1200px-Federazione_Sammarinese_Giuoco_Calcio_svg.thumb.png.93fd2ee3dc6a3d194cfd926ab0b1c82b.png

The challenge is to win the World Cup with San Marino - an enclaved microstate with a population that wouldn't fill some of the bigger stadiums out there - just 34,000.

On the surface, this seems basically impossible.  In past years of the challenge, you had help as there was a Sammarinese club playing in the Italian league system - San Marino Calcio.  This club ceased to exist after the 2018/19 season and a new club has formed - Cattolica Calcio San Marino.  The problem with this new club from this challenges point of view is that the default nationality for youth products is Italian.  This is to mirror real life (as per the Italy Head Co-Researcher - see my post below), but makes the challenge impossible.

From our combined efforts in the editor, it looks like the nationality of the youth intake is hard coded - so to attempt this challenge, we must either resurrect/play as San Marino Calcio in the editor - or resurrect them and rename them Cattolica Calcio San Marino.

Due to the unique issues with the challenge this year, you are welcome to either:

  • install these 2 files - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1917811437 which will see Cattolica Calcio San Marino playable in Serie D - the club will produce Sammarinese youth intakes (thanks to @parkin90 for this).  This needs to be used with this Serie D database -  https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1920497135 .  Please do install both files and not just the Serie D database, otherwise you'll get Italian youth intakes.  It may also be worth downloading a San Marino League database and enable that league also (link below);
  • use this file https://drive.google.com/open?id=1y2Vxs9-K7dkXDU4ucZwRBLGKIhnYT91T - which has switched San Marino Calcio in for Cattolica (inc. staff and players) and holidayed until they are promoted into Serie C (note - you also may need the San Marino League active - link below to the database - worth doing anyway);
  • use this file which has switched Cattolica staff/players to San Marino Calcio - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1916855633 - and holiday yourself until they get promoted to Serie C and therefore playable (note - also may need the San Marino League active - link below to the database - worth doing anyway);
  • use the same file as above - and then make your own switch in the pre-game editor to put San Marino Calcio into Serie C and therefore playable (note - also may need the San Marino League active - link below to the database - worth doing anyway);
  • make your own change in the pre-game editor to put San Marino Calcio into Serie C - or change SMC to Cattolica and play as them - as long as you only un-extinct the club,  swap them with Cattolica and then switch one team out of Serie C to make room for SMC or CCSM.  No rep changes or changing player or staff attributes.  You are welcome to start with Cattolica's staff/players, or have an empty "Phoenix" club.  It might be also worth having the San Marino League active (link below);
  • use this Italian leagues to L7 database -  https://fmsiamonoi.forumcommunity.net/?t=61480284 - un-extinct San Marino Calcio in the pre-game editor, make them amateur status and put them into Prima Categoria Marche Girone B (I removed Le Torri Castelplanio as they are joint bottom as at 11/12/19 irl).  Don't select "Add players to playable teams" and start a true "Phoenix" club with no players or staff.  The edited file is attached to this post and is the work of @FMRevolution and you can check out the Facebook group here https://www.facebook.com/groups/643019436087539/ ;
  • you can also attempt the challenge by taking charge of a San Marino League club - the one by claassen on the Steam workshop has an early editor bug (some opposition teams don't register their players in the summer - but do in the January window - unfortunately this seems to continue each season you play) and he hasn't been online to correct.  You can try one of the others - but these are untested.  This one is by the same author as the Italian L7 database above: https://community.sigames.com/topic/504807-fm20-fusion-db-campionato-sammarinese-san-marino-league-19-20-kits/ .
  • If anyone was waiting for a claassen Serie D database, he's deleted his European Leagues Pack thread and I'm assuming is not producing content for FM20.
  • I've personally gone back to FM19 as I enjoy the ME more - I'm happy for people to use any older versions of FM.

If you grow the club, particularly the youth system, hopefully you'll then have a national team which has enough world class talent to lift the ultimate prize in football!

Rules and Instructions

You can have a go at this challenge by using any of the methods above.  It is contrived this year, but it's the only way we can make this challenge even attemptable!

To have the option to manage the San Marino National Team you MUST select the "Advanced" option on the database size screen; and then go to nations, San Marino and make sure "load all players of nationality" is ticked or you'll be unable to take control of the National Team. This must be done when selecting leagues at the start of the save.  You have the choice of managing the National Team from the start of the save, or hold fire - I'll leave that choice down to you.  It's safe the say at the start of the save, the National Team will be poor and you'll struggle to win games.  If you don't take charge of the National Team from the start, you are allowed to add a temporary manager as national team boss, retire him and then apply (and hopefully get the job) yourself.  Either that, or wait for the job to come open naturally.

Don't use the in-game editor or genie scout.  No changes in the pre-game editor other than those noted above to make the challenge possible.

I'm not too worried about your manager's profile - after all International experience in San Marino doesn't mean you are Frank Lampard!

You are welcome to use whatever tactics you want - not everyone is Rashidi, after all.

Don't quit without saving though, even in important games.

You can approach the rise to Serie A as you see fit.  To make this tough challenge harder, you are quite welcome to go for a Youth only challenge, sign Sammarinese players only - or sign whoever you want.  At some point, the club will need to focus on developing Sammarinese talent from the youth system to feed the National Team.  Developing the youth system is tough early in the save, as the club's finances aren't great.

As noted above, you don't have to manage San Marino Calcio/Cattolica Calcio San Marino.  You can manage a San Marino League team (you'll need a custom database).  You will have the chance to access European football earlier than with Cattolica/San Marino Calcio, and the club will grow perhaps a little quicker if you do - but the talent won't develop as well as playing in the Italian league system.  If you want the toughest version of the challenge - a Youth only challenge with a San Marino League team might be it!  Last year someone managed both San Marino Calcio and a San Marino League team (two managers both controlled by one person in one save), and that's something I did also - it does add interest, but takes longer to play - I would be happy for this to be done again.

Please post updates in this thread - tag me with a screenshot as evidence and I'll update achievements.  A few targets on the way are in the posts below, hopefully to keep things interesting as the World Cup is some distance away at the start of the save!  Likewise, tag me if you are bowing out, and I'll make a note of your final status - getting the club to Serie A would still be a massive achievement after all!

Do feel free to ask questions/get advice and offer encouragement to others!  I can already see we have a little community here with all the help with databases and trying to make this challenge possible. :)

Good luck and enjoy!  The road is long, but it's a fun challenge!

fyi -  reload date is June 30th 2020 (Last playoff game is June 6th so save June 5th and holiday till June 30th until they show up)

Big ask but it might be an idea to upload a save with the team already promoted to save people having to reload?

I worry that we've seen the last year of being able to do this challenge - unless this is something that the devs want to change.

Usually (and I haven't moved a day, yet) the youth team, when full of grey players, shows the nationality of the players that *will* come through. As you can see - they are Italian at present:

7ab7caa53b513a20f3b733f0723271d6.png

Whilst Cattolica Calcio SM are classed as 'Sammarinese' they actually play in Cattolica, Italy. This is what, I think, influences the main nationality of the newgens. Whether that is something that SI can/want to/is realistic to change, I don't know.

I'd love to be proved wrong though!

Usually the nationality of the regens mostly comes from the city its based in, in this case Italy.

There may be some sort of hardcoding to bring through san marinese youths such as happens for some 'ethnic' clubs like croatia berlin,  fc Romania. However with these clubs the grey players are the nationalities that will come through and since the above are italian. You could wait for the full version and simply edit the database in the pregame editor for a town in San Marino.

That's a pain - I assumed as the club was classed as Sammarinese, the youth products would mainly be that nationality :(  - thanks for checking that @_Ben_.  Not sure if SI would want to edit such a small club - and not in a playable league - but I'll raise a bug report.  If not, I'll either ask a Serie D database creator to tweak - or do it myself and upload somewhere.  I had been trying to reload to get them into Serie C, but no dice yet.

Got a response from the Italy Head Co-Researcher:

"Hi! Very glad to see this comment.

Anyway, the club moved (not for financial reason indeed) and now set in Cattolica. Unfortunately they are not attracting the best u16 from San Marino and Italy is set as newgen nation on purpose to reflect irl situation. Just some examples: only a couple of youngsters are from San Marino, coming from last season; out of 36 players just called up for u17/u19 euro qualifiers none coming from Cattolica SM."

So, I think the way forward is to wait for the editor and make the change - or perhaps wait for a custom Serie D database and edit that to make youth products Sammarinese - doesn't match real life, but for the purposes of the challenge, very much needed!

This would be the first time I play FM (or CM) without attempting SM challenge... very disappointed, don't like using the editor but this seems the only way to go and very much in the spirit of the challenge (it's still San Marino!). As I'm absolutely useless with the editor, an edited file with Cattolica Calcio SM producing sammarinese regens will be very much appreciated in the future :). Titani will never die!

how do you take over the andorra national team?

I would assume there should be enough players if you make sure to load them all.

What I was referring to is that FC Andorra start this year in the 3rd tier of Spanish football which is playable right away. Making it almost the same as what the San Marino challenge was when the club started in Serie C.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was messing around in the editor tonight and running a season until youth intake to see what I could get to happen with the newgens. The "based nation" in San Marino, so changing that doesn't help, and the only other option I could find was just to change the city they were based in from Cattolica to Serravalle, which is the city in San Marino where Calcio was based. However, I was unable to get Cattolica to produce Sammarinese regens :( I'm guessing that either I have no idea where to find it, or the ability to change the nation for youth intake is something inaccessible in the editor.

There's good news though! Calcio is still in the database, and by making them un-extinct, I was able to play with them and get an intake full of Sammarinese regens. Granted, in the DB, they have no players, staff, etc, so it's a little trickier than just swapping Calcio for Cattolica in Serie D. But still, there's a path forward/we're not dead yet.

Excellent work, @boknows83 - I was going to move them to Serravalle tonight in the editor, so a shame that doesn't work.

My other idea was to see how a club like Croatia Berlin is set up in the game to pull in Croatian regens and attempt to replicate with Cattolica.

But, if Calcio was resurrected, that would actually be kinda cool.  If they are a completely blank slate, that would actually be an interesting twist to the early part of the challenge.  Signing loan players is pretty easy in Italy, so I think you could put a team together easily enough, although depth would be an issue.  I guess early save realism wouldn't be there - but heck, we are trying to win the World Cup with San Marino here :D...

claassen is back with a European leagues pack - which will include Serie D and San Marino League:

I tried a Serie D database from Steam and found issues - so re-started the save with his work and found it of excellent quality.  So, I might wait for his database - and try to tweak it.  I've asked a question in the Editor's section of the forum of if we can make the change to Cattolica - will report back with any responses.

Had quite a bit of success with this challenge last year and always one of my favourites to do, desperately checking here and the workshop for a Serie D database, shame we're going to have use the in game editor to be able to physically do this challenge.

I did a dual Calcio and San Giovanni save in FM19 - got to Serie A with Calcio and the Europa League group stages with San Giovanni.  Could have kept going I suppose, but got excited by FM20!  I can see the development centre being a good tool for this challenge, that's for sure.

Claassen's league packs is a WIP - his work is brilliant, so I'm going to wait on him and then try to edit to allow a mostly Sammarinese intake, or even bring back Calcio from the dead.  Will have a play in the editor tonight - never used it before - so hopefully it's idiot proof :lol:

From memory (and it has been a while) I think you need to move the stadium to San Marino as opposed to the nation of the club to get different nationality of newgens. I could be wrong, it's been a while since I tried that but it may be worth a go

Thanks - that's a big help.  Someone above tried changing the city they were based with no joy - I'll give this a go tonight.

I'm really wanting to get started, tempted to do the Andorra challenge instead, who knows when there will be a Serie D league brought out, although it does seem a little easier than this one, don't want to have to try and wait for san marino to be promoted, it could take them years, IRL they're currently at the bottom of serie D

Wouldn't mind resurrecting the old San Marino Calcio via editor. Anyone knows if italian clubs can request a B team like Juventus  Zebre U23 as per announced new feature? Would be a massive extra for this challenge, though I've tried to play as a Serie A club and can't seem to have that option available.

OK, have edited Cattolica Calcio San Marino in the pre-game editor - which has successfully been picked up by a new FM save - the team is back at San Marino Stadium :).  The only thing I'm not sure about is it says moving back to the Giorgio Calbi on 1/1/1900 - might have another look later.  Anyway - am currently on holiday until May - and hopefully will then see some Sammarinese youth players.  The dog's just going to take me for a walk - should have finished by the time I get back - fingers crossed!!

I was doing a little research when holidaying for the 2nd time (no joy again - other than 3 players) and I saw someone speculate that something is hard coded.  I couldn't find anything different in the editor - but I did find it very clunky.

Anyway, I did manage to get San Marino Calcio back from the dead and into Serie D Group F.  Pretty sure I can add the players from Cattolica (took a screen shot of them).  I will holiday tomorrow to check the youth intake nationality, but it should be OK.

I would say the current plan for me is to wait for claassen's Serie D database and then edit that to remove Cattolica and bring in San Marino Calcio with Cattolica's players - as I don't think I would be capable of making Serie D, with all the Girones playable.

In the meantime, you can always have a little go in the San Marino League for a season or two and see if you can tick off any of the achievements - but in terms of the challenge, I think it would be tough long term to do it that way.

Pretty much the only reason I have brought the last 3 FM games is for this challenge! I have created an update which has swapped Cattolica out for the old San Marino Calcio, I have moved over all the backroom staff and players as well. The update is currently on the Steam workshop - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1916855633

Great work!  Bringing back Calcio is the only answer to the problem I think, unless someone sees something in the editor I missed.

What league have you put Calcio in?  I put them in Serie D Girone F in my quick test last night, but the league wasn't playable.  I was vaguely thinking about putting them into Serie C to make them playable now without having to holiday - might be a bit artificial, and I don't know if m(any) of the current Cattolica players would cut it at that level...  Having to start from scratch would be a challenge, but it might add a twist to the challenge!  I'll think on it on the drive home from work - thoughts welcome!

I've just done a straight swap with Cattolica, so in my updated they are in Serie D Girone F. I've holiday'd forwards 3 times without the mighty Titani getting promoted! I agree with you about it being a bit artificial, and I've previously enjoyed leading San Marino from the bottom to the top, however in the absence of a Serie D update it looks like inserting them into Serie C may be the only way, unless I get lucky on the next couple of holidays...

As soon as the game was released, I tried 15+ times and Cattolica never got promoted - so hopefully you have better luck than me!

Claassen's Serie D could be 2-3+ weeks away - but it depends what order he does the leagues in.  I would imagine it's one of the more complex ones because of all the girones, so he might leave it until near the end.  Don't want to pressure the guy as he almost quit during the FM19 life cycle and we don't want to lose such a great resource for the community.  The advantage is his work is amazing.  Last year, people used a different Serie D database (me included) and it wasn't great, so re-started with claassen's.  At least putting Calcio into Serie C should avoid any massive problems as it's just swapping them in.

I'm currently running a test to try and get Sammarinese regens coming through at any Italian clubs. I also have a mate who is building a Serie D database as well. I will report back how we get on! Unfortunately it's looking like San Marino Calcio might be the way to go unfortunately.

Unbelievably, I got it on the first try after my last comment! I've uploaded it to Google Drive for anyone who wants to download it. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1y2Vxs9-K7dkXDU4ucZwRBLGKIhnYT91T

It's looking like a return for Calcio.  When I moved the stadium back to San Marino, I got just 3 Sammarinese youth prospects both times I tested.  I was looking at Croatia Berlin in the editor, but couldn't see the field which gave them Croatian intakes - so I think it's hard coded.  Kinda cool to bring Calcio back in one way though!

It's worth mentioning that this was created with Claassen's San Marino league running, so I think that will have to be subscribed to along with the San Marino Calcio edit I linked to in order to run. Someone else will be able to tell me if I'm correct or not.

It's probably worth having the San Marino League active anyway - particularly if you are taking charge of the National Team from day one - and as the database is available.
