FMS,

A recent incident has brought me, more quickly that I anticipated, to a decision I was mulling over anyway. I have been a moderator on FMS for some three years now, plus a year before that with ‘helper’ status. I feel that, whilst Faramir, Raptor and I have been working together, the forum has come out of one of its darkest spells and is now producing a quality of writing of which you all should be proud.

However, I no longer have any appetite for the day-to-day running of the forum. My life is becoming busier with things away from the forum and I feel the time is right, given that we’ve just gone through an award ceremony, to hand my reigns over to someone else.

Tonight’s contretemps with bluebellsareblue has, I won’t lie, brought my decision forward. I really have neither the appetite nor the ambition to further deal with people who cannot see the line between fiction and reality.

I have thoroughly enjoyed moderating FMS, in my opinion it is clearly the best forum on the SI boards and I will continue to be active as a writer.

Thank you to each and every one of you who has given me support during my time as moderator, and I hope to see the forum continue to go from strength to strength.

Terk

Thanks for all your hard work Terk. You've helped keep this place going and been as dedicated as anyone could ask you to be.

Hopefully you will even enjoy your writing more as a result of this reduction in responsibility!

will be strange not seeing Terk as mod, always associated 'the mods' with either Serpico, Terk or dafuge.

Ah yes, the holy trinity of mods.

RIP :D

I'm not dying, for ****'s sake :D

But cheers for the sentiment nonetheless, george :)

Thanks Terk, I'm actually well known for my moving funeral speeches. It's a rare talent. A rare, rare talent. :D

Have all your posts on this website been on FMS then HD? That's dedication for you, I think we've found our new mod ;)

1) No, but a huge number of them have.

2) I am an anti-authority figure, and therefore cannot be a moderator. Also, I have less time than Terk. Didn't you see my baby scan in the community thread? :D

I'd suggest steering clear of Republican conventions and Utah.

Let's not go there ;)

"Terk's Torch" (Fictional Anecdotal Short Story) by copperhorse21

I sit staring at my screen, wrung out yet satisfied from a year of grinding my nose on the wheel of innovation. Not only did I crank out enough quality writing to win three major awards this season, but I had to skip the rousing award's after-party because another fire was started on my watch. This time, like all the other times before it, a new writer decided to write something so clearly forbidden in this forum, it staggered my imagination. I, once again, swallowed my bile and offered polite feedback regarding the appropriate use of this forum. I, once again, had to get ridiculed and read through another scathingly bitter private message from an angry individual who felt he should be able to write whatever he wanted without consequence.

Enough, I argue. When will it stop? When will it be that I can spend time on the things I enjoy like celebrating a fine year of quality writing (the likes this forum board has never seen before) instead of chasing down dead ends and banning hooligans who threaten to make this little corner of the forum board like so many other blog-like forums on this site and others?

I had a good run, I'll admit it. But, like those who came before me, the time has finally come for me to pass the torch on to the next moderator. Who will it be? Will someone from the past remember the foundations of this forum and return us to its siren's call? Will a noob decide his message of hope for the future should be embraced by those who seek solace from the sour life in the outside world? I don't know. I've got some hot prospects I wish would take it over because I've given so much of my energy to make it better. Letting it fall to the wayside would be a travesty causing me almost as much pain as watching Liverpool squander another EPL season struggling to qualify for European competition.

The positive memories are great, but they are fleeting. I want the time to write a really good story that others want to read. I want to return to the bliss of ignoring the idiots posting drivel and I want to recapture all the lost time from my day they suck like ravenous leeches.

Don't misunderstand me. I've made some very good friends from all corners of the globe. Together, we've delighted in the good and suffered through the bad. But, like any good football match, the final whistle sounds and the final score is posted. The memory of the moment will be remembered forever. Well, at least during my time on this planet. However, like all the supporters who've passed through these gates before me and all those who'll enter in the future well after I've moved on, we've made a good run of it.

That's how I want to remember it, anyways.

(This is my tribute to you and your work, Terk. Thank you. You will never walk alone.)

Sorry to hear this, Terk.

I can't imagine the hassle of having to deal with people that just don't seem willing to accept that certain places on the internet have certain rules, and that if you don't want to follow the rules, then you should just leave.

For the record, even though my time here has been short, you've always appeared to be a highly professional mod, despite the fact that you are also a very integrated member of the forum that you administrate. Great job.

I was thinking that we might hear an announcement like this after last night's events.

I agree, this is probably the best forum in the Community, partly because it's a lot less frequent for it to be bombarded with stuff that breaks the rules (which happens a lot in LLM and T&T) and partly because all the users seem to get along, most of the time (which doesn't happen in GQ and OTF).

Now I'm not entirely sure how the process for electing a new mod goes. But are the people on FMS going to have a say in the new mod or not?

I have made suggestions for my replacement to both Raptor and Faramir.

Terk - Sorry to hear this pal

You've been a Moderator since I've joined the Forum, and a darn good one too. I'm sorry to see you won't be doing that anymore but as long as you stay as a writer, nobody will complain. You have helped in a massive way to bring the forum to it's exceptionally high standard of late, and for that, we thankyou

You helped us all, and we never walked through a storm :)

Really sad to see it has come to this Terk.

I've moderated a fair few forums in my time and have also had to deal with people who get a thrill out of breaking rules, who don't read rules and get angry when as a moderator you fulfill your duties and take them to task for it, and when users can be so immensely annoying that you wonder why you even bother to do it anymore.

(A few too many political forum moderatin for me I think!)

That being said, this forum, and the FMS community is one of the nicest and supportive ones I've been a part of and I wish you the very best in your writing Terk and if it helps you win Story of the Year then all power to you. You'll be missed as a moderator, but as you are sticking around, it's still a win win situation for FMS as we haven't lost you as a contributor, which would of been a far greater loss.

I know its really sad. I've only been around the Stories forum for a little while but its one of the few places that makes you feel welcome (as long as you follow some basic rules) and you don't have to worry about what you post about (normally) unlike some forums [*cough*]gamefaqs[/*cough*]. This is in no doubt down to you and the other Mods. Thanks for all your work and good luck for the future.

Simon,

I am truly sorry to hear that you are stepping down but I fully understand your reasons and respect your decision. I'd like to add my personal thanks for the huge contribution that you have made to FMS, as a writer, moderator and all round good egg! Please do keep writing and contributing to the community.

Argh, we had our disagreements terk ;) (pictures lol) But you were also reasonable and halpful, fantastic moderator, and I'll miss you on here as a mod, as I'm sure everyone will.

I hope you keep on writing though Terk.

Adam

EDIT: THOUGH not tough

RIP Simon :(

I'm not gonna say you were the best FMS mod ever, because you weren't :p (I think we all know who that title belongs to ;)) But you have done an excellent job here both as a moderator, a writer, an awards organiser and most importantly as a friend. Your efforts haven't been unappreciated, and I hope that wherever you are in the next life, you will find happiness.

What do you mean he isn't dead

I'll echo the sentiment of pretty much everyone here and say thanks for a doing a great job in the past, and hope you have more fun in the future.

I never really thought of you as a mod, definately just a communtity member and a fine one at that, oh and also someone who use to edit a crapload of my posts for dumb mistakes, more like an editor :)

Anyway thanks again, and here I thought that the edit function would save a lot of your hassels

What is it with this weird thing called "life" robbing the forum of its moderators :/ :p

FMS will miss your guidance Simon, make sure you don't bugger off altogether :)

And now that people don't have to suck up to you anymore, no more FMSer of the Year awards for you :D

Without knowing the details of the incident that was the straw that broke the camel's back, it is still sad to hear that someone can't carry on with their chosen responsibilities because of the thoughtless actions of another.

As Panpardus said earlier, I never really thought of Terk as a mod either, just a fellow writer who did some sterling administrative work in FMS on the side.

Terk, I look forward to reading more of your fine work now that the duities of moderator no longer weigh you down. Your past endeavours have been truly appreciated though.

I managed to miss this thread previously, although I got the general drift from the Community thread anyway!

Thanks for all your time spent as a mod Terk, especially since it coincided with the period of the forums where we lost all editing privileges so dumbos like me (when I stopped being idle and actually wrote a story) had to keep sheepishly posting requests for corrections to my stories by mods

Cheers for all the messages guys :)

However, after taking the weekend to think about it all, and after other things were brought to my attention, I've decided to postpone my resignation. Instead of getting yourselves all worked up over my 'death' now :D just take this as a message of my intent to resign my post as a moderator after the 2009 FMS Awards. Basically I just need another year of getting drunk on power and banning people :p
