Imagine being a season ticket holder at Middlesbrough. 0.69 goals scored per game... it would hurt my heart.

We can't be too open as we tend to go one nil down early against better Premier League outfits. That would leave us with a mountain to climb early on and teams can hit us on the counter when we go chasing the equalizer.

Being solid at the back and nicking a goal or two gives us the best chance of bagging points in the Premier League as we were predicted by the media to finish 18th and 20th this and last season respectively :)

How annoying. Btw love the highlights - not played FM18 or 19 - graphics are so much better.

Graphics are definitely up a few notches, but the game certainly got tougher too! Reading back my old threads made me realize how much easier it was to improve the quality of your squad and progress up the table season by season!

January Transfers 2021/2022

Rob Holding

722a1a8fee23e66b6a202cb54bb0384d.png

Rob Holding looks better on the game than in real life and the tough tackler is actually quite quick for a center-back. The Englishman is brought in to replace the outgoing Julian Jeanvier, whose contract is up end of this year and we are not intending to extend the 30-year-old's stay at the club.

Tom Krauss

7c10c038b2fefe5cb83ca9c73e1f741e.png

Tom is a bargain at 3.8 million pounds and he can grow into a Premier League quality holding midfielder for us if he develops nicely. He will use the second half of this campaign to adapt to the squad and learn English before he gets himself into the matchday squads \o/

I find this interesting. If they are worried about losing Scholesy, why wait till the end of the season for the contract extension? If they have time to make contingency plans, they should be offering the contract extension right away! Scholesy should be the one worrying about this..

On the bright side, our two young loan signings have done very well in January. How I wish they were ours.. :(

December - February 2021/2022 - Middlesbrough F.C.

League

4cc5fa74560c4fa8fa883fcdd7545174.png

We continue to sit 13th in the table and I'm glad to say that we've already surpassed our points total last campaign with ten league games to go :D

FA Cup

42862e902d40a5824043944ed10d23fe.png

We were solid in the home tie but two screamers knocked us out of the FA Cup at the St. Mary's Stadium :(

Once again, Wesley has been my best performing player and he is slowly but surely repaying the big bucks we paid for him. He was the only upgrade in our back four this season but we are looking so much better defensively. That says a lot about his performances thus far and he's well on his way to bag our player of the season \o/

Season Review 2021/2022 - Middlesbrough F.C.

League

7ed5152f926b7d045ce27e27ccb95145.png

We finished on 46 points in 11th place, 14 points better off than last campaign's points total and 5 places higher up the table. All in all, it has been a really productive season for Scholesy with incredible progress \o/

Carabao Cup

29bf74fcf90025f4f270f1597a93fc18.png

We were really unlucky as we went a man down while winning 2-1. Huddersfield took advantage and equalized and we lost on penalties eventually :(

FA Cup

072a35a41c8a2c679c9b517fbd4b15f4.png

We were toothless in attack and Southampton scored a couple of screamers in the cup replay to knock us out in the 3rd round.

Top 11

9c3a79f6757db309e974a348eaead4ec.png

We certainly have more players of Premier League quality now and the aim is to keep improving that quality and progress up the table year by year.

Top 3 Players

a12284a68dbe50b7319c1c68afecef37.png

Paul continued to show his consistency this campaign and he rarely put a foot wrong playing at left-back for majority of the season. Unfortunately, he's turning 31 soon and it's unlikely that we will keep him in the squad next campaign. Two solid seasons from a 6 million pounds signing, I'll take that!

9cdbb8ed7ac9f476322c65754a78b902.png

Alphonso 'Bale' Davies has 7 goals and 3 assists in 36 starts and that's decent considering the fact that we have been playing very conservatively to maximize our points total. He tracks back well and drives the team forward when we are under pressure. Certainly the best loan deal we've done so far!

bff771dbb44058fba5741b3dbe701376.png

Wesley has been a rock for us at the back and even managed to knock in 2 crucial goals at the other end. He has certainly paid a huge chunk of the 28 million pounds we've paid for him last summer and the Dutch center-back is by some distance Scholesy's player of the season \o/

Great Season, now you that you survived that cursed second season, onto high flies?

Cheers,
Bitner

We will aim for a better points total and progress higher up the table! I'm finding it hard to attract players of better quality without European football though :(

Summer Transfers 2022/2023

1743d86e36293c16caeeceee8fb748b8.png

We struggled to improve the quality of our squad this summer as players of higher quality were simply not interested to join us with no European football. As a result, the transfers were made to plug the holes left behind by the departures.

Key Signings

Enis Bardhi

e66ba74a68dff776bc593aeba02b91f8.png

Enis isn't considerably better than the attacking midfielders we have at the club but I'm hopeful that his set-piece prowess will increase our goal tally in the upcoming campaign.

Leonardo Godoy

c4b993b798f2139a5ed069bb16822ea0.png

Our right-back position is clearly the weakest link in our defense and I'm hopeful that Godoy can prove to be a slight upgrade and further tighten our defense this season.

Ross McCrorie

bf0011fcb22947f256adac55395d1353.png

We had to sign Ross after our first-choice midfield anchor, Thiago Maia, has had his head turned by a Juventus loan bid. Thiago put in a transfer request and we had no choice but to try to offload him to the Italian giants. The deal is still pending contract agreement but we can't risk going into the season without a replacement and Ross was brought in for an inflated fee of 20 million pounds :(

I like McCrorie. Tidy GB signing!

I thought Maia would still be our midfield anchor when we eventually move into the next level :( McCrorie certainly doesn't look too bad.. let's hope this turns out to be a blessing in disguise!

July - August 2022/2023 - Middlesbrough F.C.

League

466fbdef3d42399bac0de263b59b330e.png

We sit in 10th after 7 games, two places above the media's prediction of a 12th place finish. The lads haven't been doing too badly and our two defeats were against Arsenal away and Man United at home.

Carabao Cup

f3730fb16e1ad70ceec1f0fc6b2250f0.png

Scholesy made the decision to play his second 11 and that backfired badly as we were knocked out in the second round. We didn't do too badly though as we had 60% possession, 27 shots and 13 were on target. The winning goal was from a direct free-kick :(

Top Player

931ed369913ffe383760af6bb3a2dc02.png

This is getting boring but Wesley was clearly the best performer of the opening two months of our campaign again. We kept 4 clean sheets out of 7 and the Dutch defender was a calming influence at the back. Long may that continue! \o/

Regen in Focus

Spencer English

0e486a289717540c6b9df91d83c1d33f.png

Spencer was brought in from Charlton when he was only 16 and that happened before Scholesy took charge at Boro. The fleet-footed winger scored on his debut while we were still in the Championship and has developed steadily since then. His breakthrough came last campaign when he made 28 first-team appearances across all competitions.

b823257c784b9029cb62596676865c76.gif

Scholesy was delighted to see Spencer add end product to his game this season as he rescued a point for us in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Bournemouth.

641f55e3e25ebd77e8bfeb18be9227c0.gif

His most notable recent contribution came in the FA Cup 3rd round when he pounced on a rebound from Wilson's free-kick to send us through to the next round.  I'm really excited to see how his career progress at Boro \o/

September - January 2022/2023 - Middlesbrough F.C.

League

7dd046e06332b18b02aee1a9a8239b7a.png

We are sitting in 9th position with 30 points after 21 games and all is well as Scholesy is still over-achieving \o/

FA Cup

d705c1eec4715bb92c703f7d66989602.png

Certainly our best cup run so far! We knocked Burnley out after a hard-fought 1-0 win when Spencer English bagged an extra time winner. Man United dominated proceedings in our next cup tie but the lads hung on and kept their composure to win on penalties at the end. Long may the cup run continue!

Top Player

Harry Wilson has been absolutely superb for us off the bench in the last couple of months and the midfield technician has bagged 3 goals and 2 assists thus far this campaign. It's a pity that he has agreed to a permanent transfer to Villarreal in the upcoming summer as all of us at the club want to see the loanee stay :(

Season Review 2022/2023 - Middlesbrough F.C.

League

6991a9fbb0603275a4e7d421152706cd.png

We finished on the same points total as last season in 13th place after an injury-filled campaign. Dael Fry only managed 17 league appearances this time round and as a result, we became more vulnerable in defense (especially at set-pieces). Our strikers also struggled for consistency and we ended the campaign with all three of them suffering from goal droughts. These factors prevented us from finishing higher up in the table.

Carabao Cup

2a5a61163a6e7feab9efe95841b73036.png

Scholesy took full responsibility for the early cup exit as he chose to field a second choice 11 in our 2nd round cup tie with Charlton. We were unable to find the net despite having 27 shots and 13 were on target.

FA Cup

023015856fd22ec8b77cf8585843d920.png

We finally had a decent cup run and the boys did exceptionally well to overcome Man United and a couple of other decent Premier League sides. We eventually came undone in the quarter-finals after conceding a late winner from a corner kick against Everton.

Top 11

8206ee16ef361432ae7bccf99efa0d86.png

Our season was very much disrupted by injuries to key players as our number one Pontus Dahlberg and first-choice center-back Dael Fry only managed 22 and 15 Premier League starts respectively.

Top 3 Players

5c08594c09605d6b2ba3adce92a0bf8e.png

Wesley continued to impress and finds himself in my top 3 players of the season yet again after another decent season defensively. He could have been my player of the season again if he avoided a dip in form towards the end of the campaign.

ce1fa24f7336e37385d8a77e8dbb8377.png

Wilson had been terrific for us off the bench and rightfully takes his place in my top 3 players of the season. We are all disappointed to find out that he will no longer be with us next campaign as he has agreed on a permanent transfer to Villarreal :(

0bcef01f97cd536539c1facf0cd2cf31.png

The Ukrainian came in to replace Dummett at left-back this campaign and we did not notice any drop in standards in that position. He is equally capable offensively and even managed 1 goal and 4 assists in a very defensive team. Mykola Matvienko is Scholesy's player of the season! \o/

Summer Transfers 2023/2024

69d83141119928a18764fd93ff8080ea.png

It's the same old story as players of higher quality weren't interested to join us with no European football. 6 players were brought in to plug the gaps left behind by the departures.

Key Signings

Patrick Roberts

d4577357f8a4948faa8c4a331128173f.png

Patrick was brought in to replace the outgoing Atsu and Wilson and Scholesy is hopeful that the Englishman's incredible agility and ability to take on a man can help to replace the quality and pace of the departing players.

Ferland Mendy

17d9d5e2998c400be6d6fd8fe079b635.png

We continued to raid Bournemouth for full-backs and Ferland was signed to replace the outgoing and ageing Paul Dummett. The Frenchman is worse defensively than Paul but he's quicker and slightly better offensively. He will challenge the excellent Matvienko for the first choice left-back spot.

Aleksandar Mitrovic

fa55ecb6030daf3b35a51445cb6e49d0.png

Our strikers clearly aren't good enough and Aleksandar was the best we could find on the market. Despite being 28 this year, he was available for a mere 6.5 million pounds and this is an incredible bargain in today's market. Scholesy jumped onto the chance to bring him in and let's hope he can add more goals to our game \o/

Yes, more goals, unshackle the boys and let them play ball! ;)

I don't think we are ready yet to be honest! If we keep our conservative style, we can stay clear of the relegation zone and finish somewhere mid-table. There's a possibility that we may end up in a relegation fight if we leave space at the back!
