New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Firstly, the johnlewis one is incredibly ill equipped for FM .. I doubt you would be able to play at all.. stay away from that one.

The second link is actually a very very good spec'd laptop, it would breeze through FM, the only thing it lacks is a dedicated graphics card which really isn't needed for fm anyway.

The one Luke got is easily the best of the lot and if you can push the extra 100 .. it's more than worth it... not needed for fm in particular, but the extra features are superb (dedicated gfx, ssd boot) .. it really is overkill though.

Hi guys.

How does a 2015 MacBook pro 15-inch handle the 3D match engine? Looking to purchase one after the release of the 16.3 patch. I currently own a HP Pavilion dv6-3108ea which simply isn't up to scratch any more.

MacBook specs:

2.2 Ghz quad-core

Intel Core i7 processor

16GB RAM

256 GB storage

Intel Iris Pro Graphics

Is there any need to get the 512GB version, with additional AMD Radeon R9 M370X graphics instead?

I'm running the MBP 2.8Ghz, 16GB RAM with AMD Radeon graphics, it's absolutely brilliant.

I've got 26 leagues, 99K players with the graphics in the 3D engine full up. The MBP is a great laptop for FM16.

Hi guys,

Looking for a new laptop (stupid comment really as I'm on this thread) anyway mainly want it for FM and then a bit of video and photo storage for the family. Have found this one at JL but am no good at specs or anything and as it's mainly for FM just wondered how it would play? I'm not a big database player mainly UK leagues uploaded possibly with one other European country too!

Hi guys,

I was wondering if you could advise me in the choice of my new laptop. I have put three links below to computers which are at the max or around my budget. Which one would you recommend whether it be for playing FM 2016 or in general ? By the way, I live in France, so for the first computer I was able to dig out a page in English but the second and third ones are in French. However, the basic information should be easy to pick out for those in the know ! The price of the second one is about £40 more than the first whereas the third one is £40 cheaper than the first. Thank you for helping and feel free to ask for any translation needed for the second and third links.

As you may have guessed I am looking at John Lewis as its good service and I get a discount there.

Thanks

The Dell is probably your best bet.. cheaper, capable and covered with good servicing and guarantees etc.

The specs look decent too for fm... of course there are cheaper places to buy from but if you like those, the dell wins imo

The trouble is that living in France I guess it would be easier to buy from a French site perhaps. However, if you have any ideas for "cheaper places" then I am all ears ! Thank you for the reply by the way.

It should be ok, because requirements are Pentium IV 1,8ghz single core processor, but he asked about i5 dual core + multi threading 1,3ghz processor - so it should run, tho how well that is a different question...

No - it's below min spec. Regardless if it's 1 core or 10 core.

I wouldn't count on it being good.

That 3.2ghz is misleading as that's it's top speed.

It's base frequency is 1.8ghz and it can overclock to 3.2ghz if it's cool. But generally the processor gets hot when playing FM so I doubt you'll ever see a great speed out of it.

Therefore, I'd recommend playing small amount of nations/leagues with a small database.

The graphics card is integrated, it's not a standalone graphics card, therefore, for 3d matches I'd keep it on a low detail setting.

This one is better for FM http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/refurbished-grade-a1-hp-pavilion-15-p189sa-core-i5-8gb-750gb-15.6-inch-dvds-a1-k7q14ea-w8/version.asp

Again - the graphics card isn't great - so 3d matches on low detail.

Thanks for the earlier feedback, I'm still trying to find something a bit cheaper than Luke's Dell and have come up with these:

Lenovo G50-80

Intel Core i7-5500U 2.4GHz/3.0 GHz Processor

8GB RAM, 1TB HDD

15.6" (1366 x 768) Resolution

£600

Lenovo U31 Laptop

Intel Core i7,

8GB RAM,

128GB,

13.3 screen

£500

Once more, views from FM'ers appreciated. Thanks

Both overpriced there Rob..

For that sort of budget, you should probably look at something you can customize like on pcspecialist.. well worth it for that sort of budget.

You can build a laptop on there that's pretty much on par with Luke's Dell for close to £100 cheaper (obviously missing a few things, but nothing you'd seriously miss tbh)

Thanks for your time again Welshace.

I’m actually moving away from a PC Specialist laptop. It delivered processor speed etc but ultimately some decent functionality was wasted on a cheap chassis and I received no break-fix support after what was only a couple of months outside of warrantee. I was left with the impression that it was assembled a bit like Frankenstein’s monster and personally I won’t go that route again. Just my experience on that one.

Looking for some build quality and reliability (don’t want it to overheat itself to death basically) alongside performance and don’t mind slightly overpaying for that within the limit I’ve set myself. PC Specialist aside I am open to feedback / recommendations.

Why would you receive support, you were outside of warranty - they couldn't help you and I'm sure they wanted to. Anyway - that's the first time I've ever heard anything negative about PC Specialist.

If you're looking for build quality and reliability then I wouldn't recommend buying from Tesco or John Lewis (basically off the shelf models).

You could try here - they do custom builds also

That's a shame Rob, I use them on pretty much a weekly basis and barring a few niggles, have found them easily the best suppliers for my needs.

That said, perhaps you might go straight to the source and check out Dell themselves?

Hello,

I would like to ask you if FM16 will work with the new Mac Book 12 retina, I don't need to play with 3d full details, just play even with low 3d details.

This are the tech specs:

256GB PCIe-based onboard flash storage11.1GHz dual-core

Intel Core M processor

Turbo Boost up to 2.4GHz

8GB memory

Intel HD Graphics 5300

Thanks and sorry if was just asked.

It will likely struggle with all but the smallest save game due to the low end cpu.

If you already have that machine the best bet is to try the demo & see how you get on.

Cheers. I liked that and have ordered it. I got it down another £30 and it includes 12-month subscription to McAfee Security. £569 all-in.

Arrives by the weekend. I will feedback for others if it's as good as it sounds.

Ram has no bearing on load times as Smurf has mentioned...

If you have an ssd is steam loading from it etc?

Yes is loading from it.

I wanted to speed up with the less expense but now i think i have the faster speed i can with my processor...

Thank you

Again, we can't suggest how many leagues and players as it's all subjective to each person..

You could load every player and league in the game and play, but it's whether the speed is enough for you or not..

That processor is the low end of the mid range really, on par with some fifth gen 15's I guess, so it will run fm perfectly fine.

If anyone is after a fairly cheap 13'3 notebook sized laptop for playing FM on ..

Saw this for someone the other day...

http://www.johnlewis.com/lenovo-u31-laptop-intel-core-i7-8gb-ram-128gb-13-3-/p2295701?colour=White&s_afcid=af_47868&awc=1203_1452776718_6d526aee0106130202edc4108e344993

That's a very good find - compared to this one http://www.johnlewis.com/asus-x555la-laptop-intel-core-i7-8gb-ram-1tb-15-6-black/p2307189

Similar price but a larger screen. However, you'd expect to get the same as the one you posted - but you don't.

In my larger laptop example, there's no graphics card.

It's a just a word of warning, just because two computers are the same price doesn't mean that they will perform the same.

Where in the world are you? What country? Where do you usually buy online? I can take a look for you.

I dont and cant buy in online at the moment.. im buying at local stores so I can only list the ones I found in my budget

1. Dell Inspiron 15 3000

2.2 GHz Intel Core i5 5200U

8GB Ram

500GB Hard Disk

Nvidia GT820M

2. Lenovo G50 I posted earlier

Intel Core i5-5200U 2.20GHz

4GB RAM

1TB 5400 RPM

Intel HD Graphics 5500

3. Toshiba Satellite C55

1.7 GHz Intel Core i5 4210U

4GB Ram

500GB Hard Disk

Radeon R5 M230

They all have 15.6 inch screen with 1366x768 resolution..

So other than the Lenovo, I think I will go for the Dell.. Same processor but has 8GB ram while Lenovo only 4GB and also the Dell features Nvidia graphics which is not that great but better than HD 5500.. I don't mind with HDD capacity.

ALL computers can run every single league and every single player in a max database.

It just depends how efficient the processor is to how fast the game will operate.

That's very good laptop and you'll enjoy quite a few leagues with a large database, no problem at all.

Again.. handle is subjective, there aren't many laptops out there that can play the game with full league and detail for too long at any respectable speed (in my own opinion) ..

There aren't many laptops out there with better specs than that though puffa..

Thanks, I guess I'll play around with it to see at what point it starts to slow down. Tbh though I've been playing a ton of leagues on my 6 yr. old laptop and while it's extremely slow I'm pretty used to it. If it takes half the time to process as it does for me now I'll be thrilled.

Hi there, hopefully you can help me, I am looking for a new desktop PC, currently only have a laptop so would need monitor and keyboard/mouse and operating system in the price too. I have a budget of up to 600 or so maximum. At the moment I have a laptop and I am happy how that runs FM but I know on a desktop you get more bang for your buck so to speak and want something that will last me a good number of years. Was thinking 8-16GB of RAM and a quad core processor if possible. I have been playing about on dabs, pcspecialist etc. however my issue is in terms of motherboard, graphics etc it is all jargon to me so any pointing in the right direction would be great..I have tailored a couple of the questions from a few pages ago to my own post below.

Amount of a leagues/clubs - Generally England down to conference north/south, serie a, liga bbva, bundesliga and ligue 1

Are 3d graphics important? - only use 3d for replays at the moment, prefer the 2D

What other tasks do you do when playing FM? - youtube, facebook, general browsing,

Is game speed essential? I want the game to run fast as possible with processing, current laptop runs fast and it is a couple of years old

Fast load and save times? preferably

Thanks for any help

You're not wrong Rob... my mistake for not making it clearer..

For a 13'3 sized model, the spec is great for the price... you rarely see that sort of spec in a notebook sized model so small for that sort of price.

However, for someone who is looking for the more standard 15'6 sized model or not 13'3 in particular, you could, and should do a lot better, as demonstrated by the Dell I linked..

The issue with the lenovo is clear... smaller screen, much less space on the HDD (or in this case a ssd), less ram.

When someone gives a budget, I tend to obviously look towards the top end and the best they can get for that price and within their specs.

Quite similar to mine, but with a even stronger processor. The 6700K is of course a "desktop" Core i7 processor. My guess is that it is a Clevo (based) laptop you're looking at. Mine has the "regular" 6700HQ laptop processor, and I play all default leagues (as "playable"), and using a "advanced" database - size at start of the game is approx. 180k players. And I'm satisfied with the resulting speed of the game's progress. And if it is a laptop from the same manufacturer as mine (ie Clevo), it will run FM for hours on end without the slightest hint of stress. It deals with the heat quite superbly, and as long as your game and your saves are on the SSD, you will hardly ever notice the dreaded slowdown as the seasons go by.

With the desktop processor in that laptop, you can expect even better performance than mine, but higher internal temperatures (in the processor particularly), much higher power consumption, and it will probably be a bit more noisy too. As well as considerably higher weight and bigger bulk, of course. Which is exactly why I didn't go for that particular model, but decided on something much smaller, lighter, and slimmer this time around. But I have owned one of Clevo's beasts with a "desktop" processor in it before, and it was just like having a powerful but portable desktop computer. (Mine served me well without problems for 7 years).

And as a bonus, with the GTX 970M you are also able to play every game in existence at 1920x1080 resolution without problems. Most will play with maxed out graphics settings, with a handfull of games you'll need to moderate your settings slightly. A demanding game as The Witcher 3 for example, will play fine with one or two slight moderations from maxed out.

Thanks for the comparison. I actually went ahead and bought this laptop. Was very much an impulse buy, but I've been dealing with a crappy 2008 laptop for far too long and I wanted something high end. It's actually from Digital Storm who from everything I've read seem like a great company. Service is quick and helpful, they have a huge forum with lightning responses and the prices are very competitive.

Didn't even realize that the processor is a desktop model. I could see where that will give off more heat and be a bit louder. From what I've read though the laptop is supposed to have great ventilation and people have said the fan noise isn't too bad. I got it to play more than just FM of course, but that's what I'm really excited about. It will be night and day for me to see the game fly along. I might start with the bulk of leagues loaded and then gradually add all of them and see how it does.

Ah, yes - if it's from Digital Storm it's very likely a Clevo. Clevo's are only sold this way, via vendors that brand them with their own brand name. It'a probably a Clevo P771DM that you have bought, a successor to my old Clevo.

No, it shouldn't have any problems dealing with the heat, but the processor will get pretty toasty when doing heavy duty work - 90c+ is not uncommon during stress testing. Nothing to worry about though, the cooling system is also heavy duty. But you should take care to get rid of the dust accumulating internally, at regular intervals. When i had my Clevo beast, I opened it and cleaned it out twice a year. Get a program like HWInfo64 to monitor the temps.

Thanks again. I plan on regularly cleaning it. Will also get a program like you mentioned to monitor it. I plan on using it for a good 5 yrs. if not longer.

Would these HP Pavillions be ok for running 5/6 leagues with a large DB? They're on sale for £399 and I'm tempted, if that's a decent offer.
