Long Passing Defenders

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

Quick one...

OK, so Ball Playing Defenders are there to play shorter ground passes out of defence...

Limited Defenders are there to clear balls long.

SO what would you guys to to get a defender to dwell on the ball, bring it out, and then actually hit a long "Pirlo-esque" diagonal pass instead of a clearance? (assuming you had a defender who could pass well).

That's a Ball Playing Defender. They're given more licence to try those type of balls.

So a BPD with dribble more and more direct passing?

A BPD doesn't need any additional instructions to attempt Pirlo-type balls. His passing range is mixed with a decent amount of creative freedom, IIRC, so nothing prevents him from doing so already.

Depending on Team Instructions. If your team is set to Short Passing/Retain Possession etc. then the BPD should be given more direct instruction individually.

"Mixed" just means default, and is relative to the rest of the team (if the graphic underneath is anything to go by).

Central Defenders won't consistently bring the ball out libero-style. Hopefully, we'll see more of that from BPDs in FM17 though.

If you want creative passing, choose a BPD. Standard Central Defenders are the more basic, possession-oriented role that will just look to get the ball to the fullback or holding midfielder. The BPD is intended to play riskier passes to attacking players.

Cheers.

I usually play a short style, and the results are usually tame balls to the DM or WB area. I had a play with Team passing etc, set the team to Long Passing and then adjusted a few Players in the attacking zones to pass shorter (not ideal) but it did mean that the BPD's (set as the outer players in a back 3) were regularly sending the long diagonals that id hoped for.. worked quite nicely with an Attacking team mentality.
