San Marino National Team - 2030 Update

We finally had a breakthrough year for the National side which saw us end a 34 game run of no wins and a number of great results.

Results

3 wins and a solid draw against Slovakia mean this way the best year so far for the National side. Even in defeats we didn't embarrass ourselves with credible losses to Estonia. I scheduled a few easy friendlies for us such as the US Virgin Islands to get a few wins under our belt. Canti banged in four against them and added 5 more goals to the goalscoring record this year.

Ranking

58e2776de99f4_2030NationalTeamRanking.PNG.c6022cf77f6cc6cc65a0897ca0b5bcb7.PNG

Our good year saw us move from 189th to 171st, a nice move.

The Traitors

This section is for any updates on players with both Sammarinese and Italian nationalites that are holding out from the San Marino National Team in the hopes of playing for Italy. I'm sad to report there hasn't been any changes yet with multiple players still rejecting us for Italy.

Matteo Conti is a Serie A level starting RB/RWB at the age of 19 but continues to chase his dream of playing for Italy. He's been picking up caps for them at U20 level and because he's so good it will probably be a while before he fully gives up on it which is massively annoying. I want to give him more first team football to further his development but if he becomes so good and gets a single cap for Italy it's game over for the best Sammarinese outfielder around at the minute. I remember @kandersson used to freeze these guys out in the reserves and it's something I might have to do until he's willing to accept the call from San Marino. A dilemma.

Andrea Arzilli is a high potential central midfielder who's only just turned 18. We really need good CM's but this guy refuses any call-up I offer him and has done for years sadly. He has interest from Arsenal which shows the potential he has but I'm reluctant to give him game time while he's holding out for Italy. He's 18 and has never had a call-up for Italy U19's atm so I'm hoping eventually he gives up and comes to San Marino because I would give him so much gametime at the club. Come home Arzilli.

The other guys who came through in last years youth intake are also still holding out but they're still 16 so not a massive issue at the moment.

Records

Andrea Canti reached 100 caps this year. He has an exceptional return rate in goals considering the team he plays for with 1 goal every 4 games roughly and is without doubt a legend in this country. He holds the goalscoring record and will do for some time in my opinion, especially if he can add to it.

I remember a save where someone managed the San Marino club and national team and he would ask his Italian (even those without San Marino nationality) players to retire from the national team out of spite. Funny enough they all did, so you would have 22 year old players retire.

It was an older version of FM where players would listen to the coach almost all the time.

Lol it was probably @kandersson, is that still an option on this one?

that was indeed something I used to do and would still do if given the chance! Unfortunately nowadays I only have the power to make any player fire their agent, which isn't necessarily that great as they'll hire the same 4-5 agents in circle and they all end up hating me. But that's another story.

The traitors conundrum: you want to find a balance between fatally harming their development, and giving them playing time and exposure so Italy might call them up for senior squad. The good news is that in most cases you control their destiny and will eventually get them to play for SM (I can proudly say that not a single player has worn the evil italy shirt at senior level under my tenure). The bad news is, if things haven't changed, as a rule players who have appeared at international youth level for Italy will wait until they turn 24 to accept SM (should be 22 if they have never been selected by Italy U19/U21). I only had to win European championship to undo this 'rule'...

During this 18-24 limbo I'd usually send these players on loan to club with good facilities in lower reputation countries. I think I had feeder clubs in Israel, Austria, Czech Repubilc. I think it gives them a decent chance to keep developing while also staying under the evil Azzurri radar.

You're now a quite reputable club in Italy also producing above average prospects. Italy youth teams are going to call them up sooner rather than later. You should withdraw them anytime you can hoping they stay away from big tournaments so you can cap tie them earlier at 22. Also, you might want to sign and develop a few fully italian youngsters so hopefully Italy will call them up instead of SM players...

Fun (?) fact: in FM17 for the first time in my SM career I had non-italian and non-sammarinese regens in my youth intake. I selected a feeder club from Romania (with the specific option of 'recruit foreign youngters') and immediately got three players from there. They had no second nationality though, and all were 18 so can't see this as a benefit for the challenge.

Keep up the titanic work!

Season 2030/31 - Serie A

Youth Intake

58ebd4210f4c8_2030-31YouthIntake.thumb.PNG.c8c50df965d4948917add906faa42842.PNG

Sorry for the weird view I took too long to screenshot this and they've deleted the youth candidates squad. Nobody good anyway from San Marino. Worst intake since we hit Serie A.

58ebd453dee20_2030-31Chiaruzzi.thumb.PNG.3e82fe9111754c377f20208704aec09b.PNG

Best player from this year, looks decent but nothing special, a winger though so I'll have to look into moving him somewhere he will be able to contribute.

Season 2030/31 - Serie A

Season In Review - Best Season Yet

Serie A

58ecbc3326a75_2030-31SerieATable.thumb.PNG.689baeeae072e5a18672533dd673cf9c.PNG

Our best finish ever, 2nd in Serie A. We had a long and arduous fight with Roma and Inter for the 2nd and 3rd positions which qualify for the CL and the 4th position which goes to Europa. We secured Champions League with 1 game to spare as results went our way. Our first time in the Champions League which I'm really excited about. Juventus won the league with a ridiculous 100 points and 0 losses. They were unbelievable this year and it could be a while before we're ready to challenge them.

Italian Cup

58ecbcc217269_2030-31ItalianCupResults.thumb.PNG.5c8f26ddd974cf5767658a0023a0540b.PNG

Same old same old in this stupid competition. Knocked out early yet again. I just can't ever seem to do well in this tournament and it's getting annoying.

Europa League

58ecbcea6b7f0_2030-31EuropaLeagueResults.thumb.PNG.fea83c24ecc749cb6f70b9578394f163.PNG

Europa League went a little bit better than last year as we made it out of an admittedly weaker group. The knockouts were annoying as we won 1-0 away to Villarreal and then got battered in our own backyard 3-0. I should have altered the tactics to defend our lead better but I went Wenger and ran with the same tactics that worked in the first leg :/.

Transfers

58ecbd615a2f3_2030-31TransferHistory.thumb.PNG.d3b7f0c17b058deb414ef247aeb01cc3.PNG

Once again we spent less than we received and used the money to improve the wage budget.

Notable Departures - Gianluca Di Mitri the main striker of the last two years was moved on. A good debut season followed up by a mediocre second meant I was open to signing a different striker if the right one came up and when I saw Marcel I knew it was time for Di Mitri to go.

Hassan Nwakaeme was also sold for a pretty good fee but this still annoyed me. He was our best center half and the board sold him without my consent even though we are more than good for money at the moment.

Notable Signings - Marcel was the replacement for Di Mitri. A Brazilian wonderkid it was a no brainer to get him in and he proved that decision to be correct as he finished the season with 21 league goals and 8 assists. He will only get better from here.

Mikael Diarrassouba came in on a free and slotted into the CAM role and had a stellar season with 6 goals, 13 assists and avg rating of 7.29.

Best XI

58ecbff185162_2030-31TOTY.thumb.PNG.cc20cb5da2fb48b33f53e22e6548c591.PNG

Tim Fritzsche once again walked to the player of the season, the fans just love the guy. 71% of the votes is pretty crazy although an avg rating of 7.30 he probably deserved it.

Marco Zavoli was once again the only Sammarinese player to make the XI and will be for a while, he conceded less goals than the year before and finished with a 7.05 avg rating.

Marcel was the main goalgetter and will be for years.

Youth Intake

58ecc16d4d585_2030-31YouthIntake.thumb.PNG.f4a0e91ef3e96ca6a7239f275a87da06.PNG

Worst youth intake since we got to Serie A.

58ecc18935d9c_2030-31Chiaruzzi.thumb.PNG.3e4a7abba22d20de449d28d3a9f7c479.PNG

Best player from San Marino, winger though and I don't have massive hopes for him to be honest. A youth intake to forget.

Like you (in games against Villareal) I always have this dilemma to play with the tactic who bring me good result in first game or I should use more defensive tactic and I think the first choice is better in most times..Do you have any real Player still in national team??Steffaneli or Tomassini for example??

Nah it's all regens now in the national team.

Yeah it's a real dilemma, when I've actually tried to go more defensive I've still been beaten so I don't know what to do :/

San Marino National Team - 2031 Update

The year of the goals for us as we scored in nearly every single game we played and shot up the world rankings with one huge result.

Results

58f528ba9d6ca_2031NationalTeamResults.thumb.PNG.2277eb20d7deaabb199762af4f477806.PNG

Two important things to note here in my opinion. The first is the amount of goals we scored, the only game we didn't score a goal in was one of our best results a draw vs Hungary, besides that we scored against everyone including Belgium and Russia. This shows the progress being made that I feel confident enough to roll with a more attacking style than I used to use and as a result we're bagging goals.

And the second is the fantastic result against Kosovo. Kosovo were ranked in the 70's when they came to play us and we sent them packing with a 1-0 win. We took the lead early and I parked the bus with tremendous success, we never looked like conceding and even when we did Zavoli saved anything that came his way. This result alone propelled us about 60 places up the world rankings to our highest ever point.

Ranking

58f528b9af809_2031NationalTeamRanking.PNG.7d395eef687b2621e07f8e9187b5ba32.PNG

Highest we've been under my tenure and getting close to the San Marino record of 118th set in 1998, although I feel this is a bit of a false position based off of just one result vs Kosovo. Either way it's nice to be closer to 100 than 200 :)

Records

58f528b8e16b0_2031NationalTeamCapRecord.PNG.5b036436845e9970725bb7765880e7b1.PNG

Satisfying to have a player who came through our academy hold the caps record for the country. At 31 he still has a few years left yet too, awesome player and I love him a lot.

Season 2031/32 - Serie A

Youth Intake

58fe2d9086e5c_YouthCandidate.thumb.PNG.2ccd93ca2b2a47594849e970112d4c19.PNG

Another terrible youth intake for us with very limited good players and the best is Italian, meh.

58fe2d8eeb39d_MariottiCB.thumb.PNG.008bddda3a6e4758a319a6dbf86b56a7.PNG

Mariotti will be ok but he's not gonna set the world alight, very bang average and terrible determination.

58fe2e058bf57_ValliST.thumb.PNG.759c5a4acd11a56fa536dbc0e5d86aef.PNG

Valli looks a good player but he's dual nationality which means a long battle to get him playing for San Marino. Will be class when I finally get him over though.

Season 2031/32 - Serie A

Season In Review - More Improvement and Silverware

Serie A

58fe9ad6a650d_SerieA.thumb.PNG.11ec39e565e1a47c6edbade16f389ea1.PNG

Juve too good again and I expect this to be the case for a few more years until Allegri retires, they've just got a much better team. At least they lost some games this year.

Champions League / Europa League

CL.thumb.PNG.c66272e600a5b80a76ee23b8cf2f5c97.PNG

Europa.thumb.PNG.436d6dcc9c5aaa4ec65945ff4fc0c829.PNG

Went out in the Group Stages of the Champions League finishing 3rd, realised in the screenie I've messed up the order of the fixtures but I need to not lose away to City in the last game but lost 2-0. Went into the Europa, beat Ajax and amazingly Arsenal on away goals which I was chuffed with and thought we'd go all the way only to be smashed by injuries and bottle it to Sassuolo who we usually smash in the league. Shame.

Italian Cup

58fe9ad4677e4_ItalianCup.thumb.PNG.8ab8868fc66b690deb846715f87d4156.PNG

58fe9ad2efdbd_ItalianCupWin.thumb.PNG.1cb116fe52fe49ff00c6d8a92093e639.PNG

The title promised silverware and I'm glad to finally deliver a major trophy for the club. After years and years of doing awful in this tournament we went all the way and beat Juve in the final which was mega sweet. I shifted up the tactics and tried to play on the counter but in the end we undone them on set pieces with one free-kick and a header from a free-kick, Zavoli sealed the win with a penalty save. Awesome.

Transfers

Transfers.thumb.PNG.f96471e89e3bfd61af0e9e640a4d1243.PNG

Transfers were largely pretty tame, only one real contributor brought in as the board were stingy on funds but what a signing he was.

Key Arrivals - Mickyle Gertse came in to play as the second striker with Marcel giving us two elite scorers up top. Finishing with 29 goals and 11 assists with a 7.29 avg match rating he was more than worth the money.

Key Departures - None.

Best XI

TOTY.thumb.PNG.a066f3ea0c4c7dc2502f5d4e0085d389.PNG

Fritzsche wins POTY again as per usual, goal of the season scored by a youngster who played about twice. I've started to get a few academy lads involved now but some are just Italians so don't hold much relevance. I can't afford to play dual nationality players too much in case Italy decides they're good enough for a dreaded callup so it's a slow process at the minute.

Youth Intake

58fe9adba8cdf_YouthCandidate.thumb.PNG.0b86ee7938613b8f074730be9847ea74.PNG

Again not a lot to shout about, Valli looks like a good player but of course he's dual nationality and rejecting call-ups.

My first real good Sammarinese player has called it quits after 121 national team caps. A real legend. He was immense in Serie C and B and went on to have a decent career in the lower leagues of England.

San Marino National Team - 2032 Update

A pretty average year, at least we can say we are comfortably better than the Faroe Islands now as we beat them home and away.

Results

Results.thumb.PNG.b206b72109d6e52694616f2acc76fc6e.PNG

So yeah, we never really got beat by a lot but could only muster wins against the equally terrible Faroe Islands. Canti added two more goals to his goal record and in the last game I decided to throw Volpinari up top. Volpinari was a highly touted regen I had come through the academy but he was a left winger and I don't play with wingers. I was struggling to develop him and in the end sold him to PSG for a tidy fee. He's still amazing for San Marino level so I decided to play him out of position and he scored a banger. I think Volpinari and Canti will be the strikeforce going forward.

Ranking

Ranking.PNG.1eb6cd0b960b49452b6b500faad29e4a.PNG

Down about 25 places from last time but I don't really pay too much mind to the rankings to be honest, they fluctuate a lot and it just depends on the standard of teams we play. Not important until we hit say top 50.

Records

Michy.thumb.PNG.3e6611c1a587a1ecc51b24fffa0041b5.PNG

Michelotti retires after 121 caps. Came through the club academy, got us promoted from Serie C and was good in Serie B for a few years before I sold him on. A fantastic career and a great player. Kinda crazy I'm at the stage where players that came through my youth intakes are retiring lol. Happy retirement Michelotti.

After a long break from FM I'm back and ready to play.

Youth Intake

59439341e8ffe_youthintake.thumb.PNG.91255902bbfd968519a85007be816fb4.PNG

A pretty good intake. The top two players are beasts but have the dreaded dual nationality which means a long fight before they'll play for San Marino :(. In positions of need too.

5943933f1bb81_DeAngelis.thumb.PNG.54a8180a2bab9f44ad7c02750bf69852.PNG

De Angelis looks like he will be a special player. In CAM as well so he fits a position of need. He will be good enough to play for Italy probably so I'll have to stall him a bit to try and avoid him getting capped by Italy. 20 determination too.

Tamagnini.thumb.PNG.5f41eabd3b4c1f7d77152f12a4a229f9.PNG

Not as good but still brilliant. Doubt he ever gets in danger of playing for Italy.

Season 2032/33 - Serie A

Season In Review - Championes

Serie A

594558a20afb1_notthetable.thumb.PNG.745a74c5bb3e1ddb24334cc87917a9b1.PNG

Ayyyyyy we finally won the league! We started strong and never really faltered. We had a tiny bad patch towards the last few games which allowed Juve to come within 2 points of us but they couldn't win either of their last two games so we won it easily in the end. Hopefully this marks an era of dominance for us.

Champions League

5945593923e38_CLresults.thumb.PNG.bcf50ec1606496c627797259a0712573.PNG

Pretty disappointing to bottle the second leg vs Arsenal so horrifically. Unlike Arsenal in real life they absolutely dominated me from set pieces and scored 4 goals from corners and freekicks and had a penalty. Just an ugly, ugly implosion. Need a bit more cash to compete with the big boys I think.

Italian Cup

594559aa1a0e4_ItalianCupResults.thumb.PNG.343b377a5f025275bfc999bc8afc9587.PNG

Couldn't retain it.

Transfers

Transfers.thumb.PNG.55e6d371413815e000e5a66c9537d780.PNG

Key Arrivals - Only really Martinez was any good, the rest of them kinda sucked to be honest lol.

Key Departures - None.

Best XI

TOTY.thumb.PNG.06f232f424d861cc9b4d9be1d2445aaf.PNG

Arzilli makes his first appearance in the TOTY. A few years before he might turn down Italy to play for San Marino but he's a top top player.

I won manager of the year. Marcelo was player of the year and 20 year old San Marino native Marco Zavoli was named best keeper in the league, what a special special player! He finished with a massive 21 clean sheets and conceded the least goals. Here are his attributes for those wondering at age 20.

Youth Intake

Tamagnini.thumb.PNG.977ce4e3f7424b3709391dccd1e5dabc.PNG

The youth intake this year was pretty good actually. We got two really good youngsters, especially De Angelis who will be world class. Only issue is they both have dual nationality and won't be playing for San Marino for years. Oh the joys.

Takeover

Takeover.thumb.PNG.9d69472d47ebbfbdbde09d4d09d04dfb.PNG

Last few games of the season we were taken over finally after what seems like 20 attempts by various people. These people seem to have more money than the last chairman so I'm pretty happy to have them around.

-------------------------

So that ends this years season review as we finally breakthrough and win the Serie A. Glad to be back playing FM after a short break.
