How to instruct player to make a specific cross more frequently?

Recommended Posts

I’m managing Notts County and we use a wing style of play. 4-2-4 WB wide. Naturally we depend a lot on crosses.

There is a specific cross that I want to make happen more often. My right winger Hawkridge hits an early cross toward the far post and connects with my left winger Harriot angling in from the left at full speed (Harriot has pace). It’s very effective because defenses typically are edging toward the right where the ball is advancing, which leaves the “backdoor” open for the left winger’s attack.

Anyway, I instructed the right winger to hit his crosses to the far post, but that made him do it all the time, often with nobody there.

Is there any more specific way to tell the right winger to look for the left winger making a run when we are counter attacking? It’s probably beyond the capability of the game, but I’m new so maybe I’m missing something.
