twelve matches. The visitors controlled play early as both Johan Larsson and Burim Avdijaj came close to scoring. Ultimately, it was Ytterby who opened the scoring on 33 minutes. A well taken free kick from goal scoring talisman Eddy Lopez into the top corner gave the home side a 1-0 lead. From that point, Ytterby showed why they were at the top of the table and really should have added to their lead. Mellerud goalkeeper Harry Hyvärinen played the spoiler on several occasions. His efforts paid off when Mellerud equalised in the 61st minute. An excellent 1-2 between Jon Bergenholtz and Eskil Ohlsson tore a hole in the defence and resulted in the 5th goal of the season for Ohlsson. Eight minutes later, it was Fredrik Grenander, filling in for the suspended Alex Mabäcker Johansson, scored from a rebound, which was ultimately proved to be the winner. Emperor J
It was a cool night in Mellerud as the season was about to end. Preparations were already well underway for the close season for the two teams involved in this encounter. 25th September 2003 - Swedish Second Division Mellerud v. Torslanda Rådavallen The two sides looked as though they were already going on holiday. The linesman also had that look as well, as Alex Mabäcker Johansson took advantage of being in an offside position to score twice. Torslanda found the net in the 70th minute after a 60 yard pass from Fredrik Andersson fell to Anders Lundqvist, who scored his first ever goal for Torslanda. These two sides ended up going in opposite directions in the second half of the season. With a solid core of players, Mellerud should be near the top next season. However, they likely bring in some more talent to challenge for promotion next season. Emperor J
1st April 2004 Anders Lidström was about to learn about the harsh reality of managing at this level when he met with the board. He was told that the club was now in debt, and that the club would have to sell players for a considerable amount of money for this level. It turned out that Mellerud had already lost over £50k in the first quarter of the year. One thing that Lidström had done that was appreciated by the board was to reduce wages. Nine players had been brought in during the close season, including the division's leading scorer last term, Eddy Lopez. Eleven players had left the club, and more would surely have to leave in order to prevent administrators from having to come in. This situation ultimately meant that the Swedish Cup 1st round would start the season, and no friendlies would be played. 21 April 2004 - Swedish Cup 1st Round Mellerud v. Lund Rådavallen Lund were emphatically dismissed from the Swedish Cup at the hands of a ruthless Mellerud side. Even the 6-0 scoreline did not due the match justice. However, it was the amazing five goals tally from debutant David Lundström that had the Lund defence up in arms. The 19-year-old striker opened his account for the club with a sensational free kick from 25 yards, and quickly the one man rout was on. A headed cross from Alex Mabäcker Johansson set him up for an easy second on 34 minutes, but he was far from done this evening. He completed a hat-trick with the last kick of the first half, as he turned Lund defender Ludwig Berg and powered it home. Lundström made it four goals on 66 minutes, as he took a shot on the volley from a cross supplied by fellow debutant Fredrik Andersson. The fifth goal for Lundström was also setup by that man. Andersson outworked Berg for a ball in the air and nodded it into Lundström's path. On this night, it was never in doubt if he would finish. Substitute Ninos Thöre, also making his debut, added the final goal as he headed home directly from a corner. Mellerud 6-0 Lund Mellerud: Lundström 18, 34, 45, 66, 74; Thöre 79 Attendance: 648 For the next round of the cup, Lidström's men drew First Division Falkenberg at home. Emperor J
The wasn't that much time to reflect on the cup victory for there was the league opener the following Saturday. Mellerud would be taking on GAIS in the league opener, and the hosts would be looking to improve on their performance last season, which saw them miss out on the championship by a single point. 24th April 2004 - Swedish Second Division Mellerud v. GAIS Rådavallen The visitors from Gothenburg nearly escaped with all three points, but they eventually succumbed to Mellerud. GAIS went in front on 26 minutes after the hosts failed to take advantage of several opportunities in front of goal. Patrik Elmander took a pass from Kenneth Gustafsson and curled it in from the edge of the area. It took 27 minutes, but Mellerud finally equalised when Jon Bergenholtz found Alex Mabäcker Johansson unmarked in the middle and it was 1-1. Parity did not last long as David Lundström wrote his name on the scoresheet, as he took advantage of a terrible error by Lucazs Chmaj to make it 2-1. Mellerud put the match away in the dying stages when substitute Burim Avdijaj took advantage of a thin defence to score his first of the season. Emperor J
Midfielder Daniel Barac went down with an injury in training in the run up to the next match at newly promoted Varbergs. He was going to be out for the next three weeks with a strained knee. A series of injuries was quickly going to test the small squad that was forced upon Lidström. 29th April 2004 - Swedish Second Division Varbergs BOIS v. Mellerud Påskbergsvallen, Varberg One of the Second Division's new sides wanted to show that they belong in this league. They put together an inspired performance, but in the end they succumbed to Anders Lidström's shoestring squad. It took nearly the entire first half for Mellerud to take the lead. On 44 minutes, Alex Mabäcker Johansson took a brilliant pass from Fredrik Johansson to put the visitors in front. In the 62nd minute, Johansson scored his first for the club when he collected his own rebound to make it 2-0. He also finished the scoring sixteen minutes later when he out-jumped Andreas Andersson to put the ball in the back of the net. Emperor J
5th May 2004 - Swedish Cup 2nd Round Mellerud v. Falkenberg Rådavallen Anders Lidström surely has to be proud of his side as they pushed their way into the third round over First Division strugglers Falkenberg in fine style at Rådavallen. Any doubts over Mellerud's class were erased on 28 minutes. Jon Bergenholtz embarked on a magnificent solo run at the heart of the Falkenberg defence. The attention he gathered allowed Alex Mabäcker Johansson to tap in from a Bergenholtz pass. The hosts added a second after the break when Fredrik Andersson took advantage of repeated rebounds, and finally poked one in on 63 minutes. The reward for advancing to the third round for Mellerud: a June clash with Helsingborg at Rådavallen. Emperor J
8th May 2004 - Swedish Second Division Mellerud v. Sandared Rådavallen Anders Lidström had no problem getting his side up for this match after their surprise victory midweek in the Swedish Cup. What Mellerud taught their inexperienced opponents on this afternoon was a deadly lesson in execution. In addition, Sandared goalkeeper Andreas Svensson surely had to leave the match red-faced as his errors soured a good performance from his defenders. Mellerud put themselves in front after 10 minutes when Svensson pushed a light shot from Alex Mabäcker Johansson directly in the path of David Lundström, who made no mistake from six yards out. Ten minutes later, Svensson was caught out on a cross from Jon Bergenholtz, and Johansson had no problem putting it into the gaping net. Mellerud grabbed a third when Lundström ran onto a long ball from substitute Eddy Lopez, only to be brought down by Svensson, who picked up a yellow card for the offense. Jon Bergenholtz scored on the resultant penalty to make it 3-0. The fourth goal was symbolic of Svensson's performance in goal, as he was beaten from 35 yards on an ambitious shot from Johansson. Mellerud Ulvesborg, Tidaholm Leaders Mellerud were held by an inspired Tidaholms side at Ulvesborg. Possession and flow of play were controlled for most of the first hour by the hosts, but numerous saves from Mellerud's 19-year-old keeper Marcus Sahlman kept them in the match. Mellerud finally took the lead against the flow of play on the hour mark. An incredible solo effort by Alex Mabäcker Johansson made it 1-0 to the visitors, as he showed why he is attracting the interest of several clubs in the Swedish Allsvenskan. Emperor J
There was some good news this week as defender Õrjan Bäckstrand returned to the lineup after a groin injury suffered on the opening day. The injury list was not going to be shrinking for very long, however. 20th May 2004 - Swedish Second Division Mellerud v. Tord Rådavallen Mellerud hit the ground running in this affair, but quickly lost momentum as injuries took their toll. Alex Mabäcker Johansson once again opened the scoring for the hosts on just 43 seconds. Johansson beat the offside trap on a long pass from defender Kristoffer Lind, and rounded the keeper to make it 1-0. Mellerud quickly doubled the advantage just two minutes later. A Joel Karsson cross was headed home by Fredrik Andersson, and it looked like the rout was on. Tord quickly struck back, although not on the scoresheet. Henrik Olsson, Henrik Eriksson, and Jon Bergenholtz all left the match with knee injuries after clashes with opposition players. Emperor J
2nd June 2004 - Swedish Cup 3rd Round Mellerud v. Helsingborg Rådavallen What looked like a complete mismatch on paper turned out to be an absolute thriller. Anders Lidström displayed some tactical brilliance in this match from the onset, as he opted to play a 3-5-2 in an attempt to bog the match down in midfield. Goalmouth action was extremely limited in this encounter, and it only came down to who took their chances better. The opener went to the home side in shocking fashion as Helsingborg goalkeeper Fredrik Larsson could not hold onto a shot, and David Lundström took advantage to make it 1-0. The Mellerud defence held firm against the ensuing onslaught of the Helsingborg attack. The giant killing was completed with a goal from Alex Mabäcker Johansson. The young striker, whose exploits are quickly making him a legend at the club, intercepted a backpass from Eldin Karisic and finished with an perfect chip over the goalkeeper. Emperor J
5th June 2004 - Swedish Second Division Mellerud v. Torslanda Rådavallen A blinder by goalkeeper Henrik Bergman was not enough to stop Mellerud from extending their run at the top of the Second Division. The 21-year-old goalkeeper registered ten saves before finally conceding a goal to Alex Mabäcker Johansson in the 67th minute. He continued to impress in net against the tide of pressure against his goal. Unfortunately, Mellerud bagged a second on 88 minutes. Mellerud Röavallen, Skärhamn Mellerud were finally able to put some space between themselves and their promotion rivals with a solid 3-0 victory at Röavallen. Fredrik Andersson put the visitors in front on three minutes, when he followed up on a rebound from an Eric Ohlsson shot. Mellerud struck again through David Lundström minutes before halftime. Lundström struck a powerful shot just under the crossbar from 20 yards to make it 2-0. Mariedal Rådavallen Bottom side Mariedal were put to the sword by a ruthless Mellerud at rain-soaked Rådavallen. The 8-0 scoreline was not truly symbolic of how badly Mariedal were beaten. Emperor J
24th June 2004 - Swedish Second Division Mellerud v. Jonsered Rådavallen Mellerud destroyed another side at Rådavallen with a 6-0 victory over Jonsered. It was fairly obvious that it was going to be a good day for them on 7 minutes. Daniel Barac's ambitious shot through traffic took a bizarre deflection off of defender Athit E Andersson for the opener. Fifteen minutes later, Fredrik Andersson scored a superb goal as he blasted a shot past Magnus Andersson to make it 2-0. David Lundstrom made it 3-0 after the hour mark with a shot from 30 yards that went in off of the post. Alex Mabäcker put his name on the scoresheet with a solo run on goal. The 4-0 halftime scoreline did not mean the end of the onslaught for Jonsered. Four minutes after the break, Andersson picked up his second with an excellent header from a Barac cross. Jon Bergenholtz finished the scoring with a shot from 25 yards that really should have been stopped, but it was that kind of day for Jonsered. Emperor J
30th June 2004 - Swedish Cup 4th Round GIF Sundsvall v. Mellerud Idrottsparken, Sundsvall Mellerud's incredible run of form was finally halted by the brilliance of Fredrik Sundfors and Jonas Wallerstedt. The Allsvenskan side controlled play early as they went close on three occasions in the first half, only to be stopped by Mellerud's young goalkeeper Marcus Sahlman. With both sides defending well, it remained scoreless going into halftime. It was Wallerstedt who changed to flow of the match with an excellent goal on 58 minutes. Mellerud defender Mattias Henriksson missed a ball that was lofted in by Karl Ståhl, and Wallerstedt struck a powerful effort into the corner of the net on the volley. The tide turned against the hosts at that point as they lost control of the match. Fredrik Andersson was the first to come close on 67 minutes, but he was denied by Sundfors. Mellerud continued to press and they had their final opportunity in injury time. Substitute Eddy Lopez should have scored after getting one-on-one with the keeper, but Sundfors made what had to be the save of the season to keep him out. Emperor J
With the transfer window now open, there wasn't as much activity as Lidström thought there was going to be. There were several sides looking to acquire backup goalkeeper Harry Hyvärinen on a free transfer. Also, Gunnilse made an audacious bid of £30k for Alex Mabäcker Johansson, which quite frankly, was an absolute joke for a player with his talents. Gunnilse was going to regret underrating a player of his talents so heavily. Elsewhere, Euro 2004 was coming to a close with Holland taking on shock finalists Croatia in the final. Sweden disappointed at the tournament as they bowed out with a single point in three group matches. They were simply victims of a tough draw that had them play Italy, England and France. 3rd July 2004 - Swedish Second Division Gunnilse v. Mellerud Hjällbovallen, Gothenberg Gunnilse were the collective deer in Mellerud's headlights on a wet day in Gothenberg. The win now moves Mellerud ten points clear at the top of the table at the halfway point of the campaign. Alex Mabäcker got things started with a fine hat-trick in the first 17 minutes. Johansson scored his first on 54 seconds after splitting two defenders and firing an unstoppable shot into the bottom right corner of the goal. The second came on the quarter hour mark when he and Eddy Lopez went in on the goalkeeper alone. Johansson made a mockery of the defence with his third goal. He took a pass from Daniel Barac at the halfway line and never looked back. Lopez took control of the match on his own late in the first half and the early part of the second. His first goal came in the 41st minute, when he headed home from a corner delivered by Mattias Henriksson. His second came three minutes later when he deftly cut back against two defenders and put it past the keeper. Incredibly he scored just one minute later as he beat two defenders to a ball sent in by Joel Karlsson and beat the keeper with a shot that went in off of the post. Lopez picked up a fourth early in the second half when he beat Thomas Perstedt, who was caught out by Jon Bergenholtz. Emperor J
8th July 2004 - Swedish Second Division GAIS v. Mellerud Gamla Ullevi, Gothenberg Looking mortal for the first time in months in the league, Mellerud were held to only their second draw of the season by a determined GAIS side. Mellerud did open the scoring again with a 35 yard cracker from David Lundström that hit the post as it went in. The hosts did not collapse like a deck of cards like so many opponents Mellerud have faced this season. Patrik Elmander seized an opportunity presented to him by poor defending and equalised with his fourth goal of the season. The remainder of the match saw both sides struggle with attacking opportunities and a draw was inevitable. Emperor J
I did lose in the cup two matches ago. Strangely I have been getting Diablo-esque results playing the default 4-4-2, except for the draw at GAIS. Hopefully I can keep this run of form up through the league season and through the promotion playoff 15th July 2004 - Swedish Second Division Mellerud v. Varbergs BOIS Rådavallen Mellerud returned to their previous winning ways with an emphatic 8-0 destruction of bottom side Varbergs. Fredrik Andersson put the hosts in front with a header on 15 minutes. Alex Mabäcker Johansson made it 2-0 with a goal on 43 minutes. On the stroke of halftime, it was a three goal lead as Jonathan Lundevall headed it into his own net. Mellerud Sandevi, Borås Mellerud continued their march toward the league title with a 2-0 victory over Sandared. Mellerud lacked their recent attacking flair, but took advantage of their only two goalscoring chances of the game. The dominant figure of the match was midfielder Jon Bergenholtz. He opened the scoring on 42 minutes with an absolute bullet of a shot that was never going to be stopped. Five minutes into the second half, he sent in the cross that was met by the head of Fredrik Andersson that made it 2-0. Emperor J
29th July 2004 - Swedish Second Division Mellerud v. Tidaholms GoIF Rådavallen Mellerud moved eleven points clear at the top of the table with a fine 3-1 win over Tidaholms at Rådavallen. Alex Mabäcker Johansson got the match underway in fine fashion. His goal on the volley on just 41 seconds clearly has to be a candidate for goal of the season. That was the only goal in what was really a competitive first half. In the 64th minute, Henrik Olsson doubled the advantage for the hosts when he pounced on a rebound left by Jonas Lundgren. It became 3-0 on 73 minutes when Fredrik Andersson buried a penalty after Daniel Barac was brought down in the penalty area by Claes Espefält. The visitors pulled one back on 84 minutes when a cross hit Olsson and went into his own net. Emperor J
5th August 2004 - Swedish Second Division Tord v. Mellerud Rosenlunds IP, Jönköping In what seems to be becoming a Thursday tradition, Mellerud won once again. This time it was a surprisingly close 2-0 victory. Peter Andersson scored the opener after collecting Eskil Ohlsson's shot that rebounded off of the crossbar. The second came in the dying moments of the match when Tord goalkeeper Kim Karlsson came forward for a corner. The ball was cleared to Fredrik Andersson who shot the ball in from 60 yards. All was not well for Mellerud after the match after finding out that Alex Mabäcker Johansson would be out for several weeks with a knee injury. Tord 0-2 Mellerud Mel: P. Andersson (1) 43; F. Emperor J
With injuries mounting in the Mellerud camp, Lidström was struggling to keep a cohesive unit on the pitch. It was eventually decided that they would have to play the next match with an incomplete bench. 12th August 2004 - Swedish Second Division Mellerud v. Skärhamn Rådavallen Mellerud escaped with three points from a battling Skärhamn side, and continued their chase for a promotion playoff spot. Daniel Barac bagged the opener for the hosts with a brilliant effort from 25 yards in the third minute. Fourteen minutes later, it was 2-0. Fredrik Andersson connected on an Eddy Lopez cross to put further pressure on Skärhamn. The visitors took control of the match, but were unable to score until very late. Skärhamn were repeatedly stonewalled by goalkeeper Marcus Sahlman, he was seemingly unbeatable on this afternoon. Unfortunately, Sahlman suffered an injury in the 88th minute and backup Harry Hyvärinen made his first appearance of the season. The fact that Daniel Milicevic pulled one back in injury time was likely due to his lack of match practice. Mellerud Jonsereds IP, Gothenberg The fact that several key players were resting did not keep Mellerud from victory in a match they were trailing at halftime. The hosts went in front on 37 minutes with a goal from a corner finished by Fredrik Sundqvist. However, Mellerud equalised with a goal from Eskil Ohlsson that surely left goalkeeper Magnus Andersson red-faced. Emperor J
10th October 2004 - Swedish Second Division Promotion Playoff First Leg Mellerud v. Mjällby Rådavallen Mellerud managed to achieve victory in the first leg of their promotion playoff, but they may regret some lax defending at the end of their encounter with Mjällby. The hosts took a 2-0 lead into halftime with late goals from Alex Mabäcker Johansson and Fredrik Andersson. A dull second half followed until the final five minutes. At that time, Mjällby midfielder Daniel Nicklasson unleashed a wicked attempt on goal that was tipped over by Marcus Sahlman. With injury time looming, Johansson added his second with a close range header. It would be Nicklasson who would have the last say in the match. He was given way too much space by the Mellerud defence, and his vital away goal will loom large in the second leg of the tie. Emperor J
14th October 2004 - Swedish Second Division Promotion Playoff Second Leg Mjällby v. Mellerud Strandvallen, Mjällby Mellerud lost their first match of the season, but still managed to win promotion 4-3 on aggregate. In a match that definitely did not disappoint fans of attacking football, the goalkeepers loomed large. Both Marcus Sahlman and his opposite number Gustav Gustavsson were absolutely unbeatable in the first half. Alex Mabäcker Johansson finally opened the scoring when Gustavsson was beaten to a rebound by Fredrik Andersson, who passed to the young hitman for his 22nd of an excellent campaign. Mjällby came back on the hour mark with a diving header from Jens Hermansson. William Leandersson cut the deficit in the tie to a single goal with a well taken goal from a superb pass by Hermansson. However, Sahlman would not let any further shots go by. Now life in the Superettan beckons for the small village club. Emperor J
1st April 2005 Anders Lidström had just finished coming back from his scouting trip all around the country. It was April Fool's Day, and that meant it was time for the annual meeting with the board members. Several staff members had left the club deeming the club as well below them. Three of the four eventually found work. Klas-Göran Emanuelsson took the vacant manager post at Third Division Kristianstad. Björn Ohlsson was now the assistant at Sandared. Anders Sköld took another assistant job at Second Division Väsby. The other man who left, Patrick Axelsson decided to call it a day and retired at age 60. With the £150,000 that came with promotion to the Superettan, the club was now operating in the black. This still did not solve the major financial problem the club was having. The club was still hemorraging cash in every direction even though the wage total for the playing staff was a little over £100k per annum. The board was expecting very little from Lidström, merely hoping that the club would avoid relegation this season.
Emperor J
Over the next few weeks, Lidström decided on his first team squad of 21 players: Goalkeepers Marcus Sahlman (20 y/o, SWE, GK) - Sahlman had a decent first season with the club last season after being released by Allsvenskan side Halmstad. He was in net for all but two matches last season for the club. Harry Hyvärinen (24 y/o, SWE, GK) - Hyvärinen accepted his demotion to the bench for last season. With the knowledge that he is the definite backup for Sahlman, he extended his contract with the club for another two seasons. Defenders Mattias Henriksson (24 y/o, SWE, SW/D/F RC) - Henriksson is a pacy sweeper who doesn't make the headlines because he does his job well. Played in all but two matches last season and actually coaches the clubs Under-18 side. Bo Nordh (18 y/o, SWE, SW/D C) - Nordh was signed on a free transfer in March from Allsvenskan champions IFK Gothenberg. Has the ability to play an active role in the club already. Örjan Bäckstrand (24 y/o, SWE, D/DM RL) - Bäckstrand was acquired before last season in a player exchange from Sleipner. The committed fullback was able to shutdown nearly all attacks on the flanks last season, and can hopefully accomplish the same this year. Richard Eriksson (18 y/o, SWE, D R) - Eriksson came through the youth ranks at Mellerud last season to make nineteen appearances for the senior side last season. His appearances will probably be limited to coming off of the bench. Joel Karsson (19 y/o, SWE, D RL) - Karsson's future at Mellerud looked bleak until Lidström started him in his first match in charge. The defender has not looked back, and will play a major part in the club's season. Kristoffer Lind (21 y/o, SWE, D RC) - Lind, unlike Eriksson, started much of last season in his first season in the senior squad. With the addition of Nordh, Lind looks limited to appearances off of the bench. Magnus Börjesson (18 y/o, SWE, D L) - In Börjesson, Mellerud now has a natural left fullback in its squad for the first time. Discovered by new scout Rickard Lundh, the defender signed on a free transfer should be one for the future. Henrik Olsson (31 y/o, SWE, D/DM C) - Olsson is by far the oldest member of the first team, but his experience will come in handy for an inexperienced squad at this level. Midfielders Daniel Barac (18 y/o, SWE, DM RLC) - Barac can play all over midfield and he showed that last season with four goals. He looks limited to occasional appearances this term, however. Henrik Eriksson (23 y/o, SWE, M R) - Eriksson will be hoping to improve on his nine appearances last season. A return to health this campaign should see a healthy supply of starts. Eskil Ohlsson (24 y/o, SWE, M/F RC) - Ohlsson played a utility role nearly all of last season making fourteen appearances. Will be looking to put in some good performances as his contract runs out after the season. David Lundström (20 y/o, SWE, M C) - Coming to Mellerud as part of a player-exchange, the previously unheralded Lundström bagged an impressive haul of fifteen goals last season, including five in his debut in the Swedish Cup. His performances trailed off as the season went along, but should adapt to this level. Peter Andersson (23 y/o, SWE, AM RLC) - Andersson had a disappointing season compared to those around him. He only scored one goal last season, and may be heading to the substitute's bench very quickly. Jon Bergenholtz (19 y/o, SWE, AM/F L) - Mellerud's answer to Ryan Giggs, if only because he plays the same position. His influence has changed several matches since he was first given a chance under Lidström and will be important this season. Ninos Thöre (25 y/o, SWE, AM L) - Thöre was brought in before last season as cover for Bergenholtz, and he does that job well. Scored three goals in fourteen appearances in all competitions last season. Forwards Fredrik Andersson (27 y/o, SWE, S C) - Andersson joined before last season from Perstorp and was joint leading scorer with 22 league goals. The pacy striker is also a threat in the air where he scored many goals last season. Burim Avdijaj (24 y/o, SWE, S C) - Avdijaj had to adjust to a backup role last season, but he still scored seven goals last season. Hat-tricks in consecutive starts at the end of last season proved him to be a capable replacement. Omar Fejzulovski (19 y/o, SWE, S C) - Fejzulovski was brought in as cover at the end of August 2004. He scored one goal in two starts last season. Alex Mabäcker Johansson (19 y/o, SWE, S C) - Johansson was a mainstay on the scoresheet last season. Also scoring 22 league goals last season, he was usually good for a goal in every match. A bright future definitely awaits this yound starlet. Emperor J
20th April 2005 - Swedish First Division Assyriska v. Mellerud Bårsta IP, Södertälje Mellerud absolutely destroyed ten man Assyriska 6-0 in their First Division opener. Alex Mabäcker Johansson was unstoppable as he scored four goals in succession to put the match out of reach. The opener cam on just 13 minutes when Assyriska goalkeeper Niklas Gill let an easy pass from Fredrik Andersson get past him for Johansson to simply tap in. Fourteen minutes later he got his second when he curled it beyond Gill's outstretched arms. Things went worse for the hosts when Zoran Manovic was sent off in the 34th minute for pushing Andersson. Horrible defending was responsible for the third goal, as both Andersson and Johansson went in on goal unopposed. Johansson made it four on 67 minutes with a diving header. Substitute Omar Fejzulovski and Jon Bergenholtz added the final two goals in the last ten minutes to complete the rout. Emperor J
I thought I's try something a bit different here to take a short break from the story.[/b] Elsewhere in the European Football England Arsenal are currently holding onto a three point advantage over Chelsea in the Premiership with just five matches remaining. The Gunners have scored an impressive 85 goals this term led by Thierry Henry's 18 goals. The real story is the 45 goal partnership at Manchester United. After making a £13.75 million move from Kaiserslautern, Miroslav Klose is scoring for fun with United, amassing 21 goals so far. His total has only been surpassed by Ruud van Nistelrooy's 24 goals. France Marseille recently clinched its second consecutive league title with four matches remaining. They have had a steady goalscoring partnership of their own with Didier Drogba and César Carignano contributing 39 goals combined. Germany It looks like nothing will stop Bayern München from claiming yet another Bundesliga title. Borussia Dortmund have kept up the pace, but they are quickly running out of matches to catch up. The surprising name at the top of the goalscoring chart is Naohiro Takahara. The Japanese international's 22 goals have kept Hamburg midtable at the very least. Greece Another season, another title for Olympiakos. The Piraeus side are a full 16 points clear of their nearest challengers AEK Athens going into their final match of the season. Costa Rican international Rónald Gómez and Dimitris Salpingidis are joint top scorers with 13 goals this campaign. The latter's form has led the PAOK striker being recognized by national team coach Angelos Anastasiadis with his first two appearances for Greece. Holland With four matches remaining, PSV look likely to wrestle the league title away from holders Ajax with a defence that has put the rest of the league to shame. They have conceded thirteen less goals than any other club in the league. Showing remarkable consistency is FC Groningen, as they lie 8th at the moment. Their record in their 30 matches: 10 wins, 10 draws, 10 losses and 48 goals for and 48 goals against. Italy Juventus currently lead Serie A by four points over Inter with six matches remaining. While the title contenders are the same, it is the teams that are challenging for Europe that may raise a few eyebrows. Led by Jay Bothroyd, Perugia lie four points out of Champions League qualification with two games in hand. Sampdoria are doing well to compete at the top as well with Fabio Bazzani's 20 goals leading the way. Portugal Sporting are looking to reclaim the title that they last won three seasons ago. They are going to have to fight off Porto and Benfica for it, however. The three sides have traded the top spot in the league for most of the season and it will likely go down to the last weekend for the title. Russia The new season has just started with Spartak Moscow leading the league early over bitter rivals Lokomotiv and Torpedo Moscow. The three have already created a gap at the top with Torpedo six points clear of fourth placed Tom after six matches. Vladimir Beschastnykh has been lighting it up with six goals of his own in the early stages of the campaign. Scotland Celtic have almost wrapped up the Scottish Premier League this season as they are eleven points clear of Rangers with six matches remaining and a game in hand on their Old Firm rivals. The gap to third is a mere seven points at the moment with Kilmarnock filling that spot. Spain Deportivo are holding on to a two point lead at the top of La Liga with seven matches remaining. Betis, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, and Celta Vigo are all in realistic contention for the title. Emile Mpenza has been a key player for Real Sociedad scoring nineteen goals for the Basque side after his £5 million move from Belgian side Standard Liège in late August. UEFA Cup Europe's second biggest competition is in the semi final stage. Auxerre defeated Benfica 4-3 on aggregate in the last round to make it this far. They take on Celtic, who edged out Sampdoria on the away goals rule to edge closer to another European final. The other semifinal sees Perugia, conquerors of FC Basel in the last round, take on Schalke 04, who defeated Parma. Champions League Like the UEFA Cup, the Champions League is in its semi final stage as well. Three Italian sides make up the last four. AC Milan, Juventus, and Lazio will all be looking to bring the European Cup back to Italian soil. The only remaining spoiler is Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk. They advanced to this stage with a 3-1 aggregate win over holders Chelsea. They had no problem with the second leg of that tie as they won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Emperor J
I messed up the beginning of that post badly. If a mod could fix my lazy tag job, please 1st May 2005 - Swedish First Division Mellerud v. Trelleborg Rådavallen Levin Blinder Björn Levin was nearly unbeatable as Trelleborg escaped with a point from Rådavallen. The visitors went in front with their only real opportunity of the match on 22 minutes. Jonas Nilsson got on the other end of a cross, and his header took a deflection off of Henrik Eriksson and into the back of the Mellerud goal. Mellerud came back on their first opportunity on net on 35 minutes. Alex Mabäcker Johansson was brought down in the penalty area by a vicious sliding tackle from [/b]Daniel Ung[/b]. Fredrik Andersson buried what was remarkably Mellerud's fifth consecutive goal from the penalty spot. From that moment on, Mellerud did not relent in their assault of the Trelleborg net. The only thing that stopped them was Levin, who stopped ten shots in the pouring rain to leave the hosts with a frustrating 1-1 draw. Mellerud Vallentuna IP, Vallentuna Mellerud traveled east to Vallentuna to take on the current leaders of the Second Division Östergötland section. They managed to come out of it 3-0 victors, but the injuries sustained will be felt for some time. However, it was a bright start for Anders Lidström's side as Alex Mabäcker Johansson opened the scoring on 15 seconds with a well placed header. Ten minutes later, things soured for Mellerud as Jon Bergenholtz limped off with a calf injury. On the quarter hour mark, David Lundström made it 2-0 with a header from Peter Andersson's free kick. Then, on the half hour mark, Bergenholtz's replacement, Ninos Thöre exited with a shoulder injury. Vallentuna continued to play a physical game to make up for their lack of talent, but never really posed a threat. Johansson scored again on 65 minutes when he worked a brilliant 1-2 with Fredrik Andersson and went in alone on the goalkeeper.
