Switching from slider tactics to the "new" creator

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I realise this is several years out-of-date, but I have never been able to make the adjustment away from the slider-based tactical editors, and it's got me completely frustrated about FM17.

I've played FM14 for years, and I guess I just wrote off the editor as not being very useful, so I just downloaded a tactic, tweaked one or two things, and let it rip.

But, I miss the days of FM12 and before, when I had the sliders, and I could make tactical adjustments on the fly, or between matches, and I could actually get players to respond the way I want them to.

So, I'd like to learn how to use the tactic editors, and I just don't know where to begin.  I've read Cleon's tactics guides, I've even tried copying his tactics, and I just don't know where to begin.

I want my team to pass the ball to the flanks, get it to my wing midfielders who will look for overlaps, hit the wingbacks wide, who can cross the ball in, but they just. won't. do. it.  I have the width set to max, I have "look for overlap" set, I have my wingbacks set to stay wide and dribble more.  Most of the time they get the ball, they just bang it into the center midfielders who stand around until the ball gets taken off them.

I'm just completely frustrated, and ready to give up, but I don't understand why I can't get the players to actually do what they're asked.

We're in a similar boat then, because we don't know what you asked (except for 2 TIs) or what the players are doing instead so it's not possible to explain what's happening.

Start by providing the information asked for here: https://community.sigames.com/topic/264734-asking-for-help-please-read-this/

A questions though - why did you set the width to wide? That stretches the entire team, including the wide midfielders, so you may be reducing space for not only for them, but also for the fullbacks trying to overlap.

TIs like Work Ball Into Box reduces crossing (and long shots) which is why the entire setup is asked for. There could be many explanations.

Thank you. Having had a chance to step away from the game and sleep on it, I think a lot of the problem is my players. We punched above our weight to get promoted, and even my own board thinks we are going down. So, most of the time, my tactics shouldn't work.

I'm going to start a game with a stronger team to work out the tactical creator. Thanks for your time.

Just with respect to your specific desire: i.e. to see your fullbacks bombing up the pitch, overlapping your wide midfielders

This is exactly the play I want to see on my left flank of my 4-4-2. My DL is set as a WB(A), and my ML is set as a WM(S) with the PI Cut inside with ball. My Mentality is Defensive, which reduces the width of my team (giving more space on the wings). That's it... no 'Look for Overlap', no width adjustments. When my ML gets the ball, he slows up play (being on a Support duty) and cuts inside, leaving loads of space for my DL to charge forward, which he does with abandon. :)

My main DL has the PPMs 'Runs with ball down left' and 'gets forward whenever possible' which reinforces his desire to charge up the pitch. Do your wingbacks/wide midfielders have any PPMs which contradict what you want them to do?

They don't have bad PPM's, but I'm playing in the Vanarama National with a squad made up about half-and-half with guys who were with me in the Vanarama South last year and new signings.  Their stats for vision, decisions, positioning, teamwork and work rate are just poor because of the level I'm at.  It could be that my players aren't good enough to execute what I want, and it could be that things will get better as tactical familiarity improves.  I'm going to try a save with Arsenal, which definitely has the players to execute my vision, and I'm going to work out the kinks in the tactical editor there, and then see what I need to do to get my Lower League guys out of the relegation zone.

One of the other things to take into account is your team shape. Playing with greater creative freedom (Fluid or Very Fluid) may allow your players too much leeway to improvise, which with poor attributes will result in poor decision-making. You haven't mentioned which shape you are using in your current tactics, maybe changing to 'Structured' will help?

Yes, changing to Structured did help a lot.  The first thing I noticed was that the team was getting wildly out-of-shape in unproductive ways, and recovering poorly.  My back three are still getting caught out a bit, and I might try setting them a bit deeper because they're letting the opposition behind them too easily.
