I am new to football manager, what guide should I read?

Recommended Posts

So I am new to football manager and I became so addicted. But, I don't know how to create my own tactic, because I always struggle. I played with downloaded tactics, but now I want to make my own tactics. So from where I should start? Sorry for bad English.

Complete Guide:

Lines-and-Diamonds-The-Tactician-s-Handbook-for-Football-Manager-2015 - Good all round guide for FM, a few minor changes regarding team shape but still detailed and accurate.

Generic Style Guides:

Remember they are generic and not meant to be just copied. There are no "broken" tactics, you need to build a logical tactic and get the correct players for it.

The Art of Possession Football

Formation Topics:

Developing my 442 - A good demonstration of analysis to improve your tactic to give what you want rather than trying to force things to fit your expectation.

Why Not 4231 - Generic advice and input on a popular formation.

My quick tips to a new player:

1. Keep things simple. Rather than ticking "Play Shorter" automatically, watch the game and decide if you actually want them to play shorter than they currently do.

2. Don't make massive changes in one go, gradually tweak and try to spot the effect of the change.

3. Your formation is your defensive positioning, the Role + Duty will dictate how the players move from this formation. TV formations are typically depend on how defensive/attacking a team is, a 4141 can easily be a 433 DM Wide depending if the wide midfielders are attacking lots so more advanced than there defensive position.

4. Recognize the players you have and what they are good/weak at. If your determined to play a formation/style do these players fit that vision? Will you have to play differently until you can bring in the right players? This is a common mistake and something you see in real life with "3 year plan" comments.

5. If your having problems then come and ask, post your full tactic, what you are expecting the team to play like and what issues your having. Try to be more specific than "we're losing" or "we aren't scoring". How are you conceding? How do you typically lose possession?
