Gee_Simpson
Yeah the 2670QM wasn't that far behind the 3570 from the benchmarks iirc, it was just about level with the 2500k which I think I'm right in saying is the older version of the 3570k so it must be pretty awesome for a laptop processor as I know they aren't quite as powerful as say a desktop processor with the same specs. As I said before, I currently have a desktop with the Core 2 Quad Q660 but it's showing signs of it's age and is slowing down rapidly. With this also being a Quad, I'm just not sure how much in terms of an upgrade the 2670QM would be. It would need to be quite a bit for me to consider it. Welshace
the 2670QM is a huge upgrade to the Q660, its a quad too btw .... but yeah.. get a desktop if you can find one with a 3570k for the price

Man, just a few years back, you couldn't even get a laptop with a quad. Yeah I'll try and keep a lookout for a desktop with a 3570/k but I doubt I'll find one for such a bargain price. This is a pretty good deal isn't it? I know the i7 2600 is very good. http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_X3990_1195329.html Hmm... read bad things about this one though regarding no vga support. Gee_Simpson
Hopefully you can find a good desktop deal, Welshace? The laptop is still tempting though, weighing up my options. I will take your advice though and not spend £700+ just for FM because as you said, it is madness really and a waste of money. I'll try limit myself to £600. Welshace
if you like the sound of a 3570k based system http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/system/Cyberpower_Z77_configurator/ theres that... the basic spec is : i5 3750k 8gb ram the geforce gt 610 card (low spec card but it will breeze through FM and will run games like crysis, crysis 2 and skyrim etc in medium detail probably) 1tb HDD get water cooling as standard on that aswell.. and that's £550 ... but you can play around with the specs to your hearts content. there's lots out there, just need to know what you want and search really
Gee_Simpson
That system you linked didn't have an OS included in the price which is another 74 quid. It's hard finding what I want for a cheap price. I've been on most of those custom PC sites and when I'm finished configuring, it ends up being £650+. I need a monitor too if I'm going down the desktop route. I have one but it's old and would prefer a new one. I don't need much storage, 500GB would be fine. Even though I don't need a good graphics card, I would still want a better one than my current card (9500 GT) which would be the GT 630 or ATI 6570. I do like the sound of the 2500/k or 3570/k yeah. The best deals atm are the 2 Acer's tbh. The laptop you linked & the Desktop I linked.
Welshace
well if you don't mind the 2500k (which is still my favourite chip btw ) than it becomes a lot more viable. http://www.chillblast.com/Chillblast-Fusion-Chimera.html (no monitor) http://www.chillblast.com/Chillblast-Fusion-Neptune.html (just add a graphics card)
Gee_Simpson
I always worry that the stock cooling/PSU in these systems won't be sufficient enough? Would they be ok? I always change the PSU & CPU fans but maybe that is unnecessary?

See this is why I'm thinking my original build on pc specialist with different PSU/CPU cooler, case etc. was worth it but then I remember it's only for FM. Maybe that laptop is the best overall deal for me then? What did you think of the Acer desktop I linked with i7 2600 Quad? Pretty amazing for the price imo despite dummy VGA port. Welshace
it looks impressive but frankly.. the 2600 isn't any better than a 2500k when it comes to gaming or casual use really. and while the GT 2gb graphics card sounds impressive , it's actually lower range, and the GTS is better. i would be much more inclined to go for something like a : http://www.chillblast.com/Chillblast-Fusion-Chimera.html which has some decent quality components rather than the acer. Alright I'll keep that in mind regarding the i7 2600. I'm guessing Acer make better laptops than desktops in general? Yeah I like the Chimera. The only thing is and this might sound silly but I think the tower looks ugly and even the other ones you can upgrade to lol.
Welshace
acer certainly aren't the first i'd go to for a desktop put it like that! it's just that I know chillblast and they are, in my experience, hugely reliable... they use quality parts, quality components and their warranty is decent too, but honestly... search around.. you'll find many many websites
Gee_Simpson
I'm really swaying towards the laptop tbh. I know both of those processors are better but roughly how much of a performance increase would I be likely to see from a 2500k or 3570k compared with the 2670QM? Would there be that much of a difference when playing FM? 499.99 for that laptop is an incredible deal really.
Welshace
not a huge difference at all tbh mate, the laptop is amazing for the price and you won't be disappointed at all
Gee_Simpson
Cheers. I'll probably end up going for the laptop then unless I stumble upon a better desktop deal (I doubt it though)
Gee_Simpson
I've been reading around and indeed the 2670QM is about level with a stock i5 2500k which is astonishing for a laptop CPU really. It just shows you how much of a bargain this is really. That's it, my mind is made up and I'll be purchasing the Acer laptop. I'll be removing the 2GB in the 2nd slot and be adding a 4GB stick so I have a very healthy 8GB I'll be upgrading to Windows 8 too for £15 which is a great deal from Microsoft. The bargain price of the laptop itself has enabled me to make these extra little upgrades. I may even invest in an SSD for it in the future as I've read that they are extremely fast in comparison to the now ageing HDD's. Cheers for the advice Welshace and especially the link to that amazing deal

Gee_Simpson
Mostly it's for just in the house anyway so I'm not bothered about portability but with the desktop I would also have to buy a monitor, keyboard & desk as I'm keeping my current PC for my 6 year old Nephew. I thought it was quite good value seen as it has an Ivy Bridge i5, struggled to find a better processor under the £400 mark. Cheers, and yeah I emailed them yesterday and this was the reply I received about 15 mins ago: Hi, Thanks for looking at Palicomps systems for your computer needs. All our 550W PSUs are currently being upgraded free of charge to 650W models. They are ACE branded and work fine with overclocked systems, the only time anything more is required is if adding an upgraded graphics card. Hope this helps and if you need anything else then let us know. Many Thanks ................................. I've heard bad things about Palicomp and the whole changing their name on ebay thing etc but I guess the moaners will always be heard loudest. Tbh if they were that bad they could easily have ripped me off and said that I needed to upgrade the PSU but they didn't, which is a good sign. I've read that it's important to get a good PSU though that delivers the wattage as advertised. I know some only reach that as a peak and not a continual output. I can't say I've ever heard of ACE. Nah, it's only like £16 to buy! That seems to cheap imo and I've read bad reviews about it, breaking within 2 weeks etc. So I can't take the risk with it. It seems as if I'm wanting a good PSU, I should go with Corsair, Seasonic, XFX, Cooler Master etc. It looks to me as if you get what you pay for whem choosing a PSU and ACE is well too cheap. You said you build your own systems am I correct? What PSU brand do you choose?

Scribe
I'm interested in the Acer as well. I'd been thinking about something with a SSD for faster saving of games, but I can't seem to find one that matches up otherwise. christrott79
Hi guys, going to piggy back this thread also if I may.... My work IT upgrade (yes, I have the best job in the world and am able to play FM all day!) has fallen nicely to coincide with FM13 so thought I would ask a bit of advice regarding a couple of desktops that are possible for me. Only problem is that we only run HP equipment so that limits my options somewhat. Currently desktop is Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E4600 2.4GHz, 1.97GB RAM, I can just about run FM12 on this with 5 nations and large database but it is frustratingly slow. 3D Matches, no chance! The 2 systems that I am looking at are as follows:- HP HPE H9-1230ea Phoenix Intel Core i7-3770 3.4GHz 8MB L3 Cache 6GB DDR3 (1 x 2GB, 1 x 4GB) 1TB SATA 6G AMD Radeon HD 7770 GHz (2GB dedicated) with Avivo Technology or HP Pavilion HPE h8-1350ea Intel Core i7-3770 3.4GHz 8MB L3 Cache 8GB DDR3 (2 x 4GB) 2TB SATA 6G AMD Radeon HD 7570 (2GB Dedicated) with Avivo Technology Thoughts please guys or can anyone suggest something more appropriate from the HP range?
