In part, isn't that the beauty of the game? Anyone can play how they want to. It's only when we come into forums like this that the "how" comes into possible question. Depending on what's going on, it may not be anything - changing names being a great example of that.

For me, the narrative in my head is what drives this save. I find no joy in playing with Manchester United and winning everything over and over. It's boring. For me.

I love the history - of the sport, clubs, etc. Thus, in-game I love smaller/obscure sides that have something interesting about them. In might be a glorious past, long since faded to memory. Maybe I just like the club crest.

I love developing youth, but that isn't the focus for me here in this save; hence, less discussion/emphasis. I've also come to love the tactical side of the game, as the ME has grown leaps and bounds over the years; again, not that I'm a genius at it by any means, but I generally can make a tactic work in a way that it should.

Ok, I'm just rambling now. My point is that, for me, the narrative in this thread is what matters. Editing/reloading in any way that affects that, would detract from the story, for me. Sure, it was enjoyable to win the CL with Mönchengladbach at the first asking, but I felt the narrative suffered. It wasn't what I wanted our expected when I went there. On the other side of the coin, all that frustration at Fiorentina is what made the save so enjoyable - both at the time and now, looking back.

Chronicling the save on here enhances the fun for me, especially when people catch the little things going on. (Lukas Hrubes is an elderly brony, FFS...the one PM I got on that made my day!). So, onward we shall march...

That's true. Regardless of whether you struggle with La Viola or triumph immediately with Monkeygladbach, I come here for the Narrative with Telleus, Ludwig, Apples etc.

Sigh..... Junter.  :(

Junter is the real victim here. There's no way that Brendan is treating him with the same respect I would have.

I too find the story better than the results as we've seen with Fiorentina, the insanity that comes from losing makes the story so much better! I am actually kind of disappointed about how smooth the Leeds campaign went, I was actually super hyped about it. Also the loss off Junter after only 1 season was quite sad. Some of the best parts for me are the rivalries with the other coaches (Pep the Bald is my favourite #PepIsBald)!

Haha...it will be a sad, sad day when Pep retires!

I think this year will have more struggles. Only got a few matches in last night, scraped past Sturm Graz in my first Europa League matches..got hammered by PSG. Rosenburg was more straightforward, to get into the Group Stage... But I've definitely got some work to do.

I'm not entirely sure that we're ready for this.  We barely snuck past Sturm Graz...and Rosenberg rolled over.  Somehow we were a three-seed, though...overall, a decent draw.  CSKA is a weak 1st seed, and the Greeks should be ripe for the plucking.

The operative word being "should."

Ok, an obscene number of in-match crashes with Vitrex.  Trying to sort that out, but have gone back to the default dark skin for now.

Very sad.

I blame Pep the Bald, The First of His Name.  The ****.

Seems to be problems others are having (random, frequent crashes during a match), but the recommended solutions haven't fixed anything for me. It's a shame, but not that big a deal. I may try to fix it again, but don't want to spend a lot of time on it :onmehead:

I think Nantes was saying they really love you/your tactic with that shape of their Defenders and Midfielders, was it on valentines day?

How the hell are you neither an icon or a legend for Malmo? Must be because you left with a note in the night, they didn't take that break up very well.

December 2034 Mini-Update

Seriously, Ibrahima.  Enough is enough.  Quit the complaining.  What is there to complain about?  You're getting paid to play football.  We're sitting 3rd in Ligue 1 and won our Europa League group.  And, yet, you still want to leave.

You ungrateful ****. When I arrived, you were less than **** on a stick.  Now that we're going somewhere, you want out?  No.  You're lucky I don't send you to train with the reserves, or to Yemen for technical work.

Yeah, who's laughing now? You wankstain.

Gueye is just miserable.  I've got to move him on.  He punches a massive hole in my chi tank, with all of his whining.  We're having a tremendous season -- some inconsistency, but we're stealing points and putting together something special.  And he wants out.  I should lock him in a room with Lukas Hrubes, so that the miserable bastards can get off on each other's negativity.  I'm hoping he'll come around.  Eventually.

The side is truly starting to gel, though.  We've got a long ways to go, but there's reason to be optimistic even if we're consistently inconsistent as all young sides are.  Ander Sanz, the disgruntled Spanish wonderkid I signed on loan, is joining in January on a permanent deal.

And just look at where we sit.  Yeah, I'd say that we're making good progress here in France.  Sure, we're sitting 3rd...but PSG have 3 matches in hand.

Europe was far more straightforward than expected, although CSKA was the weak 1st seed I expected.  We've drawn Gerard Pique's Valencia in the first knockout round, which should prove to be a good challenge.

I meant to do a squad review before this season, but forgot -- it'll come next summer, after the 2034/35 recap.  Anyway, here's a quick look at where we currently sit.

February 2035 -- Europa League, 1st Knockout Round

So there I was, lurking in the corridor, wielding a metal folding chair waiting to leap out at that unsuspecting hipster **** Pique as he prepared to give his side a pre-match teamtalk before the first leg at the Nuevo Mestalla.  I heard footsteps, and did what came naturally...I leaped out and smacked that **** as hard as I could with the chair.

Only, it wasn't Gerard with his majestic beard.  It was Shakira, looking as lovely as ever.  But for the fact that she was knocked unconscious, multiple broken teeth and blood flowing freely from what may have been a dislocated jaw.

Her hips were quite divine.  But that's beside the point.  I could only admire them for a moment before fleeing at the sound of people coming.

I don't think anyone saw me.

But Gerard wouldn't shake my hand at full time.  Maybe it's because I spat on his shoes "accidentally" during a spat in the 2nd half.  Who wears blue leather shoes to a football match?  The **** deserved it.

Only, every phone call makes me jump.  Every knock at the door.  Only Ludwig knows what I did.  It was his idea, although now he says he was only kidding.  Kidding?  They had to wire her jaw shut, FFS.

This is just like that one time in Budapest.

March 2035 -- Europa League, 2nd Knockout Round

I have to admit, I'm a little rattled.  Turns out that someone on the maintenance staff at the Nuevo Mestalla did see me.  Thankfully, his eyesight was poor so no one has come knocking at my door.  Rather, Interpol kicked down the doors at  Jared Leto's palatial Italian palazzo in the dead of night...only to find that he hadn't returned from a night out in Rome.  He promptly claimed asylum at the Czech embassy and is still holed up there.  Ludwig continues to find the whole situation (and my growing anxiety) amusing, although I have to concede that he's right about turning myself in.  It's too late for that.

I think the side can sense my distraction...our playing in Rome didn't help.  After the match, I insisted on visiting Mr. Leto to show my support...only a few of the journos have commented on our resemblance, in the context of his iron-clad alibi for the night in question.  Drastic measures may need to be taken.

On the field.  What did you think I meant?  We blew a 2-goal lead in Rome and failed to score at home, FFS.  Utter nightmare, that.

Quick glance around Europe as we hit the final stretch...

City, Leeds and Arsenal are in a 3-way battle in England.  Barcelona are destroying the league, just like PSG destroyed them earlier today (*cough*).  The top 6 in Germany are actually battling it out, with Bayern threatening to become relevant again and win their first title since 2024/25.  Fiorentina and Inter are locked in a battle for Serie A.  Much of the same elsewhere, although Les Verts are looking solid for a top 4 finish and CL berth.

2034/35 Season Review

This feels all too...familiar.  Cyclical.  The cynical among us might even call it predictable.

I waltz in with Ludwig, we clear out the dead wood, sign a slew of talented youngsters, mold them into a fierce unit, and move on.  With Bobby Manc stepping in to ride our coattails as often as not.  The snide **** has won two straight Premier League titles with my Leeds.  Utterly shameless.

What's the point?  Yes, there is a joy in resurrecting the ghosts of the past to bring them the glory they deserve.  But I no longer feel like I'm building anything real.  It's formulaic.

I need something new.  A true challenge.  Something that breaks the mold.

I haven't even taken Ludwig into my confidence on this.  But I have plans.  Dreams, you might say.

And plans within plans.  Dreams within dreams.  That movie Inception is the cat's bollocks, yeah?

No, I'm not leaving Saint-Étienne.  The next step, though...I have a few ideas.  Something real.  A step back from the chaos of the top leagues, the bright lights.  Back to the heart of the game.  Serbia.  Maybe Greece.  Or, somewhere even more remote.  A true David to tackle the Goliaths of Europe.

I don't mean to denigrate what's been accomplished here, or before.  I just need something...different.

3rd in Ligue 1?  A solid achievement, but a little too on-the-nose, if you know what I mean.

This year, we've got the Champions League to contend with.  Finishing 3rd, we're automatically placed into the Group Stage, and will have a low seed.  Nevertheless, the side is coming together very well -- both in terms of individual development and results on the pitch.

Goals for 2035/36: Challenge for the Ligue 1 title.  Qualify for the CL knockout rounds.

Champions League 2034/35 Review

Nice one, Nice!  Yes, we have a newly-eligible side as Nice finally reached the final...only to fall short to Allegri's Dortmund.  If I can build up ASSE, perhaps they'll fall a bit from grace making for an interesting challenge down the road.  As suggested above, my next move will be to a smaller nation...

June 2035 Squad Review

This is long overdue.  Overall, the squad is in tremendous shape.  As I've indicated before, when scouting I try to ensure that I sign players who not only have potential (in terms of attributes and room for development), but who also have good personalities, aren't injury-prone, etc.  So, assuming things go to plan, it all comes together quite nicely.

This side is no different from Malmo, Fiorentina, Monkeegladerbakk or Leeds in that regard.  The pieces of the puzzle are coming together.  I figure we'll be challenging in the CL knockout rounds during the 2036/37 season -- we just need a bit more time for players to develop, and for the homegrown eligibility to kick in for a slew of youngsters.  As things currently stand, the side has the bare minimum 4/8 players.  Once January 2037 hits, I'll be in the clear as I've been focused on signing U18s.

In terms of tactics, I'm playing exclusively with PM Libre 2.0, PM In Catene 2.0 and PM Scatenato -- the three strikerless formations I used at Leeds.  My 1st and 2nd XI aren't quite settled for next year, as I'm still weighing up my options for the shadow striker positions.  I'm also fortunate in that, while some players are harping on about a new contract, the only one who has agitated for a move is Gueye.  So, I don't anticipate any need to backfill positions in the near future.

So, without further ado, here are Les Verts.  Note -- I've been putting off new contracts for most of my first team.  Their current contracts are what I brought them in on, but I'm going to spend a fair amount of time this summer tying people down to new/better contracts...but with my 3-year option.

Juma Karachi is my current and long-term starter.  The kid is massive, and took over for Staelens this past year.  Olawale is my 2nd choice.  Staelens will be moved on as soon as possible -- at his age, he isn't a starter and Olawale needs the match time to progress.

I don't see a need to sign anyone here.  Marcus Rosenburg (the young Swedish kid I signed at Monchengladbach, and then at Leeds) is interested, and his contract runs out next summer so he'd be relatively cheap...but I can't see it making sense. I'm just being a bit nostalgic, I guess.  He's better than Karachi, but I'm going to stick with youth.

Axel Da Silva is an ASSE youth academy graduate; he was one of the most promising players at the club when I arrived, and I've been trying to build him into my libero.  He's taken over for Anthony Henry in my 1st XI; Henry is crap -- not good enough, too old.  Muharemovic is a defensive midfielder I signed for the express purpose of retraining him to be a libero, as well as providing coverage in the midfield.  I really like him as a player.

My starting inverted wingbacks are Gueye and Jovanovic.  Gueye was here when I arrived, and has complained constantly about moving to a bigger side.  Nantsos will take over for Gueye if he leaves (or I bin him), but he isn't good enough to supplant him in the side.  Yet.  Nantsos is taking a while to learn his new position, despite playing there in my 2nd XI (and filling in occasionally) for the last 18 months.  He'll get there.  Roussel and Gibert are backups, nothing more.

Zsolt Nemeth and Adama Traore are my center-back pairing going forward.  Young, talented with a ton of promise.  Magne and Silva have been the backbone for the last 18 months (more the former than the latter), but their time has come.  I'll need to replace them soon, with Silva's contract running down at the end of the month and Magne just not good enough to continue on.  So, youth signings at centerback can be expected.

Central Midfielders

Mensah and Eteme are my starting central midfielders.  Tough, with a spark of creativity coming from Eteme in the left central midfield slot while Mensah shields the back 4.  Carlinhos and Ntolla are the backups for the more defensive perspective, while Knight is the more creative substitute.  Knight was signed on a free from Crystal Palace ... the idiots.  Lots of room for growth here, but I'm very happy with the pieces of the puzzle.  I don't see the need for signings here, unless someone truly incredible comes along.

a94749b63818d5598b3a041e0fd920a2.png

Attacking Midfielders

f03abeab303a7e9944c0eddcaf36feb1.jpg   e82b641b5c57ce2c41b4d254be781e81.jpg   88107074bd12168ea650b86d2e3682bd.jpg   2d40ab8abd4ae064003d7466183c701f.jpg   96de7a5f5842edc3b23d678941c882ea.jpg   1f3cc754633671f6fbd297a63cf06edf.jpg

This is where I've got the biggest headache.  It's a good headache to have.  An embarrassment of riches, if you will.

Fagerjord is my starting enganche -- the pivot of the attack.  Sreckovic is his understudy, rocking the man-bun like it was 2016.  Both are phenomenal young talents.

Flanking them are a phalanx of dangerous players: Sanz, Dinkov, Kazaki and Kolkka.  I genuinely struggle picking between these 4.  Not a bad problem to have, I guess.  Again, absent some world-class player becoming available at a reasonable fee, I see no reason to sign anyone here.

I can imagine you getting an e-mail from Bobby Manc, shortly after he takes over ASSE.

Of all people, he would take it personally.

The world doesn't revolve around you, Bobby.

Ludwig thinks I should say something.  Jared is still holed up at the Czech embassy in Rome, with the Spaniards seeking his extradition.  It boggles my mind, how no one has put two-and-two together...

I'll send him a fruit basket in solidarity.  By my calculations, that pretty much will make us even.

Jesus, that's some boost.

To be fair, some of them were on absurdly low wages.  This is the first team, now:

Eteme and Kolkka are still ticked that I didn't give them a contract in early June, so they'll be negotiated sometime soon.

Staelens, Petit and Magne are on contracts signed before I arrived.  Fagerjord is on $46k/week, with Karachi on $30k.week.  5 year deals, with 3 year-options.  Good business for players who should be able to take me deep into the CL knockout rounds.

Aye, to be fair, I was thinking of the roughly 50% boost. For a team with CL ambitions, it's not much. One Wayne Rooney, heh.

That, and I refuse appearance fees, unused sub fees and minimum release clauses, and require 3 year extensions. So, the base wage is a bit higher. But, I save money in the long run, I figure :D
