Three games have been played since the last update and despite both losing there 100% records, Norway and Turkey still occupy the top two slots. Turkey sit top having not lost whilst Norway have lost one. Macedonia and Slovakia have switched places, Macedonia having drawn all three games since the last update. We have overtaken Malta to climb into fifth and now Malta are the only team in the group without a point. We are still the team with the least goals scored and the most conceded, but at least we have now scored.

Squad For Macedonia And Turkey Revealed

2.6.05

San Marino have made just one change to their squad for the upcoming World Cup Qualifying games at home to Macedonia and away at group leaders Turkey.

Despite some players carrying injuries, they have been kept in the squad with the hope they will be fit for the games and the only change sees Andy Selva return to the squad, Massimo Mariotti making way for him.

The players are coming off the back of a mixed last couple of games, the defeat of Malta giving them an almighty high and the thrashing from Slovakia lowering their confidence. The general feeling is that they are going to try and uphold their pride in the next couple of games.

The squad is listed in full below. Numbers show caps/goals <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

With the return of Andy Selva, upfront partnering Daniele Conti, the players were confident that we could earn ourselves a point. Fabio Bollini and Paolo Cupi had not recovered from injuries as it was hoped that they would, so Elia Gerini and Davide Selva deputised for them.

The Macedonian side were without the now-retired Artim Sakiri, match-winner last time we met, and this gave us a nice boost just before the game. I was hoping to get a hold on the match early on, but when Trayanov sent a long shot just wide of the post in the first minute, I felt there might be another heavy defeat in store.

We did get into the game however and Mirco Zanotti, goal-scorer against Malta, had the first attempt at goal for us that Kostovski did well to save after it took a deflection off Lazarevski. We immediately had another chance after Conti flicked Francioni's long ball to Selva but Selva's fierce shot was turned behind for a corner. The corner was only half cleared to Conti and he wasted no time in hitting a shot from outside the area but his shot, unfortunately, went sailing over the crossbar.

Raffaele Moroni was next to come close to opening the scoring when he hit a free-kick from about twenty-five yards out but it shaved the outside of the post and went behind. This turned out to be the last chance of the half but I was more than happy with the effort shown and I was confident it would continue in the second. I was proved correct.

The second half begun with another chance for us to take the lead but, having controlled Alex Gasperoni's pass brilliantly, Zanotti could only hit a shot straight at goalkeeper Igor Kostovski which Kostovski saved and held well. Moroni then went on a brilliant run from the wing, cutting inside to get into the area, which resulted in a shot that Kostovski did well to get his fingertips to.

Zanotti saw his header from the corner saved well by the Macedonian goalkeeper and then Kostovski kept out both Chiaruzzi's low drive and Andy Selva's powerful header to keep the visitors in the game.

Time was running out and we were finding it near impossible to get past the outstanding Kostovski, in the end his performance earning Macedonia an undeserved point and himself the man-of-the-match award. We could take a lot of confidence from this performance however, having completely dominated the visitors from pretty much start to finish.

With the visit to Turkey just days away, we could go into the match with the knowledge the we have the ability to create chances, chances that we will need to take if we are to get anything out of that game.

San Marino So Close To Upset

11.6.05

San Marino 0-0 FYR of Macedonia (World Cup Qualifying (European Section) Group 3)

The San Marino fans that watched their side draw 0-0 with Macedonia at the Olimpico Stadium in Serravalle will have been more than pleased with their team's performance in an entertaining World Cup qualifying match.

San Marino easily had the better of the chances and only an man-of-the-match performance from Macedonian goalkeeper Igor Kostovski kept the scores level.

The supposedly more 'famous' names of Macedonia were pinned in their own half for long periods of the game by the San Marinese, dubbed 'less than glamorous' by Macedonia before the game. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Paolo Cupi was now available to come back into to defence, replacing Davide Selva to partner Alex Gasperoni in centre of our defence. A defence which shipped five goals last time we faced Turkey but Sanli Tuncay, who scored a hat-trick in that game, was unavailable due to injury so we were hopeful that we would not concede another five goals this time around.

We got the game underway and having conceded in just over five minutes last time we faced the Turks, we wanted to get off to a better start in Istanbul. We somehow managed to get off to a worse start. Gerini took a throw-in that went straight to Emre. He showed good control to take the ball in his stride and he cut inside to move towards the area. He hit the ball from around thirty yards out and saw the ball fly into the top corner of the net for the opening goal in just the second minute.

The pressure that Turkey had started to put us under grew and grew and they took near total control of the match. Both Hakan Ãœnsal and Ãœmit Karan scooped shots over the bar before Giardi was forced to stop a header from Ãœmit Karan entering the back of the net. Akin Serhat came closest next for the home side at it started to become obvious that they would score a second very soon. However Turkey continued to miss good opportunities and both Ãœmit Davala and Hamit Altintop missed the target from inside the area.

We gave away possession from a goal kick that had resulted from another of these missed chances and this time we were made to pay. Serhat played the Tugay and he helped it along to Ãœmit Davala. Ãœmit Davala spotted Ãœmit Karan in the area and Ãœmit Karan out-jumped Alex Gasperoni to head Ãœmit Davala's cross into the back of the net for two-nil and his first international goal.

We now had a mountain to climb if we wanted to rescue a point from the match but we were making it too hard for ourselves by giving possession away too often. Emre came close to getting his second before Turkey did manage to score a third. Sonkaya played the ball down the line to Ãœmit Davala and he then crossed the ball in from the left wing. Gerini had the chance to cut out the cross but the ball flew over his head, Altintop running in behind him. Altintop showed great control before advancing on Giardi and slotting the ball past him to make it three goals to nil.

Just two minutes later, just before half time, they made it four by scoring a second in quick succession. Altintop, having scored moments ago, was growing in confidence and he stole the ball nearly straight from our kick off. He played the ball into the box but Cupi managed to head clear, but only straight back to Altintop. He was forced back under pressure but he still managed to chip the ball into Ãœmit Karan in the area. Ãœmit Karan attempted to volley the ball in from a tight angle and then wheeled away in celebration as it found its way into the back of the net.

We managed to keep it down to four until half time but at the start of the second half it became clear that Turkey wanted more goals, changing their formation from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3. They had no luck early in the half, however, and we even managed to get a shot of our own. Zanotti won a free kick after Emre fouled him, the shot coming from Moroni as he fired in the free kick, but the ball went just wide.

This seemed to anger Turkey somewhat, perhaps realising that another goal would dent our confidence so much that we may stop attacking. They wasted no time in notching their fifth of the game. Altintop won a free kick before he was substituted, his replacement Hasas Sas taking it. He tried an out-swinging ball from the corner and Serhat jumped higher that Gerini to force a header into the back of the net.

This goal didn't stop Turkey pressing for more and Ãœmit Davala twice came close to getting a sixth before Giardi produced a fantastic fingertip save from a low, long-range drive by Emre. Sonkaya then put a half volley into the side netting before Oktay hit a left-footed volley over the bar. Turkey were still peppering our goal with shots, fortunately for us they were not managing to find the target on every occasion.

Giardi kept out their last effort towards the end from Sergen and it was us who had the finally effort of the game, when Paolo Cupi headed Della Valle's pin-point cross into the hands of goalkeeper Reçber Rüstü. We didn't score before the final whistle however, and it now meant we had conceded eleven goals in our last two qualifying game outside of San Marino.

San Marino Outclassed By Turkey

15.6.05

Turkey 5-0 San Marino (World Cup Quals (EUR) Grp 3)

Turkey made it a home and away double against San Marino, this time beating the by five goals to nil.

There were no surprises in Istanbul, as goals from Belözoglu Emre (2), Ümit Karan (26, 40), Hamit Altintop (38) and Akin Serhat (63) helped a far superior Turkey side overcome the San Marinse with a resounding victory.

The game went true to expectations as San Marino were, in the end, nowhere near a match for their opponents Turkey. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

*Cheers Dave, glad you like the layout and are enjoyed the story. Hope you continue to do so

The results from the last two rounds of qualifying now mean that Turkey, Norway and Slovakia have started to pull away from the other three teams in the group. Turkey, still unbeaten, sit top of the group by three points from Norway who sit a further two points clear of Slovakia in third. Then follows Macedonia on fourth, three points clear of us in fifth with Malta sat bottom with just the two points. Malta are the only team in the group without a win and we are the team with the least goals for and most goals against.

Norway And Malta Squad Announced

2.8.05

Two changes have been made to the San Marino squad for their upcoming World Cup Qualifying games at home to Norway and away at Malta.

Injuries to Marco Gasperoni and David Rapanelli mean that Fabrizio Pelliccioni and Simone Celli have been called into the squad for the first time, with Celli having been moved fomr the under-21 squad.

Going into the Norway game after a heavy defeat at the hands of Turkey, there is not much confidence from the San Marinese fans that Norway bcan be beaten. However, having already beaten Malta at home, hopes are high that they could do the double over them by beating them again.

Having lost to Norway five-nil in our first qualifying game, we were not confident of getting a positive result from the return fixture here. However, we had kept two clean sheets in our last two qualifying games at home, so we did have something positive to look to. Mirco Zanotti picked up a slight injury in the warm up and this allowed Simone Celli to come into the midfield to make his debut.

When we met last time we had gotten off to a pretty good start before we started gifting goals to the Norwegians, a start that I wanted us to replicate in this match. Unfortunately, however, we were unable to start well and we conceded the opening goal inside ten minutes. Trond Andersen headed a Solksjær cross towards goal that Giardi did well to parry, seeming to have stopped the visitors from opening the scoring. Andersen himself reacted quickest though, and was left with the simple task of putting the ball into a relatively open goal.

I believed that this would be the start of another thrashing but I was given hope when Andy Selva tested Kristiansen with a powerful header after a good ball from Paolo Cupi. Andersen then came close to doubling his goal tally, putting a shot horribly wide in the end and then Krirstiansen was tested again, this time by a header from Alessandro Francioni.

Norway seemed to realise that we had improved since the last time we had met and they acted on this realisation to try and get themselves another goal. Giardi saved a low drive from Riise after a good cross from Bergdølmo and then both Carew and Andersen sent shots sailing over the bar. Norway were visibly frustrated by their own wasted chances, and we capitalised on this by scoring an equaliser. Ronny Johnsen fouled Bollini, who took the resultant free kick himself. The ball went towards the edge of the area, and Kristiansen started to come for the ball before realising he wasn't going to get it. Selva got the ball and hit it on the volley and as Kristiansen was so far off his line, the volley found its way into the back of an unguarded net.

We managed to keep out efforts from John Arne Riise and goal-scorer Trond Andersen before half time, meaning we went into the break on level terms with our opponents. I knew that Norway would come out to try and get an early goal to take control of the game and I instructed the players to try and go for an early goal of their own. It was us who managed to score one. Della Valle took a throw-in to Andy Selva but as Selva tried to turn towards goal Johnsen brought him down. Raffaele Morini took the kick and he struck the ball sweetly to curl it around the wall and into the top right-hand corner of the net, the goalkeeper unmoved.

I decided that we should try and go for more goals as I didn't feel we were defensively strong enough to hold onto the slender lead we had, and I was rewarded as we went three-one up just minutes later. Francioni played the ball forward, just above Johnsen who couldn't get his head to the ball, and Celli found himself through on goal. He drew the goalkeeper before sliding the ball to his left for Andy Selva and he rolled the ball into the net, crowning a wonderful move with his second of the game.

For some reason, after this third goal we went on the defensive and my theories on our weak defence were at first dispelled. Gasperoni was making some fantastic tackles and Giardi a couple of good saves from two John Carew headers, but we eventually did concede a second goal. Bakke hit the ball out to Kah on the right and Kah flighted the ball over Della Valle beautifully to allow John Carew to be one-on-one with Giardi in goal. This time Carew got the better of Giardi and put the ball into the back of the net to get his side back in the game and within a minute they were back level.

Carew came forward after winning the ball from our kick-off, but Bollini executed a fantastic sliding challenge on him to win the ball. He played it back to Giardi to hack it clear but he sliced his kick straight to Andersen. Andersen headed the ball to Solli who played it to Riise, getting well forward on the left. Cupi beat Carew in the air from Riise's cross but his header went straight to Andersen. He played it to Carew and this meant he was again one-on-one with Giardi, again getting the better of him to score his and Norway's second in as many minutes, bringing the scores level with ten minutes left.

Having felt sure we were going to hang on for a win just minutes earlier, I now felt that we would probably not be able to hold on for a point having been rocked by the two quick strikes from Carew. We got to the ninetieth minute still on level terms and saw that there would be four minutes added on. In the first of these four minutes, Norway looked to rob us of victory by grabbing a fourth, seemingly decisive, goal. Bergdølmo had the ball just inside our half and he played it to Eirik Bakke on the right wing. Bakke crossed the ball first time to the far post and found Solli steaming forward in an attempt to meet the cross. Solli beat Bollini in the air with a running jump to power a header into the back of the net, his first international goal, a cruel blow to us so late in the game.

We didn't let our heads drop, but I wouldn't have blamed the players if they had. They had given it everything they had in this game and had been so cruelly robbed in injury of getting anything from the game. Or so I thought. There were three minutes of injury time left, and it took us just one to get back on level terms, showing unbelievable fighting spirit. Conti took the ball from kick-off and played it back to Francioni. Francioni took a couple of touches before spreading the ball left to Chiaruzzi who controlled the ball well before holding it up, waiting for support. He knocked it into the path of Della Valle further left, crossing the half way line, and Della Valle ran with it. Norway invited him forward and he took the invitation, cut in on the defender's blind side and chipped the ball into the area to Daniele Conti. He had started the move and would finish, albeit at the second attempt. Conti initially hit the ball on the volley with his left foot but Kristiansen did well to turn it away. It fell straight to Conti, who this time hit it with his right, and the net rippled as he drilled into the back of the net.

Having been seemingly denied a point from this game we had pulled ourselves straight back into the game with an immediate equaliser, in the ninety-second minute. We had been denied a point and now we denied Norway three. Or so we thought. Football is a cruel game sometimes. There were only thirty seconds left when Bakke bore down on the area with the ball. He lifted it forward to one of Norway's substitutes Thorstein Helstad and Helstad showed great calmness to coolly head the ball into the back of the net.

The final whistle blew straight after. We had gone from being robbed of a point in the ninety-first, a big low, to robbing Norway of three in the ninety-second, a big high, to being robbed of a point again in the ninety-fourth, an even bigger low.

Norway Made To Fight

10.9.05

San Marino 4-5 Norway (World Cup Qualifying (European Section) Group 3)

Norway waltzed into the Olimpico Stadium anticipating a comfortable victory over unfancied San Marino, but they were made to fight all the way and only a 94th minute winner saw them take the match by 5 goals to 4.

However, all did not go to plan and despite Trond Andresen (7) giving the visitors the lead, Norway found themselves trailing 3-1 at one stage thanks to goals from Andy Selva (38,59) and Raffaele Moroni (47). John Carew (77, 78) got two goals towards the end to spare the Norweigan blushes and when Jan Gunnar Solli (90+1) scored Norway seemed to have an unlikely victory. However, San Marino continued to fight and Daniele Conti (90+2) seemed to have again shocked Norway by grabbing a point. It wasn't to be and Thorstein Helstad (90+4) snatched all three points at the very last.

A highly motivated San Marinese side can now go into Wednesday's game away at Malta with a lot of confidence and most are confident of at least a point after tonight's performance. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

*Without trying to give to much away, after our performance against Norway, you have no idea how disappointing it was to watch this match or to write the match report*

----

When the qualifying group was drawn, both our fans and the fans of the Maltese national team will have noted this one down as one of two they would have a chance of winning, with the other being the return fixture. Indeed we had won the meeting, but this time Malta were favourites due to being at home.

I wanted us to get a good start, first of all to quieten the fans, and also to knock some of the confidence out of the home side. We didn't manage to get a good start however, in-fact, we managed to get off to the worst start imaginable. Fenech somehow managed to get in behind our defence in just the second minute, a major lapse of concentration on our part. He wasted no time in smashing the ball into the top corner of the net, giving the Maltese side a very early lead.

Raffaele Moroni, our captain, decided to take it upon himself to get us back into the match with a superb run, going past four players, to get to the box. He beat one more man to send him one-on-one with the keeper but he scuffed his shot horribly wide of the goal. Michael Gatt hit an effort wide of the goal to try and extend Malta's lead before Conti tried to get us back in the game, but his shot missed by a mile.

We then lost Conti to injury, bringing on Marani in his place, and we were getting no breaks at all in the game. This was proved when Malta went two goals up in injury time of the first half, injury time that was there because one of our players had to leave the pitch. Marani's first action of the game was to get booked and to concede a free kick, in almost exactly the same position from where Moroni had scored against Norway. Unfortunately Kevin Scerri did exactly what Moroni had done, and curled the ball brilliantly into the back of the net.

I told the players to go all out at half time, to go 'gung-ho' to get something from the game, and we immediately put the home side under pressure. Selva set up Marani who had a header saved well by Debono before we managed to pull one goal back to get in the game. Marani picked up a throw-in from Della Valle and crossed to the far post from the left. Marani's cross was scuffed slightly and is bounced off the top of the post to Andy Selva, who scored one of the easiest goals he will ever score.

This was the lucky break that we had needed, to pull ourselves back in the game, but were not to have any more luck at all. Apart from bad luck, two major slices of bad luck. The first was to come straight away when Alex Gasperoni was sent off, for his second yellow card, rather controversially. I took off Francioni to bring on another defender in Selva, but I told the players they should still go for it. That was a mistake on my part. Gatt scored from the free-kick that had come from the sending off to make it three-one.

The defence started to fall to pieces and none of our players could seem to string any passes together. Giardi took a goal kick straight to Michael Gatt and he picked out Fenech with a superb pass. Fenech found himself through on goal, behind a seemingly non-existent defence, and he hit a fierce shot into the back of the net for his second of the game.

Our second slice of bad luck was to come in the final minute of the game. I had made all three substitutions and we were down to ten men when Della Valle picked up an injury that meant he couldn't continue. This meant we were down to nine men, with just three defenders - one of who had been brought off the bench. Credit to Malta however, they took full advantage of our major disadvantage. First Kevin Scerri got his second goal of the game when he hit fierce shot into the back of the net after a wonderful team move. Secondly, Scerri played Michael Farrugia through on goal, as there was plenty of space and Farrugia volleyed home the second injury time goal to give Malta a six-one win.

We had been extremely unlucky in both of our last two matches, although the result for this one probably didn't show it. We had conceded four injury time goals in the last two matches, but we had started to score on a regular basis. You have to take some sort of positive after defeats such as these.

San Marino Suffer Heavy Loss

14.9.05

Malta 6-1 San Marino (World Cup Quals (EUR) Grp 3)

In a surprisingly one-sided encounter, Malta defeated San Marino by six goals to one.

San Marino were unlucky, having only nine men at one point, but goals from Joseph Fenech (2, 72), Kevin Scerri (45, 90), Michael Gatt (66) and Michael Farrugia (90) gave the scoreline a decidely one-sided look with Andy Selva (54) replying for San Marino. Alex Gasperoni was dismissed in the 63rd minute.

The match was especially notable for the lack of fight shown by San Marino after they fell three-one behind, as they had expected to be the equal of their opponents. There is just one qualifying game left at home to Slovakia to leave an impression on the final group standings.

Squad Announced For Final Game

6.10.05

Three changes have been forced upon San Marino as they head into their last game of qualifying at home to Slovakia.

Alex Gasperoni is suspended for one international game after his sending off against Malta and Michele Giacobbi and Manuel Marani are both injured. Their replecaments in the squad are Marco Gasperoni, Davide Casali and Davide Biordi. All of those players are uncapped but Gasperoni has been in the squad before and Biordi has two goals in four appearances with the San Marinese U-21 setup.

Coming off the highly disappointing defeat at Malta, San Marino will be looking to put that out of their minds with a good performance in their final game of qualifying to give them so hope for the future..

The squad is listed in full below. Numbers show caps/goals <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Davide Casali came in to make his first international start due to Gasperoni's suspension and Mirco Zanotti came back into the team after his recovery from injury, taking the place of Simone Celli. We had lost 6-0 away at Slovakia, but this was irrelevant in my opinion and I told the players I wanted to try and end with a positive results.

We started well and it seemed that the players wanted to end the qualifying campaign positively as well and, but for a superb tackle from Marian Stano, Daniele Conti would almost certainly have opened the score. However, one pinpoint long ball later, Németh found himself through on goal and with plenty of time to give the Slovakians the lead inside five minutes.

It was hard to tell whether we would let our heads drop and cave in or whether we would continue on from our good start to try and get back in the match. Thankfully, it was the latter of the two, and we turned the score around almost immediately. Bollini turned on the ball nicely and played it along to Casali. Casali crossed the halfway line and played the ball forward, looking for Zanotti. Zanotti got his head to the ball to flick it on to Selva and Selva beat the goalkeeper to the ball to make it one-all.

We didn't sit back after that however and, within a minute, we found ourselves two-one up. Moroni took a free kick on the halfway that went forward to Casali. Casali flicked it to Chiaruzzi and Chiaruzzi volleyed the ball across the face of the goal. The Slovakian defence was static and Andy Selva stole in to head the ball past a helpless Jan Hrncar in goal to give us the lead.

After the kick-off, it became obvious that both teams were willing to go all out to get victory. We were pressing forward looking for more goals, Francioni testing Hrncar with a good header, and Slovakia were pressing forward looking for a way back into the game, with Németh jinking past Casali before hitting a shot that was well saved by Giardi. Németh then had two more good chances to level the score before Andy Selva had a shot cleared off the line from Strba.

Both Selva and Moroni came close of giving us a three-one lead before Selva made history by completing his hat trick on the stroke of half time. Bollini took a throw-in to Moroni and Moroni turned well and got to the by-line. He checked back before standing the ball up for the cross, looking for one of our forward players. Meszaros was beaten in the air by Andy Selva and Selva headed the ball down into the bottom corner of the net, leaving the keeper with no chance. It was his tenth goal for San Marino and his fifth in the last three international games.

Surprisingly it was us who started the second half better, still coming forward looking for more. We had been here before though, against Norway, and had ended up losing so, I didn't want us to go all out for a fourth. We nearly found one however, through Daniele Conti, but his spectacular overhead kick shaved the post and went wide.

Meszaros then tried to get Slovakia back into the game with two good efforts, but on both occasions the angle turned out to be too tight and his shots flew wide of the target. Németh had one more chance for Slovakia before Conti had the last effort of the game when he hit a shot high and wide of the goal, but it didn't matter as we had run out three-one winners.

It was a fantastic team performance and we could now look forward to the draw for the qualifying campaign for Euro 2008, with a bit more confidence and self-belief than we had going into this campaign.

San Marino Claim 'Famous' Victory

15.10.05

San Marino 3-1 Slovakia (World Cup Qualifying (European Section) Group 3)

San Marino's manager has urged fans and players not to get too carried away after their remarkable 3-1 victory over Slovakia.

Despite falling behind to the visitors through a goal from Szilard Németh (5), San Marino claimed their superb victory thanks to a first international hat-trick from star player Andy Selva (12, 17, 45). These three goals allowed twenty-nine year old Selva to become the first ever player to get into goalscoring double figures for the San Marinese national team.

San Marino did what they had hoped to do by finishing the qualifying campaign on a high with the win, their second win in the group, and they can now go into their friendly with Latvia in April of next year with hope of a better all-round performance in qualifying in Euro 2008. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Firstly, this story is good enough. You don't have to buy readers with Scotland finishing above England and putting them out of the competition icon_eek.gif.

Secondly, "COME ON THE PADDYS" icon_biggrin.gif.

Thirdly. Andy Selva is GOD icon14.gif and I think we need to check his passport. Are you sure he's qualified to play for San Marino? Selva sounds Brazilian icon_wink.gif!

I'm really enjoying this story. Good luck with qualificiation for Euro 2008, although I get the feeling that WC2010 is a more realistic prospect.

Aye, keep it up icon_smile.gif

Took me 8 years and my 4th qualification campaign with the Faroes to qualify for a tournament, but it'll be worth the wait when you get there icon_wink.gif

England were nobodies compared to Scotland in that game too icon_cool.gif

*Jimbo - First, I didn't know about the whole Scotland - England thing until I checked at the end. But read below to find out something rather harsh.

Second - Hurrah icon_smile.gif.

Thirdly, according to the game, Selva was born in Italy and has duel nationality* icon_biggrin.gif

*Skiddaw - yes, yes it does*

*Terk - again, look below for the harshness*

*Binny, if so roll in WC2010!!*

*Glamdring - if that is the case, my first should be Euro 2012 icon_cool.gif*

Thanks for reading all, glad you are enjoying it

WORLD CUP 2006 QUALIFYING - EUROPEAN SECTION - PLAY-OFFS

Below is the table for all the second placed teams throughout the nine groups. I have no idea how the table was worked out, but they all played six games. Scotland are the unlucky team who finish ninth on goals scored, meaning they miss out on a playoff spot.

Aye, that 9th team missing out on the play-offs stuff is harsh! I didn't realise that in my game either until I had completed the group with Faroe Islands and then looked and found we finished 8th in that table, above Austria on goals scored thanks to our final game draw icon_biggrin.gif

EURO 2008 QUALIFYING DRAW

(Number in brackets denote Countries official FIFA Ranking as of 17.3.06)

Group One is our group for the upcoming qualifying game. Spain will be favourites despite not having qualified for the World Cup, but if they slip up then Belgium will be ready to take the group's top spot. Again, we have been drawn with Macedonia who will battle for third spot with Slovenia, leaving us and Kazakhstan battling out for last. Honestly, I think we could finish fourth if we continue with our good form. In a strange coincidence, Kazakhstan, Slovenia and Spain were all in the same World Cup qualifying group.

Slovenia (63) 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

Spain (27) 0 0 0 0 0 0 0</pre>

We will start with a home game against Slovenia before a daunting trip to Spain. We have four away games at the start of 2007, which could cost us little. Within our group, we have never met Slovenia or Kazakhstan. I think we can pick up at least 10 points from this group and hopefully finish fourth.

Group Two is a particularly weak group with only Turkey seemingly able to win the group. However, Romania and Wales will be looking to redeem themselves after poor World Cup qualifying performances. Andorra, Azerbaijan and Georgia are likely to contest the other three places in the group.

Group 3 has seen France installed as favourites with both Finland and Serbia & Montenegro likely to fight over the play-off place. Belarus will probably finish in fourth place, leaving Liechtenstein and Luxembourg to finish in fifth and sixth.

Czech Republic were undefeatd in qualifying for the World cup and England will be looking to bounce back after failing to qualify. Neither team faces much competition and Albania, Bulgaria, Estonia and Moldova will contest the other four places.

Squad Announced For Latvia Friendly

23.3.06

Just one change has been made to the last squad for the squad that will take on Latvia in a friendly at Olimpico Stadium.

Davide Casali, who played so well against Slovakia on his debut, has been forced out of the squad for a whole year due to damaged cruciate ligaments and has, therefore, been replaced by Michele Giacobbi. Still in the squad is right-back Fabio Bollini who has just secured a move to Argentinian giants River Plate. He is being allowed to play despite River being locked in a tough league campaign.

With the groups stages for Euro 2008 having been drawn, this game is San Marino's only warm-up game before they get underway against Slovenia.

The squad is listed in full below. Numbers show caps/goals <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

San Marino And Latvia Battle Out Goalless Draw

1.4.06

San Marino 0-0 Latvia (Friendly)

San Marino held Latvia to a 0-0 draw and were unlucky not to get the win.

Daniele Conti had the best chance of the game in the second half, but blazed his shot over the bar. In the end, it was the defences from each team that came out on top.

It was, however, a good warm up for the qualifying games coming up for the San Marinese. They can now sit back and enjoy the World Cup before getting down to business in Group 1 of the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Three changes have been made to the San Marino squad for the first two of their European Qualifying games. They will face Slovenia at home before travelling to mighty Spain.

Alex Gasperoni, Federico Gasperoni and Michele Marani have all withdrawn through injury and this has allowed three replacement players to be called into the squad. Stefano Molinari and Stefano Toccaceli have been introduced to the squad for the first time and Gabriele Muratori has been recalled having been capped twice last qualifying campaign.

San Marino will want to get off a decent start however, they don't have the easiest of games to get the qualifying campaign underway.

The squad is listed in full below. Numbers show caps/goals <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
