When to use 'stick to 1. position/be more disciplined, or 2. 'be more expressive/roam more'.

Recommended Posts

I've read somewhere in the last twelve months that a structured/v. structured would benefit from using #2, as the team are too rigid and that a v.fluid/fluid would benefit from using #1 as the team would benefit from that method of play.

However, in FM team & tactics guide I find that the opposite is being suggested. That is fluid/v.fluid equals #2 and structured equals #1. My understanding is thus. When playing a structured game the team is already a bit restricted so using more roaming/more expressive might free them up a bit.

When playing a fluid game the team already has some freedom and by using the disciplined/ stick to position this might stop the team from running all over the pitch like headless chickens. Which is correct please?

The higher the fluidity, the more creative freedom your players are given. As I understand it, "be more disciplined" lowers this freedom a certain degree.

Roaming is a bit different and allows players to move more freely when in possession (possibly useful when trying to break through a team sitting deep) but sacrifices defensive shape (when you lose the ball, players may be out of position).

Hope this helps.

Be more disciplined and be more expressive curb creative freedom, roam from position has nothing to do with CF. So if you are playing a fluid system but want to ensure everyone plays on the same mindset but with still pay attention to your instructions then go more disciplined, if you are playing a structured system and want them to exercise more creative freedom then ask them to be more expressive, though I doubt this is really needed. Its better to roam from position in a structured system because there is more vertical space caused by the mentality splits. The same will not apply to fluid systems because the vertical spaces are not nearly as clearly defined as they are on structured. Tbh I hardly ever tell my own players to roam on structured, cos there really shouldn't be a need to, the space is enough

rashidi1, tyler16. Many thanks.

If i want to play like Claudio, i.e maximum of 25 yards between his defenders and forwards but i do not want my players do silly things and follow my instruction.

In that case, i should use Very Fluid and Be more disciplined ,right?
