FM17 Youth Team Challenge

First Steps

·        Add a manager as unemployed.

·        Go on holiday until the reset date of the nation of choice.

·        Retire the poor manager after such a mediocre career.

·        Add your new manager, with chosen nationality and lowest possible reputation and qualifications

·        Choose a newly promoted club of your dreams

Challenge Rules

·        No loans or transfers in are allowed, but you can sell players, and you can loan them out.

·        If you get sacked, you have to start again.

·        No editing of any kind allowed. (though my start year really does prevent this anyway)

·        No international management until completion of the challenge.

·        Signing backroom staff is allowed. Signing players on trial or greyed out isn’t allowed.

The Aim

·        To win your chosen countries top division and win the Champions League with a previously unplayable side and using only your academy as a way of acquiring new players.

I will also be keeping track of each and every player that comes through my academy but only while they are at my club. Any players at my club in the beginning I will keep until necessary, at least until first academy in take. My game starts in 2055, as this is the year I reached in a previous save game that I’ve kept with for fun the past few months. Decided to take up the youth challenge in the future as something completely different.

So, that is the extent of my squad for my first season in charge. It will be an interesting first season in charge, as I think the squad will do well because they've previously recruited well from higher division sides. Any players that appear in the first list but not the second won't be around after the first season. We just need the first youth intake in March so we have a playable squad for the first year.

I recruited my two key staff members today – stealing both the assistant manager and head of youth development from non-league side Marine. Other staff will follow to fill the gaps, though many of the positions were already filled and we’re now just recruiting for those missed. Having no real need for scouts as we won’t be purchasing players, we are filling the scouting team with data analyst, but are bringing in a scout to be the one who researches upcoming opposition.

In my one and only friendly before the league season kicks off, we surrendered by getting beaten 3-0 at home by Leeds United U23’s. There was little to shout home about, and at the end of the game the potentially decent Roy Gray announced he was leaving on a free transfer to join Dagenham and Redbridge. Bugger. It seems he won’t be featuring on the youth table again.

Torquay United (0) – (0) Hampton & Richmond

It looked like both sides were fortunate to escape with a point a piece in this tie, we wasted golden chances and only had Patrick Davis to thank for making two key saves that kept us level. We looked composed but lacked any real bite, but man of the match Colin Hyland performed admirably at the heart of the defence to block out each Torquay attack. There is a lot to work with and towards, but for the moment, an early clean sheet is important as is getting the team to gel.

Thanks man, we will see how it goes!

Hampton & Richmond (4) – (2) Woking

Naming an unchanged side paid dividends for us as we came out victors in a ding dong battle of attacking success and defensive failures. Gideon Owusu put us ahead in bizarre fashion, sliding in to win a ball in the box and somehow poking it past the keeper. Strikes from Gareth Cooper and newly appointed captain Henry Ralte pushed us further ahead Ricky Nicholls finished the scoring with a neat header from outside the six yard box. We played really well, much like a side who gained promotion last season. Henry Ralte was named man of the match and he fully deserved the accolade. I’m very pleased we got our season off to a good start at home.

Hayes & Yeading (1) – (4) Hampton & Richmond

This was well and truly the Mehmet Han show as he completely outclassed and outplayed the home side with a barrage of attacking quality. Despite not looking technically gifted in any way, the forward smashed a nineteen minute first half hat trick of pure quality. That rattled the home side beyond belief and they never really recovered. We kept attacking, knocking on the door whenever we could muster it, and when Henry Ralte scored on the back of the home side bagging a consolation, we were chuffed with the final result. Han didn’t even come back on for the second half due to fitness, but ended up as the player of the game.

Hampton & Richmond (1) – (0) Hendon

We picked up yet another fine victory against a side who had started just as strongly this season as ourselves. We were gifted with plenty of chances throughout the game but couldn’t pick up a goal to boost our performance, and Hendon were gifted the best chance when they were awarded a penalty after Asiedu but our hero Patrick Davis kept the ball out with a lucky save. We eventually found a way through when a corner landed at the feet of Ricky Nicholls, and he lashed it home easily. We had two more chances from corners, but couldn’t find the back of the net, and luckily this time, we were able to avoid it coming back to haunt us. The game was also a fan event day, with a bumper crowd of over a thousand coming to watch us, setting a new record in the process.

Hampton & Richmond (4) – (2) Kingstonian

A brace from both Ricky Nicholls and Gideon Owusu helped us overcome a tough home test from Kingstonian, who themselves were very unfortunate to get nothing from this match. Owusu looked on fire in the game, creating darting runs and emerging as a true playmaker for the side. Kingstonian overthrew our lead but we fought back well to emerge winners in this game. We are creating a lot of chances in each match and I’m impressed with our attacking prowess at current. Owusu was named man of the match and rightly so, and his performance helped lead us to the top of the division, and maintain our unbeaten start to the season, a run which has seen us score four times in a match three times in five.

Dartford (1) – (2) Hampton & Richmond

A superb performance from Henry Ralte helped us to overcome a disappointing start to the game in which we went behind early on. Dartford were better than us for large parts of the game, and there was a worrying moment in the first half when Patrick Davis went coy with an injury. It turned out to be a stubbed finger and we will only miss him hopefully for the next match, but he will have to go on the bench anyway as cover. Ralte scored a wonderful header from a corner, and late in the second half found a way to break an offside trap and put us ahead, very much against the run of play. I am very impressed with the way we came from behind in this match, and definitely feel like there is a decent core squad here to continue working with. It was also a proud moment for Danny Wood as the seventeen year old made his debut.

Poole (1) – (0) Hampton & Richmond

Sitting second from bottom, Poole looked devoid of life, and they certainly played like it. They managed only two shots on goal – we managed zero. It was a horrendous performance from both sides and it played out like a relegation fodder battle. We had five players booked with yellows in the first half alone (which later turned out to be a fine of £500) and saw Gideon Owusu sent off early in the second half. We tried to hold on but Poole took advantage of the numerical situation, and when they scored, we still looked toothless. Henry Ralte was absent due to making his debut for the India national side, something I was proud to see, him playing the whole match of a 0-0 draw with Oman.

Hampton & Richmond (2) – (3) Sutton United

Still without captain Ralte, who is still on duty, and without Owusu, we had to make changes to our formation, and it backfired fairly early on as we went two goals down in seven minutes. We struggled to defend at every moment, and Sutton looked like a side more up for the game than we were. We attempted a couple of fightbacks, Ricky Nicholls and Charlie Jones bagging a goal apiece, and despite us having more possession, we just couldn’t make anything from it, leaving a disappointed set of home fans. We lost Simon Matthews to injury for two to four weeks, a time span that we might struggle to find cover for at his position. That is a real concern for the moment.
