gunnerfan
This just in from the "It Pays to Pay Attention" Department. I'm playing in the FA Cup Final as Coventry vs. Hull. Hull plays a 4-4-1-1 with just one player on attacking duty - an AP in the central midfield. I adjust my OIs to contain him before the match begins. At 1:06, with Hull having come out much more aggressively than I had expected, I pause the match and click on "Tactics-Opposition". The AP is suddenly on support duty and the right mid is the lone attacker. I utter an epithet and adjust my OIs. When I go back to the match, the Hull formation widget shows the RM more slightly advanced and the AP a tad further back than before. We get some decent play going but the Hull regains possession and comes back even harder. I look at the Hull formation widget again. The RM is back to his original position but the RB is advanced and the AMC is practically on top of the S (F9). Again, I pause and go to my OIs. Sure enough, both the right back and the AMC are attackers (suggesting that Hull has also switched from defensive or counter to a balanced mentality). I knew the AI could change up its tactics, but I was surprised to see it doing so this early in the match. Edit: Coventry won, 3-1. I had been tightly marking the lone attacking player, but when the AI went to two, I removed the tight marking and simply closed down and shifted to weaker foot for both. The AI stopped switching up. I'm in the offseason with my save, now, but when my pre-season matches begin, I think I may play with this a bit to test it.
