Queen's Park: FM19 Youth Challenge

February 2021
Having been offered the role of Queen’s Park manager, the side currently bottom of Ladbrokes League 2 have serious issues having been touted for 4th at the beginning of the season. The chairman has brought me on board to usher in a new era focused only on youth and bringing through their own academy players. Luckily the club is only two weeks away from a youth intake, but the journey might be short-lived if I cannot get the club off bottom spot. Not that the current side has performed well enough so many of those youth may be able to walk straight in to the team. There will be a full club review at the beginning of each season highlighting facilities, staff and playing personnel.

The first point of business was to get myself an assistant. I settled on John Rankin, the 37-year-old former Manchester United youth enjoyed a great career in the Scottish top flight and brings with him the experience we need. For the moment, I decided against making any additional staffing changes as we don’t have the time for it to make any difference. Me and John need to work hard to fix the squad and how it plays as it is currently rather poor. The staffing will be addressed in the summer if given the chance.

Queen’s Park 2020-21
First Team Roster
Goalkeepers

  • Jack Wills (Scottish, 18, GK
  • Richard Moore (Scottish, 18, GK)
  • Connor Muir (Scottish, 18, GK)
  • Scott Ross (Scottish, 17, GK)

Defenders

  • Derek Docherty (Scottish, 18, DR)
  • Ross Park (Scottish, 17, DC)
  • Hugh Stevenson (Scottish, 16, DC)
  • Scott Carmichael (Scottish, 17, D/WBR)
  • Neil Barr (Scottish, 16, D/WBR)
  • Fraser McGinn (Scottish, 17, D/WBL)
  • Greig Gillies (Scottish, 17, D/WBL)

Midfielders

  • Ross Crawford (Scottish, 17, DM/ML/C)
  • Andy Miller (Scottish, 18, M/AMR)
  • Euan East (Scottish, 22, AMR/ST)

Strikers

  • Chic Fell (Scottish, 18, ST)

Players leaving after the first intake

  • Scott Rumsby (27), Lee Hamilton (25), Stuart Morrison (22), Kane O’Connor (20), Kieran Duffie (28), Kyle Hutton (30), Ali Smith (22), Kurtis Roberts (26), Ross McNeil (29)

At the current moment, this is where the squad is at. There are some competent players, but there is one who absolutely stands out above the rest. Ross Crawford is super talented, his determination and technical ability setting him apart from the rest. Hearts are already sniffing around him, and are likely to capture his signature with ease. Hopefully we can keep hold before the end of the season. Jack Wills is fairly decent in goal for this level, while Gillies and Carmichael will provide the wing play aptly. Andy Miller is a really poor player and our formation doesn’t adapt to wingers anyway so we may just release him.

The tactical approach I’m going for is the introduction of wing backs to the side. We’re also going for three up front because at the moment we don’t have enough central midfielders. The front will be inter-changeable but will revolve around Chic Fell who is the only full striker currently.

Ladbrokes League 2

  1. Cowdenbeath, 51
  2. Dumbarton, 47
  3. Montrose, 46
  4. Peterhead, 42
  5. East Fife, 38
  6. Berwick, 36
  7. Annan, 35
  8. Albion Rovers, 25
  9. Cove Rangers, 19
  10. Queen’s Park, 18

The season has been super poor for Queen’s Park. Having been predicted for a 4th place finish, the former manager just didn’t make the necessary signings and the club has suffered immensely. Cove Rangers, promoted last season, are struggling as equally, but that was to be expected. It’s a three-way battle with us and Albion Rovers for that last spot and a relegation playoff, something we really cannot afford. Our only two victories this season were against Berwick and Cove Rangers, who we still have to play at home too. The last time the club earned three points was in November, the aforementioned Berwick win.

Far harder than I really gave it credit, tenthree - most notably in terms of keeping players and actually getting money for those who do have to leave. Plus knowing you've gotta wait until March every time for recruitment is a nightmare.

20.02.2021 – Ladbrokes League 2
(2nd) Dumbarton vs. Queen’s Park (10th)

The first game of my potentially short reign saw us make the journey to Dumbarton. They were flying high currently, and were hot off a thankful 3-0 demolition of Albion Rovers and also unbeaten in eight games. It was going to be a tough match, we knew that, but despite that I handed debuts out to many of our young youth roster.

XI; Jack Wills, Ross Park, Hugh Stevenson, Stuart Morrison, Stuart Carmichael, Fraser McGinn; Ross Crawford, Kyle Hutton, Ross McNeil, Euan East; Chic Fell

First Half
- Neil McLaughlin opened the scoring with a flicked header early on
- Jack Wills made four first half saves
- The woodwork also rattled twice in the first half hour

Second Half
- The second half was super slow starting up and for twenty minutes neither side did much
- Euan East got us level with a fine finish from a right-hand cross of McNeil
- We sunk pretty quickly though, Graeme Saunders converting another header from a corner kick
- Euan Smith finished us off with a long range freekick

Extra
- Albion Rovers secured a victory to pull away from us
- Cove Rangers were also beaten though, leaving us within reach still

(2nd) Dumbarton 3 – 1 Queen’s Park (10th)
Neil McLaughlin 5, Graeme Saunders 76, Euan Smith 79; Euan East 71

27.02.2021 – Ladbrokes League 2
(10th) Queen’s Park vs. Montrose (3rd)

Having lost my first game in charge, I wasn’t entirely confident in our chances against another high-flying side, but Montrose looked beatable at the moment. They had only one win in their last five, and had recently dropped points late on to Cove Rangers and Albion Rovers. This put us in good spirits to try an equal style last minute heist. We named an unchanged side, with three players, including Chic Fell, putting in superb training sessions during the week.

XI; Jack Wills, Ross Park, Hugh Stevenson, Stuart Morrison, Stuart Carmichael, Fraser McGinn; Ross Crawford, Kyle Hutton, Ross McNeil, Euan East; Chic Fell

First Half
- Fell and East made early chances but couldn't convert them
- Montrose limited to long range efforts
- We had 60% passing accuracy in the first half - many passes going awry

Second Half
- We made minor changes, and one change, for half time after a quiet first 45
- Montrose hit the post early in the period
- Fell hit the post late on
- Euan East broke away in the final few minutes of the game and slotted the ball home coolly to put us ahead

Extra
- First victory in fourteen matches for us
- Albion Rovers won again, but Cove Rangers lost meaning me escaped bottom spot

(9th) Queen’s Park 1 - 0 Montrose (3rd)
Euan East 86

-----

Ladbrokes League 2 – end of February
1.       Cowdenbeath, 54
2.       Dumbarton, 53
3.       Montrose, 46
4.       Peterhead, 46
5.       East Fife, 42
6.       Annan, 38
7.       Berwick, 36
8.       Albion Rovers, 31
9.       Queen’s Park, 21
10.     Cove Rangers, 19

Not a lot of change in the end of month table, the biggest movers being us getting out of the bottom spot, and Dumbarton making great strides on closing down Cowdenbeath for the automatic promotion spot.

March 2021
We had finally made it to youth intake day, and as expected we took in a varied batch.

Goalkeepers
- Michael Cowie (Scottish, 16, GK)

Defenders
- Ryan Tait (Scottish, 15, DR)
- Michael Campbell (Scottish, 15, DC)
- Stuart McKenzie (Scottish, 16, DC
- Steven Mitchell (Scottish, 15, DC)
- Jonny Finlayson (Scottish, 16, DL)
- Fraser Henry (Scottish, 15, DL)
- Connor McIntosh (Scottish, 16, DL/C)

Midfielders
- Brian Boyd (Scottish, 16, DM/MC)
- Tam O’Halloran (Scottish, 15, MC/AML)
- Scott Holmes (Scottish, 15, AML)
- Andy Ferguson (Scottish, 16, AMC)
- Alec Stewart (Scottish, 16, AML)

Strikers
- Dylan Ferry (Scottish, 16, ST)
- Owen Scott (Scottish, 16, ST)
- Brian Johnston (Scottish, 16, ST)

Our intake had been fairly diverse, giving us a whole new raft of options across key components of the field. Our new strikers are all fairly decent and will go straight into the first team, while Johnston could be one of the best players since Crawford to make the step-up. Cowie in goal could also prove to be a great option, and I’m considering bringing him straight in. Fraser Henry is also really talented, though our incoming centre backs aren’t that great, and will need to show us more. Some re-training may come in handy.

Youth Recruitment Top Five

  1. Brian Johnston
  2. Owen Scott
  3. Michael Cowie
  4. Fraser Henry
  5. Dylan Ferry

06.03.2021 – Ladbrokes League 2
(9th) Queen’s Park vs. Albion Rovers (8th)

Our key battle against Albion Rovers had finally arrived, and with a game against 7th place Berwick a week later, we had to secure a win in either of those to stay ahead of the game. With Albion having beaten Berwick and Cove recently, they were on a mission to snake their way from the bottom zone by bashing those below them. We made a few changes after the intake, finally naming an all Queen’s Park XI, with Johnston, Ferry, McIntosh, Boyd and Cowie all coming in to the side. And every game we play that we have Crawford keeps us going. The kid is super talented.

XI; Michael Cowie, Ross Park, Hugh Stevenson, Connor McIntosh, Stuart Carmichael, Fraser McGinn; Ross Crawford, Brian Boyd, Brian Johnston, Dylan Ferry; Chic Fell

First Half
- Albion dominated us, and John Balde had put the visitors ahead with a fine finish
- Albion had all of their on-target shots (5) for the whole match in the first half
- We suffered two yellow cards in the opening five minutes

Second Half
- It took us just four minutes to get level, Dylan Ferry netting on his debut
- Brian Johnston bagged the first brace of the season and is now joint top scorer with Euan East (2)
- Late goals from Gillies and Stevenson ensured it was the first time in club history that four different Queen’s Park academy players scored in a single game
- We ended up with five bookings – our highest single game total this season

Extra
- The attendance of 1,782 is the highest at home for the club this season and a record for the division
- The victory took us closer to Albion just above us, but Cove Rangers kept the pace beating Berwick 2-0
- Dumbarton have gone top of the table
- First time this season the club has scored more than twice in a single game

(9th) Queen’s Park 5 - 1 Albion Rovers (8th)
Dylan Ferry 49, Brian Johnston 65, 68, Greig Gillies 77, Hugh Stevenson 90; John Balde 31

13.03.2021 – Ladbrokes League 2
(7th) Berwick Rangers vs. Queen’s Park (9th)

Here was another crunch tie for us, taking on a Berwick side that had haemorrhaged big losses to the important teams around them in the last two games and are now without a win or a goal in four matches. We decided against making any changes as all the players had earned their place from the demolition of Albion Rovers, though a last-minute fitness issue forced our hand and saw Scott replace Fell. Berwick lined up with a strange formation that consisted of no wide players, was this the reason they had been losing consistently lately?

XI; Michael Cowie, Ross Park, Hugh Stevenson, Connor McIntosh, Stuart Carmichael (Neil Barr), Fraser McGinn; Ross Crawford (Tam O’Halloran), Brian Boyd, Brian Johnston, Dylan Ferry; Owen Scott

First Half

- Two yellow cards in the first five minutes again saw us change the tempo early on
- Twenty shots on goal between both sides in the first half with zero on target
- Both sides registered lower than 50% for passing accuracy

Second Half
- Dylan Ferry, stand in captain, opened the scoring with a fine finish after the keeper spilled a save, but there was a definite foul by us during the build up
- Ferry bagged another after a sumptuous cross from McGinn on the left found his head
- Debut appearance off the bench for Neil Barr
- First clean sheet for Michael Cowie, and fifth this season for the club

Extra
- Hearts boss Stuart McCall was present to keep tabs on Ross Crawford
- Unbeaten in six games in a row against Berwick now, whilst this was the sides first double of the campaign
- Cove Rangers lost 2-0 at Peterhead, while Albion Rovers lost 1-0 at home to Cowdenbeath

(7th) Berwick Rangers 0 - 2 Queen’s Park (9th)
Dylan Ferry 65, 72

03.04.2021 – Ladbrokes League 2
(10th) Cove Rangers vs. Queen’s Park (9th)

Our massive survival deciding game was up next, a trip to equally struggling Cove Rangers. There wasn’t much I could do to prevent the side being nervous for this one, but they didn’t have any reason to be. I genuinely feel like we have enough points now to stay out of the relegation trap playoffs. Sadly, Carmichael would miss this one because of suspension, so Barr would come in for him despite not being fully fit either. Chic Fell also returned to action for us as he seeks his first goal for the club.

XI; Michael Cowie, Ross Park, Hugh Stevenson, Connor McIntosh, Neil Barr, Fraser McGinn; Ross Crawford, Brian Boyd, Brian Johnston, Dylan Ferry; Chic Fell (Andy Miller)

First Half
- Neil Barr, on his first start, is sent off after just 23 minutes
- Sean Brown puts Cove ahead after that, a simple tap in after Cowie saved from close range
- Dylan Ferry nabs equaliser with fine header from cross of substitute Andy Miller
- The rain seemed to make life tough as the ball wasn’t moving well

Second Half
- We were poor from the off and Ryan Farquhar made us pay with a low drive from ten yards
- Sean Brown bagged a tap in that our defence will not want to see ever again
- Blair Yule becomes the second red card casualty after a lunged tackle and then dissent
- Fraser McGinn brought us back into the match with a delightful solo effort from the left
- We hit the post late on but couldn’t force an equaliser

Extra
- Albion Rovers were beaten soundly 4-2 by East Fife
- 90% of our shots were on target but we just couldn’t hit the back of the net
- Cove Rangers are only two points behind us now

(10th) Cove Rangers 3 - 1 Queen’s Park (9th)
Sean Brown 25, 53, Ryan Farquhar 46; Dylan Ferry 37, Fraser McGinn 63

10.04.2021 – Ladbrokes League 2
(9th) Queen’s Park vs. Cowdenbeath (1st)

Carmichael was back to fitness which was good considering Barr was now unable to play after his dismissal last week. Stuart McKenzie was also in line to make his debut in place of Ross Park. We were currently three games without a win against our opponents so confidence wasn’t high, especially considering that they had reclaimed top spot. We needed to prevent ourselves from slipping and pull a win out of somewhere today. Chic Fell failed a late fitness battle and was replaced with Euan East.

XI; Michael Cowie, Stuart McKenzie, Hugh Stevenson, Connor McIntosh, Neil Barr, Fraser McGinn; Ross Crawford, Brian Boyd, Brian Johnston, Dylan Ferry; Euan East

First Half
- We prevented any shots on our goal for the first 30 minutes
- Brad Smith ripped us apart on the left, and crossed for Ross McFarlane to side foot home in front of Cowie
- Crawford hit the post with a freekick from thirty yards
- We managed no other efforts in the first half

Second Half
- Owen Scott replaced East at half time
- McFarlane almost beat Cowie from the corner spot with a fluke shot
- Brad Smith grabbed their second when he broke our defensive line to nail it past Cowie
- We only managed one shot in the second half

Extra
- Berwick won, meaning they are now safe
- Cover Rangers scored a last-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Montrose
- Albion Rovers lost, meaning its now a three-way battle for survival
- Today was the 12th time this season the side have failed to score

(9th) Queen’s Park 0 - 2 Cowdenbeath (1st)
Ross McFarlane 28, Brad Smith 77

17.04.2021 – Ladbrokes League 2
(5th) East Fife vs. Queen’s Park (9th)

With only three games of the season remaining, anything was still possible in terms of how us bottom three would finish. East Fife have enjoyed a fairly average season so far, though a couple of results going their way could see them sneak the playoffs. Owen Scott was the only change, coming in for Euan East.

XI; Michael Cowie, Stuart McKenzie, Hugh Stevenson, Connor McIntosh, Neil Barr, Fraser McGinn; Ross Crawford, Brian Boyd, Brian Johnston, Dylan Ferry; Owen Scott

First Half
- Michael Cowie made four first half saves in the opening twenty minutes
- Danny Wilson opened the scoring, Cowie having saved from Dowds but only into the path of Wilson to strike home
- We managed no shots in the first half

Second Half
- Danny Wilson bagged the second when he was on the receiving end of a cross from the right-hand side
- We pulled one back when Carmichael fizzed in a superb cross for Owen Scott to lash home for his first career goal
- McIntosh gifted a penalty to Dowds, Wilson stepping up with no issue to secure his hat-trick
- Carmichael turned provider again for our second, hitting the same cross for Scott to grab his second of the game
- We couldn’t find an equaliser as we succumbed to defeat once more

Extra
- First match this season with zero bookings for either side
- Stuart McKenzie failed 76% of his attempted passes
- Cove Rangers lost 3-1 to Cowdenbeath while Albion were tanked 5-1 at Peterhead
- Seems highly unlikely now that Albion will go down, but not mathematically impossible

(5th) East Fife 3 - 2 Queen’s Park (9th)
Danny Wilson 38, 55, pen60; Owen Scott 58, 68

24.04.2021 – Ladbrokes League 2
(9th) Queen’s Park vs. Annan (6th)

Our last home game of the season would see us host Annan, who had enjoyed a fairly comfortable season by their standards. And with a very real possibility of playoffs for them, they would be giving everything they’ve got against us. I decided against any changes – this was it for us now. We did however make a shock announcement before the game that former player Garry Kenneth would be joining us as U18 manager, a vital role that needed filling for next season.

XI; Michael Cowie, Stuart McKenzie, Hugh Stevenson, Connor McIntosh, Neil Barr, Fraser McGinn; Ross Crawford, Brian Boyd (Tam O’Halloran), Brian Johnston, Dylan Ferry; Owen Scott (Andy Miller)

First Half
- It was a frantic first half with both sides striking hard
- We took the lead when Carmichael pinged a hopeful ball into the box, Brian Johnston mixing with a defender to somehow bundle it home
- We doubled our advantage when this time a similar cross came from the left in McGinn, Brian Boyd slicing home his first goal for the club
- We got to half time with two injured players, but they shook it off

Second Half
- A drab second half was devoid of any real life but we were happy with that for time being
- Leon Murphy pulled one back when he met MacArthur's cross into the box
- Aidan Smith equalised with a terrific solo effort that left Cowie stranded
- We made two substitutes as O’Halloran and Miller came on for Scott and Boyd
- Stuart McKenzie scored us the goal we desperately needed when he headed home from a Miller corner
- We won a vital match and showed true quality today

Extra
- We ensured our survival for another season with this win
- Cove Rangers lost 5-2 at Dumbarton to ensure they would be involved in the relegation decider, while Albion Rovers also lost 3-2 to Montrose, but ensured survival due to the Cove result
- We made a game high 445 passes, though only ensured 62% of them found their target

(9th) Queen’s Park 3 - 2 Annan (6th)
Brian Johnston 26, Brian Boyd 37, Stuart McKenzie 80; Leon Murphy 71, Aidan Smith 79

01.05.2021 – Ladbrokes League 2
(3rd) Peterhead vs. Queen’s Park (9th)

In a match that would now prove to be a dead rubber for us, though technically we could still finish 8th, we made no changes to the side who beat Annan. Peterhead had also secured their playoff spot, so now we were just playing for pride and stats before the rebuild goes on.

XI; Michael Cowie, Stuart McKenzie, Hugh Stevenson, Connor McIntosh, Neil Barr, Fraser McGinn; Ross Crawford, Brian Boyd, Brian Johnston, Dylan Ferry; Owen Scott (Tam O’Halloran)

First Half
- Owen Scott put us ahead after breaking an offside trap, and in turn scored our quickest goal of the season at 01:11
- Adam Martin headed the home side level from a Hutchinson corner
- Neat corner work allowed Ferry to set up Brian Boyd to lash it home from six yards and restore our lead
- They pulled back level through Rory McAlister and his 15th goal of the season
- Brian Johnston had a shot saved, but the resulting deflection allowed Owen Scott to fire home into an empty goal

Second Half
- Ross Crawford scored his first goal for the club with a sublime twenty-five-yard freekick
- Brian Boyd saw red again for the second time this season with a double yellow pair of offences
- Tam O’Halloran replaced Owen Scott to allow us to shore up the midfield
- We really struggled for possession today but took our chances

Extra
- Ross Crawford became another youth player to score his first professional goal for the club
- Sadly, Albion Rovers also won today meaning we ended the season in 9th
- Cowdenbeath finished top despite both them and Dumbarton losing on the final day
- Defeat for Peterhead today meant they were leapfrogged by Montrose who won 6-0 at Berwick

(4th) Peterhead 2 - 4 Queen’s Park (9th)
Adam Martin 12, Rory McAllister 33; Owen Scott 2, 34, Brian Boyd 30, Ross Crawford 47

Season Summary 2020-21
In all truth, while I was in charge for only roughly a quarter of the season, I still feel responsible for how it ended up. Cove Rangers could have made us pay, but they didn’t do enough in their games, plus they lost to us too at a pivotal moment.

I genuinely believe that the youth intake saved us – the goals from Scott, Johnston and Ferry earned us valuable points, while Crawford and Boyd struck up an important relationship in midfield.

In terms of the league finish, there was one hell of a gap in quality between us and the sides who finished outside the playoffs. We have a lot of work to do to bridge that gap potentially.

OVERALL BEST ELEVEN
Fraser McGinn is the only youth player to break into the Best Eleven and we are super proud of him. Our goal is over the next few seasons to get all the spots taken up by youth players of our academy.
