So in my Marseille save I'm just starting Season 5. These are my league positions for the previous 4 seasons.

Season 1 - 3rd

Season 2 - 2nd

Season 3 - 2nd

Season 4 - 2nd

Yet, there hasn't been a single Marseille player in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year in any of the past 4 campaigns. I can understand not having the entire team but you'd think that at least one of my players would have made it in.

What's more annoying, Maxime Lopez broke a Ligue 1 record for the highest average match rating over the season, and not even he can get a mention.

What does a guy have to do to get in this team!

Team of the years tend to be 4-4-2, which makes breaking into it with a snazzy formation all the more difficult. Imagine you played 3 x CB, 2 x WB, 3 x CM, 1 x AM and 1 x ST. How would you fit those players into TOTY, the game might not be able to shoehorn a lot of your players into that system even if they all averaged a 9.00. So that's one reason.

Secondly is that 30 players are competing for that position in TOTY, and some of them will have high reputations with reasonably high average ratings in the side winning the title. I would wager that the player's reputation might weigh down on this (as might the club's rep). If Kante had played as well as he had but Leicester had finished 16th this year, he likely would not have made any teams of the year - there's actually a huge tradition of DMCs having incredible breakthrough seasons at smaller clubs in the PL (Tiote, Diame) but title winning players break often will take their place in a team of the year. Which is fair, they did win something, no one really cares if you make 4.7 interceptions a game for a side that finishes 12th.

The third is it's just a bit of fun. I won the League last week in my 30th season and won every game breaking a goals scored record from a time when the division had 6 more matches. I think we got 5 players in team of the year (playing a classic Mike Bassett 4-4-*******-2), we managed 11 in one of our first title wins. Fans get mad when certain players don't make it into the IRL team of the year (I've always laughed when a CB makes it in and his partner doesn't when they've contributed exactly the same), why should FM be any different in having oversights?
