Communication in football is very important. Especially to organize the defense and to get a team to act as one and improve unity between teammates/group feeling.

Some players just aren't interested of learning a new language. Gareth Bale is the most well-known player example as he doesn't know more than just regular football terms in Spanish.

Sending him on an language course to improve this should be refused by the player. I'd like to see this information in his (career)plans. Like "Isn't interested in learning Spanish (club language)".

A player who sees a transfer as a stepping stone for a move to a bigger club is also not very likely to be willing to learn a language as he will only stay for one or two years. He will most likely stop at a basic-level.  Id'like to see this back in his plans and behavior.

I also want to see more variables that influences learning a new language. Attributes like adaptability and professionalism would improve the willing and speedrate in which a player can learn a new language. Also age plays a role as younger people will learn a language easier than a player who is in his late thirties. Also origin plays a role. A Brasilian or Russian player learns English at a much slower rate than a player from Scandinavia for example. It's not likely that most Brasilian player will speak fluently after a couple years.

And there are also some relations between languages. An Englishman finds it hard to learn Danish, but a Dutch person will find this much easier as the languages look a bit like each other.

Language is only one part to integrate in a culture. You also need to understand the rituals and customs of a country/region. A player that adepts to these things will be more accepted by the home-grown players (assuming there are a lot of these in the team) and therefore improve group feeling which will improve the willing to work for eachother on the pitch.

I think you get a sense of what I am trying to say here and this language/culture part could have more depth in FM.

Current proficiency range:

  • 0-1= None
  • 2 -4 = Basic
  • 5-6 = Good
  • 7 - 10 = Fluent
