442 Sir Alex and Pep’s Barca are probably my two favourite tactics over time. Both very contrasting, with SAF the quick tempo wingplay and Pep’s Barca pure possession and control, probing the opposing back line.

I know Pep’s Barca  is a popular one, so I’ve decided to upload my final version interpretation on this year’s FM here.

I play on FM Touch, so unfortunately I don’t have screenshots to show an average possession statistic. However my benchmark for a Pep’s Barca replication is to achieve at least a 65% average in La Liga over the course of the year, otherwise it fails.

Taking the possession stats for each league game, the system achieved a 65.24% average possession. The one aspect I didn’t reflect in the system I have created is the frequent short corners Pep’s Barca used. Not every team has a Messi False 9 that can dribble passed an opponent marking the taker with such ease, so I’ve stuck to my standard delivery into the 6 yard box, though undoubtedly a short routine may up this a little further.

Additionally the highest possession % in a league game this year was 75%.

=

I am not sure how others fare in creating high possession systems. I still find the ME not so favourable for possession based systems, and if you don’t have the best players in the world at your disposal, the system fails.

To use this tactic you’ll need just that, highly technical, smart and creative players that work hard and a very quick backline. And of course, if v high possession football is highly important. But don't even attempt to use this system if you lack the quality.

So if you have the players, then the result will be watching your side play some delightful Pep Ball on your screens. The system will work best in Spain as this is where the style originated from.

However I can’t imagine it working well in England or Germany due to the style of football played there.

Other Notes

Training - "Possession"

Opposition Instructions  (important) - Force opposing offensive wide players to weaker foot / Force opposing full backs+wing backs to centre of the pitch

Competition Progress

Like Pep, he only ever won the ECL with a team of Xavi, Iniesta, and Messi at their peak, with many many good players beside them. And there was no Liverpool Gegenpressing to contend with.

So out we went vs Liverpool in the ECL Semis. We were missing key players in the away tie which cost us in the end, but nevertheless their style of football is not good for Tiki Taka to play against. It mimicked last year fairly well.

Taking that aside, we won La Liga with 95 points, best attack and defence scoring just shy of 100 goals. We also won the Spanish Cup, fortunate on penalties, though over half the team were knackered following an ECL match explaining the highly lacklustre performance. Two out of the three trophies though isn’t too bad.

Oh man, Incredible average possession you achieved with this tactic. In a while I download this tactic and I will try it with my Manchester United three-time Champions League champion! Years ago I look for a tactic with very high levels of possession and effective with results, but I don't get it. As soon as I try it I tell you the result

Good luck with it  I'll be interested to see how it works in the Prem. Generally though, v high possession = very ineffective with results sadly on FM and irl, unless you have the v best players in every position. Gegenpressing overpowers possession on FM nowadays too....but I can say this is the closest I can get with a 65% average possession that can bring a degree of success, in Spain at least :)

Liverpool definitely my bogey team using it.

Update

Made an OI tweak which has been updated now in the main thread.  Seems to have made a positive difference on the defensive side.

Won the league with more points and the Spanish cup again, however we had the chance to meet Liverpool in the ECL final this time around, and produced a really good passing display ended up winning the game 2-0 whilst also hitting 65% possession in this game, Some of the ball recycling was extremely good especially in the first half. You also get to see Liverpool really harrying us when in possession forcing our keeper to kick it into touch a few times.

I've uploaded the PKM just in case anyone is interested to see the tactic in full swing.

I tried it in 5 games and for now it is not a good tactic I won 6-1 against Arsenal which was really great. The other parties tied them all except for a defeat in the final against Tottenham. The positive thing about the tactic is that the majority of the party is dominated, but it is very difficult to score goals and the arrivals at the goal are scarce.

Sorry to hear it is not working for you. What team are you? Do you have players for the system? You have to remember Peps tactics won't work with 99% of football teams. Specific players are required in each and every position, and all must be world class footballers especially with first touch, decision making and technique.

For instance if you used the tactic with Liverpool, it would fail miserably. There is no technique or creativity in the Liverpool midfield, and Salah / Mane are players that are best running directly at the opposition or running into space. They wouldn't fit into a Barca / Pep style of football.

Additionally, teams that gegenpress or park the bus would greatly unsettle the midfield / be compact to break down. Man City in their current state wouldn't be fully suited to play the Barca way. It's probably part reason why they've never got anywhere near to winning the ECL and why they are struggling majorly this year. Barca are the most suited side at the start of the game, but they are weak compared to their previous squads. At least in Spain, teams don't gegen press or park the bus so much.

Money and very carefully planned purchases are needed to make this system work.

My friend, Thanks for responding and being open to criticism, suggestions and returns. Among some regens of great quality, some of my players are:

Oblak; Wagué, Van Dijk, Lisandro Martinez, Koulibaly, Renan Lodi, Frankie De Jong, Bentancur, Exequiel Palacios, Paul Pogba, Ryan Gravenberch, Jadon Sancho, Fabio Silva, etc.

I have many regens of great quality (4 stars) For now the results have not been very positive, however I will continue testing. I hate this year's Match Engine in which possession tactics seem to suffer in the result. And I hate the typical 4-4-2 with which it seems to succeed in this FM.

Did you try Guardiola tactics developed in Passion4FM?

What did you think?

Well mate, I am an avid fan of possession football in general as well and irrespective of the knowledge that the ME no longer is receptive to this style I've still tried upload a Pep system that's great to watch. But as you've highlighted, over the years it is becoming more difficult to be successful with possession football, and that in part is due to the ME aiming to bring greater realism to the game. Possession football is by far the weakest tactical system nowadays.

It's no coincidence Mourinho has said in the past he doesn't want his team to have the football. You don't make errors when you don't have the ball. And it's a lot harder to play with the ball than without.

I should also say now you mentioned your side, to definitely not forget how important PPMs are. With Pep football, the aim is to camp outside the opponents 18 yard box, probing patiently and waiting for an opening. Midfield is key to set the tempo for this.

Doing a little search it looks like Paul Pogba couldn't be a worse option for your midfield there. He likes to get into the opposition area and shoot from distance. Therefore he won't retain position to promote a patient passing game, and he'll be more inclined to shoot from distance that would throw the patient tiki taka game out the window.

I can't say I have, but assume you have...what sort of possession does that achieve?

well, this is a very good possession game tactics which  I have ever experienced when I using your tactics to play a real Pep's style ,for example ;HB can play a real life game playing way like Busquest doing in Pep's Barcelona era.

Very good job brother !!

While I have to admit that in sometimes I can't score a goal during full game keeping push on opponent.....

BTW: I am using same players ( no any new players bought ) from Barcelona at FM20.4 version

Thanks mate glad you like the style. Like you, I wish there was more reward for Pep ball in FM, but the direction the series is going in you'll always need far superior players for it to work and you'll still have a tough time against park the bus / gegenpressing sides. I'd probably only use this style playing as Barca in Spain or create a squad at PSG to watch some nice footy. Very few players in game fit the bill for it too, but Barca has the most suitable players at the start of game.

Peps "City Taka" - New Tactic (Download Here & on OP)

Tested - Dutch / Italian Domestic Double (Ajax / Juve)

This is my second Pep version for the last match engine and based on Man City's successful trophy spell with the Spaniard.

This should be more durable than Peps Barca Tiki Taka system of mine, where that particular side relied on pure individual brilliance to win football matches and was probably only suited for Spain from the large footballing nations. This system now actually has more of a footballing plan, designed to create overloads in the half-spaces causing opposition further problems. It is also based on a fit Sane who plays on the left with Sterling across on the right.

Role wise it implements Mezzala's on attack duty in midfield instead of the two playmakers used at Barca. This also incorporates Pep's use of the Inverted Wingbacks, covering the Mezzala's ventures going forward and a DLP-D that can pick a pass rather than the half-back recycling of the ball role. The False 9 up top also remains, with the centre-backs now both Ball Playing defenders.

*However a reminder this will only work with top sides / dominant in their own divisions, as this brand of football needs the best players available to produce this game.

The possession count will remain extremely high. A couple of screenshots below indicate the side will 99% of the time have more of the ball than the opponents. In due course I'll run a year taking down some statistics to give a rough average possession percentage count.

For now, here is the system and screenshots of an Ajax and Juventus domestic league and cup double:

"City Taka"Possession Test - PSG (69% league average) / Domestic Double

As promised gave this system a test with possession. As I did with Barca, I recorded each game's % being I'm on FMT only. I decided to go with PSG in my second season  following from a treble winning save on my test of the 4231 Real Madrid version tactic on here.

Although not as a competitive league, I thought it would give a good indication to the potential this tactic has of keeping the ball.

The highest percentage I recorded in a single game was 75% with the lowest being 60%, so was really pleased at this range. A whopping 69% average, which is the highest I've had in a league season before on FM. However goals weren't easy to come by, but in contrast defensively it was solid.

We had a good ECL run as well, and it realistically ended in a 3-2 agg defeat in the semi's against Liverpool. Neymar was out both games and could have made the difference. He missed a lot of the year with two major injuries endured.

There was only the league and French Cup available in this season to compete in domestically, and we scooped up both of those. League was tight, we only had 39 points at the half way point. I'm guessing this in part was my previous test tactic was a complete different style of quick tempo and counter-attacking football. This is the complete opposite, with slowest tempo and no counter. And that's not mentioning a number of new players brought in to play this system. However the second half of the season we had 53 points which brought us over the line with the system just "clicking".

Here are some screenies of the year:

Hi,

Yes I have created two....the first one reflects Pep's Barca, the other Pep's City when Sane was fit. The City one is probably more durable in that it uses more regular roles in the midfield. With Pep's Barca, you really need to have the perfect player fit for it to work. PPMs are very important especially with the Barca system.

If you get the right midfield and offensive combination up top you will see very Barca-esque football, with excellent recycling of the ball and patient build up, watching wave after wave of attack with the opponents eventually hoofing the ball out of their danger zone before another attack is launched.

Great, thank you. I've got something quite similar going on with my Arsenal save but this is really helpful.

Hello Bro

I'm back. First of all , I must say that our tactic is amazing to reproduce real life style possession game in FM 2020. After I tested your second version - Man City -then I could say it is better than previous version in all around.

I'm using FC Barcelona and my team is all based on current Barca U19 and Barca B young players except Messi  which works far more better in the field than previous version to retain game possession.

I love it and will continue to test on normal quality players to see if we can maximum every body's max potential ability under Man City version.

No problem both, glad you are both enjoying the styles and a few more tips are below. It won't ever work with average players unfortunately, but Pep's sides have never been made for ordinary footballers.

I did a later PSG season using the Barca version to compare it with the City version. This time around I had 102 points, no losses all year and won every trophy w/ECL. Scored 103 and conceded 10. The average possession count was 68%. But the range varied more, lowest 53% and highest 77%. But watching the team was truly awesome...Verrati and Bernardo Silva were the two playmakers in the side.

Both players on their PPMs like to dictate the tempo, But Veratti is absolutely brilliant for the Iniesta role. His PPMs have try killer balls often, looks for pass rather than score, refrains from taking long shots, tries to play way out of trouble. You won't see him taking random pot shots outside the box often, so the pressure always builds up on the opponents defence. Silva also liked to run with the ball a bit like Xavi used to in tight spots. They were a great combo.

You then had Dybala perfect for the False 9 role dropping deep and playing killer through balls which allowed Neymar and Mbappe to do their thing on the flanks.

*Important Note - Other PPMs to help aid create space for the Inside Forwards are for both wing-backs. Make sure they hug the touchline in addition to getting forward often. This will force the opposing defenders to close them down wide which gives this extra room for the Inside Forwards to be more dangerous and exploit. Very much needed with the slower tiki taka tempo game. Getting forward often will also cause more of these situations to occur in the opponents third.

--

@ alanaron, I thought you may find the City version a bit better which I am glad. It's more durable compared to the more specialist Barca system and there will be more players available that can fill the midfield roles. City irl have worse players than Barca did and the teams in the league are much more aggressive, and Pep adapted accordingly. it's why I think this City version will be better suited for more leagues as a whole, but the Barca tactic for those leagues you are far superior in, and leagues where there is less pressing involved (Spain). Very few players are capable of playing the Barca system.

New System - Pep's Die Bayern 235 Inverted Pyramid (70% Possession)

(Dload Here and on OP)

tac.thumb.png.c90a09418713284d43b42278d226de8f.png

Brief

This is the last of my Pep's systems for this year's final patch FMT 2020, and it's my personal favourite of mine from the lot. Why? Quite frankly it's absolutely bonkers! Playing with 5 strikers and only 2 centre-backs is going back to the early 1900s.

Anyway, this was a system Pep used every so often in the Bundesliga back in his Bayern days against sides more defensive in nature. The idea was by playing 5 up top, with sides playing a back four there was always going to be confusion and always a free man very difficult to mark. A very risky game at the back though, so a quality keeper and two very able centre-backs are a must. Well every position on the pitch in fact requires huge individual quality.

Pep hasn't reached an ECL final since his Barca days back in 2011, but his domestic dominance is unquestionable and this system played a part with his trophy hauls in Germany.

How it Functions in Brief

Like his other systems, he uses the full width of the football pitch to try and stretch the opposition. The DMC position used was that as at Barca the half-back role, with two inverted wing-backs that most of the time functioned as central midfielders.

This is where it is a bit more interesting. He essentially used two of the wide central forwards to work in tandem with the wide wingers that aimed to stretch the pitch / hugging the touchline. With the inner forwards, typically one of these would drop back (The Trequartista / Gotze), and the other would get forward (Shadow Striker / Muller). Both would play off Lewandowski, the complete forward who would also drop deep and help to link up the play based on the movement of the wider forwards.

(Make sure you have player PPMs / trained to suit / Drop Deeper, Get Forward Often, Hug Touchline)

Both defenders at the back were ball-players in a typical stopper cover combination. And Neuer a fantastic keeper sweeper much needed in the very high line Pep plays. He also has great throwing distribution to launch counters from deep whenever there was an opportunity, which is great added variety mixing it up with the slow tiki taka footballing philosophy.

(Another PPM, long throws to start counters)

OIs

These are the same with both Barca and City tactics here, forcing the opponents defensive wide players to the centre, and offensive wide players to their weaker foot

Results

I have ran two tests. One with Juventus as they only needed some transfers to improve the squad depth and it was in a defensive league. And my PSG save where I was able to rejig the squad with quality to play Pep's football as it should be done, vs sides who will more often than not let us play our game.

Possession

Juventus - This averaged 68% across the 38 league games

PSG - This averaged 70% across the 38 league games

Compared with the other of my Pep tactics here, this system has the most potential for greater possession, and also achieved the highest in game at 78%.

Seasons

Juventus - Serie A P95 + Coppa Italia

Here the Serie A was always in control from the start to the end of the season. We ended up on 95 points and also won the Coppa Italia against Inter 2-0 with 75% possession. CL Quarters was as far as we got though. I was expecting to score a few more goals, but with such a defensive league and severely lacking a good Shadow Striker it meant we weren't as dangerous as the system was designed to be.

PSG - Ligue 1 P110 + ECL

This surpassed all my expectations on the domestic league front. The Barca Tiki Taka amassed 102 points with no defeats scoring 103 and letting in just the 10....This 235 broke the French Ligue 1 scoring record surpassing the 118, with our total being 120. Defensively we also let in just the 16 giving us +104 in the GD., and our final league points total was 110, no losses of course. Both the points and goal difference are new records on this FM for me. There were a few games some substitutions helped turn things around, but you make your own luck I suppose :)

We lost to OM away in the French Cup Semis which was a pity - but we beat Man Utd in the ECL final 2-0 which more than made up for it. They obviously tried to press us bringing our possession down to 55%, but this left them more vulnerable with our player quality shining through in a game we also controlled both with the ball and shots attempted.

Below are some screenies, and I will in due course try and post a clip to show the sort of football you'll get to see on the pitch with this 235.

Hope you enjoy.

Just out of interest, I noticed you've got 'Get Stuck In' selected. Would I be right in guessing that's a defensive measure to try and stop attacks as the formation is so attaching?

I usually tend to go with Stay in Feet to reduce set piece opportunities but just wondering.

Indeed :)  I believe a player will be more inclined to make a tactical foul with this setting ticked.  Pep's style is so geared in one direction and it's an integral part of his tactical planning, because his extreme high line setup can be so easily exposed if the opponents can get past his high pressing strategy.

Absolutley loving the City Pep tactic, doesnt get the praise it deserves tbh. Never seen a possession based tactic that scores goals and gets you such high % of possession. Great work!

Which pitch size is most suitable? Smallest possible?

Cheers, glad you're enjoying it :) You would want the complete opposite for a possession based system. Playing so intricate will make it hard to carve open spaces at low tempo, so make sure it's as wide as it can possibly be.

I've noticed that in pep barca tactic  xavi and iniesta roles have the instructions to man mark dml and dmr.  If i face an opponent who plays without defensive midfielder, do I have to change the instructions to man mark cml and cmr ? Or leave the instructions the same?

Well spotted :) It aims to promote the high pressing trap in order to win the ball back as quick as possible once lost., and is also the reason I show the full backs to the inside of the pitch.

Given I'd want these players placing immediate pressure in these zones I'd leave it as it is, so that an opposing midfielder that does drop deep to receive the ball in this position would be immediately pressurised.

This is a very good tactic. Fun to watch. Doesn't seem to rely on the long throw ins so much but rather deep freekicks.

It is a very specific tactic, meaning it doesn't dominate across the board, it is vulnerable against parked buses and against superior squads that gegenpress. But it is great, nay excellent 60-70% of the LEAGUE games. I used it in EPL and Turkish Superlig with top and sub top teams. In tough fixtures and cup matches it is best to have a couple of alternative tactics, to start or switch to during the game. Or, to put it another way, it would also be very useful to have it handy for teams who play the gegenpressing hoof-ball normally, to switch to, in order to control momentum, or to break deep narrow defences.

I assume not as you said you holidayed through most of the seasons but just curious. When I have played against teams with good AMR/L they can get in behind the wingbacks effectively.

Well, probably not if you now have a squad designed to play this system specifically and well. As it's been mentioned above, it's weak against gegenpressing and Liverpool having world class players playing that style too you're not onto a winner. Only if your team plays well on the day you have a chance =) On these particular systems I've played through them and not holidayed.

Really only parking the bus can do the job against a side that lacks creativity. You'd need to completely change the philosophy, which might prove difficult for a squad that is designed / used to playing one extreme way, and unlikely these players would have the attributes to adapt. Possession is meant to be the form of defence for a side that is geared to play tiki taka.

Tell a lie...well I do have a suggestion, although it's quite a risky one.

The only thing I ever tweak in-game apart from going down to 10 men is time-wasting, generally to hold onto a lead with 5 minutes to go.

Gegenpressing aims to bulldoze you within the first 60 minutes, at which the opponents will then start to get tired and make substitutions. Tiki Taka in general works the other way, trying to tire the opposition out for the first 60, and then aim to make the breakthrough in the later part of the game when the other team is knackered.

My suggestion would then be to time-waste as much as possible for the first 60 minutes. This in the hope you have good enough players to keep hold of the ball and nullify the opponents chances to win the ball back and in dangerous areas. They will hopefully be chasing shadows and will start to get frustrated.

If all goes to plan and you're able to hold or just be a goal down after 60 minutes, you can then try and edge more into the game and set time-wasting to sometimes. It also will be a period where they may start to make substitutions with weaker players coming on and also won't be settled into the game.

Then with around 15 minutes to go, their pressing won't be as effective. and could well have changed to a more negative tactic At this point you can try and stamp your authority on the game for what is left of it and try to pinch something by setting it to never.

great tactic. i hope to place most of its elements in a 4123 i use in gladbach. next window i will buy 2 passers and place luis alberto in the f9 role. i trusted that player from even his liverpool days.. btw the biggest problem i had with my possesion tactic was the enemy team playing safe possesion in its own yard. do you happen to have that way played by ME against your tactic?

Thanks. Well I can't say I've frequently noticed it, perhaps in a few games. I've mainly played this style of football in La Liga though so perhaps if playing elsewhere other coaches may adapt differently.

Also was your possession based tactic using pressing and a high line / engagement at the maximum? That should bring about a less occurrence of this as you're immediately trying to put pressure on the opponents to win the ball back asap. It could make them rethink their approach again.

Hey Mate

I'm back to here again.

I would like to discuss with you about STC role in this system .You know in reality that it is very difficult yo find a suitable False 9 around world. There is only one Pablo Dybla at this moment but we have lots great players like L.Martinez,Haaland as they are more suitable as a Advance Forward

So do you think in your tactic system that I can change STC role according to which players I get?

Hi mate,

It's a problem indeed = and Pep used Messi because he was the only one in the world capable of playing the False 9 role to such effect. Unfortunately if you want to keep this very fluid tiki taka style that relies on trying to draw the opponents defence out of position, then know you can't.

The only role that might work to a degree is the DLF-S. That role will have the striker drop deeper, but it does play a little differently to the False 9. The play though might end up beating a bit too slow then, but you could give it a try. I've never tried a trequartista up top, but this role also tends to drift out of position so that is also a possible try. No other roles though imo will be suitable for this style of game.

Hi,

what`s your favorite corner setup?

I`m stuck on the old "near post" with biggest header/jumping reach player and want to try something more efficient.

Also I`m a really big fan of SAF Manchester United tempo counter. Can you make a new version that works with the latest ME?

Hey, nice tactic. Will give it a go. Call me a noob but how do i force defensive players to the centre?

Hi,

Simply direct the foot of the positioned player in question so that it faces the middle of the pitch under the Opposition Instructions.

For example, a LB you would show onto their right foot.
