Hi

I'm off work next week and hope to buy a PC off the shelf and take advantage of the 12mth Int.Free.Credit promo at Currys - I'm looking for something that will perform at a decent speed (running a decent number of Leagues for Journey Man type saves)- with a fair graphics capability, for other Sim Type games. (SimCities etc)

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs-317-c.html

A Desktop is my current preference.

Circa £1k -£1.2k is my budget range.

Any advice appreciated.

Not sure if you need a monitor/keyboard/mouse?

It depends on their cooling solutions - under ideal cooling solutions the laptops shouldn't throttle. But it's always a thing that can happen.

The CPU usage doesn't have to be 100% either, and it would be weird if it was - but that's not really relevant at all to any decision.

You want a good base speed - plus a good turbo boost speed - plus a higher TDP for less throttling.

I'm afraid at your price range - it's as good as it gets.

As I said the U processors aren't designed for heavy processing. Up to yourself.

ok, that seems logical.

My English ist unfortunately not so good. I didn't understand everything.

So what would be your suggestion for a good quality Laptop with good cooling solution and not as loud as a jet?

I'm still thinking about a ThinkPad P53 or perhaps Legion 5.

Both are of course more expensive than 500 Euros. But I would use the laptop also as a desktop replacement.

ThinkPads are designed to be thin and light and will have U processors - which will throttle.

I've already give you suggestions.

Hello lads, don't know if this is possible but are there any laptops that would run FM for £350. If so how quickly would they run. I don't know much about the RAM, processors etc so I don't know what to look for.

Cheers in advance

No - download the game on Steam as the Demo. Then activate it on Steam with your code from the disc.

Hi mate,

I’ve downloaded the game but I can’t see anywhere to put the code in? I’ve tried downloading the demo and then putting the code into steam but not working either - any ideas?

Launch Steam and log-in to your account.

Click the 'Games' tab from the top menu.

Now click on 'Activate a Product on Steam...' from the drop-down menu. (In this step you'll need to put in your FM20 Steam key)

Activate FM20 Steam Key

Now just follow the instructions to complete the process of adding and installing Football Manager 2020 on your machine.

For uni I'll be getting one of the 2020 Macbooks, not wanting to play any games on it other than FM.

I currently play on a mid-2009 iMac desktop, I have around 78,000 players in my database and 10 leagues loaded. The performance obviously isn't great, but with the match graphics turned down it's not too bad and is playable.

I assume the performance benchmarks for both the Macbook Air and Pro 2020 models are greater than my current system, but would there be a drastic difference between my iMac and the Macbook Air?

I don't mind having to fork out an extra bit for the Pro, but if the Air can run my game smooth enough, is the difference between the two drastic enough to warrant spending the extra money on the Pro?

Afternoon chaps,

Firstly, I think you all do a great job of helping each other make informed decisions which is why I am now asking myself! I am looking at potentially getting a new laptop. I only really use my current one which is painfully old and slow to play FM so it will be used for that and maybe the odd other game and then just the usual Netflix, Now TV, general browsing and social media. In an ideal world I usually like to add badge packs, face packs etc. so something that can handle that would be great, I only usually have a couple of countries playable with a large database and then view only on others so can’t imagine that being a huge problem?

Initially planned on not spending much at all although after reading quite a few pages it seems I’ll need to spend £600-£700 to get something relatively new and something that will last which I am happy to do, I would rather spend that now and have something that is good and that lasts rather than having reinvest sooner.

I’ve seen the following in thread, all of which look good -

https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=133W8EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB

https://www.box.co.uk/81LK0039UK-Lenovo-IdeaPad-Gaming-L340-15_2934443.html#DetailTop

https://www.box.co.uk/NH.Q87EK.002-Acer-Aspire-7-Gaming-A715-75G_2934480.html#DetailTop

https://www.box.co.uk/NH.Q8LEK.001-Acer-Aspire-7-Gaming-A715-75G_2934861.html#DetailTop

I guess my main questions would be...

1) Are these all good enough for what I would be using it for?

2) Is there enough of a difference between them to justify the cost? For example does the difference between the two Acer laptops justify the extra £100?

3) Are they something that is going to last a while and not something I’ll have to replace in 1-2 years?

Does anyone have an opinion on why they would or wouldn’t buy any of these laptops? And if you were to pick out of the 4 which one would you go for?

Also finally this may be really obvious and is the most stupid question of all, as I have FM on my current laptop will I need to purchase it again on the new one or would I be able to access from my Steam account for example?

Thanks in advance!

I very much wouldn't buy a Mac at this point given soon Intel based macs are going to be discontinued, leaving you in a situation where new software is likely to be run via emulation. So I'd either wait (but guess its going to be too long) or switch to a Windows machine

Specs of this are:

X Social: Basic computing on the go
X
Windows 10 S - you need to convert this to full Windows 10 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4456067/windows-10-switch-out-of-s-mode
AMD Athlon Silver 3050U Processor - technically it's good enough
X RAM: 4 GB - this needs to be upgraded to 8gb
X Storage: 128 GB SSD - it's quite small for todays needs and would require a larger hard drive

This fails on 4 out of 5.

Do you have a larger budget?

Thanks for coming back to me. I really appreciate this.

I could spend more and increase my budget to £500~

I assume based upon your feedback one of these two would be suitable?

I'd go with the one you have there https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-aspire-5-a514-52-14-laptop-intel-core-i5-256-gb-ssd-silver-10198869-pdt.html

The hard drive is still a bit small but easily rectified with an external storage - or getting an IT professional to install a larger hard drive.

I'd be very grateful if somebody could advice me on these laptops for running FM? The second linked has a U processor but has a turbo speed. Could the laptop overheat? Im a bit confused as to the processor speed and graphic capabilities of the 3rd. A G processor with an integrated card? My budget is around €900. Many thanks for any help!

Hey all,

I'm looking for a new laptop around £500, but can stretch to £600 for a better one. My current laptop is terrible at running fm at speed or anything really.

I have the two recommendations below, would the £600 one be a lot better than the £530 one? It seems that the cheaper one has a better processor but worse graphics, so was wondering if that would be an issue?

Depends on the processor model number. Each are different and have their own virtues. Some i5s are better than some Ryzen 5s and some Ryzen 5s are better thann some i5s.

What do you want out of FM - and how much are you willing to up your budget by?

Smurf!

I have a general question. What about the CPU matters the most for football manager games? Is it # of cores, the GHz, processor type and gen?

At first I thought: I never had anything above i5, so if I'm buying a new one it has to be at least i7. But does that even matter for fm? Should I be looking for as much GHz as possible or try to get the latest i with the latest gen?

I found a $1,700.00 laptop that has  a 10th gen i7 but its 1.3k ghz, is that bad (specifically for fm)? Another model has an 8th gen i7 but 1.8ghz and its $1,100.00. Then there is another option that has Ryzen 5 at 2.3GHz and its $970.00

I'm actually running an old FM game with 1 league, so I know everything I will buy will run, but I'm trying to figure out whats optimal.

Sorry if this has been asked before, its just there is a ton of pages. If you can answer or point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

Depends on how the game operates perhaps @EdL can chime in on the technical parts of what is better.

I did speak to @Neil Brock about this - and this was the answer he gave me

Quote

I spoke to someone and this is the jist of what he and I came to:

For how the game uses threads - it will create as many threads for playing matches and shortlisting as you have cores (including hyperthreads).

But the performance you see varies on the setup for example with matches - Quick Matches for instance (so for loaded but non-managed in leagues) it's are so fast anyway it gets to the point where it doesn't make that much more difference having more cores.

If you use detail level to set more stuff to full match you'll start seeing betters gains for more cores, but of course will still be slower than by just not having the league loaded, or having it at a low detail level.

Similar sort of thing with shortlisting the more / leagues players you have loaded the more benefits you can potentially see with more cores, however this is probably more than offset by the general slowdown from having more stuff loading as there's still a large portion of the game which is single threaded.

In regards to best processors, as a general guide we tend to suggest using the following comparison site as a good gauge of the performance capabilities - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html

Basic rule of thumb is the higher it is on the list, the better it is. You can edit it to show processors for desktops and also those that are considered 'archived' via the restriction options.

Hope some of this is of use.

Technically the game specs for PC require 2.2 ghz as the base speed - I typically don't recommend anything below this.

In regards to i5 or i7 - again some high end i5s are better than some low end i7s.

When you're looking at processors - as per the front page - this website has most listed and ranked https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html

And this page has the graphics cards ranked https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

If I am to select two similar ones that are ranked

image.thumb.png.b207520c858c2aae59032ac908f3583c.png

There's not a huge different in their position.

The 4600H has 3ghz (3000MHZ)

But the 8850H has a faster boost speed.

For FM I'd go with the one ranked 49 - as it has a faster base speed - more Cache and the Core/Threads are the same.

Say if I'm looking at a wider set of processors

image.thumb.png.1dfe3d3017ac946a815dfb7a41d14737.png

The 4600H is still ranked top.

But The i7-7700K is actually faster in both the base speed and the turbo speed.
Even though it has not got the same amount of Cores/Threads - it's still better for FM - in my book.

It's also designed to operate at a higher temperture. Meaning it won't throttle.

Compared to the one underneath it - it's TDP is 15 - and a base speed of 2ghz - it would need extrem cooling solutions to operate FM at 4100mhz. It will never get there.

It's not really which is better - they are all good - but they are all designed for different tasks and have different functions, some designed to be light and on the go and preserve battery.

Others not - others designed for heavy processing and design work.

Thanks Smurf, I would be looking for a fairly average FM setup, the 4 or 5 major European nations, maybe 12-15 or so leagues in total. I am happy with 2D. My budget would be in or around the price of laptops in my original post, €600-700.

Thanks Smurf, I would be looking for a fairly average FM setup, the 4 or 5 major European nations, maybe 12-15 or so leagues in total. I am happy with 2D. My budget would be in or around the price of laptops in my original post, €600-700.

Had a look and can't really recommend anything in that price range.

They're both the exact same.

  • Intel® Core™ i5-10300H processor
  • 512 GB SSD & 16 GB RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti - 6 GB
  • 144 Hz 15,6" Full HD-skärm (IPS-panel)

Thank you. That lenovo is out of stock in my local store. I have to choose between lenovo yoga slim 7 or asus Vivobook, specs already written above. Could either of these run fm while watching tv/sport? I only use 2d match engine.

I have no idea you'd have to link the specs to me.

Hi, I've been playing FM20 on low graphics since it came out and decided it's time to upgrade the laptop so I can play with good graphics in the 3d match engine and so the game runs a faster.

My budget is around £500 - £600, I've been looking at this (https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=8UD82EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB)  I'd only really use it for FM, general internet use and uni work.

I'm not the most clued up when it comes to laptop specs so thought I would ask on here if anyone has seen something better for a similar price?

Whilst that laptop has a good processor, it doesn't appear to have a dedicated graphics card, which would still then restrict the level of graphics you can use in the 3D match engine.

It's slightly over your £600 budget, but I have this one, and it runs FM very well, and should continue to do so for the next few versions at least (unless the graphics requirements massively increase any time soon): https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-nitro-5-an515-54-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i5-gtx-1650-256-gb-ssd-10205925-pdt.html

Hi, thanks for the input,

Do you play FM on full graphics in 3D how does this perform? how is the battery life and fan noise? because some of the reviews say they aren't the best, I assume they would be playing more demanding games though.

I've found this which seems to have a better processor ranking from the link in the first post, it has the same graphics card and better battery life for the same price. Is the AMD Ryzen processor series better than intel core i5?

I've not had any issue with the fan noise (since you can change profiles to make the laptop run with more or less power, and I've been able to run FM20 on the Silent profile without an issue with full graphics), and the battery life has been fine - 7 hours of solid play while I was travelling before I needed to charge it again. The fans only get noisy if you set it to the profile with full power, and then the battery drains faster, but I didn't find that profile was needed for FM.

From the specs given for the one you linked, it looks like the performance would be comparable.

Hi,

New to the forum, please be gentle. I'm a huge fan of the old versions of FM, specifically 06 and 08. I was wondering if anyone plays these versions on modern systems? I'm thinking of buying a modern laptop with no OS and installing Windows 7 on it, can anyone see any issues with this? Specifically looking at this https://www.ebuyer.com/947189-asus-m509da-ryzen-3-8gb-256gb-ssd-15-6-no-os-laptop-m509da-bq349

Would love to be able to play a huge in-depth version of 08 with a large number of leagues and full database.

Thanks for any help guys.

You could up the RAM to 16gb but not crucial at the moment.

The only thing you can do is reduce the settings for the 3D match.

Or buy an eGPU - https://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac/best-egpu-mac-3673105/
