New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

What 2? 4gb I presume you mean RAM and 1TB I presume is hard drive. I5 is good enough, or so I've been told. There's plenty of good laptops throughout the thread take the best bits of each put them together and look if anything incorporates all of them. That's what I've done and went with pc specialist in the end.

yeah its 4GB RAM AND 1TB HARD DRIVE. sorry i know absolutely nothing about computers

hey chiek... you've pretty much told us the only two area's that aren't that important when it comes to FM :D

FM is all about the processor (cpu) ... It would wholly depend on what i5 you've got your eyes on, some are ok, some are not so much.

But certainly aim for 4gb ram or more. hard drive space is all personal choice really, for instance in this laptop i'm using now to write this , I only have 100gb and it's fine for work stuff. I use another laptop which has 1tb because I use it for games, music and movies.

If you give us an idea on your budget and what you would like to do with your laptop (just for general every day use or high end gaming etc? ) , I'm sure we can come up with some suggestions :)

Hi 'welshace', just wanted to thank you for indulging 'the owd git'. You were really helpful and I've finally took the plunge. Went for a Dell with i7 processor, 17" screen, Nvidia 650m graphics, 8GB ram, and at least I felt I understood a bit more about what I was buying. Paid more than you said I needed to really, but managed to get a deal so I was happy and I'm sure my Grandson will be very happy. Thanks again mate, and you Eugene!

Cheik, I can't get the first one up , there's a website error.. but I can tell you the 15r's are pretty good.. I'm typing on one right now infact :D.. the i5 is better than the i3 for sure.

And everything is pretty ok for the price range really, I'd go for it.

couple of days ago i mentioned how hot my laptop got playing fm13 on sony vaio, Eugene T recommended a laptop cooler?

I purchased a "Coolermaster Notepal U3 Cooler" which arrived today and can honestly say this has transformed the heat concernand im now running with a nice cool laptop and no heat cut outs....

So I've started buying components for my Custom PC;

Zalman Z9-U3 Case

I5-3470 Quad Core, 3.2Ghz

LG DVD/CD Drive

Regarding GPU, am only going for the GFORCE 640 2GB to start with, and then will look to upgrade within a couple of months.

Still a long way to go, but I can't wait to get this built :D

Hey Welshace, you seem like the go to guy when it comes to advise about a new laptop.

I'm looking at purchasing a new laptop as my other one has recently started to playup.

I was looking at this one, which is availabe for £690

Item specifics
Condition: New other (see details)
Type: Notebook
Processor Type: Intel Core i7 (Intel Core i7 740QM Processor 1.73 And Turbo Boosts to 2.93 GHZ)
Brand: Dell
Processor Speed: 2.93 GHz
Graphics Processing Type: Dedicated Graphics AMD FIREPRO M8900 (AMD FIRE PRO M8900 Graphics Card)
Memory: 8 GB (8gb 1333 Mhz Ram)
Hard Drive Capacity: 750GB (750GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive)
Operating System: Windows 7
Operating System Edition: Home Premium (Windows 7 Home Premuim 64 Bit Operating System)
Screen Size: 17.3"
Release Year: 2011

Would this be decent at running a few Leagues on FM13?

On the description, it says the Laptop is more of a video editing machine, so that has put me off a little.

From the description:

This Laptop Was Taken New. And Upgraded From It's Original Configuration to a Newer More Up To Date Set Up.

That Is The Reason For The AMD FirePro Graphics Card. This Card Is The Brother Of AMD 6970M Series Card But, This Card Is Set up More For Video Editing Auto CAD ETC.

Would you say it was worth the money, or could you find me something better for around the same price?

I'm looking to spend around £700, I could push a little more towards £750/£800 if needs be. But I just want something with a decent sized screen/graphics, and that can smoothly play a longterm game with a few Leagues (not loads, just a few) loaded.

The processor is a bit old on that model. Other than that it's ok. The graphics card is good but might be a bit slow on other games.

You don't need a wonderful graphics card for Football Manager.

For £700 http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_G780_1296594.html

This has an up-to-date processor - 8 gb RAM - Dedicated graphics card of reasonable quality.

This would have no problem running a lot of countries and leagues. It's very high-end.

As to the amount - who knows it's anyones guess. But you could easily run about 10-15 countries (setting some to Background Only)

Do you know how loud/what the speakers are like on that laptop? I watch alot of dvd/blurays on my laptop, and my current laptop is pretty quiet, so im looking for one with decent speakers too. Also is the graphics card better on the £700 laptop?

Link to post

That lenovo is superb... I couldn't find a better spec for the price really..

But if speakers are important to you.

There's also this:

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Lenovo_Z580_Metal_-_Core_i7-3520M_8GB_1TB_15.6_Win8_DVDRW_NVidia_2GB__M81GEUK/version.asp#maindesc

Now, While the speakers in that are top class, the processor is slightly worse (dual core rather than quad core for example) .. and it's also a 15 inch rather than 17 inch screen.

Personally, I'd stick with Eugene's suggestion and just invest in top quality headphones or speakers... even £50 external speakers will be better than the best integrated ones in a laptop tbh.

Link to post

Also I noticed that laptop is windows 8, I think I remember Welshace posting something in this thread about sticking with windows 7 if possible. Is windows 8 not really good with FM?

Windows 8 is perfectly fine with FM i'm told. TBH it's just my own opinion, I'm just not a fan myself.. Supposedly, games are even better optimised on windows 8. So don't just take my word for it.

I wouldn't have a clue what the speakers are like.

According to the Spec Sheet from Lenovo they're Integrated stereo speakers (2x1.5W)

Which is about 85-88dB.

You drop about 25dB per meter - so take it you're about arms length from laptop

- that's about 5.5dB

So you'd be looking at an audible 80-83dB for audio.

What are your current speakers wattage?

Ok, thanks guys.

I'm torn between options now. :D

What do you think of the one I posted? I kinda have my heart set on that, everything about it stood out to me, apart from the processor.

But it's an Dell Alienware M17x, really nice design, great sound system/HD screen etc, and I'm guessing that with it being an Alienware it would still run most games smoothly.. especially FM13?

I've currently been using a AMD Turion II Ip40 Dual Core Processor over a year now, which has always seemed pretty quick to me.. but the laptop skin has cracked at one side due to the wieght of the screen, it constanly overheats and turns off, and I've had to use 2 new harddrives through the warranty, as I got the dreaded blue screen a couple of times.. and now to top it off my video adapter has died.. I can only get the laptop to start up in safemode (otherwise I just get a black screen just before the login screen loads)

So even the I-7 740qm would make a massive difference to me, and it looks a really solid/bulky design (compared to the thin hp laptop I have atm) So I don't mind it not being the very latest processor, as long as it can handle a few Leagues on a longterm save, and so long as the laptop lasts me 2/3 years.

But would you say it was worth paying £690 for, or would I be paying too much? I'd feel kinda stupid if I pay £690, then 1 year later I'd find it redundant.. when for £10 more I could get an almost similar laptop, but with the latest I-7 processor etc.

I'm not sure, on the front of my Laptop next to the speakers, it just says 'Dolby advanced audio'

The alienware... It's still a good processor... but it's one of the old gen ones ... plus it's an alienware, which makes it instantly overpriced and not worth it imo.

Yeah, I did some googling this morning and noticed the same theme.

Alot of people saying it's way over-priced, and maybe before Dell bought it out it was value for money, but now your just paying for the name etc.

Are Lenovo's generally good laptops?

What's the exact model of your computer?

Type into the Start Menu "dxdiag" and hit return - under System it should give System Model.

I'll look up the spec data for the model and find out.

It's a HP Pavillion dv6 laptop.

All I can find out is they're Altec Lansing speakers - only one document gave a 2.0w for the speakers.

The sound won't be as good from the Lenovo given that detail.

Ah, no problem. Cheers for looking.

If you spot any other good deals, be sure to post them in here ;) I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

I'll be purchasing the laptop this friday I think.

I'm guessing the £700 Lenova you posted, will have no problem running a fairly large setup on FM13.. no overheating/straining the laptop etc?

i'm getting lost in all this, its even worse when i try searching on laptop sites

is there much difference between integrated and dedicated graphics in terms of gameplay?

im looking at some straight off the shelf laptops and have a budget of around £300-£400

obviously the possibilites are endless but i need a decent one thats going to be able to play fm for the next few years as the only reason im looking at a new laptop is the one i have now isnt playing fm13 properly

i dont watch matches in 3d but i like the major leagues loaded so im guessing ill need more processing power than graphics power

any help would be really appreciated

If your sure you won't watch games in 3D and aren't interested in games then I 'think' you don't need to worry about a dedicated graphics card.

If your budget can stretch to £500 then there's this (with an i7 3rd gen) http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_Z580_1296623.html which includes a £75 cashback to bring it to £504.

Otherwise there's this http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Packard_Bell_EasyNote_TE11_1288430.html 8gb RAM and a 3rd gen i5 procesor, £20 over budget though.

If you don't want to use 3D match then you probably won't need a dedicated graphics card - keep in mind this may limit you in future releases - it may, that's like saying "pigs may fly", but nobody really knows what developments SI are going to make.

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Toshiba_Satellite_Pro_C850-1EQ_1296675.html

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Packard_Bell_EasyNote_TE11_1286917.html

These two will easily play FM at good quality - and if you wanted to watch the 3D matches you could probably once the graphics are set to low detail.

Cheers for the info welshace.

I found another laptop and was wondering if the jump from 4GB to 6GB memory and a Hard disk jump from 500 to 750 would make a difference?

Also is there a big difference between.....

CPU Intel® Core™ i5-2450M processor (3 MB L3 cache, 2.50 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.1 GHz, DDR3 1333 MHz, 35 W)

and......

CPU Intel® Core™ i5-3210M processor (3 MB L3 cache, 2.50 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.1 GHz, DDR3 1333 MHz, 35 W)

Cheers.

Difference in 4gb RAM and 6gb RAM is negligible.

Hard Drive capacity won't make a difference either.

The i5 2450m is a 2nd generation processor

The i5 3210m is a 3rd gen processor

All this means is that the 3rd gen is a newer build - basically the difference in the 2 generations is that the newer generation has a slight performance advantage over the 2nd gen - along the value of about 5% extra performance. But they also consume less power - so you get a longer battery life.

The other difference is that the i3/i5/i7 processors all have graphics handling built right into the chip -

the i5 2450m has the designated Intel 3000 Graphics while the i5 3210m has the designated 4000 graphics.

You can read a lovely report here http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-4000-Benchmarked.73567.0.html

Basically - the i5 3210m will consume less power - it has a slight performance enhancement - and a better integrated graphics hd 4000

Both the i5's listed have the same clock speed and same overclocking rate - but you will definitely have a better experience with the 3rd generation processor.
