How do coaching stats work in FM17?

Sorry, I don't buy every year, so sometimes thing change a bunch on me. 

 

When I go to my coaching staff screen, I see for each area of coaching a bar that stacks the coaching ability of each coach in that area on top of each other.  So, for example, if I have an attacking of 5, as do my assman, and my coach, I see a bar of height 15.  That suggests that the three of us are as effective as a single coach with attacking 15.  Is that correct?  Seems weird.  I'm used to the version in FM14, which really only cared about the single coach with the highest star rating assigned to coach each area.

 

Also, I started as a Sunday League player, so several of my stats are weak.  I assume that over time those stats will increase.  Do I select how those increases work, like I did when I set up my profile, or is it automatic?

I think you are looking at two different screens.

The training > coaches screen seem to only use the highest rated coach in the category which I think is kinda right.  Its basically showing the quality of the coaching and in effect saying that the highest rated coach would lead the session.

The staff screen with the bars shows the quality compared to other teams in the division.  I haven't looked at it that closely to know how it fully works but simply use it as a general guide as to the areas I could improve.  If you say it simply adds them together then maybe it does although I would perhaps expect some sort of averaging to occur.

There are a 2/3 attributes that don't change but all the coaching ones do over time.  I suspect you'll find that the attributes that increase the most will be the ones you are coaching.
