Romero on for Rocha.  48th minute, Delgado intercepts and pushes the ball forward quickly to Lodono, as Monaco look to counter...he spins and finds Morales who hits a ball first-time through to Romero... WHAT A TACKLE FROM HUTTON!

Free kick to Spurs in the 55th.  Poorly taken, Monaco clear ... but Tottenham recycle possession, with Balde -- Telleus' former charge at Brugge -- looking to create something on the wing.

Balde whips in a cross but Dolgyi clears, with Morales heading it along to Lodono who launches forward at pace!  But Mitrovic intervenes and recovers, as Lodono dribbled into a blind alley...

Having regained possession, Tottenham work the ball around the back, and in to Balde who knocks the ball wide left to Taylor-Lenegan...who tries a cheeky chip that is intercepted by Morales, headed down to Misee...who turns and may look to run at the Tottenham defense...

No!  He plays a ball over the top to the onrushing Lodono...who gathers and take a touch...he's got Romero in the box if he can find him...from the byline he RIFLES a low cross that Knights spills!!!!  IT NEARLY SNEAKED OVER THE LINE!!!  Romero gathers the rebound, turns and drops for Morales who's wide open 10 yards from goal....

Monaco...looking to build...Francisco Jose breaks up the play...but Misee pounces on the loose ball and, with his head on a swivel, finds Romero who plays a first-time ball for Lodono, looking to get behind the Tottenham line...but it's a poor ball, behind the Colombian, who plays it right back to Romero...35 yards from goal...HE DRIVES INTO THE BOX LIKE A FORCE OF NATURE ... ANOTHER SAVE FROM KNIGHTS!!!

15 minutes to play.  Telleus' men starting to play more conservatively.  They know how to kill a match.

13 minutes.  Monaco with a free kick 40-odd yards from goal.  Lodono plays to Misee, lurking unmarked well outside the Spurs' 18... He takes a touch...and spots Romero with a step on his man... ANOTHER SAVE FROM KNIGHTS!  THIS ONE, A ROCKET TO HIS NEAR POST!

Ten minutes to play!  McCabe preparing to come on, presumably for Morales.

Tottenham are pushing forward with reckless abandon, exposed at the back to Monaco's deadly, lightning-fast counterattacks...although this one fizzles out, as Romero launches a shot from 35 yards into Row Zed.  Telleus is furious!

A long goal kick from Tottenham, as they try to launch forward...Monaco intercept and are off again, Lodono running at the defense with teammates in support...he sucks the defender in and dishes to Misee, bursting into the box...YES!!!! THAT'S HIS HAT-TRICK!!

Monaco / Scotland

2051/52 Season Review

By this point in my career, everyone knows what comes next.  That my time in Monaco is over.

Frankly, that might be a good thing.  Not only am I off to Sweden tomorrow with Scotland, I have let my rehabilitation slide during these past few hectic weeks.  Not good.

After the tournament, it's back to the chateau in France for a long, well-deserved rest.

Goals for 2052/53: Get out of the Groups in Sweden, and make a run through the knockout rounds.  Get Scotland focused on the 2054 World Cup, and begin working the youngsters into the side.  Consider tweaking the current tactics so that the libero moves to a DMC slot, due to the inability to continue training McCabe.  Be patient for the next club position.

Champions League Review

This is thoroughly documented above.  Nevertheless, it was quite the year.  Telleus' 10th Champions League victory.  And, another team has become eligible.  An English side, no less.  This is the save that never ends...

I haven't played with a striker since 2030

Definitely staying strikerless.  The only question is where Hakan goes next.  I'm of a mind to just focus on Scotland and wait for Fenerbahce (who just appointed a new manager in May), Panathinaikos (same manager for nearly 6 years), or Partizan (same manager for nearly 20 years) to open up.

The only other club I would consider right now is Sampdoria.  Atletico, Genk, Leverkusen, Nice, Tottenham and Valencia are not appealing at the moment.

Atletico, Valencia and Sampdoria will be good fun, I'm just not sure I want to be at a big club in a big league. I want you be somewhere...different...this next time, while pursing forward with Scotland, of course.

By winning you have made Tottenham available now and well done on that. :)

Of all English sides to become available, they're really not too bad. Managing in England just isn't very appealing at the moment. :kriss:

I'll eventually get to them, though!

2052 European Championships Squad Overview

Alright, let's get right to  it.  Here is the squad coming to Sweden.  Sadly, we have no matches scheduled for Malmo at this point.  Maybe if we get to the knockout rounds...

Caldwell has been Manchester United's keeper for nearly 20 years, and doesn't show any signs of slowing down.  He's my top choice at the moment.  No doubt.  Strachan is just a warm body on the bench.  McClaren is one of three Monaco players in the side, and looks to be the keeper of the future for the national side.  We're in good shape here.

Liberos

ea53d22fd6b10610acc08eab996fe292.jpg 612a13a16b04dba8cb1dddca2f538048.jpg

Cadden was given the nod early on in my Scotland tenure, over an aging midfielder (Stanton) who I elected not to bring to Sweden, in favor of the young McCabe.  Cadden isn't ideal, but he's got a slight edge on McCabe for the time being.  McCabe seems to have some real potential...which is why he was brought over to Monaco!

My starting fullbacks are Donnelly and Holt, with Ferguson and Frizzell providing some depth.  Holt is fantastic for my formation, as he's a natural wingback/winger that can play fullback.  Hutton is the rock at centerback (Tottenham lad...), and he'll pair with either Young or Martin.  I'm leaning towards Martin.  Dorrans is the 4th choice, but not a terrible one at that.

a94749b63818d5598b3a041e0fd920a2.png

Midfielders

Rae remains the star of my central midfield, and will play in the more attacking, left-sided slot.  Milne and Polworth have been battling for the defensive-minded right midfield spot, but I'm inclined to give Dickov a go.  Another Monaco lad, he's developed nicely over the last year.  If he doesn't start, he'll definitely see a lot of the field.

Attacking Midfielders

Miller is the grandpa of the side, and I can't look past him for my deep-lying targetman role.  He'll likely be flanked by McAllister and Baird -- two fantastic young players, the former has developed a ton at Rangers over the last 2 years.  Maxwell, Macleod and McBridge provide solid options off the bench.

a94749b63818d5598b3a041e0fd920a2.png

Final Thoughts

This side isn't ready to challenge for the World Cup in 2 years' time.  But, we've got some great young players that are starting to come through, with a slew of others at Monaco (now, or with deals arranged for the future).  2054 may not be our year.  But, 2058 and 2062 are looking very promising.

I'm not tweaking the tactics at this point, as I suggested I might do up above.  We're playing the same suite of tactics employed at Club Brugge, West Ham and Monaco.

Portugal is up first, followed by Wales and then England.  Matches won't be played until much later today.  $20 says that Bob is there, going commando in his kilt.

It's utterly absurd.  To be fair, Brugge was in tremendous shape before I arrived.  West Ham was also in great shape, and I focused on the CL run.  Monaco wasn't in as good a shape as either the Belgians or English, but we nevertheless pulled it off.

And to think this thread hit peak-absudity with CR7's cult...

2052 European Championships, Group Stage

A fantastic start to the tournament in Goteborg, as we took an early, commanding lead against the Portuguese and held off their late onslaught.  3 key points, especially as England and Wales drew.  A win over Wales and we're through.

Given the length of the tournament and relative abilities of our next opponents, I decide to gamble and fully rotate the squad for the match against Wales in Norkopping.   An early goal from McBride  was the difference.  Not pretty, but the result is all that matters.

Against England in Atvidaberg, Baird fired the opening goal past Knights, who so bravely held off Monaco several weeks ago in Moscow.  England fought back bravely, battering the woodwork repeatedly.  But, 2 late goals from Rae and McAllister sealed the match.

3 matches.  3 wins.  Brilliant.

We'll face Russia next, back in Atvidaberg.

2052 European Championships, Second Round v. Russia

It was great to see Berezin (screenshot) again this afternoon before the match.  A massive, massive keeper...shame he went to PSG after I left Brugge.  He's a monster, and has likely kept PSG from relegation single-handed.

Which means we've got to find a way past him...which Millar does early in the first half, slotting one home from 17 yards.  A dream start, if we can hold...I need not have worried.  Hamish fires an unstoppable rocket into the top left corner from 20 yards just a minute later.  2-nil, and we're looking good value for the quarterfinals.

Until Russia pull one back in the 21st...suddenly things are a bit more nervy.

We reach halftime but have been our own worst enemy.  We need to get more shots on target, lads.

Caldwell makes a few big saves to keep the score level...and then Mcleod heads home from 7 years in the 72nd, to give us back our 2-goal cushion.  It's his first goal for Scotland, and we're almost there...

That's the match.  We're off to face Switzerland in Stockholm for a berth in the semifinals.

2052 European Championships, Quaterfinals v. Switzerland

Gantenbein (screenshot) warming up in the Swiss goal...it's like "old home" week here, crossing paths with my former keepers.  He promises to fare better than his former teammate, Berezin.

The Swiss frontline is slow, so we're going to push high up the field, and try to keep them pinned back with no real outlet.

An early goal from Rae, sprung free in the box after we play a free kick short ... once again, the match starts according to plan.  Gantenbein, head in his hands, as he was beaten at his near post.  The expanded Friends Arena is rocking.

Shortly before the half, our high press forces a turnover and we strike with deadly precision.  McAllister this time, fed by Rae.  2-nil, which is the scoreline as we enter the half.

Everything is going according to plan.  We set out in the 2nd half to strangle the match, crush any spirit left in the Swiss.

Mission accomplished.  We're through to the semifinals.  The bad news?  Hamish's tournament is done.

We'll face Belgium in Goteborg.  The Czechs (featuring many of the players I'd recruited to Reims) will face the Ukraine at Ibrahimovic Park in Malmo.

2052 European Championships, Semifinals v. Belgium

A massive match on only 2 days' rest.  Tired legs.  The Belgians with an extra day of rest.  Some rotation is required.

We start strong, but Belgium claim first blood in the 14th minute, through Christiaens (one of my former players at Brugge).  This is the first time we've been behind all tournament.

Belgium score their 2nd in the 38th, meaning we've got it all to do.  We've controlled the match, but have nothing to show for it.  At halftime, we make our substitutions and switch to PM Lupo Rabbioso.  The lads need to dig themselves out of this hole.

We control, in every possible respect except the one where it matters most.  It's over when Belgium hit their 3rd in the 83rd minute.

But...a glimmer of hope?!?  McAllister buries one in the 83rd...surely there isn't enough time left?!  There isn't.  Belgium soak up the pressure.  We're out.

I'm at a loss for words.  By every right, that was our match.  The shoe being on the other foot doesn't feel so good.

Serbia, Greece and Turkey...maybe...?

Galatasaray's manager took over at Turkey.  Serbia hired Olympiakos' former manager, who had been sacked in June after they finished 2nd.  Greece hired PAS Giannina's manager.

So, we're in for a bit of a wait...Sampdoria was relegated in June, they're off the table for the next year.

Among the other eligible sides, we'll see what comes open.  But, I have zero intention (at this point) of accepting an offer with one of them.

Never trust a man who, when left alone in a room with a tea cozy, doesn't try it on.

September 2052 Mini-Update

A very underwhelming return to the international scene.   15 minutes of brilliance against Norway is not enough.  Especially when we nearly blow a 3-goal lead, and then drop all 3 points at home to a Ukraine side that didn't even come to play football.

Unacceptable.

Back to the chateau.  It's quiet there.  Just Emma and I these days, long hours alone to talk.  The boys are Monaco and Apples is help her father with the family business.  She rarely even calls home these days.

Rehabilitation is going well, and am walking now with just a cane.  No more of that ****ing walker with the tennis balls on the feet.  That ****ing thing was embarrassing, to say the least.

Law enforcement indicate they have, finally, a solid lead on that night in Valencia.  I don't know if that is good or not.  After all, if it was, as I suspect, someone close to Shakira, wouldn't that mean that they'll divulge my role in the events back in February 2035...?

I've always wanted to go to Switzerland to see what the army does with those wee red knives.

October 2052 Mini-Update

That 1-3 loss to Portugal at Hampden?  The scoreline flatters us.  We were atrocious.  The first half against Norway wasn't much better.

I screamed my head off at the lads.  I've been too lax.  Too soft on them.  Too much time in France.  I need to get back out on the road, keeping in direct contact with the side and players on the bubble.

Emma bought me a beautiful, hand-carved wooden cane.  Very stylish, in an old-school British kind of way.  But with a modern twist.  The lads were taking the ****, until I fined them each 500.

No news on the club front.  Partizan sit 5th, with only 6 wins from 12.  But, after 20 years I figure there's some loyalty there that will preclude a prompt sacking.  Panathinaikos sit 5th, with 3 wins from 6.  Fenerbahce sit 11th, with 2 wins from 6.

Any of the three would be great.  But, I find myself hoping for Partizan.  No particular reason.  Just my gut.
