Season 2016/17 - Ascenso!

Primera B Nacional - Campeón

tab1_zpsjmgbjz2d.png

We were predicted to be a part of the title race and rightly so based on how the team fared in the previous campaign. Fortunately I was able to keep the squad together and without the need (or funds) to strengthen, it was a case of roll with what we had. It would be a season that wouldn't disappoint as from the off we made our intentions clear, going 13 undefeated, drawing just 2 of those as we sat atop the table.

A minor blip that saw us lose at Chacarita Jrs and Crucero del Norte in quick succession would temper expectations a little, however big wins over Atl. Parana and Independiente Rivadavia kept us on track. Further big wins saw us clip Santamarina for 4 and Boca Unidos '5 on their own patch, as we raced to a league high 80 goals.

Ironically we would clinch promotion on the back of a draw as Almagro held us goalless, before the title was confirmed the following week, this time as we lost in San Luis to Estudiantes (SL). Alas it mattered little, we had secured the title by 11pts and promotion itself by 16. After a 16 year wait, we finally return to the top flight and the promise of a Clásico del Oeste against Velez Sarsfield.

A quick foray for us this year as we lost to Primera Division Union (SF).

No signings and only 1 player left as Vernetti refused to renew his contract and as such followed the promise of a bumper contract in Mexico with León.

Season 2017/18 - El Sueño!

primera_zpsjcqy2n3b.png

Primera Division - 5th

tab2_zps5gtrpmku.png

A magical season for us as we carried forward our momentum from winning promotion into our first year back in the top flight. Another fine start saw us haggle for places with the leaders as we lost just once in our opening 10 games, a 1-0 reverse to Lanus. With the season being relatively short at just 28 games, this start allowed us to brace a rough patch as we lost 4 on the spin away from home, including heavy 4-0 and 5-0 defeats to Arsenal de Sarandi and Boca Juniors respectively.

We would recapture our form with another unbeaten streak that encapsulated a fine 2-0 home win over Champions elect Rosario, before a heartbreaking injury time equaliser would prevent us beating Velez in the Clasico, leaving us sharing the spoils in front of a packed Ricardo Etcheverri. Our home record would be the catalyst for our fine season, losing just the once and winning 9 of 13 fixtures as we edged into 5th place and shock qualification for the Copa Libertadores at the first attempt.

In and out again as we fall to fellow Primera outfit San Martin (SJ) as they comfortable ousted us 3-1.

When Aquino gave us the lead just after the break, the place erupted. With barely a minute left in injury time we still led, then a lack of concentration and its 1-1. A share of the spoils in the first Clasico since the year 2000.

Again there were no direct funds allocated for transfers, so we had to negotiate and backdate deals in order to bolster the squad for our first attempt in Primera. San Lorenzo would provide 3 of our new faces, whilst the deal to bring in Matias Defederico a 2-time Argentine International proved to be a shrewd signing.

Season 2018/19 - De arriba a abajo!

primera_zpsjcqy2n3b.png

Primera Division - 25th

tab3_zpsyq9l3ri1.png

A near fatal twist of fortune this year, as a miserable season saw us finish 2nd bottom, avoiding relegation due to our performance last season and the Average Point system in Argentina. The truth is we never got going and although we spotted in the odd home win, we failed to convince anyone that we would be as competitive as we were last time round.

Notable results saw us lose 7-1 at La Bombonera to Boca Juniors (who romped to the title with 7 weeks left), concede 4 to Godoy Cruz and worst of all a 4-3 home loss to Velez in the Clasico del Oeste. Forutnately a 4-1 win over Gimnasia (LP) kept me in a job a week later, but with back to back home defeats to finish the season, next year needs to be a lot better for Ferro.

Copa Argentina - 7th Round*

copa3_zpskwhb9d8o.png

A mini Copa run for us as we are still in the competition, however with the Copa Argentina essentially splitting 2 seasons, the conclusion of this will carry into 2019/20. We beat Guillermo Brown, before hammering Rosario Central in somewhat of a surprise result. Our 7th round tie will see us face Independiente for a chance of a place in the Quarter Finals.

We were paired up with Mexicans Toluca for our opening gambit on the continent. Sadly a 2-0 home defeat in the 1st leg set the tone, as we then restored a little pride going down 4-3 in Mexico and straight out of the competition.

A thrilling yet devastating Clasico for us, as we lose 4-3, having led 3-2 midway through the 2nd half. There is little you can say to the Hinchas' after that!

German Pacheco was a big signing for us, bringing in a wealth of experience from his time in La Liga. Whilst Moreno and Colazo both plied their trade with Boca before joining the club. On the way out we would say goodbye to one of the club greats in Pupi' Salmeron as he hung up his boots.

Season 2019/20 - El Medio!

primera_zpsjcqy2n3b.png

Primera Division - 15th

tab4_zps5vq7hvsb.png

With the Argentine league evolving as we go, we move into a 24 team structure comprising of 46 games as we get back to playing each team twice. So with a long season ahead we needed to get off to a good start to ensure that last years disappointments wouldn't result and compound in a relegation battle this.

Unfortunately we would start poorly, winning just one of our opening 6 games as the pressure began to mount. However a turnaround was on its way and we would win 4 of our next 6, 3 of which away from home as we ensconced ourselves in midtable. From there on the season would be defined by small winning and losing streaks that neither took us up nor down. Our first Clasico win since 1998 would be the highlight as a full house saw us beat Velez 2-0. On the other hand we would lose the return 1-0 thanks to a late strike, whilst we also took thumpings off Boca Juniors 8-2 and Godoy Cruz 5-2 respectively.

The upshot of it all was a comfortable 15th place, a positive goal difference and a fair chunk of excitement as we scored 73 goals across the campaign.

Copa Argentina (2019/20)- 7th Round

capa4_zps5iazstyg.png

We would start the new season off with our last 16 tie in the Copa Argentina. With high hopes of continuing our run, the 3-1 defeat was hard to take.

Copa Argentina (2020/21)- 5th Round

copa4_zpsjuojkgtu.png

Due to the way the Copa is scheduled, we started next years competition as we finished this. A 1-0 loss to Colon put paid to our hopes instantly in disappointing fashion.

clas4_zpskoenxfaz.png

Finally a win in the Clasico as for the first time since 1998 we would get one over Velez in the Primera Division. The 2-0 win will go down in folklore for the 24000 Verdolaga that were there. Our 1-0 defeat in the return is not so fondly remembered.

Equip del ano - Facundo Cardozo

Transfers

tran4_zpsch8kzbhm.png

This year saw us attempt to balance the books as a raft of sales helped us cover existing debts and those mounting due to our wage expenditure. The loss of Martinez just 6 months into his tenure was a blow as Brazilians Ineternacional matched his release clause. The rest of our sales that totalled $6.5m were out of choice and allowed us to rebuild the squad somewhat.

Incoming deals saw us again plunder the free agent market. Peruvian Anderson Santamaria came in to anchor the midfield,  whilst Keepers Andujar and the aforementioned Martinez came in to compete for the No. 1 slot. Well travelled Argentina Pablo Mouche would add vital experience, whilst Cardozo made the risky move of swapping Velez for Ferro to underpin our defense.
