Firstly, the johnlewis one is incredibly ill equipped for FM .. I doubt you would be able to play at all.. stay away from that one.

The second link is actually a very very good spec'd laptop, it would breeze through FM, the only thing it lacks is a dedicated graphics card which really isn't needed for fm anyway.

The one Luke got is easily the best of the lot and if you can push the extra 100 .. it's more than worth it... not needed for fm in particular, but the extra features are superb (dedicated gfx, ssd boot) .. it really is overkill though.

The Dell is probably your best bet.. cheaper, capable and covered with good servicing and guarantees etc.

The specs look decent too for fm... of course there are cheaper places to buy from but if you like those, the dell wins imo

I wouldn't count on it being good.

That 3.2ghz is misleading as that's it's top speed.

It's base frequency is 1.8ghz and it can overclock to 3.2ghz if it's cool. But generally the processor gets hot when playing FM so I doubt you'll ever see a great speed out of it.

Therefore, I'd recommend playing small amount of nations/leagues with a small database.

The graphics card is integrated, it's not a standalone graphics card, therefore, for 3d matches I'd keep it on a low detail setting.

For that sort of budget, you should probably look at something you can customize like on pcspecialist.. well worth it for that sort of budget.

You can build a laptop on there that's pretty much on par with Luke's Dell for close to £100 cheaper (obviously missing a few things, but nothing you'd seriously miss tbh)

I’m actually moving away from a PC Specialist laptop. It delivered processor speed etc but ultimately some decent functionality was wasted on a cheap chassis and I received no break-fix support after what was only a couple of months outside of warrantee. I was left with the impression that it was assembled a bit like Frankenstein’s monster and personally I won’t go that route again. Just my experience on that one.

Looking for some build quality and reliability (don’t want it to overheat itself to death basically) alongside performance and don’t mind slightly overpaying for that within the limit I’ve set myself. PC Specialist aside I am open to feedback / recommendations.

Why would you receive support, you were outside of warranty - they couldn't help you and I'm sure they wanted to. Anyway - that's the first time I've ever heard anything negative about PC Specialist.

If you're looking for build quality and reliability then I wouldn't recommend buying from Tesco or John Lewis (basically off the shelf models).

It will likely struggle with all but the smallest save game due to the low end cpu.

If you already have that machine the best bet is to try the demo & see how you get on.

So obviously I know the game will run like cake but I am curious how good it will run processing and number of players/leagues wise. I am getting something with:

Again, we can't suggest how many leagues and players as it's all subjective to each person..

You could load every player and league in the game and play, but it's whether the speed is enough for you or not..

That processor is the low end of the mid range really, on par with some fifth gen 15's I guess, so it will run fm perfectly fine.

ALL computers can run every single league and every single player in a max database.

It just depends how efficient the processor is to how fast the game will operate.

That's very good laptop and you'll enjoy quite a few leagues with a large database, no problem at all.

Hi there, hopefully you can help me, I am looking for a new desktop PC, currently only have a laptop so would need monitor and keyboard/mouse and operating system in the price too. I have a budget of up to 600 or so maximum. At the moment I have a laptop and I am happy how that runs FM but I know on a desktop you get more bang for your buck so to speak and want something that will last me a good number of years. Was thinking 8-16GB of RAM and a quad core processor if possible. I have been playing about on dabs, pcspecialist etc. however my issue is in terms of motherboard, graphics etc it is all jargon to me so any pointing in the right direction would be great..I have tailored a couple of the questions from a few pages ago to my own post below.

Is game speed essential? I want the game to run fast as possible with processing, current laptop runs fast and it is a couple of years old

You're not wrong Rob... my mistake for not making it clearer..

For a 13'3 sized model, the spec is great for the price... you rarely see that sort of spec in a notebook sized model so small for that sort of price.

However, for someone who is looking for the more standard 15'6 sized model or not 13'3 in particular, you could, and should do a lot better, as demonstrated by the Dell I linked..

The issue with the lenovo is clear... smaller screen, much less space on the HDD (or in this case a ssd), less ram.

When someone gives a budget, I tend to obviously look towards the top end and the best they can get for that price and within their specs.

Mine has the "regular" 6700HQ laptop processor, and I play all default leagues (as "playable"), and using a "advanced" database - size at start of the game is approx. 180k players. And I'm satisfied with the resulting speed of the game's progress. And if it is a laptop from the same manufacturer as mine (ie Clevo), it will run FM for hours on end without the slightest hint of stress. It deals with the heat quite superbly, and as long as your game and your saves are on the SSD, you will hardly ever notice the dreaded slowdown as the seasons go by.

With the desktop processor in that laptop, you can expect even better performance than mine, but higher internal temperatures (in the processor particularly), much higher power consumption, and it will probably be a bit more noisy too. As well as considerably higher weight and bigger bulk, of course. Which is exactly why I didn't go for that particular model, but decided on something much smaller, lighter, and slimmer this time around. But I have owned one of Clevo's beasts with a "desktop" processor in it before, and it was just like having a powerful but portable desktop computer. (Mine served me well without problems for 7 years).

And as a bonus, with the GTX 970M you are also able to play every game in existence at 1920x1080 resolution without problems. Most will play with maxed out graphics settings, with a handfull of games you'll need to moderate your settings slightly. A demanding game as The Witcher 3 for example, will play fine with one or two slight moderations from maxed out.

Don't forget - we're trying to get you the best value for your money - you're originally looking for a custom build - and we're trying to steer you that direction.

Each person has different requirements, we're only doing our best to meet your specific requirements.

Of course it's a grand laptop, but if you're looking for something a little more custom and bespoke, then I wouldn't recommend it.

Was very much an impulse buy, but I've been dealing with a crappy 2008 laptop for far too long and I wanted something high end. It's actually from Digital Storm who from everything I've read seem like a great company. Service is quick and helpful, they have a huge forum with lightning responses and the prices are very competitive.

Didn't even realize that the processor is a desktop model. I could see where that will give off more heat and be a bit louder. From what I've read though the laptop is supposed to have great ventilation and people have said the fan noise isn't too bad. I got it to play more than just FM of course, but that's what I'm really excited about. It will be night and day for me to see the game fly along. I might start with the bulk of leagues loaded and then gradually add all of them and see how it does.

Ah, yes - if it's from Digital Storm it's very likely a Clevo. Clevo's are only sold this way, via vendors that brand them with their own brand name. It'a probably a Clevo P771DM that you have bought, a successor to my old Clevo.

No, it shouldn't have any problems dealing with the heat, but the processor will get pretty toasty when doing heavy duty work - 90c+ is not uncommon during stress testing. Nothing to worry about though, the cooling system is also heavy duty. But you should take care to get rid of the dust accumulating internally, at regular intervals. When i had my Clevo beast, I opened it and cleaned it out twice a year. Get a program like HWInfo64 to monitor the temps.

Thanks again. I plan on regularly cleaning it. Will also get a program like you mentioned to monitor it. I plan on using it for a good 5 yrs. if not longer.

Would these HP Pavillions be ok for running 5/6 leagues with a large DB? They're on sale for £399 and I'm tempted, if that's a decent offer.
