I'm seeing a lot of people are still considering the still very expensive i7 7700hq over the i5 8300H even...

Please don't, you are throwing your money away.. the effective speed is better by a good margin on the newer i5 and the price difference is significant...  There is little to no reason to go with the 7700hq tbh.

I tend to stay away from hp .. i never get on well with their native screens and find they overheat too easily.. but appreciate the suggestion.. you are right about the smaller ssd, but sata drives are super common and inexpensive, i'd rather fork out an extra £50 for one than settle for hardware that can't be swapped out like a dud screen on the hp

 

 

*just to note, hp are pretty damn good, this is just a personal issue i've had with them.. by all accounts, including people i've sold to, they are perfectly fine.

Yeh, heard some things in that regard.

Bottom line is you're buying a laptop on a budget, you won't get everything you want, and it won't always be rosey. Unless you want to fork out double that on the laptop - or even tripple that price to get something a bit more robust. 

You know the story with budget laptops, they are cheap for certain reasons.

im looking on getting a new laptop for footy manager 2020 so can anyone give me any suggestions on which one to get? Have around a £600 budget and would like one which will run the game smoothly

There are literally dozens of suggestions on this and previous pages for your budget... you are also being vague as hell.  What does smoothly mean to you?  1 league and minimum graphics and a small database? a huge database, full graphics and 14 leagues?  what else are you using the laptop for?

It's not great tbh.. it's an older gen chip and only a two core apu..

What is the generally accepted best CPU for a predominantly FM PC build these days? I'm currently toying between the 9700k or the 3700x.

Budget of around £1000 to include the following: CPU, Motherboard, RAM, M2 SSD

Already have a GTX 960 2GB graphics card, which seems to do the job for FM and other games at 1080p. Looking at M.2 for load and save times, and hoping to get a good overclock on the memory to help with processing times.

It will do fine... you again, won't run fm to the max with it.. the graphics card onboard is fine, it will run the 3d, but the cpu is a low power spec, which means fm will struggle at times and will undoubtedly get a bit warm with extended play..

 

The difference in quality of life you will get for that extra £150 or so is massive.. really really massive

For fm, intel still wins .. as far as amd have come with the ryzen line ( they are fantastic all rounders) the extra £50 you spent on the 9700k will be worth it in my experience with both...

graphics card is a bit of a bottleneck with such a powered system depending on what games you are looking at..

Sorry missed a few bits - 

GTX 960 would be fine for FM - but better pairing with as it might bottleneck for other games - but for FM it will be fine.

M2 SSD is good for loading up the system and general saving files. But has little or no impact for general day-to-day processing for FM - you won't see much gains in game speed - but nonetheless I wouldn't go for anything else either.

Thanks, that's the same opinion that I've been arriving at. Despite the multi-threading being of some benefit when processing lots of leagues, the day to day processing power is still limited by the single core max clock speed, and here Intel is still dominant. 

As for the graphics card, I know its a little under-powered when combined with that CPU, however I don't tend to play any AAA titles, and so far I've not encountered any limiting issues from it. If the time comes when I do, I'm more than happy to drop an extra couple hundred on something like a 5700 or 2060 (or the equivalents at the time).

Time to go raid the proverbial piggy bank and build myself a shiny new rig.

Thanks mate, think i'm gonna go ahead and order the one i posted... the only one there i'd be willing to swap it with is the last one you posted, but essentially i'd be paying an extra £150 for an extra 30fps on games i play....  and I think i'm more than happy to compromise on ultra settings for very high etc...

 

Appreciate the advice! Been a long time since i bought a laptop for my own actual use rather than other people!

I know the dilemma - it's definitely a hard spoke to spin when looking for yourself. 

The one  you have there is no problem at all - just your budget is 999.

Yeah ...technically the budget is £999 but the thought of buying the mrs something nice with the extra £150 saved to soften the blow of spending some of my winnings already is too tempting.... a quiet life is all i want, and a quiet life where i can sit back and play fm on a decent machine is all anybody needs :)

I have a HP, have played 712hrs of FM19 on it and it works well enough.
You are right about overheating though, it's a bit of an issue although it's only been a bit of a concern rather than it actually breaking down on me.

Sometimes I think people get too hung up on the numbers. Would I like a superfast machine with amazing graphics? Sure but people dismiss almost anything that isn't top notch far too easily.

And the laptop I bought myself today is the first new high range one I've had in about 15 years!..

 

I played fm19 on an old Lenovo ThinkPad with a 2nd gen low end i5 that could handle about 3 seasons before giving up the ghost ...

I agree completely about the numbers thing, but it's the equivalent of purchasing a car (don't do it mods) ... Any car will do the job, but you want to very best you can get :)

I've recently got back into Football Manager and looking for a laptop that basically, will solely be for Football Manager and no other games.

 

  • Budget: £300-400
  • Leagues: 4/5 Leagues (EPL, La Liga etc.) with a large database
  • Graphic Settings: I don't run the 3d graphic simulation settings for matchdays but want the loading to be prompt

I do like to download the badges, facepacks etc.

It's ridiculous the spec laptop you can get for that sort of budget these days.. that's an amazing lappy ..  8th gen i3 that boosts to 3.9ghz, 256gb ssd and 8gb ram for less than £400 .. mad

also, an update on my new laptop.. best laptop i've ever had, completely silent at all times, super fast, super powerful,.. would only suggest that anyone with an i7 8750H should 100% undervolt it to reduce throttling and reduce heat output.. it's reduced temps by 20c and i get an extra 40fps on most games.

also, an update on my new laptop.. best laptop i've ever had, completely silent at all times, super fast, super powerful,.. would only suggest that anyone with an i7 8750H should 100% undervolt it to reduce throttling and reduce heat output.. it's reduced temps by 20c and i get an extra 40fps on most games.

Yes, crazy spec! I often overlook i3's but on a lower budget, it's actually pretty damn good!

Hey everyone. I'm going to build a new desktop. And I've been out of the loop on CPU's for a handful of years now. What would be better for FM specifically (I don't play any other games on PC, just FM and use it as a work station),  an i9 9900k or a Ryzen 9 3900X? My current desktop is using an i5 6600K, and FM19 can get pretty slow after the first season with only a few leagues loaded. And trying to do a journeyman where I load everything, its insanely slow right out the gate.  FM16-18 were fine on that CPU. But FM19 kicks its ass. So I want to upgrade. Let me know which would be better. I'm assuming the i9 because of the single core power, but I know nothing about modern AMD. I stopped using AMD about 8 years ago.  Thanks in advance.

Yep you assumed right.. the i9 is king ... though can't help but wonder why you would go so high end for a game like FM .. seems like throwing money away

Figured going top of the line now will give me a bigger gap between upgrades. 7-8 years maybe. Little bit of "future proofing" in a way. Instead of upgrading roughly every three years.
