[FM20] It was Cambrogi in Wales, but now it's all about aggression in Wales, in England. Bellicosity, pugnacity and belligerence are all excellent words. But Welsh belligerence, in England now.

We've been poor all season by our new standards. TNS out-scored us over the whole season and we only pipped them by 1 point because we beat them 4 times in the league this season taking 12 points from them. Nobody else beat them in domestic competition all season, (and we then went and beat them in the Cup Final for good measure). If anything, they were the better team in domestic competition this season and we are going to have to step things up next season.

We've seen off Ryan Giggs as Manager of TNS. He decided that he was never going to win the league title and has moved on to Portsmouth

TNS continue to smash it out of the park in Europe.

Afan Lido on the other hand continue to under-perform in Europe.

Carmarthen are also under-performing.

We really need someone other than TNS and ourselves to start winning in Europe.

End of Season Summary. May 2038.

League Table. This season was the first where we were allocated 5 European positions. Ourselves and TNS will both play in the Champions League next season while Barry Town will play in the Euro Cup. Afan Lido have qualified for the Euro Conference and Carmarthen won the Playoff for the 2nd spot in the Euro Conference. With 5 European spaces available, it means that Bognor City in 8th position were part of the Playoffs for a European place. If we can rise in the rankings as high as 6th as a Nation, then it will mean that we will be allocated 6 European spots and with 4 teams vying for a Playoff place it will mean that the team finishing as low as 9th are in the Playoffs.

You just squeezed through for another double, well done!

Yep. Really wasn't a good season.

Lost in 1 Cup Final. Needed penalties to win the other and only won the league by a single point by beating TNS 4 times. I'm going to have to do some hard recruiting over the Summer and it's not my forte.

We're only spending £73k of a £327k wage budget per week, so we certainly have the budget available. We also have £15.5M to spend on transfers.

It will be interesting to compare our wage budget to that of TNS. I'm not sure I have done that yet in this save.

Actually I can't find that table. I'm sure it should be available. Maybe it's not visible because i have just clicked over to a new season. :kriss:

If any of the Cups that TNS is in have begun yet, you can check salary there.

We're a couple of months into the 2038/39 season now so let's have an update on the salary situation.

3f6a3f1b427d9d31852aa3f8decfd202.png

W'ere only spending £82,160 per week of an £480,369 per week budget.

£82,160 per week equates to £4,272,320 per year which surprises me a little.

If I spent the whole weekly budget of £480,369 then this would equate to £24,979,188 per year. That's HUGE!

What I wanted to do was compare our salary to that of TNT so let's have a look at that now that the season is up and running.

b495fce240be4dcb4d1e5fc38de98d0e.png

We're out-spending TNS by a significant amount, (not far off double), and I can see why if I'm honest.

We've got 89 players at the club which might seem high because we don't have a Reserve squad in Wales, (just Seniors and Youth squads), and especially so when we haven't exactly been churning out Wonderkids from the Academy. What I have been doing though is signing all Youth players to a Youth contract and then only signing those to a Pro contract, (on their 17th birthday), if I think that they can feature in the Senior squad, (with special focus on European competition and registration).

On that front, we are up to 21 registered players out of a possible 25 in European competition this season), and while that might seem like we are still 4 players short, (we are), it's still progress from the 7 players we were short only a few seasons ago. I felt spoilt registering 21 players this year.

I have possibly signed too many players this season, (and haven't managed to off-load some of those who will be replaced), but I was really not happy with our domestic season last year and I'm determined that we won't be struggling for depth this year.

This is the squad ranked by salary.

d04f60f92adbddd88f8b4fccf3c8d51e.png

I've been bitten a few times with min. fee release clauses so I'm determined that we won't be stuck again. I would prefer to pay more and be safe in the knowledge that the player can't be poached away. @rodesiremade a comment about the £250k min fee release clause when my DoF signed Hartley (BEL) *, but I tried and tried and tried to negotiate a new contract with no fee, (or at least a high fee), but he just wouldn't play ball. He turned down offers from a few English clubs, but couldn't say no to Napoli

Transfers. As @rodesirepointed out ahead of time, the min fee release clause did really cost me with Hartley (BEL) *, but I did try to negotiate. He just wouldn't have it. I was happy to sell Walker to TNS. He's 30 and way past his best. Ben Walsh (WAL) 6'5" was another min fee release clause that I wasn't able to renegotiate. He's immediately worth £2.4M at Millwall.

e1315d055f7b7a5b29d3f382112c3ed5.png

I'm happy with the strikers and midfielders that I've signed. They are nothing spectacular, although I really like Kennedy (NED), but I was getting a bit desperate at the back so in the end just signed whoever was available. I will keep looking and sign a serious player if and when I find one.

My plan so far has been that our left striker would basically just bully the opposition. He didn't have to be able to play football. he just needed to be able to physically dominate the opposition defenders. I'm going to try and change that this season and possibly drop 1 of our AF's back to a deeper position, but not really sure what at the moment.

I might have to do it in stages and this might be stage 1.

9df1853e2bc473340e707111bd5e158d.png

Stage 2 might involve the winger on the right side being asked to play less wide and maybe become a RMD(a) attacking out to in, bit it's really just an idea at the moment. I certainly want to play 1 striker off another striker though. I would love a proper TM(s), but haven't found anyone suitable as yet.

European games. We were 3-0 up at HT in the home leg against Slavia Prague and I thought it was done and dusted. We didn't score in the 2nd half and they did and then we were made to rue our lack of 2nd half goals when we suffered an early sending off in the 2nd game. We fell apart and they ran out convincing winners in the end and we crash out of the Champions league at the 1st hurdle. :(

24bf9ab0779ca3f8954945ff128aa277.png

I must admit that I had considered "throwing" this game and then engineering our Euro Cup Group to ensure we finish 3rd and therefore make the Euro Conference Knockout Rounds, but much as I considered it, I decided that the Champions League money was too important at this stage of the save and I would be foolish to under-perform on purpose. It's possibly that sub-consciously I was torn between the two decisions, but I think what really happened is that I under-estimated Slavia Prague a little and with them getting an early goal and us getting an early sending off in the 2nd leg, we were always going to be up against it. I had opted to select a squad based largely on who needed match fitness, and we paid the price.

fe7d3d5283e15a057bd531e7c9d2ef87.png

Now we're in the Euro Cup I am again torn. Do I finish 3rd on purpose and try to win the Euro Conference? Or do I just give it our all and continue to build our co-efficient?

Part of me wants to give it a go and win the thing, but at the same time I know that we are in a re-building phase and winning a European trophy needs to wait.

I often do that too, but when the min fee release clause is so paltry it just doesn't work. I was lucky that the player turned down clubs for the whole season and when he finally joined Napoli for £250,000 and was immediately worth £12,000,000 I think that speaks volumes.

Setting his asking price at £200,000 and asking for a 50% clause, (which is what i did at the start), only works if the player is going to leave. He refused to leave for a whole season.

I've had a bit of a change of heart and am trying to develop a new tactic. The results might/will suffer as a result

We have a new GK in. Williams (TRI) has scored 3 goals in 5 games this month.

Nov 2038.

Domestic games. I've been moaning for a couple of seasons that although we are winning domestic games, we're not battering teams. Already now, despite the fact that we have already dropped a similar number of points to the whole of last season, we are actually putting the opposition away more comfortably.

League games. I mentioned in a previous post that I was thinking about manipulating the results to finish 3rd in the league and qualify for the Knockout stages of the Euro Conference. I haven't done that to this stage, but I will be doing it in the last 2 games. Both games are against Konyaspor and my plan is to make sure that I finish ahead of them, but also do everything that I can to make sure that I don't pass Ajax. Hopefully Ajax will take some points off Getafe and we will get 2 wins against Konyaspor and still finish 3rd.

[Edit]

Ah. Just realised that there is only 1 game against Konyaspor left so we have to make sure we win it.

Dec 2038.

Domestic games. We've been in decent form, but nothing to rival that of TNS.

Afan Lido, (post Harry Kane), were really good and deserved their win. They sat in deep and countered us and it worked really well. :applause:

European games. Well this wasn't the plan at all. We were awful and never really turned up. It was such a disappointment. :(

c27ce8ec667a1308b547125e2c2454b9.png

Our 2 GK's, (1 for domestic games and 1 for Europe), have scored 7 goals between them so far, but not without incident. I have added wide free-kicks to their repertoire and I love it when they take a short free-kick from a wide position and then don't even try to get back to their own half. They actually move into a more advanced position and wait for a return pass and a crossing/shooting option. In the past I've scored a goal with the ball being returned to the GK on the wight flank and him beating his man to the byline before crossing for someone to head home at the far post, and I think it's likely we will see more opportunities like this.

c5bf37439a91b4f2a476bbb404737990.png

There is a cost to moving the GK's into wide positions however. I know that @AceAvengerhas asked in the past how often I concede goals from attacking GK positions, but the truth is that we haven't conceded one until this season and then because I let them take wide free-kicks, (they were only tasked with taking 3 out of the 4 options previously), and also because I hadn;t set up new set-piece tactics for the new tactic.

This is what it looked like to concede.

22783d0468d1572275ceee8e10e1845a.png

This is awful. This does absolutely nothing because everyone is either forward or back and there is a huge space in the middle of the pitch. Let me spend 2 mins on it now and see how I can change it up.

I don't know if this will be fool-proof, but it seems a far better set-up. Rather than 2 huge blocks of players, we now have a far more balanced set-up with multiple layers of defence rather than lots of defenders just backing off.

The biggest change is the DM, He stands with taker and will be able to put pressure on the ball if it comes back his way.

Then we have 2 players outside the box. We have a "lurker" who I have set as a midfielder but I know that if this was a corner situation I would have this as a striker who could attack the ball, drive at the defence and convert to a scoring opportunity. Instead the striker on the edge of the area attacks the ball directly from there. In fact, I've just gone and changed it. I like a striker lurking because he will run with the cleared ball more often and drive in at the heart of the defence. The MCL with now attack the ball from the edge of the area.

The biggest striker and both centre-backs will be the main threat, (1 attacking far post), and my most clinical striker asked to stay on the near post and convert anything that comes back his way.

This is a work in progress so don't feel you can copy and expect good results. I will report back how I get on.

Defending set-pieces. Jan 2039.

Because of the previous post, I had reason to check our defensive set-pieces and didn't like what I saw.

While there was obviously nothing set for the new tactic, (you would think I would have learned by now), the saved tactic on the old 44LongThrow2 tactic also wasn't to my liking.

6368f26a0ca130eced3d26947e48746a.png

It doesn't look awful in principle, but I think as my tactic evolved I didn't take into account the impact this would have on the saved set-piece instructions.

The 2 players staying up are both central midfielders, :idiot: and I have 1 striker asked to go back and another on the Edge of the area. While the positions are reasonable, the roles being asked to take up these positions are not.

Here is what I have changed it to for Indirect wide deliveries from the left.

3f397c373b3c129e717d3334d96e784e.png

I have left the STCL back because at the moment we still have a relatively powerful player playing in that position and in my head it's still a "Big Man". If I didn't have a "Big" striker I would probably move the 4 defenders 1 slot forward and then add the more defensive MC to the back post. Either way, this is better than it was. I expect to see more opportunities from counters now.

I'm tempted to go back for a little go with 44LongThrow2 to see how we get on with the set-piece instructions updated.... :kriss:

Highlights. Nat MG Cup Final. Jan 2039.

We've just played the League Cup Final against TNS and we lost on penalties after extra time. That isn't the reason for the post though. They beat us at the same stage last season, (and I'm sure will beat us again), but the reason for the post is that despite watching comprehensive highlights, the 1st highlight shown is the 1st penalty taken in the shootout.

Reverting back to 44LongThrow2 (with super-charged full-backs/wingbacks), I'm a little happier. The squad is pretty weak out wide at the moment and we are having to make do, but as we are out of Europe, and already 13 points in the league, we haven't exactly got an awful lot to play for over the course of the season. (2nd place and Cup winners is the best we can hope for now).

The danger of wide free-kicks. Apr 2039.

Something for @AceAvengerhere.

If you look at the following picture, everything looks ok at the set-up.

We have 2 players back, 1 standing with taker, 1 lurking and 5 either forward or attacking from deep.

I would prefer if the player standing with taker was on the inside of the ball, but other than that it looks reasonable. There is a big wide open space on the right hand side, but we've got a lurker and 2 players at the far post so I still think it looks decent.

dd7d28a7239c4e370e03efaf14d17fad.jpg

So let's have a look and see how we attack and defend it.

That's fine though I think. We still have the lurker and the player who was standing with the taker in that are so we should be fine.

Harvey is retreating from the wall to collect, and is being closed down by our lurker.

I'm a little concerned that the 2nd player who was in the wall has started to break forward and is almost past our GK already, but everything else looks ok.

9c4856199d36fb8cac6a3af039ab8b8f.jpg

The player who was defending the back post for them is Oliver and just look at how he reacts when teammate Harvey doesn't bother to take a touch and just clears the ball into oceans of space on the other side of the pitch.

Now I'm panicking. Our GK has hardly moved, our 2 full-backs defending on the half-way line are retreating and Oliver has loads of space and an empty net.

Oliver takes aim and scored from just inside his own half. This is the 1st goal we have conceded as a result of our GK being in an attacking situation in this save and it's because I have started to allow them to also take free-kicks from wide positions.

Giggs held them back all along

Maybe he did. They have been very good this season, (although we have regressed a little).

Oh wow. I was just about to show you who Sam Harrison is and what he is all about, (but he's not the manager anymore either).

He's learned his trade at Cefn Druids and then Afan Lido and now he has got the big job and has hit the ground running.

Welsh clubs in Europe. Jun 2039.

TNS. They will probably be a little frustrated that they didn't manage to get past Besiktas to the Champions League Group stage, but the fact that they finished 3rd in their Euro Cup Group probably suggests that they weren't quite good enough.

Barry Town. They may have only scored 2 goals and gained 1 point but Harry Kane's side still made it to the Group stages by virtue of the coefficient that TNS and ourselves have built up.

Welsh clubs in England. Jul 2039.

Cardiff. They have been in the Championship for the whole save and have been under-performing in my view.

db3839ef8170d3cfd33952b7e2b58644.png

Swansea. They finished 3rd two years in succession a few years ago, (without going up), and have also had some time down in League 1. They started off the save well with 6 top 8 finishes in the 1st 7 seasons.

18f9e1c79ccffad3db2784baced1173d.png

Newport Co. They have done well in the save, (no less than 5 promotions), but apart from the 2031/32 season where they finished 3rd in League 1, have mostly found the going hard at that level.

Wrexham. They're usually closer to the bottom than the top.

Merthyr Town. Still struggling in non-playable land.

Poached. Aug 2039.

1.5 gold stars equals the best player that we have had poached, (19 year old Alex Hall who is developing rather nicely at Spurs).

The Close-season

Transfers. I've decided that I'm being too circumspect in my transfer dealings. We've got a huge wage budget and a hefty transfer budget, but the way I'm playing you would think that I was playing a Youth only save or we were millions in debt instead of having quite a bit to spend. With that in mind I've tried to over-haul a lot of the squad with the strategy of buying to sell-on in mind. I don't mind paying cash for players, but I want to avoid sell-on clauses where I can, but when there is no choice I want to ensure that the fee will make a significant difference to us. £1M is neither here nor there anymore.

fc15e37c029a9c520778effe2cfcd059.png

Rhys Collier  will be our 1st choice right back despite being a teenager. There is a £7.75M min fee release clause for foreign clubs and I will happily let him go if someone pays that in a couple of years.

e23ad51b50b3ec5374392e3f204218e0.png

David Goode (ENG) * will be my right sided centre-half. He also joins on a free from Man Utd and has a min fee release clause of £4.6M. Again, if someone pays that then good luck to him. He's already out with a lower back stress fracture, (I have seen a few of them in this save), so will be out for the 1st few months of the season at least.

Gyamfi (GHA) looks a little raw and I've splashed out £1M for him, but really it was largely just to get me into the swing of things. I'm going to loan him out and see what he's like next season.

Tyler (ENG) 6'4" is a bit of a strange one. I was looking for a proper TM for a while and he's not it, but he will be able to come in as a stop-gap and take over from Big Ben (ENG) 6'7" who has been released as he is jut not up to it anymore. I paid £500,000 for him and I think he might play an important role for us in the short term.

I played a left-sided WP(s) on the right hand side last year and while it worked for Kennedy (NED) who played there, it didn't work for the team.  I'm trying to bring in some depth wide right and Hubert (GHA) is the 1st part of that.

Johnson (IRL) was bought on a whim because he is both cheap and has decent potential. I'm going to try and loan him out and he can come back next season and see where he stands.

Chapman (ENG) gives us some more quality in the middle of the pitch. Last season I couldn't afford to go big in Europe without being short in domestic games either side and if I strengthened for domestic games then we were short in Europe.

Leightwood (ENG) was signed early enough that he will become HG at club. He looks quite balanced and is still developing and I'm hoping that he might develop rather nicely.

I saw Wood (SCO) 6'5" and just couldn't resist for £120,000 compensation. I would much prefer he was a "lefty" but other than that he's just what we need.

Nov 2039

Domestic games. We're unbeaten in domestic competition , but are still 9 points behind TNS as a result of having 3 games in hand.

Giggs sacked. Dec 2039.

After Giggs left TNS he moved to Portsmouth for a year and has just been sacked by Cardiff who are wallowing in 19th place in the Championship. I know that Ryan Porteous is doing a hell of a job at TNS, but hopefully Giggs will come back to another Welsh club so that we can renew our rivalry.

As usual, as soon as the previous Facility upgrades are complete I ask for another set.

The only problem is that £7.7M is a lot of money for a club playing in Wales, especially when we didn't qualify for the Champions League Group Stage either of the last 2 seasons.

Facilities are getting there!

They really are.

I'm not sure what the upper level of players we are capable of producing in Wales is, (even with maxed out facilities). We've missed out on the Champions league Group stages for the last 2 years and I'm not sure we will be able to afford the above upgrades come the end of the season.

Transfers. Jan 2040.

4eda132af0b6e8a3114eadbc4dcc2e5e.png

I was a little surprised when this transfer was announced on 1st Jan. He was a target back in the Summer, and I did have him listed as a transfer target, but I can't remember authorising this and I certainly don't remember a £3.5M fee being agreed. That being said, he was my #1 GK target and back in the Summer we had cash to burn. The problem now is that after he arrives our cash balance is doesn to 74c44ee8c5337de9a2ed49a345dd2638.png You have to remember that we have Facility Upgrades costing £7.7M in the pipeline, and if we don't have the cash then they will just get cancelled.

So while this was my #1 target, (at least as far as GK's go), I would have preferred not to do the deal after missing out on Champions League money for 2 successive seasons. What's done is done though and our progress in the Euro League Group stages is now of more importance than previously because we need the prize money that comes with it.

The board seem in-tune with us though and have accepted a £5.5M bid for Jake CB (ENG) 6'2" our best centre-half. I could fdf5ddf2ea8c72773ffe74e1700cc337.png, but I don't think I'm going to. We need the money to pay for the upgrades later in the season.

I've got a feeling though that although we only bought him for £1,700, (from TNS), the DoF found him and did the deal so we also have to give them 40% of any re-sale value. :( Giving away any of the profit is bad. Giving it to TNS is soul-destroying. :(

dedf68991e77baaf84e7cd8cb387b607.png

I've resigned myself to losing Jake CB (ENG) 6'2" but now Barnsley are in for him now and while I don't want to protest the transfer I do want to negotiate the transfer and I can with this one, (but couldn't before).

20% profit has been added. It's not much, but it's better than nothing.

This wasn't the plan. We've done the deal but he's failed to agree terms with either team. I actually want him to go now.

ac29a72aa4836ccd3afcf42e3f5f0007.png

I've also accepted a bit for current 1st choice GK Williams (TRI). We've just been beaten twice in 7 days by TNS and while it's not impossible for us to win the league, it's highly unlikely. While this isn't awful in itself, (I'm actually loving the competition with TNS), the route to the Champions League Group stage is much harder from the Runners-Up position, (but that's a challenge in itself right?) I'm determined that we are going to have enough for this next pair of upgrades even if I might put a hold on them after these have been done.

Dec 2039 and Jan 2040.

Apologies, I keep forgetting to update at the end of the month.

Domestic games. We lost twice to TNS in 7 days and as a result, (with the Feb draw against Bangor), we trail TNS 5 points and they also have a game in hand. :(

League games. We finished top of the Group and I'm glad because it should give us an easier draw in the Knockout stages and we need to progress because we need the money.
