Moussa sissoko role vs portugal Euro 2016 final.

Recommended Posts

Was reading Michael Cox's analysis of the Euro 2016 final between Portugal and France and noted that he mentioned a bit about Moussa Sissoko's role against Portugal which i thought was really interesting. From the description, it would appear that he was playing as a wide player in a very narrow position with orders to dribble at the defence. Really liked how he performed against Portugal. Perhaps because of his natural inclination as a central midfielder that allows him to come in narrower than usual to perform in such a way. I was wondering whether future versions of FM could have something like a player's preferred role having an impact on the role you choose for him in the way he moves or behaves outside of PPMs. I think a WM(a) with sit narrower and dribble more would be a good approximation in FM16. How would you create his role on FM?

I'd also go with WM(s). I think he was mainly chosen for more defensive solidity in their 4-4-2-0 defensive system similar to how Atletico have set up in some big games. To get the two banks of four solid you need wingers who track back really well and tuck in to support the center midfielders. Sissoko obviously suits this and the tackle Payet made on Ronaldo is a pretty good indicator that he got the same instruction. Meanwhile Sissoko is the more defensive option with his physical ability and good tackling to balance out Payet who is more forward inclined. When they had the ball they didn't really look for Sissoko, they looked for Payet and Griezmann to create. Sissoko was much more a secondary option and his dribbling sometimes looked more like a spur of the moment thing or lack of other options instead of a pre planned tool to open up the defense but that might be me underestimating Sissoko and Blanc. The WM(s) with a play narrower instruction suits his role as a balance to the more adventurous Payet and the dribble more instruction reflects what he tended to do during the game.
