wage budget question

Recommended Posts

the year is 2020 and i just was hired at Man U. They currently have a wage budget of 436 million but are only using around 320 million of that. They have a few older guys who are very close talent wise to some younger guys and i am thinking of offloading them. My question is this. lets say my wages drop to 200 million this season. The following season will i have a wage budget that is much lower or is your wage budget for the season due to your financials only?

Taking into account the league rules regarding wage spend restrictions that's an interesting question, financially there is no reason for the club to reduce your budget & they should allow you to spend whatever they feel the club can afford however current Premier League wage control rules will cap your allowed budget to £12m above your annual wage spend for the previous season (increased income other than TV revenue increases the cap at a 1:1 ratio) & any excess spend results in a financial penalty which iirc is a 1:1 ratio so for every Pound over the cap your clubs is fined a Pound.

In your scenario if you reduce the wage spend to £200m the most you can spend is £212m, if the board keep the same budget as before they're exposed to a potential fine of £224m, that's still in line with your previous budget but no club likes to stump up a £224m fine as that's a single hit so I would expect your board to reduce your budget to below £300m to limit any potential fine & I'd expect RL Man Utd would actually slash the budget to £212m.

Would be interesting to find out what happens as I've not managed a big Premier League side for so long that I can't even remember what FM it was on

Edit: That image is the lowest position they hit during the season, at some point they were bottom but managed to climb out of the relegation places. It is poorly labelled.
