Player Reports - When to keep & when to sell indicators

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just starting out a fresh new game. This time I am spending more time on each players reports to see if i should hold them or sell them before the season starts. I've found a number of entries in the "Cons" section of player reports that intrigue me on weather I should sell them or keep them regardless of the negative cons. The most negative cons i'm looking at and not sure about are:

1. Player lacks intelligence

2. Player is susceptible to injuries

3. Player is slow of the mark

4. Player doesn't enjoy big matches

5. we have a determined gorup of players and (player) is having to adapt to fit in

Which of the above cons do you think are triggers for selling a player, once again many thanks. Would love to hear your feedback.

Hi,

I am no expert even though I have played the game for a long time and these are just my personal opinions but:

1. If it is a young player, I believe this can improve and I will keep the player around/buy him anyway.

2. This is a no-go for me. If he is prone to picking up injuries it means he will not play and be unfit. I see no need in having a player on my wage bill that is not playing for me.

3. This depends on the position and the role/job I expect the player to fulfill.

4. I intend to play big matches (who doesn't) so obviously I don't want players in my starting 11 that will go hide behind the corner flag as soon as the ref blows the whistle to start the game. I would look to sell.

5. Not sure on this one. A player can still have a good personality even if it doesnt match with the squad personality (I believe). For this one I would look at it case to case.

Again, these are just my personal opinions and I don't know if im right or wrong, but it is how I play the game.

All IMO from playing experience:

1. Player lacks intelligence

Depends on position & role, is never an automatic sell for me (But probably wouldn't buy someone with it either) and would depend on the rest of his pros & cons. Probably more of a con and would end up selling at some stage in a creative/attacking role. Can't say I've noticed it much on the likes of DCs/DMs etc.

2. Player is susceptible to injuries.

I never worry about it unless its listed as a major con and even then I would usually check injury history as well if I was buying. If a youth player or someone already on the team I would give them a go and see how often it actually happens before making a decision. Having 3/4 injury prone players in a squad isn't usually a problem, having 20+ injury prone players can be.

3. Player is slow of the mark

Depends on position. Slow players are fine in roles where its more passing than dribbling so MC, supporting ST etc. More of an issue out wide where players rely on pace. An odd one in defence can be managed if you have other faster defenders and tactics that cover his weakness.

4. Player doesn't enjoy big matches.

Not a sell on that alone, I consider the rest of his abilities as well. Having a few players who don't like big matches is fine but you don't want a squad full of them.

5. we have a determined gorup of players and (player) is having to adapt to fit in

Personally I think you can have better squad personalities but determined is also far from the worst. Its just an indicator that the player has lowish determination compared to the rest of your squad, not an issue on its own as you could improve his determination but its a question of looking at the bigger picture.

Sweet many thanks for the feedback guys it really helped. I'll scope it out with my team and see how it works out. I'm kinda iffy on no.5 cause not sure how much this affects team dressing room. Anyways many thanks.

The age of the player may also affect your decision. If they're young enough, all bar one of those issues can be Tutored or Trained away.

Injury Proneness would be the only concerning issue in a young player, but Cougar has covered that - I would however mention that injury prone young players also may not develop very well. If they're injured, they can't train or play matches both of which is needed for proper development.

1. Player lacks intelligence

This simply means he has low vision, decisions or similar attribute compared to the rest of his attributes. I ignore this as I look at all of a players attributes to get a complete picture of the player but this can be something to look out for when going over the players attributes.

2. Player is susceptible to injuries

This guy probably won't be available for the entire season. If I can get enough money to get a similar replacement that isn't injury prone I'll probably sell.

3. Player is slow of the mark

Again just a comment on his attributes (I think anticipation, acceleration or agility in this case), just something to look out for when going over the players attributes.

4. Player doesn't enjoy big matches

A comment on one of his hidden attributes (important matches). Good information to have but not an immediate sell for me. It's a con but for me it's not a big con, especially if he is still young as it might change (not sure it can).

5. we have a determined gorup of players and (player) is having to adapt to fit in

This means you have a determined squad personality and this guy doesn't have high determination so he doesn't fit in. If i'm still going to tutor him this is not a concern at all. If I don't than it's a con but not an immediate sell (I don't sell Ozil when manageing Arsenal after all).

Which of the above cons do you think are triggers for selling a player, once again many thanks. Would love to hear your feedback.

I don't have any immediate triggers and always go over the role I want him to fulfill, his current attributes, any indications I have about his hidden attributes (personality, important matches, consistency, injury proness, etc.), age, potential, history at the club, possible alternatives and likely sale price before deciding whether he leaves or not.
