ManUtd1
ACF Fiorentina Champions League Final 2027/2028 - Stade Velodrome Fiorentina control the opening stages, with little to show for it but a tame 20-yard effort from Van Driessche that Rulli gathers comfortably. Who will blink first?! Austin with a header...OFF THE CROSSBAR!!! Cleared by Jackson, but City are living dangerously!!! That's twice that Fiorentina have been denied by the woodwork...will they regret it, or is this a harbinger of things to come?! Halftime. It's one-way traffic thus far, but the Italians have nothing to show for it. 45 minutes to play. Can Fiorentina find a breakthrough?! Will City strike on the counter?! As you know, that makes these saves so much more enjoyable!!! @Keano16 re Dembele...when that ball flew over Gherardini's head, and he was breaking...I paused the match to screenshot it, basically assuming they were going to equalize...he had a 2v1 in the middle, and that setup is virtually a guaranteed goal!! But Demele blew it!!! @hasdgfas and @GloryFan2002, Leeds is an open question. I haven't hit continue yet, and the annual end-of-the-year sackings don't seem to have happened yet. The job security screen looks like this right now: Mexico has been insecure since last October; I voiced an interest but nothing has happened. Everyone else is "secure" or better. Leeds is still in the inactive Championship, too; so, absent a promotion, they won't be available. They were last in the PL in 2019/20, finishing dead last. They're currently without a manager, after Gordon Strachan retired in June 2027. So, if they happen to get promoted, I could potentially dive right in. Well, having invoked the @Dave. Rule up above, I'd have to put my name in at least. @Repsalty Apples is very much relieved, and glad you asked. I had an entire narrative sketched out in my head for what would happen if we didn't win it this year...let's just say this is for the best. Alright, I've got a very brief season review to write, screenshots to grab, and then a job to resign from...all before I can push continue. Again, thank you all for reading and, more importantly, commenting now and again -- that's the lifeblood of this place and, as you all know, makes writing all this stuff out enjoyable. ManUtd1
It is genuinely hard to resign from Fiorentina. This has been a truly memorable journey with them, to the point that I can guarantee I'll play with them in future saves even outside of this construct (like I do with Malmo and a handful of other clubs). But it must be done. Immediately after receiving the following news clip, I walk down the hall of our hotel in Marseille to speak to the Chairman. Here goes nothing... If Bobby Manc takes over, I'll genuinely lose it.

ManUtd1
I did not expect this. Honestly, I'm very pleased. It should mean that Fiorentina continue to be a side to reckon with. ManUtd1
Paulo Bento's position at Roma is now listed as very insecure. I can't move to a club in Italy, though. That'd ruin the narrative in my head.

ManUtd1
Turned down an interview with the Catalans...I'm hoping that they hire someone who currently manages an eligible side... ManUtd1
Barcelona hired Unai Emery from Porto...and I got the Sweden job. Except...Panathinaikos and Partizan both opened up immediately as their managers left to take over Greece and Serbia, respectively. Big dilemma here, as if I'm managing a national side, I want to work to develop players for that country (which means managing a club in larger country). But, Panathinaikos and Partizan are fantastic jobs for the save. So, I either stick with Sweden and wait for a club position or resign and head to Greece or Serbia. This is making my brain hurt. ManUtd1
While I ponder, here is a quick overview of the 2028 Euros...won by France on penalties over Croatia.
ManUtd1
There's no place like home, there's no place like home Sweden July 2028 How could I doubt myself. Having taken the Sweden job, with the opportunity to manage the likes of Augustsson and Lundqvist again, how could I even think of leaving. Momentarily, I'll admit I was distracted. But I'm coming home. The World Cup in Spain is in 2 years. Qualification should be relatively straightforward, although Greece, Montenegro and Poland will stand in our way. It's time to get to work. The initial squad from the Euros is solid. But, I think there's room for improvement and several players are just too old.
ManUtd1
That was a genuine dilemma, but it wouldn't have made any sense to leave Sweden for Greece or Serbia. While my focus is on the club side of this challenge, both the narrative and players available make Sweden a "must do" at this point.
ManUtd1
Haven't advanced any further as I debate tactics for Sweden. I have an obscene number of talented forwards, so am weighing up a 4-4-2 (with DMs), or a 3-striker formation. The former could continue to employ the Total Football principles I've relied on thus far. The latter...may be more of a direct/counter approach. ManUtd1
In the midst of thinking, I updated my tracking spreadsheet. I don't have national teams as a separate sheet, or separate columns, because (1) the focus is on clubs; and (2) there's too much down time in between NT jobs.
ManUtd1
This is the tactical setup I'm currently tinkering with, given: (1) my abundance of high quality strikers; and (2) a lack of good wingers. This is all theoretical, though. Just thinking it through. Any thoughts would be welcome from the tactically-astute on here! It continues with the Total Football principles I've relied on, but moves to a 3-striker formation. I've decided against a 4312 narrow (dropping one of the forwards back), for now. (Grapefrukt is Swedish, not something I just made up. Nevertheless, I love it.) Edited January 15, 2017 by ManUtd1

Ceching You Out
Regarding the tactic, I'd be very curious to see how playing high pressure total football will work when you're conceding the wings. I'd suspect that there will be an easy out ball to the outside defenders/midfielders that breaks the press, but worth a few friendlies to see. If you're feeling really adventurous, there's also the true 3-4-3 with the outside defenders moved into the midfield strata.
BoxToBox
I like the system! If you have any proper workhorse forwards, ala Shane Long, I'd consider chucking a DF(s) in there from time to time, and watch the world burn as they mop up and sink every parried shot, block, deflection, backpass, etc.

I have more technical forwards...there is a big problem defending with 3 forwards, as our lines were definitely out of sorts in the first match against Iceland. I switched to a 4-4-2 for the Bulgaria (away) match...Vujovic (formerly of Malmo fame) scored the first goal from right midfield, possibly showing up my ideas. I'll post the match results shortly. I may tweak to DFs, or assign the wide forwards with specific man-marking instructions to help. I don't think I have the wingbacks to play a 343, but it may be worth a shot. Bottom line, until I'm managing a club side as well, I'm kind of stuck with this side.

ManUtd1
There's no place like home, there's no place like home Sweden September 2028 - Nations League Update All told, the first matches went well. 2 matches, 2 wins. The Iceland match started poorly, but we were by far the better side and our quality shone through. We played Grapefrukt 433 throughout. We were a little vulnerable on the wings, and may need to either issue player instructions to man-mark the opposition with my wide forwards, or find a different way. Away to Bulgaria I opted for Grapefrukt 442, a variant with with my standard back 4 and midfield, but a complete/advanced forward pairing instead of the complete forward with an attacking midfielder in the hole. An early red card for the home side meant that we really couldn't use the match for true tactical experimentation, though. I switched back to the 433 in the 2nd half, and found it worked well against a 10-man side. Heh. All told, a good start, albeit one in Division C. Elsewhere, Simeone has kept my Champions League winning side largely intact, with no one from my 1st XI being shown the door. He did bring back Ooijer from Malmo, 6 months after I'd sold him. Tidy profit for Malmo, at least. The transition from Grapefruit 2.0 to Simeone's 442 should be pretty straightforward, even if they've stumbled early on. ManUtd1
A quick glance around Europe...given that Leeds is still in the Championship, Greece/Serbia/Belgium do not align with the Swedish NT position, and I don't want to go back to Italy just yet...that leaves Spain, Germany and France for possible teams. So, who's in need of some Hakan? Both Monaco and Munch...Monche...Monkeygladbach are having a brutal start to the season. If that doesn't turn around soon, I expect an opening. Atletico is off the pace, so that could open up, too. Valencia, Saint-Etienne, Leverkusen and Reims seem to be in the vicinity of their expectations. Frankfurt was relegated in 2024 and has been in the (inactive) 2.Bundesliga ever since.
