MarchColorDrink
Does anyone have recommendations for a "convertible laptop" (ie one that can be used as a tablet). I'm looking for something with a 10 inch screen and on a budget of say £250. Don't mind running on lowest graphics. Most of the laptops I've been looking at have the atom processor. Is it capable enough?

FM needs the full Windows 10 or MacOS in order to run at all. Android or other phone/tablet OS's won't do.
Welshace
I'd stay away from the Atom based laptops.. they really are underpowered... You'll need to go to £400 to get a half decent convertible laptop for gaming really imo

Decided to test and it does run full fat FM 2016. Graphics on lowest end and a bit slow. Only tested with one nation loaded (EPL-vanarama).
Welshace
This is why it's been mentioned several times on every page in this thread that it's all relative tbh... Fm will load up on most systems and you can click through the first few days fine... after that, your system above for instance, with no ram and very underpowered cpu will soon grind to a holt .. FM performance is all about speed, and each user will have a different opinion on what they count as playable One of the laptops I play on for instance, is an old old generation i5 bought 6 or so years ago, and for me, it runs fm at a perfectly acceptable speed. I doubt everyone would feel the same.
MarchColorDrink
Of course it is not optimal and I even said it was slow. Im stil looking for a better alternative. My post was mostly to prove to thomit that despite his concerns it is possible.
thomit
I strongly disagree. There are quite a few options even around £150 that come with a full os. Example http://www.laptopoutlet.co.uk/linx-1010b-10-1-touchscreen-window-tablet-quad-core-atom-z3735f-2gb-ram-32gb-sd.html Of course you can find cheap stuff. I bet you can find - if you look even harder - tablets or convertibles for 99 pounds. But none of them are machines I would be willing to recommend to anyone. Poor quality screens, really inadeqate hardware ... and generally poor build quality. That's what you get. But if they have got the "full" Win 10, they will run FM. Poorly. So if you want one of those, by all means buy one. Just don't ask me - or anyone, really - to recommend one of them.
Smurf
Yeh I didn't even bother recommending one and I looked for you. There was no point as there's nothing adequate out there in that price range. My advice would be to be save and get something of better quality.
MarchColorDrink
I did ask for a recommendation. Instead of saying that you would not recommend any computer fitting my description you, more or less, stated that it would be impossible to find one. Two very different statements. Smurf
Six of one, half a dozen of another. Why do you think people would waste their free time looking for something for you that you're not even sincere about. The people on these forums do an amazing job helping people out every single day, and they don't have to. But they do it. And you're here nitpicking and basically trolling the thread... and for what? craiigman
Has anyone played FM on the new version of the 12" Macbook? Any idea if it runs well on it? I have the 2016 12" MacBook with a 1.3 GHz M7 chip. I've not put too much time into FM on it, but it can manage it. I wouldn't advise too many leagues loaded if you want to play the full version though. It does get very warm, but didn't seem to slow down from thermal throttling, so it's not too warm. Also I didn't try 3D, I only use 2D classic. Welshace
What do we all think of the HP Envy 13, i7-6500U variant? Get the feeling theres better out there for the price. Depends what price you've seen it at? I've always preferred the Xps range from Dell .. But as I say, it depends on your needs and budget... Taken on it's own merit though.. HP's have improved a lot over the years, they tend to have better than average battery life and great screens too.. Although I have to admit, I've never had the pleasure of trying one myself, because as previously mentioned, I will always go for an XPS or say, an ASUS or Lenovo in the 13 inch catagory if I want cheaper than an XPS. LukaKranjcar
£700 iirc Smart little machine, want to make sure it will play FM16 comfortably, i know its not a gaming rig, I have my desktop for that anyway. Just making sure its not £700 ish better spent elsewhere.
Welshace
If you are after a 13 inch specifically, there aren't any out there that I have seen with a better cpu at that price... and fm is all about the cpu. And it will play fm perfectly fine
Frosteeeh!!!
Hello Would this be ok for me - http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/P5S40ESABU-HP-ProBook-450-G2_1884970.html Budget is £450, other suggestions? Ideally would like it from this site so I can pay over 5 months - Not played FM since FM 13 as laptop not good enough. I would like it for this FM and decent enough it will play the next FM. I only play with England only, medium database at least and I usually play my save for a good few seasons. I skype a lot so would need a webcam and mic and the only other thing I would use it for is general internet browsing. Thanks for any help

Thanks for any help Not bad at all.. but sticking with your budget.. try this: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/NX.MVHEK.106-Acer-Aspire-E5-573_1837792.html Cpu is better, which is everything for FM... the only drawback is the ram, but frankly, you can double it for another £30-£40 when you have the cash.. If you want to stretch the budget a little... consider: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/20EV0010UK-Lenovo-ThinkPad-Edge-E560_1857763.html Great cpu, plus the added bonus of a decent HDD Or a really budget busting suggestion: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/80LM000QUK-Lenovo-B51-80_1857774.html Great cpu, dedicated graphics card, good amount of ram

Ronaldo Beckham
Hiya anyone know of any good i7 processor laptops, the only game I play on is football manager so don't need the best graphics, just want to play with a good player database and run quick, I have seen an i7 laptop with 12gb ram and 2tb hard drive for 600 quid, here is a link to it, let me know what you think or if you can find better please, http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/asus-x555ua-15-6-laptop-black-10137771-pdt.html
Welshace
Your link isn't working for me at the moment, so can't see the spec... there are many i7 cpu's ... is there any specific reason you want an i7 over say an i5 or an AMD? And is £600 your budget? Edit: NVM .. can see from the text in your link that its the asus-x555ua ... What I will say about it, is that they have compromised a lot on build quality to give you that price... The i7-6500u it comes with is great and all, and the 12 gb ram is nice, if not way overly excessive imo But besides that, you get very little. The case is cheap plastic, the speakers are awful sounding, the screen isn't great. BUT if you aren't too bothered about that stuff.. it's not bad.. Here's a few alternatives to look at: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/80R6001HUK-Lenovo-Yoga-500-in-White_1912191.html Same cpu, better build quality, dedicated graphics card.. http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/80LM000QUK-Lenovo-B51-80_1857774.html Same cpu, cheaper, better quality, dedicated card (although not superb card) http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/30020523-Medion-Akoya-P6659_1885564.html Cheap brand, not best build quality, but better specs and dedicated card. http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/30020524-Medion-Akoya-P6659_1885565.html Notably cheaper.. and cpu isn't far behind really.. Wildcard: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/30020522-Medion-Erazer-P6661_1934830.html If spec is all you care about , and build quality of the housing is not... the above is something to look at... The screen is actually good quality, and the spec is superb.. it's only really the plastic casing that lets it down a little.
Ronaldo Beckham
Yeah cheers for the help Welshace, you know your stuff, I basically want a better laptop that I have now, the laptop I have at the moment is a Sony Vaio laptop, the model number is VPCF22CSE, specs are 8gb ram, Intel Core I7-2630QM 2.00 GHZ processor, I got a budget of 500-600 quid, the cheaper the better but obviously want the best I can get, also is it possible to take my RAM out of my current laptop and put in the new laptop to boost the RAM up ?
Welshace
Hey, sorry I didn't get back to you till now. Regarding the ram... it's very unlikely your old laptop and the new one will use the same DDR class of ram so can't be used together.. even if they could, mixing and matching old and new ram is never great.. the old ram can bottleneck performance. Now we know your needs, I still can't recommend the Cosmos IV enough to people looking for a sub £600 laptop: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/reviews/ Click on that link and scroll down to the Cosmos IV at £599 ... it's amazing, and don't be put off by the i5, it will outshine your old i7 by miles. I will say though, the new skylake i7's like the 6500u aren't far behind at all... so it's a toss up. I do love pcspecialist, so it narrowly takes it for me... especially if you are willing to pay that little extra for the i7 rather than the i5. Ronaldo Beckham
Are you able to find anything similar on saveonlaptops.com as their shop ain't far from me and I can go in tomorrow and buy it, no worries if you can't as I know you are probably a busy man, I appreciate your advice, also why would an i5 laptop outperform and i7 as I I always assumed i7 were the best processors. Ronaldo Beckham
Cheers guys I appreciate your help, welshace is there much difference in performance of the 549 quid one and the 699 quids laptops, if I bought the 549 quid laptop can I add more ram afterwards and get an ssd drive after as well.
Welshace
As far as the cpu's are concerned, there is marginal difference in performance between the two listed in the laptops in the 4 above I posted.. with the 6500u just taking it. Really what you are paying for is the other things coming with it... so: Ram: anything 8gb or above is perfect.. and for fm, anything above is pretty much unneeded unless you plan to multitask a lot while playing. Graphics card: anything dedicated will play fm perfectly fine tbh HDD: SSD's are great for everyday use, but won't affect fm much at all... Based on that.. you should be able to choose... Personally, I'd get this: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/80LM000QUK-Lenovo-B51-80_1857774.html Everything is decent, and it will do the job you want for fm great Unless you can spare the extra money to get this : http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/K501UB-DM021T-ASUS-K501UB-DM021T_1869973.html As the extra ram is handy, the SSD is great, the dedicated card is good and the build quality on asus' is more to my liking over the Lenovo.. By then again, i'd still stick to the pcspecialist one myself.
Ronaldo Beckham
What's the difference between the 549 quid laptop from saveonlaptops and the 599 quid laptop from pcspecialist please mate, last question I promise as I don't want to take anymore of your time and thanks for your help.
Welshace
For the extra £50 you get: Pcspecialist has the superior cpu in terms of raw power.. It has good quality ram , where as I couldn't tell you what the lenovo has. I much prefer geforce graphics cards over radeon, but that's just a preference, but i do believe the 940 is better than the radeon option. You get a great 128gb SSD, great stuff. You get great customer support and service from pcspecialist, including the full warranty and online support/forums. For £50, well worth it.

Ronaldo Beckham
Sorry one more question, it is about VAT, it says that it is 600 quid including VAT but 519 without VAT, do I have any choice in VAT or do I have to pay VAT, also they said on the phone that the laptop will take 5-6 days to put together the laptop. JamesCaddick
I wondered whether a laptop for <£300 could play FM to a decent standard? Smurf
4gb is adequate, and you can always add more when funds are available to you.. ram is a super cheap upgrade Hi Welshace Just wondering your thoughts on a 64 bit system that requires 2gb RAM to run, and FM requires 2gb RAM. I just feel it would be a bit slugish with this setup. What do you think?
Welshace
Yeah, with all things fm.. it's all relative when talking about speed... One of the laptops I play on myself is a fairly old gen i5 with 4gb ram... after a while it does feel sluggish to me, but it runs my 180k size database for quite a while tbh. But you are 100% right, it's not the ideal setup.. and its definitely not something i'd stick with, But you are essentially paying the extra £20 in this case for a vastly better cpu with adequate ram to play with until you can afford the £20 to double the ram.. It's a no brainer really.
Smurf
Ok, it was really for that reason I tend to head towards the 8gb and up for RAM. But you're right, it's cheap and simple to upgrade. I would recommend the OP upgrades the RAM sooner rather than later.
Guest
As it's easier to upgrade RAM than a CPU & with FM being all about cpu horsepower the option Welshace gave is the route that I'd also suggest if finances do not cover buying the best of both options. Guest
Those compromise choices can be difficult, probably explains why I've spent far more money than is really necessary on PCs/PC parts over the years & always run all league saves in FM. I hate the feeling that I'm missing out on something.
Welshace
That's tech for you.. particularly when it comes to computers. There's always something better out there for a great price from one day to the next, and it's hard as a consumer not to get into the trap of waiting and waiting and overthinking things.. Performance improvements are usually marginal things anyway.
