In May 2007 Ian Bogie was appointed as Manager, his assistant being former Preston North End and Newcastle United team mate, as well as former Gateshead Captain, Jeff Wrightson.

Hi I am playing with Gateshead. Currently third after ten games. and still in clc and fa cup. Signed a lot of freebies, and got rid of a lot of the players on release or offer to clubs. Best signing is Gallupo. He has scored 10 in 11. He is amazing. How are you doing?

Come on the HEED!!!

Thanks for doing this thread! I'm currently playing my home town team (Leeds), but I also like to take a BSP team to the Premiership; I'd thought about giving Gateshead a go because of the ground capacity potential ( = revenue) as you go through the leagues. Very interested to see your recommendations on sales and buys in due course!

Ive not long started my game as i have been working alot latley so i will be updating as soon as i can.

I just hope people look at this thread and decide they want to give it a good ole go !!!

I've been playing FM09 consistently over the past week as I've been indoors with a virus/heavy cold.

One of the things that I've noticed in FM09 is that the work permit system seems to factor in the league in which the player has been signed to play in when making a decision on whether the permit will be granted, or not; ie will the player bring higher quality than the normal player. What this means is that many more players are earning w/p's without international caps on the basis of their quality. On the Leeds/Lower League legends threads I have listed many examples of this.

As I like to sign South American players in FM09, you get a lot of player for your money especially in BSN/BSP, I'm going to attempt today to build a fully South American team at Gateshead.

I've loaded all 8 sets of South American players and although it will be mainly Bolivians, Ecuadorians and Venezuelans that will come to BSN/BSP, the other leagues will be useful for later in the game.

The main downside of assembling a whole new team, is that it takes time for the team to gell as a unit. In this case, if I can find the players, I'm confident that their quality will be a high enough to overcome this.

I'll report back later today with my findings and any highly recommended players!

Well Nicko good luck with everything there sounds like you have a real task on your hands espicially like you said with the team bonding.

Good Luck im still awaiting a parent club and really strugling to find a DM

I'm just about there with this and will post the recommended players shortly. Just to say there are a few really good players in the team, including a Bolivian international striker! Just two caps, but he's only 23 with time to get loads more as Gateshead power through the leagues! In the friendlies, it is the English players who are struggling to bond. Not for long though as they have all been released.

The only risk with what I am doing is that I have run up a debt by releasing players, I wonder how long this will be tolerated by the Board? Going to attempt to arrange a load of friendlies to bring in some cash.

Right here we are. These are the South American players that will join Gateshead at the beginning of the game and get W/P's. I've marked (*) the recommended players. All are dirt cheap, most just £1k. You will probably have to load players from the countries indicated; excepting, probably Getulio and Galuppo:

GK Yaldin Salazar*. Bolivian.

DR Anderson Arias*. Venezuelan (needs to be retrained to play on right).

DL Rennier Rodriguez. Venezuelan. Jose Luis Granados. Venezuelan.

DC Alejandro Bortello. Uruguayan with Italian passport.

M Yomar Rocha*; Bolivian. Dorian Cerezo; Bolivian. Geovanni*; Brazilian with Spanish passport. Julio Barboza*; Venezuelan. Jorge Casanova; Venezuelan. Nelson Ramero Fernandez*; Venezuelan. Miguel Mancilla.; Venezuelan.

FC/ST Getulio*; Bolivian (2 international caps!). Jose Parra; Venezuelan. Pierre Alexandre Pluchino Galuppo*; Venezuelan (already well known).

Will report back on league progress, although TBH I expect to win BSN by some way as these players are massively better than the original squad.

Mid season Update.

The largely Bolivian and Venezuelan new side blended together quickly and, using Zagallo tactics, soon began playing attractive football and powered through its league and cup fixtures. At 31.1.09 Gateshead sit top of BSN with 68 points from 26 league games, some 13 points clear of their nearest rivals, Harrogate.

A good FA Cup run, including a 2-1 victory against league 2 side Exeter, saw Gateshead reach the FA Cup 3rd round. Drawn against Sunderland, the side bravely battled going down 2-1, but giving the home side a real fright. The tie against Sunderland brought in a valuable £300K in revenue, which transformed the financial position of the club.

Still in the FA Trophy and Conference Cup, I fancy Gateshead to win them both.

One transfer update to report; Tomas Rincon, a 9 cap 21 year old Venezuelan international joined the club in early January. A very good player with the class to play for the club through to League 2, and should he develop, a potential League 1 squad player of the future.

Full update at the end of the season.

A highly successful first season for the Venezuelan/Bolivian all stars with the fully imported side far too strong for Blue Square League teams.

BSN was won by March with a final points haul of 107, some 29 clear of their nearest rivals, Harrogate. Gateshead also collected the FA Trophy and the Conference League Cup.

By the end of the season the starting 11 were all attracting interest from League sides. I decided to cash in on the squad fringe players and therefore sold on:

Alejandro Bertoldi to Cisco Roma for £20K. A rash sale because I was never to adequately replace him.

Yomar Rocha to Aldershot for £20K.

Jorge Antonio Ortiz to Blackpool for £20K.

Dorien Cerezo to MK Dons for £30K.

Geovanni to Chapecoense for £20k.

With the transfer kity relatively awash with cash, I looked forward to acquiring 3-4 high quality signings. Sadly it proved to be unrealistic optimism. With Gateshead's "pulling power" still too low to attract higher quality players and work permits proving very difficult to obtain (presumably because of the higher league) the incoming transfers were not as significant as I had hoped:

Luis Seijas, D/ML a Venezuelan Youth international, and the only work permit success, for £1K.

Fernando Pellegrino, GK. Argentinian with Italian passport, as the backup GK.

Steeve Gustan a French free transfer as a squad midfielder.

Martin Andrizi, ML. Argentinian with Italian passport. A good signing this, and once retrained, and will be the principal AML for this season.

Derlis Andres Torres. An 18 year old Paraguayan AMC with a Belgian passport signed for £3k from Guarini. A good signing and a hot prospect for 2-3 years time.

Marius Jianu. A 18 year old Romanian ST. A £1K signing from GP Criaovo. Without doubt, the best transfer and a player that looks good enough all the way to and through League 1.

But the biggest transfer was the one that didn't happen; Leicester City made repeated bids for Rennier Rodriguez. The highest bid being a massive £250k! Tempting, but as the club did not need the money and because of my relatively fruitless transfer acquisitions, I declined the offer.

With a much larger wage structure this season, I brought in the following back room team:

Hans Jorritsma, a Dutch national team coach, as Ass Man. A steady and highly reliable pair of hands who will also relieve me of press conference duties.

Patrick Gonfalone, a French national team 7* tactics coach.

Laurent Chatrefoux, a French national team 7* GK coach.

Andrea Ferretti, an Italian national team physio.

I will look out for any other 7* coaches that become available through the season.

Despite the incoming transfer disappointments, Gateshead still look far too strong for BSP.

Mid season update to come.

I too play as Gateshead and am in my second season.

I can tell you without any cheating you can make millions for Gateshead.

I released every player and signed a whole new squad. Best players are -

ST - Willy Robert - Saint Denis - Free (scored 37 goals)

LD - Keith Foy - free transfer - Amazing

AMR - David Texeira - Petange - Free - attacking Dynamo

MC - Markus Huwer - Rosport - Free - superb midfielder

GK - Sebastien Scherer - Mondercange - Free - clean sheets galore

DC - Paulo Santos Rocha - Mamer - Free - Complete rock

DC - Jim Ablancourt - Tampon - Free -Giant in defence

DR - Giovanni Songoro - Tampon - Free - Defends and attacks well

AML - Patrick Vaz - Tampon - Free - Wing God

AML - Eric Farro - Tampon - Free - Wing God #2

Ended up completely unbeaten in the league with 34 wins, 8 draws, 110 points and +65 goal difference. Also won the FA Trophy, unfortunately only reached second round of FA Cup after losing replay at Roots Hall against Southend 2-1 with them getting a winning penalty in the final 2 minutes. Reached semi's of conference cup.

End of the year offered players out for silly amounts and kept dropping them down until offer received. This is how I got the millions -

Eric Farro - 500k plus friendly

Cedric Besson - 55k

Markus Huwer - 250k plus friendly

Jim Ablancourt - 650K with bonuses upto a million plus friendly

Rudi Pounoussamy 325K plus friendly

That's a cool 1.8 million. Also knocked back offers from Championship clubs for Willy Robert.

Have Hans Jorritsma as coach, Jimmy Walker as Physio and Graeme Robertson as Ass Man and John Richards as scout.

Just entering second season and finding it harder to get players despite my board allowing me 1.1 million for sales (so far spent none as no one willing to come!).

Would recommend if Newcastle become your parent club getting Nile Ranger and using him as a striker. His stats are crap but boy is he good. First game of BSP against Altricham and 5 - 0 after going 2 up inside 4 mins.

Good to see that there is someone else on here, I was starting to feel lonely.Wow, amazing sales! Thought I was doing well. Looks like you have Renunion loaded and that must be the best decision of the year! So, as i didn't I cant' sign anyone of these players. How does Jorritsma rate your team? From what he says about my team it looks like I've two League 2, 8 League 1 and 1 Championship player.

I've been unable to sign anyone worth having, apart from the Romanian, second season either. I'm looking forward to pushing on to League 2 and I expect the quality of player available to change dramatically. I've noticed that team blending is really important in FM09 though, so probably just 3 -5 new players, as the side will be good enough anyway for League 2.

Keep in touch!

Just set up a new game, with the right players loaded, to have a look at these players. Amazing stuff, with these and the better Venezuelans/Bolivians that I found, you could beat most League 1 sides!

Did your teams blend straight away?

No, but the quality of the players is so high that you still win games. Second season I'm now winning games 4-0 rather than the 2-0 results of last season, and that's even though the opposition is better. The point though is that by bringing in the quality of these players - or the ones from Reunion who overall are better - you secure the future of the club. On the pitch, as Gateshead will win BSP by miles - and off it because of the sell on value of the players.

No to Kris Gate, he's not bad but others are better.

Try Vincent Richetin a right back from Cornercau, he's ripping it up in BSP.

So far 3rd in BSP and just lost my first ever league match to Ebbsfleet (mainly due to four key injuries in match previous!!!) but still that's 1 league loss in over 50 games.

Just picked up Mohammed Zaboul from Faetano in San Marino, I'll let you know how it goes as well as -

Matteo Andreini a DRL MC from Cosmos in San Marino,

Derlis Hernan Torres MC from Guarani in Paraguay but I actually paid 40,000 for this guy.

Mid Season Update - 31.1.10

Gateshead continue to power on as the Bolivinan/Venezuelan boys "smooth sail" through BSP.

At the mid season they sit top of BSP with 73 points from 29 games, a healthy 13 points clear of Histon.

An FA Cup run again ends in the 3rd Round as they were drawn - once more - away at Sunderland. The bonus was a further £300k from gate receipts as the side were beaten 2-0. Meanwhile Conference Cup and FA Trophy runs continue.

No meaningful transfer activity to report as the quality of player prepared to join and W/P failure combine to prevent any acquisitions. Championship clubs now start to show interest in the sides' best players - Rennier Rodrigues, Tomas Rincon, Getulio and Julio Barboza - but all bids are rejected.

Full update at the end of the season.

Hi Sparky.

Good to hear from you!

Have a look at the posts from uglyklownboy and myself for all the players we have listed.

Of the players I have signed I would highly recommend (all of them League 1 quality):

Rennier Rodriguez (Venezuelan)

Tomas Rincon (Venezuelan). He most probably will not come straight, but after a couple of months he will. He is a Championship player.

Pierre Alexandre Pluchino Galuppo (Venezuelan).

Julio Barboza (Venezuelan).

Nelson Ramiro Fernandez (Bolivia).

Getulio (Bolivia).

The MUST load up players are from:

uglyklownboy would recommend - Reunion, Luxembourg and Guadeloupe.

I'd recommend - Bolivia & Venezuela (for the beginning of the game), Argentina & Brazil (for when you get to the Premiership) & Peru & Uruguay (hopefully for League 2 - I'll report back later) for later on in the game. I'd also load England, France & Spain for regens.

In terms of scouts, I wouldn't bother until you get to League 2, as the only country you can scout for the first two seasons is England and the players recommended will be rubbish. In terms of staff, bring in Hans Jorittsima as your Ass Man first season. In the second season - when you can bring in up to 7 coaches - have a look at the people i have listed in the thread.

Good luck, looking forward to the updates!

Has anyone been promoted yet.

I am also going to load all players from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Northern Ireland as I want a Bristish team. What do you guys think?

I'm in April 2010 and Gateshead are on the verge of a second promotion. My team is S American, uglyklownboy's team are French nationals. Having played a lot of lower league games, I'd say that you'd struggle to build a British team anywhere near the quality of the players listed. But it would be great if you proved me wrong because that would mean that you had unearthed some real quality gems!

First season and should go up easily, get Newcastle as a feeder club. Get Ranger off them.

Kris Gate and James Curtis are both doing good jobs for my first team.

I found the younger the players, the easier it is for them to get work permits despite them having no caps.

Yaldin Salazar GK is a must buy.

Rennier Rodriguez LB is also a must buy.

Unfortunately mate, the local pub team would turn you down at the beginning of the game.

LOL Yes I think I have found that out myself now. Tried loads of teams but nothing!

Anyway here are my transfers so far!

That is going to be one hell of a team. The best of Reunion/Venezuela - quality. That's exactly what i would do you if i started the game again. Add Tomas Rincon to your shortlist, in a couple of months he should want to come.

Attempt to sell everybody and take any offer you get - even £0 as it saves money on termination.

Ok once again cheers for the advice im just going to transfer list all the players I haven't signed.

Well 3 games in and I have won all 3 games

Burscough (H) won 3-0

Southport (A) won 7-0

AFC Telford (H) won 4-0

So far so good then. Im loving this game!

Another question where do you think I should look to get friendlies? Top European Teams, Mid Prem Teams, Championship Teams?

Thanks

Sorry on late night so couldn't get back to you.....friendlies try second division german teams. 1860 Munchen always accept and you get about £60,000 off that one mate.

I intend on starting a Gateshead game asap but I just have a couple of questions for the people who seem to be having success.

What tactic are you using? I have heard that the default attacking 442 works well, are people using default tactics or creating their own?

Has everybody downloaded the patch?

I am having trouble downloading the patch as i get that verification error and I think it's needed as I turned the game off when it was 15 - 16 in a penalty shoot out in the cup and it just wouldn't end. Shame as I had Nile Ranger and Fabio Zamblera on loan from Newcastle and they were starting to gel and scoring lots of goals.

With the injuries and the endless penalty shoot outs its hard to play without the patch.

Cheers

What tactic are you using? I have heard that the default attacking 442 works well, are people using default tactics or creating their own?

Has everybody downloaded the patch?

I am having trouble downloading the patch as i get that verification error and I think it's needed as I turned the game off when it was 15 - 16 in a penalty shoot out in the cup and it just wouldn't end. Shame as I had Nile Ranger and Fabio Zamblera on loan from Newcastle and they were starting to gel and scoring lots of goals.

With the injuries and the endless penalty shoot outs its hard to play without the patch.

Cheers

Yes I'm patched, no trouble here. It may be worth checking the bugs forum on your issue.

I'm using a 4-4-2 attacking formation with both wingers moved forward to AM's rather than plain old wide mid's. I'm playing mixed passing but heavy towards short, 3/4 up on attack, about the same on work rate and closing down. Seems to work fine so far , still 2nd in BSP.

I've not had any problems either.

I've used Zagallo's tactics since FM08 and these continue to work very well on FM09. In highlight, his tactics encourage a very mean defense, use two "robot" like (no creative freedom/crossing machine) wingers and a target man. Here is a link to the thread, it's well worth reading all the way to the end, the tactic download is on the last page.

Yeh Im patched up too. No problems. I am using WWFans tactics working very nicely. I use the 4-4-2 set. 1 Att Mid, 1 Def Mid and 2 wide wingers with 1 forward dropping deep to receive the ball and the other more attacking.

Im top after 5 games only drawing 1 game.

I need a Def Mid player though any recomendations?

End of Season Update

Gateshead won the BSP in early April 2010 and finished the season with a final points haul of 116 from the 46 games, some 23 points clear of second placed Chester. Unbeaten in the league, Gateshead also retained the Conference cup and the FA Trophy.

Despite operating well within the wage budget, money remained very tight. Gate receipts, based on a 960 league and cup average, remained low. If not for the FA Cup 3rd round gate receipts and the £50K for winning the FA trophy, the club would not have broken even on the season.

I decided, following uglyklownboys example, to cash in on some of the prominent squad to raise transfer revenue. These were the sales:

Rennier Rodriguez to Birmingham, £500K.

Julio Barboza to Bristol City, £500K.

Yaldin Salazar to West Brom, £500K

Marius Jianu to Blackpool, £475K.

Nelson Fernandez to Blackpool, £400K.

Alexander Zabala to Cardiff, £250K.

Martin Andrizi to Shrewsbury, £100K

Steve Guusteen to Tours, £16K.

All deals represented good returns on the small sums paid for these players.

My approach to incoming transfers was based on adding quality to, and reducing the age of, the squad. But again due to the availability of the players prepared to join and difficulties in obtaining w/p's; recruitment was mixed. The pick of the transfers were:

Gonzalo Baretto, £475K. Baretto, a 18 year old FC, is a -9 PA player and I hope with training and games he may fulfill this potential.

James Rodriguez, £275K. Rodriguez is a 18 year old Columbian AMC and is high quality. His w/p was granted on appeal.

Ramiro Ballivan, £1k. For those who loaded Venezuelan players, mark this boy down, initial w/p granted and high quality now and up to the Premiership.

Montesin, £24k. A good AML Qatarian international who holds an Italian passport. He has good set piece attributes.

Issoumaila Lingane, £40k. A young Burkino Faso international AMR.

Two quality free transfers - who arrive on 1.9.10 - completed transfer activity as the season began:

Jorge Britez, a Parguayan MC international who holds a Spanish passport.

Safiou Saibou, a 18 year old 1 cap Togo international. I was surprised his w/p was granted on initial application.

So offensively the squad looks strong as the season commences, but defensively especially at DR/DL the squad is just adequate. So as I still have around £750k to spend, I should be grateful for any player suggestions!

In the backroom I brought in Massimo Neri, the England national coach, as Ass Man (due to his high tactical knowledge, man management and judging player potential attributes) and now have a full 7 * coaching system in place.

Overall I believe the side has enough quality to get promotion to League 1, but it might be tight!

I can only suggest the players we have listed, 2 seasons on (see above update) I'm still struggling to bring players in.
