possession football alludes me, had to go contain?

i just played a match nd watched part of it in full and the other team where passing it about in a controlled manner passing it back when in dead etc, while my team would'nt do the same only when i went on contain did it look anything similar, i had it on short passing, retain possesion, work it into the box (nd not), low temp, can anyone explain?

plus i was the way better team.

the only reason i could think is it is a pre season nd the team hasn't got used to each other yet nd has low tactical familarity, if this is not the reason then i'm stumped.

any help apreciated.
