The Great San Marino Challenge

The Goal - To Win The World Cup with International Minnows San Marino

The San Marino challenge entails taking international football minnows San Marino to the top with a World Cup victory. This seems impossible however San Marino has an ace up it's sleeve. San Marino Calcio is a club based in San Marino that plays in Italy's Serie D. Getting this club promoted to Serie A and investing heavily in youth facilities, junior coaching and youth recruitment should see higher quality Sammarinese players produced leading to a better national team.

Rules and Instructions

Serie D is not in the original game database. To be able to take control of San Marino Calcio you MUST download an editor file which includes Serie D. This is the one I have used but I cannot vouch for its quality as of yet. There are multiple ones on the workshop you can use, I don't know which work perfectly.

To have the option to manage the San Marino National Team you MUST select custom for database size and then go to nations, San Marino and make sure "load all players of nationality" is ticked or you'll be unable to take control of the National Team. Must be done when selecting leagues at the start of the game.

Do not cheat with the use of ingame editor, genie scout etc. Spoils the achievement.

That is all, hopefully some of you decide to take up the challenge, it's a long one!

Could you also holiday for a season, reload until the club side get promoted and then take over? That way you'd be able to be eligible for both this challenge and the Youth Academy Challenge

It's good to see a new generation of Titani managers embracing the challenge, I want to see some real results though :D. I'll most likely start this once again when SM leagues are out (hearing the editor is pretty bugged atm hence the lack of reliable league packs) though I'm a bit disappointed that italian clubs cannot add their B teams in time (would have been a great addition for a mini-challenge eg win Serie A and Serie B in the same year using only SM players!).

I'll leave my biggest achievement from FM18 - didn't go really far with the save but managed this for the first time in my FM career:

DUBBED THE NEW ANDY SELVA. Nuff said.

Nice to see you man, you were the original inspiration for me to take up this challenge from fmbase and it's taken so many hours of my life away over the years haha.

Yeah that'd be fine too, I considered that but just decided to jump into Serie D

Nah that's fine, maybe I should add some achievements for anyone choosing to go the route of managing in San Marino

Think it could be quite helpful due to longevity of the save. Also throw in some achievements with the national team youth sides. (just an idea)

Perhaps only a few. It is a good thing for them that our squad is so below of Serie C quality, so they can play. We are conceding SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many goals from set pieces and corners at the moment (2 goals per game on average), gotta solve that issue if we are to avoid relegation.

How are your finances? If I don't get out of Serie D this season we will be in big financial trouble

-100k in overall balance. Improved youth recruitment only once and definitely need more on that end. The board injects some money once in a while, so I do not think it is going to be a problem for us. If we relegate, then we are screwed up big time though.

I've just started my journey. Will upload a quick preview post soon. Gonna attempt this challenge as youth only. I've also started as manager of the national team. I may regret this but I feel with the nations league, it should be easier to get that first competitive win early on in the save.

Yeah it was 2017-2022 really but strangely I got the three best regens including that striker in first two seasons (serie D and Serie C) with rubbish recruitment and reputation while as a Serie A club with better facilities we were producing below average youngsters... The new Andy Selva was pretty cool, I had the next Massimo Bonini once maybe in FM14 and I thought that was it so this has to count as a great achievement :D.

Only Juventus have a B team in Italy irl and unfortunately other teams cannot ask to create a B team in FM19.

2018-2019 Youth Intake - We've been BLESSED

115327676_2018YouthIntake.thumb.png.9a82b65e6bfcb630c05b4cc035cc5d44.png

Wow! A 5* potential player from San Marino who's already 2.5* ability aged 15!

1158877133_2018Zonzini.thumb.png.48997dd5b0f92f58221f838d0eee7183.png

Zonzini is a complete gem, I really can't believe how lucky this is to get him in Serie D. I haven't upgraded anything yet. And he also has a good personality. What a gem. I don't currently play with an AM but I'll probably rejig the formation to get him into the team. This guy is gonna be a beast, not even sure we will be able to hold onto him.

Collected merely 10 points in 26 games and sitting at 20th place. I am pretty much sure we will relegate, but already got some hot prospects this year so if I am not fired, we can rebuild from scratch. Though gonna be hell to play again in Serie D financially speaking if we cannot sell some players.

Good luck mate, respect for still wanting to continue. In the long run maybe it might be better for another year in Serie D to get some youngsters some experience. Hopefully the finances don't go bad because they're already looming over me.

I had known that we were not ready for some Serie C football even before we got our promotion, but did not think that we would do THIS bad. We have conceded more goals than set pieces and crosses than we have scored all season long. I was not able to come up with a solution for that. Our full-backs was the most crucial part of our gameplay, this season both sucked big time. Also no promising striker, (except one pressing striker whom I do not see scoring more than 10 goals a season for a long time), thus we have to stick with Rrasa. We are definitely paying wages way over the Serie D level, so it is going to be hard to cope with. Well, I have learnt a lot at my first attempt at San Marino Youth Challenge at least so if I get fired, I will start over, hoping that I get better newgens.

2018-19 Season Review - Frustration

Serie D

803761167_2018LeagueTable.thumb.png.5b0a3e96ca2c7d46400fad70c1a8bf09.png

We came up short this season of both the league win and playoffs. The two teams ahead of us got out front early and never really looked back. A shaky November saw us pick up 1 win in 5 games and that was enough to give these teams a gap that we never closed. Annoying but we go again next season.

Transfers

1339887087_2018Transfers.thumb.png.ae863afcaf1fb0650e601b8960622f04.png

I made the transfers from Colombo down. We brought in a lot of loanees who were a good help, in particular Costa was a very solid left back who defended extremely well the entire season. The best of the freebies was San Marino's own Matteo Vitaoli, veterans of this challenge will probably recognise the name. He has 55 caps for San Marino and chipped in with a decent 7 goals and 10 assists in 30 games.

Awards and Team Of The Season

62652150_2018Awards.thumb.png.b9783f40d7d84d8b661848c643762035.png

Matteo Gasperi cleaned up at the awards and with an average rating of 7.51 and a crazy 12 goals and 10 assists from midfield its easy to see why. This guy is a class above and I'm praying nobody comes in for him in the summer because without him this season would have been much worse. Colombo up top probably needs to be replaced, he didn't get the production I was hoping for with 13 goals in 33 games. I think we can do better.

Youth Intake

894186008_2018YouthIntake.thumb.png.927c5cb51fc6417055ed23d15ff56dfc.png101310964_2018Zonzini.thumb.png.58d28b6af14fc3601575d4f59f3285eb.png

First ever youth intake gave us a complete gem. Single nationality Nicola Zonzini is already a backup level player aged 15 with good determination and personality. If developed properly he will do damage for a long team on the international level. I'm surprised how good he is considering we are in Serie D with no facility upgrades to speak of. He plays AM which is kind of annoying, I think I will adapt the tactic next season to try and fit him into the team and give him first team football but I'm also training him to play CM.

Finances

1471112891_2018Finances.thumb.png.9e8e09ce306888e4403499d00c64ddd9.png

Finances are probably gonna be a big issue next season. Despite me not even getting close to maxing the wage budget I was given we still lost money hand over first and needed 175k of investments from the board to stay afloat. If the boards money dries up we are gonna be in massive trouble. It's imperative we get out of this division as soon as possible.

Well, as expected we have faced a relegation. The squad quality was way below of the average Serie C one, we could not solve the problem of conceding from set pieces and overall we have performed mostly terrible. The board has allocate more wage budget that I have expected, so we do not have to sell many players. Still unless we do so, we will be in big trouble financially speaking, so I will try to send away a few players. From now on our first team will consist almost exclusively newgens, so if they develop sufficiently, we have a better chance at Serie C next time.

We still do not have any quality wingers, so we will stick by narrow formations, mainly 4-5-1 (one DM, three MCs and one AMC) and 4-4-2 (one DM, two MCs and one AMC). I have already one promising attacking midfielder, so if Rrasa and our newgen pressing striker can score over 15 goals at total, we should be back in Serie C next season.

Quick Update

My first attempt failed basically. I tried youth only and started as national team manager. It was going pretty awfully and I thought sod this, Ill start again as just the club manager and allow myself signings. And i,m currently here.....

League Table

27 games in and were still in with a good chance of the play offs. We are not going to catch Reggio Audace, who are amazingly unbeaten still. Seeing they won the league in @rycl77 save makes me think them being so strong will be a common thing we all see.

Youth Intake

The main reason for this mini update really, A decent start to youth intakes with one absolute gem. Claudio Valentini yp19a. Amazed to get a player of this standard in the first intake. Hes already of a standard to play for our first team, he has the dual nationality, but im more focused on the club side for the near future. He should either be a brilliant player for us, or at least move on for a decent amount in the future. I am quite happy to develop players and sell them on until i'm higher up the leagues.

@rycl77 it would appear the game likes to throw in a first season gem

Haha wow I was getting annoyed trying to catch Reggio myself but your guys are on another level. Hopefully you can get into the playoffs. Valentini looks really good, I wonder if he's going to hold out to try and play for Italy or not. At the very least if you don't get promoted he should bag a lot of goals in Serie D.

Season 1 Review Serie D/D 2018/19

Competitions

Results 1   Results 2   League Table

An unexpected promotion. After a very strong showing in the league this season, we managed to seal 2nd place on the final day. Going into the play offs, we faced Latina in the semi finals, who we beat 1-0 in a very tight and tense game, they edged it on stats, but its the score that matters. In the final, i was optimistic until i saw we faced Reggio Audace. They topped our league, whilst doing it unbeaten. I genuinely thought we was facing another season in Serie D. I was amazed when we pulled off the biggest robbery since Man Utd beat Bayern in the UCL final. A 3-1 scoreline, doesn't tell the tale. We had 33% possession, but somehow pulled it off. Serie C here we come.

Squad   End of Season Awards   Transfers

Managed to do some great business this season. With some brilliant loan signings. and some solid free transfers. Tartaglione is already signed for another year on loan, and Servillo the striker was a good January addition. Ill be looking to develop Claudio Valentini yp19a alot more than I have this season, with him getting limited game time in our promotion push. @rycl77 Hes playing for San Marino u21's so i'm hoping hes already made hes mind up internationally.

 Finances    Facilities

Not the best season on this front, Ive played past the season update now in game, and although our finances look awful here, weve been given a 22k a week wage budget which is a massive increase. And have 75k in the bank. I havent managed to upgrade any facilities due to the finances.

Records

Club Records    National Team Records

Aims For Next Season

I hate saying just to stay up, I need to see the standard of player we can sign before realistically judging what we can do. A couple of the squad should be capable of doing the business at the higher standard of football but be definitely need some improvements. Ill be looking to offer trials to every player released by a Serie A side this summer as there is usually some real gems that go unnoticed.

2019-20 January Update

500170920_2019JanTable.thumb.png.bd03a10a6f7fa9cca3748ab9dbb224d5.png

Extremely tight between us and Pavia at the moment. They've been top pretty much all year but as you can see with their last 5 games they've only won 2 and we've managed to capitalise and now get level with them. I dare to jinx it when I say that I think we *SHOULD* get at least playoffs this year barring an absolute collapse but I am of course hoping to go up as champions. Going to have my eyes peeled all January for a striker as 16 year old Febi has 6 goals in 20 which isn't really good enough, although he does have a knack of bagging very important goals.

Special shoutout to San Marino's own D'Addario who is once again causing absolute mayhem from right back. He has a ridiculous 8 man of the matches in 17 games from wing back and he keeps popping up with extremely vital goals or assists. In my last game I was at home vs the team bottom of the league, battered them for 90 mins but couldn't score and then in the 94th minute the hero D'Addario pops up in the box for a corner and ends up smashing it home.

Last year gave us Zonzini so we probably deserved to have a pretty terrible intake. Not much to get excited about here tbh.

2019-20 Season Review - Champions

Serie D

179991657_2019PlayoffFinal.thumb.png.dcc27de7614697bd568249da17072795.png

Spent most of the season fighting with Pavia for control of top spot, I eventually wrangled it away from them and then they absolutely collapsed and finished 4th which is pretty mad. Once we got ahead of Pavia we never looked back, kept winning and winning until eventually they couldn't keep up. League was wrapped up with 4 games to go, dominant season. We then had to go and play in the Serie D playoffs vs the winners of Group C which was Pontedera who we beat 3-0 pretty easy. Serie C here we come.

Transfers

1393591727_2019transfers.thumb.png.5d685f00dfdb5a61343e8d2261c32667.png

Transfer wise I brought in a lot of loanees. They serve two purposes, 1. they're obviously good players and 2. they're all here for free which is critical when the club loses as much money as we do. The best signings were Harvey St Clair who banged 15 goals in from the wing and Nannelli who got 16 assists from the right side, a lot of them crosses to St Clair.

In the team of the season you'll see 17 year old Zonzini who made 28 league appearances at the age of 16, got us 8 goals and 2 assists. Player of the season went to D'Addario (who's from San Marino) who had a ridiculous season at right back with a 7.53 avg rating, 3 goals, 10 assists, 9 MoTM's. Our keeper ends the season with a 91% pass completion rate which shows his success at helping us play out from the back as you'd never get 91% punting it to the striker.

Youth Intake

Youth intake kinda sucked, nothing to get excited about here.

Finances

Finances held up alright, ended up in the red which kinda sucks but hopefully now with promotion we will be okay.

We went up bossing the ball. A lot of people always told me to keep it simple and play direct in the lower leagues because you won't have the players to play football that requires technical ability but you can defo craft a good enough team to pass around the teams in the lower leagues.

QUICK UPDATE

Serie C is proving to be a tough nut to crack. I thought we signed really well in the summer. We improved most positions, even with 5 or 6 loan signings. However going into the winter break we sat 16th. I've been playing a quite defensive 4141 with a dm, 2 cms and 2 wingers. this worked well last season, but hasn't done so well this year. Decided to go to a 424 which I've used often on FM for years, and our first game back we played Livorno and pulled off a well deserved 1-0 win.  League Table after the Livorno win. As you can the league is very tight, and with as low as 10th place getting a play off spot, im still hopeful. The team is young, and improving all the time.

Season 2 Review 2019/20 Serie C/b

Competitions

Results 1    Results 2    Competitions Review

It really was a season of two halves. Going into the Christmas break, a relegation fight looked a real possibility, but with a few key loan additions, and a switch to a more attacking formation, our form took a massive upturn.  12 wins from our last 19 league games meant we finished in a very respectable 9th place, San Marino's highest ever league finish. Onto the play offs where we beat Renate 3-0 in the 1st Rnd. The next tie was against Giana Erminio, and after a goalless draw, we progressed due to being the higher seeded side (very harsh) . The 3rd round was a two legged tie against Juve Stabia, a 2-1 1st leg triumph, saw us progress after a 0-0 2nd leg result. In the QF we faced Novara, who the bookies had as comfortable favourites, and this prediction rang true as they beat us 2-1 over the 2 legs to end our promotion dreams. I didn't expect to do so well this season, especially after our start to the campaign. Overall im delighted, and looking forward to next season. If we can add a few new signings, and carry our end of season form into the next season, we should have a real shot at promotion.

Playing Side

Squad    Transfers

Another good season of progression for the club. The standard of player has gradually improved, and with my policy of signing young, there is still more room for improvement. A few additions over the summer should make us capable of a promotion tilt.  Loanee Pietro Rovaglia  was the pick of the bunch, notching 27 league goals in 34 games. I've convinced Chievo to send him back on loan next season which im delighted with.

Youth Production

Youth Intake

2 potential 5 star players here, one dual nationality, one sammarinese only which is a positive, both with different qualities and personalities. Hopefully 1 of them can develop into a decent goalkeeper.

Behind The Scenes

Facilities    Finances

Not great on this front, we lose around 15k a month and every 4/5 months the board provide an injection. No facilities upgrades yet due to the lack of money

Records

Club    National Team

Aims for Next Season

Have a serious push for promotion.
