[FM10] 2009 skin and save as note button

I really like the 2009 skin, but the big problem with it is that it doesn't have buttons to save news and messages as note, nor to subscribe/unsubscribe. I've discovered michaeltmurray's 2010 skin with tree as well as his 2009 base skin for 2010, and was trying to see if I could lift a file from the former to the latter to get the 2009 skin to get those buttons. The file news item.xml has pieces of code that mention the save as note and subscribe buttons. However, simply moving the file doesn't work (would have been too easy).

So could someone help me with this? I know there's guides for this stuff, but I'm really bad at following instructions from guides and I only want this little thing.
