A proper gaming graphics card or higher ram (12 or 16gb, for example)? Graphics cards and RAM are always secondary to the cpu as far as FM is concerned... 8gb is more than enough ram to run the game efficiently, anything after is for multitasking while playing, any dedicated graphics card will run 3d on medium to high in my experience, and most onboard graphics chips run the 3d perfectly adequately these days too. But as far as the laptop you've selected goes.. it's good, if not amazing, probably there or there abouts for the price.
Alexander.penn21
Thanks buddy. I've read reviews where people have managed to play fallout 4 on it at reasonable speeds. Pretty incredible for the price.
Earnie is God!
http://www.qvcuk.com/HP-Pavilion-15.6-Laptop-with-B&O-PLAY-Win-10,-Core-i5-8GB-Ram-&-1TB-HDD.product.508148.html?cm_sp=VIEWPOSITION-_-7-_-508148 I had ordered that one last week. However, there was an issue with my order and it's been delayed. I've just spotted this new one they advertised yesterday for £400: http://www.qvcuk.com/Acer-15.6-Laptop-with-AMD-A9-9410-Processor-8GB-RAM%2C-1TB-HDD-128GB-SSD-%26-Case.product.508282.html It has a much faster processor (2.9GHz up to 3.5GHz) but I am less familiar with AMD and Radeon R5 graphics, so was wondering if it is as good a deal as it appears? It's their Special Value Deal which ends at midnight so if you or Welshace or anyone really could advise sometime today then that'd be great and if it's better than the other one then I'll switch to that one. Thanks EDIT: Looks like my original order is now in progress as they have taken the 1st instalment out of my bank account, although my order still says it is in process, like it has since I ordered it. Ah well. That 2nd one does look really good though. Never mind.
TMitC
It's all subjective really. What's cheap to me might not be cheap to you... what's a fast computer to me, might not be for you...Perhaps this would suit http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/K501UB-DM020T-ASUS-K501UB-DM020T_1845634.html Or perhaps this http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-178344-093-MSI-GT72S-6QF(Dominator-Pro-Dragon-4K)-0_1919344.html Thanks. I'm just confused about how I could buy a laptop that was good enough for £379.36 four years ago, but now I have to pay even more to get one. Isn't power meant to double while price halves every year? FYI, this was the laptop I bought in May 2012, which ran FM15 fine, with 3D and large database: Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-2JR Laptop, Intel Core i3 2350M 2.3GHz, 640GB HDD, 6GB RAM, 15.6" HD, DVDRW, Intel HD, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Surely I should now be able to buy something at least twice as powerful for at least half the price... Yeah I noticed that after I posted earlier. It's still within my budget (which is £500). I'm just not sure what would be best or the which processers etc are better than others. There should be a website just for FM where you put your budget it in and it goes straight to the best computers available lol

01binnie
cpu's are easy enough to compare.. literally just put two cpu model numbers into google and a whole host of comparison sites will come up. thomit
Oh no I know you can do that, but it's more about I don't know how well FM would run on them. Nobody knows how well FM would run on them - because nobody else but you know what you mean by "well". But it really is as easy as that, at least if we keep the 3D graphics out of the equation; Better (faster) processors will run FM better (faster). So buy the best processor you can within your budget. That's really the easy bit. It gets more complicated if you in addition to caring about FM performance also care about things like screen quality and resolution, general build quality and quality "feel", heat and noise, battery capacity, maybe you want to be able to play other games with more demanding graphics, et cetera et cetera. Then you need to allocate proportionally more of your budget onto these other things, and maybe settle for a slower processor to keep within budget. But really; if you have a list of processors ranged from fastest to slowest (it isn't quite that straighforward), then buy the computer that has the fastest of them, within your budget. That will be the best computer for FM, for you and your budget. I'm not familiar with the UK market, but I would have a guess at the Intel Core i5 6200U as the best processor (of the latest generation) you can get in a laptop for £500 or less. If not that, then the Core i3 6100U. The Dell you linked to has a Core i5 5200U of the previous generation, and it's not bad either, it's processor is among the best you can get within your budget, I would think. I'm assuming now that UK laptop prices are not wildly different from the rest of Europe. The U at the end of model numbers denote a ULV (ultra low voltage) processor, and next up in line we get into the "full blooded" Core laptop processors, like the Core i3 6300HQ, the Core i5 6500HQ, the Core i7 6700HQ etc. These operate at a higher voltage, with much higher power drain and heat emissions than the "U"'s, and quite frankly they offer considerably better performance as well. But you need not concern yourself with these, as I doubt you can get one of them in a laptop for £500 or less. But maybe I'm wrong, and you can. A list that puts processors in descending order of overall performance you can find here. This lists both desktop and laptop processors, but you can switch to "show only notebook processors" and then click "restrict" to list only mobile (laptop) processors. Earnie is God!
Oh no I know you can do that, but it's more about I don't know how well FM would run on them. Try this site: http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/index.php?gid=1977&graphics=GeForce%20830M%202GB I've already chosen the graphics card that Dell laptop you mention above has. You'll have to input the rest of it for the test as that doesn't get updated with the link so scroll down a bit and input: i5-5200u....where it says select CPU and then choose the top one in the list (2.2GHz) 8GB.....for RAM fm.......for game and pick FM16 From what it shows, the CPU and graphics card are approx twice as good as what is recommended, and the RAM 4x But take a look yourself and then use that site if you want to check other laptops, etc out to compare. nangaparbat
Out of curiosity, money no object, what is the dream FM machine and what improvements would I see over my current top of the line MBP from 2013? In particular looking at how many leagues I can load/how fast I can progress through seasons. ATM it's running slow as hell running 3 leagues (fresh install of OSX). nangaparbat
Reason I ask is that I've been debating separating church and state (have all programming on mac, have all games on a windows laptop) and I'm curious to see what the disparity is.
thomit
Out of curiosity, money no object, what is the dream FM machine and what improvements would I see over my current top of the line MBP from 2013? In particular looking at how many leagues I can load/how fast I can progress through seasons.ATM it's running slow as hell running 3 leagues (fresh install of OSX). Well, if we're sticking to laptops .... you can get laptops that has the top of the line, latest generation Core i7 desktop processors in them (like the Core i7 6700K, or even the 6950 Extreme, or even a Xeon ...), as well as the laptop equivalent of the Nvidia GTX 980 graphics card. Not the GTX 980M which is considerably weaker than it's desktop namesake, but the full fat one, the same as the desktop version, only made to fit into a (large) laptop body. Now that would obviously be a dream machine both for FM and for other games, and pretty much for everything else really, as long as performance is all we care about. However, such a beast comes with it's obvious drawbacks, such as being the least mobile of any mobile computer, going on battery wouldn't last you long, and so on. Like this one. In the real world, where often some sensible compromises has to be made, I think I have what is close to a dream compromised machine both for FM and for other games. It has a Core i7 6700HQ processor, 8 GB of DDR4 RAM, a SSD + a HDD, and Nvidia GTX 970M - which is enough of a card to play most games on very high settings at full resolution - many can be maxed out. All this is put into a relatively slim and light chassis, and it comes with a very nice 15.6 inches 1920x1080 IPS screen and a keyboard that is nice to type on. The cooling system works very well, and there's no excessive heat or noise issues. It runs on Win 10 64. It's this one, only mine is branded differently and have some slight hardware changes (including a better screen). I play with all default leagues ticked (meaning I tick all countries and play with the leagues that are loaded by default in that country), all playable. Advanced database, at the start of the save there are some 180.000 players loaded. The speed of the processing is ok with me, it may be too slow for others. I think it's an improvement over your 3 leagues running slow as hell, allthough I obviously don't know exactly what you mean by slow as hell. It takes me 3 or 4 good evenings of playing to get through a season, and I watch every match in extended mode (comprehensive mode if I make a new tactical tweak). I'm fine with that. I guess that if I only played 3 leagues, a season would take me a couple of hours? I don't really know for sure as I have always loaded up all leagues and the biggest database available with this game series for as long as I can remember. For me, it's the only way of playing. In the FM benchmark thread, the Core i7 6700HQ in that chassis is so far the fastest of all non-overclocked processors; it just a handful of OC'd processors outperforming it, most of them desktop processors.
nangaparbat
If I simulate an entire season, it takes like an evening (6 hours). I think there is a difference between the Windows and Mac versions in terms of speed as the Windows versions runs natively whereas the Mac version is a glorified chrome app? In terms of making it significantly faster I think they need to make it 64 bit and to introduce more concurrency into the way that the processes thread. Mackem742
Hi all, Apologies if this has already been asked as I havent had the time to read through the entire thread. Im in the market for a new laptop as Ive had mine for over 6 years and its on its last legs, playing FM16 on it has become a right chore! Its so slow, no matter how many leagues I have running its performance is always just half a star. Anyway at the end of the month im looking for a new laptop and ill have a budget of £220 maximum, I know this isnt a lot but there must be something that allows me to play FM16 comfortably at the very least, Im not bothered about the 3D graphics as I prefer the 2D classic view anyway. I have been looking on AMazon and found this: Lenovo Ideapad 15.6 inch notebook Intel Celeron N2840, 4GB RAM 500 GB HDD Intergrated graphics. Price of this is £198 Like I said im not bothered about FM16 graphically, I just would like to make it run quicker, especially when I have the logos, face packs, backgrounds etc installed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Barnzy
Hello! Looking for a new laptop - needs to be able to play FM in 3d, play around 14 - 18 leagues comfortably (quick!) I also use the laptop for first person shooters and strategy games like age of empires as well as use excel and access for work on it so need a fair amount of space. Also watch TV on it so screen is important. Budget of around £800 but can be slightly flexible on that.
Welshace
This is pretty good: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/N551VW-FW238T-ASUS-N551VW-FW238T_1829315.html The graphics card lets it down, so on fps's you may need to tone down the graphics settings to medium or high rather than ultra. I always like pcspecialist laptops.. worth checking their website out: http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/pc-specialist-optimus-ii-gt17-960-xs-corei7-6700hq-12gb-1tb-17.3-windows-1-pcs-l861548/version.asp Tbh, the world is your oyster with that sort of budget... so many decent choices. It will be a case of deciding on the smaller details, like quality of the screen, build quality and what you feel is more important in terms of cpu, graphics card or large harddrive etc

callumh15
Hi, I was just wondering how well this laptop would perform when playing Football Manager 16? Would anyone be able to give me an estimate on the amount of stars I would get when starting up a normal save with a few leagues... Any response would be great. Abaddon879
Being shipped out to Australia for a couple months for work and don't fancy playing FM on my work laptop, so need something to keep me going whilst out there. Shipping my desktop out is not an option, so that leaves me with the laptop option. I'm currently running a i5-750 OC'd to around 3.8GHz so I would like something similar in performance. This gives me decent match processing speeds. I have been looking at the Dell Inspiron 7000 (http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/7559-8045-Dell-Inspiron-15-7000-(7559)_1856981.html) which appears to get reasonably good reviews online. However, it is a Dell, and I have never had a good experience with a Dell. My current work laptop is a Dell in fact and the fans are constantly reminding me what it was like when concorde used to fly, even when just browsing a webpage! Alternatively, I am quite tempted by an Ultrabook if I can get one with a good enough processor to not massively impact FM. Problem being, all intel U chips are dual-core which will impact FM heavily. An example would be this Asus I found (http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/K501UB-DM021T-ASUS-K501UB-DM021T_1869973.html) Any suggestions from personal experience would be much appreciated. Budget wise, I can stretch to around £700-850, but bare in mind this is likely only a temporary solution so if a cheaper option is available with similar performance then I would be very interested. P.S. Anyone else having difficulties accessing the FM16 Benchmark thread? I just get a blank page when trying recently?

Could I get better if I sacrifice some hard drive space?
Smurf
You'd be hard pushed to get a faster CPU on that budget. You can do it on PC specialist, but it's only a marginal increase, and you lose the graphics card. What's important to you? Speed or 3D? If it's both then what Welshace posted is excellent. But I think you can do better on PC specialist.
herne79
i7 6700k vs i7 6700. Seriously considering upgrading my PC soon to one of the Skylake i7 cpus. I realise the "k" series are unlocked ready for overclocking, however I don't have much interest in overclocking. If not overclocking, is there any benefit in taking the i7 6700k over the i7 6700? Is it a faster chip out of the box? I'm probably going to answer my own question here (), so for me (and assuming it is faster out of the box), it gives me an additional option in future if I do decide to experiment with overclocking (with the right mobo); possibly (?) better resale value xx years down the line; and the c.£30 price difference isn't significant. One final consideration is whether to wait for the new Kaby Lake cpus. The second half of 2016 is the only proposed release dates I've heard about so far, so perhaps I should force myself to be patient for a few months. But then if you always wait for the next best thing, you end up doing nothing...
Welshace
The difference is minimal between the two out the box.. the only reason to choose a 6700k is for overclocking tbh.. For me the only question is whether to wait for the new range to release meaning the skylake chips drop in price. But than again, 30 notes isn't a lot , so may as well get the 6700k
herne79
Yeh, I'm also interested to see what the next gen AMD chips will be like, although I don't have the patience to wait until 2017 if the latest rumours are true.

It's about 2-3kg, a bit heavy if you ask me - and battery life is 5-6 hours, make that about 1-2 hours with FM. http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/FYRR2-Dell-Vostro-15-3559_1945520.html I did find this refurbished one http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/a1-refurbished-dell-e5420-core-i5-2520m-2.5ghz-4gb-320gb-dvdrw-wifi-webcam-a1-e5420/version.asp
pleb16
Hi I have been playing FM on my macbook air for the last 4 years but it crashed recently. It never caused me much problems other than overheating or when I tried to use another application that was CPU intensive. I normally play 10 Divisions across 5 countries with medium DB. I have done a lot of research and read a lot of your threads. My budget is €300-400 (£250-350) as I need it for coursework ASAP and would prefer a chromebook over a laptop. Some iv found have Pentium processor but you dont seem to recommend these. Here is a list of some of the ones I’m currently looking at. I could stretch my budget to €500 but tbh im enjoying FMT on the ipad in the meantime so slightly reluctant. Would I get away with a laptop thats 1.7 Ghz? Is it ok if turbo brings it over the 2.2 Ghz. Reluctant to buy online due to previous bad experiences. Toshiba C55-C-13W 4GB RAM i3 4005u 1.7Ghz 500 GB €350 (http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-30-C5513W) Asus X555LA 8GB RAM i5 5200u 2.2 Ghz 1 TB €550 (http://www.pcworld.ie/Product/asus-x555la-156-laptop-black/328581/396.0.0) Toshiba L50-B-2JF 4GB RAM i5 5200u 2.2 Ghz 500 GB €500 (http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-30-L502JF) Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. Chromebook for FM - never done it myself but here ya go http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php/414247-Football-manager-on-chromebook http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/NX.VC7EK.003-Acer-TravelMate-P258_1868584.html Comes to about €470 Just because I'm from Ireland, I know buying a laptop online is horrendous as there's not good deal sites in Ireland. This one is refurbed - it's a bit on the old side but would work http://www.laptopsdirect.ie/a1-refurbished-hewlett-packard-dv6-6b-51sa-intel-core-i5-2430m-2.4ghz-6gb-7-a1-a3c37ea-w7/version.asp
