Hi Smurf, I think I'm now leaning more towards the latter of the two, simply because it will actually spend most of it's time within easy reach of a power socket so the battery life isn't as much of an issue as perhaps I'm making it out. Just for comparison purposes, this has just been put on sale: https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-aspire-3-a315-53-15-6-intel-core-i7-laptop-1-tb-hdd-black-10188926-pdt.html - how would it compare (if at all) to the two mentioned above? Would it hold it's own in terms of FM performance? thanks in advance!

In terms of performance for FM they will both be roughly the same. There's a slight advantage in the i7-8750h - but if you wanted to save a few pound the the i5-8300H is a good bet and would be similar enough performance wise. Overall the i7 is better though for general things.

To be honest, the only other game that will likely get played is The Sims, and that's only if my partner decides she wants to have a go...which she hasn't in the five years we've been together ha! It will mostly be used (aside from FM) for web browsing, Youtube, Sky Go, Netflix and the like. Dabble in the odd document on Word as well. The i5 should handle all of that shouldn't it? WiseRegista
Hi Smurf i have a budget of £500 and would like to play around eight leagues from four nations. Ideally with 4.5 - 5 * stars. I play in 2d only so don’t care about graphics card. Is this realistic or will I have to increase my budget or decrease leagues? thank you!

Mario Gori
Hard to read through 19 pages of posts, especially because I haven't bought a laptop in at least five years AND I've never played FM. My requirements: * Price is not a barrier, up to a point. * 3D is purely optional for me, but I want the text graphics to be as large, clear, and readable as possible. * I would like to make it as feature-rich as possible (number of leagues, etc.), except for 3D. * As lightweight as possible. Looking forward to your recommendations. I'm in the US, so use dollars if possible. Edited April 28, 2019 by Mario Gori

dublindiem
Hi. I am currently rocking a late 2013 iMac (3.4 Ghz Intel Course i5, 8GB 1600 Mhz DDR3, GTx 775m 2 GB) but will be making the move back to a Windows machine. My two main activities these days are using MS Office and playing FM 2019 (I used to do more creative stuff so the iMac had a use previously but not any more). Part of the reason for this change is because FM2019 doesnt do the full graphics settings on this machine and I want that back. Budget is circa €800 but I do need to buy a monitor as well so was looking at building my own. So this is my machine spec: AMD Ryzen 5 2400G with AMD Radeon RX Vega 11 Asus Prime B450M-A 2 x Kingston ValueRAM 4GB - PC4-21300 - DIMM Kingston A400 M.2 - 240 GB to be the boot/os drive. Is this a good balance of parts / performance for my overall budget? With a view for easier upgrading in the future (can add more Ram and a Graphics card a few months down the line. Thanks in advance.

Truly, thin & light with extra power in the battery for traveling/unplugged playing - this is what you're looking at https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/20MD0001UK-Lenovo-ThinkPad-P1_2400729.html If you want just light weight at it's chepaest then something like this https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/N580GD-DM230T-Asus-VivoBook-Pro-15-N580GD-DM230T_2358244.html Bear in mind this is more expensive but roughly the same (in terms of FM) https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16R112-255-MSI-GF63-8RC-255UK_2410406.html Again - more expensive but similar specs https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16R112-254-MSI-GF63-8RD-254UK_2410405.html I'd go for the cheaper one - similar specs - and it's only 19mm deep and weighs about 2kg. Battery power is about 4 hours without being plugged in, but for FM that may reduce to 2-3 hours use.

Then yes definitely. Or it could mean every league and division in the world with a large database. Then probably not. On that note - it's not possible to tell. As per the opening post, it is ambiguous to guess how well a game will run based off the specs, it's not just the processor, ram and graphics card, there are intermediate components that can cause bottlenecks, etc. On that note - it's a good machine and should cope well. It also comes with the monitor, which makes it very attractive. Hope that helps.

Tomafu
Hey, I’ve been browsing through this trying to see if I can make sense of some of it as I don’t fully understand computer specs... i have a budget of £800 (900 tops) ideally and would like to run around 8 nations with all leagues loaded, id like to use 3D more (was using 2d previously) and I generally like to get deep into a career and have a large pool of players to scout through. Fuzzy79
Hi, I’ve not got much knowledge on laptops. Been playing football manager for years and my laptop is so slow the game take forever to play. So decided to treat myself to a new laptop. I’ve got a budget of £400-£500. Which I know is low end. Any recommendations on what laptop to buy? Mainly being used for fm and will need it for the internet and word document. Cheers

kccircle
Not for FM, but wanted to buy the lad a first laptop to do school work using windows 10. PC World have laptops in there for under £200 which is really my max spend (he's 8) but they only come with 32Gb HD which will be half full with Windows and a couple of updates. Is there anything out there for a similar price with a bigger hard drive?

DamianJMcGrath
Hi. I appreciate I might be asking the same questions as other people, and I have genuinely read through the last 4 pages so apologies if I missed some great advice. (as a side note, maybe it's possible for some tech whiz to make a page on this forum where you select your priorities, i.e., portability, performance, etc etc, and then it makes a few recommendations?). Anyway, my details: Budget is £1,200. It'll be mostly (95%) of the time plugged in, on a desk, so battery life and portability aren't a factor. 17 inch would be good, but not essential. Apart from FM (obviously, I'd like that to run as quickly as possible, and I normally play 4/5 countries), I do a lot of Excel macros with pretty big data sets, Visio diagrams, video converting, and an occasional bit of SQL Server queries on reasonably large data sets. I'm going to guess that the processor will be a key one for me. I don't do any other gaming of any kind apart from FM - if I do start, it'll be strategy based games like FM (I have a XBox for "proper" games requiring a controller - any games on the laptop will be point-and-click stuff like FM, so I'm guessing the graphics requirements are relatively low). If anyone has any recommendations, I'd love to hear them. Thanks.
James_Fraser
Could this be down to your youth rating? How many staff members do they have? You can always have their manager arrange a friendly each week. I know this isn't the same.

Is there any way to ask the board for example to register the U23s in an U23 league? I'm managing Dulwich Hamlet, now in the Championship, and still haven't had a chance to register the U23s in any competition, only the U18s are playing. I can understand this is the case in the Vanarama south, but I would think a club in the Championship gets to have a team in an U23 league. Or are the U23 leagues fixed in the game and it's just never going to happen? A related problem is that I can't even get my assistant manager to schedule friendlies for the U23s during the season (he does in pre-season), so the only way to get them playing is to manually arrange a friendly for the U23's every week, which is a bit annoying. I have selected the option "arrange friendly every week" (or something in that vein) in staff responsibilities, but it's not working. I have this same issue in a different league. Not really a solution but when arranging friendlies you can select "arrange multiple friendlies" on the drop down menu and do 4 at a time if you tick the dates on the calendar. I usually just do as many as it will let me as the season starts. Before, I used to do them one at a time which is very tedious.

I don't have too many staff members in my U23's, because due to the lack of competitive matches, I send almost all of my U23 players on loans, and use the U23 friendlies only to build up match fitness for first team players who are backups or recovering from injuries. Could this be the cause? I do have an U23 manager and a couple of coaches though. Asking the U23 manager to arrange a friendly each week does not work, he just doesn't do it, and I have to manually arrange each friendly. 47 minutes ago, BlingFC said: you can select "arrange multiple friendlies" on the drop down menu and do 4 at a time if you tick the dates on the calendar. So selecting priorities based on performance for FM vs Call of Duty the performance criteria's would be completely different in terms of the 3 main ingredients, Processor, Graphics, and RAM. There is no magic formula. There are computers that are priced at £1000 and in one case it would be perfect for FM and another case it would be perfect for Call of Duty. But one wouldn't be fit for the other. MrPompey
You need to speak to the club researcher: 1. Does the club irl actually have an U23 side competing in a league? 2. If so the data files can be adjusted so that in the case of the above U23 friendlies can be automatically scheduled

The specs of that laptop look good. In my limited knowledge, I'm going to ask two silly questions. 1. Does it matter that the hard drive is 5400rpm? I'm sure I've seen some in the 7000s which I'd assume is better? 2. Are desktops better than laptops when it comes to getting high specs cheaper? A 17 inch laptop isn't very portable which I don't care about, but I guess it raises the question - do I even need a laptop? Are desktops and laptops the same when it comes to specs vs price?
