fil.jasz
Hi, What should I pay attention to during searching for young players for my team? Is there any specific pattern? Should I relay on my scouts and 'stars'? How do you recruit for your teams?
GianniM
Look for good personalities, like ambitious, professional etc because this determines their mental strength and how much effort they will take to actually become better. And of course look at their abilities in relation to what position and role you have in mind for them.
Snorks
Scouts and stars are the starting point for me. They are what indicate whether the player is worth a closer look or not. So, initially I only want a Scout Report, from that, I decide whether the player is worth scouting further. If I have the budget I go for 100% scouted, with smaller clubs and budgets maybe one -three games before deciding to either shortlist him or not. He gets shortlisted based on MY reading of his attributes, and mentals and personality traits are considered here as well. Determination is a biggie for me, as well as professionalism and ambition. Injury proneness can be a big red flag too. For young players, PA is obviously important, but it relies on professionalism, determination, ambition etc for him to stand any chance of achieving that potential. Is the player able to be mentored? This will improve some of those attributes.
Piperita
First thing to keep in mind: What position are you looking out for? Some positions have few stats that are needed, meaning even with a lower CA the player is close to perfect. For those ambition and determination are not that (but still a good lot) important and I can live with okay PAs whereas a future RPM needs it all the way up to realise his potential. Things I look for at first glance: Any hidden attributes my scouts have gauged? Highly injury prone, low consistency, no big match skills can be deadly for a future star to be! Mentals and character are my next target to look at. These sorts of players can play earlier and thus need this help to fit in early. For example, I'd rather have a Target Man with two points less in technical skills than one who can't read the game or chokes all the time. Finally physical stats cause they are the hardest to train and moat of my players need speed for my system. Roles that don't need much skills are immediately match fit and skilled roles are not an immediate danger. I once lost a 4 goal lead in twenty minutes cause my youth players I wanted to introduced completely blacked out and killed my midfield. Meanwhile another youth prospect with nothing to speak about but good mentals was immediately okay on the pitch multiple times despite being worse in every single technical stat. FrazT
Whilst many of the player attributes are important for getting a future star, one of the most important ones is determination- without this, a young player will never get close to his potential despite his technical skills. Is that still so? I have a 17 year prospect with a solid four in it and he's training in the 9.x region for almost an entire season now and coming along nicely. FrazT
Determination can increase, but in my personal opinion, a starting point of 4 is unlikely to get to a level that I would want for my youngsters to develop into first-team regulars. Nothing to lose at the moment, but something to watch for the future.

Determination, Professionalism and Ambition are the 3 key attributes for development. I am guessing he has a good personality, despite the low Determination?
