DS1874
Hi guys. Back with one last query. I have narrowed it down to 2 laptops. The only game I play is football manager otherwise the laptop will be getting used for browsing, Netflix etc. Not sure if a gamer laptop is required but which do you recommend out of the 2 below. https://www.argos.co.uk/product/3104570/ Or https://www.box.co.uk/81LK0039UK-Lenovo-IdeaPad-Gaming-L340-15_2934443.html

johnwalker
I asked for some advice a couple of pages back and @Gangor advised me that the new Ryzen 4600u could potentially be in my price range so I've been doing some research around the new Ryzen processors. My question is what's more important for FM; the base clock frequency or the number of cores? Secondly, but linked, does hyperthreading make a difference for FM? For example I see the 4600u has 6 cores (12 logical) clocked at 2.1ghz, whereas the 4500u has 6 cores, clocked at 2.3ghz. Could that potentially be better for FM or am I missing the point? Although I try and educate myself when making a big purchase I apologise if this is a dumb question. I've been asking my brother who's a software engineer and understands these things better than me, but he doesn't play FM Your help is very much appreciated. Well the 4600U is going to be better at running a lot of leagues as those threads let it do many calculations at once, but overall I expect it won't be massively worse. You'll be able to find a 4500U much more cheaply I'd expect, so likely that will be a good choice. If the price was the same though I'd go for more threads every time. I'm guessing the 4700U is still better than the 4600U as it has more cores rather than the extra threads? When they're more widely avaliable I will make a decision on which to go for, but I just want to make sure I'm understanding it correctly.

Yes it has 8 rather than 6 cores. the 4500u and 4700u have SMT disabled so you only get 6 and 8 threads respectively. The higher tier parts have it enabled so have twice as many threads. It should be noted that even if they are fully saturated (unlikely in any gaming workload) they still won't be twice as fast as the same number of non-SMT cores. The 4500u is going to be a fantastic choice at its price point - apparently it performs better than even the highest tier Intel u-series processors in many tasks. Yes, but still undervolted - I'm not sure what price point this is at - but undervolted means it will throttle. 19 hours ago, johnwalker said: I asked for some advice a couple of pages back and @Gangor advised me that the new Ryzen 4600u could potentially be in my price range so I've been doing some research around the new Ryzen processors. But the performance you see varies on the setup for example with matches - Quick Matches for instance (so for loaded but non-managed in leagues) it's are so fast anyway it gets to the point where it doesn't make that much more difference having more cores. If you use detail level to set more stuff to full match you'll start seeing betters gains for more cores, but of course will still be slower than by just not having the league loaded, or having it at a low detail level. Similar sort of thing with shortlisting the more / leagues players you have loaded the more benefits you can potentially see with more cores, however this is probably more than offset by the general slowdown from having more stuff loading as there's still a large portion of the game which is single threaded. In regards to best processors, as a general guide we tend to suggest using the following comparison site as a good gauge of the performance capabilities - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html Basic rule of thumb is the higher it is on the list, the better it is. You can edit it to show processors for desktops and also those that are considered 'archived' via the restriction options. Hope some of this is of use. thesharmz
Could someone give me an idea of how well FM20 is likely to operate on a new top spec 13" MacBook Pro? But (price considerations notwithstanding) the Ryzen 4000 series is a big improvement from the 3000 series. The difference is more than the usual generational improvements that you see with Intel. If the cost isn't prohibitive I'd recommend choosing a laptop with the more modern processors. To the point where the low power U chips are beating the performance optimised H chips: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-5-4500U-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-3550H/m1052299vsm718601. This suggests you'd be better off (for FM) choosing a Ryzen 4000 ultrabook (ie using a U-series processor) than a Ryzen 3000 gaming laptop.

Cheers thanks I'm with @Smurf on trying to get more modern tech. If you can get even an entry level CPU that was released this year it would be much better than something from 5 years ago that was then high end. If you have a clever friend (or the confidence to do it yourself) you should be able to get brand new parts within that budget. I'd suggest something like Ryzen 3 3300X, 8gb RAM (2x4gb), A320 motherboard (an MSI Max model to confirm compatibility), RX570 or GTX1650 graphics and an entry level 80+ Bronze power supply. I work that out to be approx £450 which should be less than your budget. Conceivably you might be able to find a custom builder who would make something like this for you at a bit of a premium. craigdrfc
Hi fellow FM’ers. Looking to get myself a new bit of kit so hoping for some guidance from those more tech than me. In terms of budget Im around the £550-£650 mark. Primary use is FM (dont play games on laptop other than that) alongside the usual bit of excel/word, net surfing etc. In terms of FM I usually play with around 6-8 countries open to some degree depending on my save idea, and would like ‘reasonable’ 3D graphics if I can fit it in. Happy to go to very top of budget if its good bang for buck. I could maybe stretch it by £50 if it made a real difference. Thoughts/suggestions really welcome please. Thanks. Thanks. https://www.box.co.uk/FX505DD-BQ121T-ASUS-TUF-FX505DD-BQ121T_2902781.html

It would run FM but it will be a poor experience.

GaryMac99
Looking at an iMac (Below) for the first time. I like to play with a lot of leagues loaded and a large database, would this iMac be able to cope with this? I’ve seen some comments about iMacs overheating etc so if anyone has any experience of playing FM on an iMac I’d like to hear your views. Also, I assume I’ll be able to convert previous saves over from my laptop using a memory stick? thanks https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/apple-imac-4k-21-5-2019-intel-core-i3-1-tb-hdd-10187947-pdt.html

The processor is not great - ranked 258 in this list https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html It's the i3-8100. Do you have to buy an iMac?
