Loss of form at end of the season

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone!

I've been playing Football Manager for years, think since 2007 if my memory is correct. From all these different versions i have been able to adapt to the changes which were made to have a fun playing experience. Until now, I started a season with Bury and my aim was to make the play off's. I had a fantastic season and was 2nd for around 38 of the 46 games. In the final stretch to the end of the season i lost form and ended up slipping into the play off's (I lost against Gillingham). I just couldn't overturn the loss of form! i tried everything and it just didn't work.

My second season i went to Middlesbrough who were relegated from the Premier League. I had a fantastic pre season, bought all the correct players, set up my tactics, won all my friendly's against better opposition. Then when the league started i couldn't buy a win for the life of me and was sacked in October with the team in 23rd place! in all honesty my team should have walked the league!

So, questions

1. Why does a team lose form, what could be the cause and how do i fix it?

2. Any other useful tips you fellow managers can give me?

Thank you very much and i appreciate your help.

Pressure rises towards the end of the season meaning matches are more important.

Pressure/Important matches is a hidden attribute which you can see on the scout/coach reports.  Players with high levels handle the situations better and continue to perform, flaky players with no backbone crack under pressure and don't play to their best.

EDIT

Should read the full post

Why do teams lose form IRL? All teams go through spells of good & poor form during a season.  Your job as manager is to extend the good spells as long as you can and minimise the bad ones.

How do you do that? well it depends on your team, their personalities and the matches.  Some players need a kick up the arse, others need an arm round the shoulder.  You should know your players and which respond to which type of treatment.

If you are unsure get an assistant with high levels of motivation & man management then learn from what he recommends.

To add to cougar's reply, it's also becoming more important to watch matches and adapt how your team is playing based on what is happening on the pitch (if necessary).  The AI managers are becoming smarter and are actually pretty good at changing how their team is playing during matches.  If we don't understand these changes when (if) they occur and adapt accordingly, and add on player pressure at the end of the season, then poor results can happen.

I'd also suggest that in your second season with Middlesbrough you didn't suffer a loss of form because you didn't have any form in the first place.  Winning friendlies, even against bigger clubs, isn't the same as playing competitive matches.  As you put it, you couldn't buy a win, so I'd start by looking at your tactics.
