DazRTaylor
So having always read the youth only challenge thread on these forums, I have been fascinated with playing a youth only save. I have played this through to December in the first season before posting to make sure I stuck it out, so to speak. So, here is FC United of Manchester, newly promoted back into the Vanarama National North. I cannot sign any players and must wholly rely upon my youth academy. DazRTaylor
The fabled "Golden Generation". Time will tell, I guess. I really need a goalkeeper though as I am playing a teenage kid between the sticks right now and he only has three silver stars for current ability. DazRTaylor
Youth Candidates Season 2020/21 FC United of Manchester So, our "Golden Generation". To say I am disappointed is an understatement. The best three are below.
DazRTaylor
End of Season Review Season 2020/21 FC United of Manchester League Table - A terrific league campaign saw the club finish in the play off spots, in fourth place. Play Offs - We comfortably beat Kettering in the first round before travelling to Hereford and winning 3-1, largely down to our opponents receiving an early red card. In the play off final, We played Alfreton and despite beating them twice during the league campaign, they held us to a draw before beating us on penalties. A heartbreaking way to end the season, but probably a good thing as we are nowhere near ready for the league above. League Fixtures 1, 2 & 3 - I can't complain after a solid season. F. A. Cup - A good cup run that came to an abrupt halt, losing 6-1 at home to Torquay United, who only play a league above us. F. A. Trophy - We made it through to the third round before being outclassed by Aldershot of the Vanarama National League, going down 3-1 at home. Pre Season Friendlies - The usual mix of bigger clubs and smaller ones. A good set of results overall though, Squad - We played above our station all season and a repeat next year will be tough. Squad Dynamics - Following the good season, squad harmony is excellent. Transfers In - None. Transfers Out - None. Youth Candidates - A supposed "Golden Generation" which I just do not see. Sam Murray YP21A1 is the best of the bunch apparently. Finances - A very healthy bank balance. Key Players Tunde Owolabi - The best player at the club by a country mile. I managed to get him to sign a two year contract extension too. A return of 43 goals in his 56 appearances shows why he is relied upon. Jack Lenehan - Solid young midfielder who had an excellent season. Michael Potts - The anchor man in midfield. He had a fine season. Michael Donahue - A key player in midfield. When good, he is brilliant. Too inconsistent though. Curtis Jones - Experienced central defender who marshalled the back four well. Next Season Challenge for a play off place again. DazRTaylor
So with the club having a mediocre season in the league, I am quite enjoying my cup run. F. A. DazRTaylor
Youth Candidates Season 2021/22 FC United of Manchester So another "Golden Generation" and this time I agree. Some terrific players here, with quite a few going to be promoted to the first team squad immediately. Including a good goalkeeper! I am also loving the chap called Obi Obi. He is English with Nigerian as a second nationality. I forgot to post the candidates when they were trialists, so here they are having just signed for the club. DazRTaylor
End of Season Review Season 2021/22 FC United of Manchester League Table - We got off to a dreadful start and whilst we did recover somewhat, we were never in a position to challenge for a playoff place. League Fixtures 1, 2 & 3 - Some good form, though the start was appalling. F. A. Cup - A great cup run that ended in heartbreak, losing after extra time, in a replay, to Doncaster Rovers of League Two, who came back from 2-0 in the first leg and equalised in injury time in the replay. F. A. Trophy - Another terrific run, we made it all the way to the semi finals, before narrowly losing to Aldershot Town, 3-2 on aggregate. It was especially pleasing to compete so well considering Aldershot are playoff contenders in the league above. Pre Season Friendlies - Not too bad at all. Squad - It is getting better. I need some of the youngsters to develop otherwise we may be stuck in this league for a while. Squad Dynamics - Very good, as you would expect. Transfers In - None. Transfers Out - None. Youth Candidates - A genuine "Golden Generation" this year, with Kieron Boyd YP22B18 being the best of the group, though Thomas Pieroni YP21A17 & Aled Vaughan Gabriel YP22K27 also look fine prospects. Finances - Good cup runs boosted the banl balance which enabled the board to accept my request to improve the youth facilities. Hence the figure is lower than last year. Key Players Tunde Owolabi - Another fine season from our striker. Not quite as prolific as last season, but 28 goals in his 54 appearances is still an excellent return. Nick Ryder YP21D4 - The youth academy prospect has made the right back spot his own. Jack Lenehan - An anchor in the centre of midfield. One of the first names on the team sheet. Curtis Jones - A rock at the back who also chips in with vital goals from set pieces. Luke Griffiths - Playing at the heart of midfield, the 23 year old has proved to be irreplaceable. Next Season We need to get back into playoff contention. He is being tutored to try and get that up.
Hootieleece
I would work on his crossing ability by using Wing Back Training.....mostly because I see a down tick in his crossing and I tend to like TAA/Roberson type Fullbacks. In fact in Current save as FLA in Brazil I have been retraining STRIKERS as MR-W's and WB-S's!
DazRTaylor
No "Golden Generation" this year, but should be ok nonetheless. I need the central midfielder so I hope he is good. Hootieleece
Retraining is your friend when playing a youth only save. Even when you have terrible coaches and awful facilities. I'm sure you will find a DM among the legion of 5'9" CB's that can't head the ball that the regen system seems to produce in abundance. The "retrained" will never become a 5 star players but often become 2-3 star mainstays especially if they have good mental attributes. DazRTaylor
My left back is now rated as the best player at the club and whilst he has had only an average season performance wise, he is developing rapidly. DazRTaylor
Youth Candidates Season 2022/23 FC United of Manchester This year, we were told they were "an excellent group of players", though this changed to "Golden Generation" when they arrived. DazRTaylor
End of Season Review Season 2022/23 FC United of Manchester League Table - We were never good enough for the top four, though we always kept the playoffs within reach and so it proved as we finished in sixth place. Playoffs - Just like the last time we made the playoffs two years ago, we played Hereford away from home. This time however, we were very poor and lost one nil, thus ending our season. League Fixtures 1, 2 & 3 - Our poor form at the turn of the year nearly cost us dearly as we dropped to twelfth place. We recovered somewhat and finished in the playoff spots. F. A. Cup - We made it through to the first round before Colchester United got revenge on us by beating us comfortably. F. A. Trophy - A poor campaign this year as FC Halifax, who were in the relegation zone in the league above, outclassed us, sending us packing in the first round. Pre Season Friendlies - Just the two defeats, to Millwall & Hearts, otherwise very solid. Squad - We are getting stronger as the young players continue to develop. Squad Dynamics - Everyone still loves everyone else. Transfers In - None. Transfers Out - I trimmed the squad and let a few of fringe players go. Youth Candidates - A fantastic intake this year, with Ryan Jackson YP23E37 already one of the better players at the club. Stavros Sarrigiannis YP23C35 & Anthony Connolly YP23F38 are also players to keep an eye on. Finances - Not as good as last year as we are starting to lose money. I am not worried though as the vultures will be circling over our young talent soon enough. Key Players Tunde Owolabi - Our main striker appears to be declining in ability which is a cause for concern. His returns are also diminishing as he scored 20 goals this season, from his 52 appearances. Alan Benson YP22F22 - The left back has developed so much, he is now regarded as the best player at the club. That said, he had a poor season overall. Dean Curran YP21C3 - Central defender who made himself an automatic starter halfway through the season. Obi Obi YP22E21 - The right back dislodged Nick Ryder YP21D4 as the first choice. Developing rapidly. Özer Demir YP22C19 - A natural as an attacking midfielder through the centre, a position I don't use, he is being retrained to play on the wing and is doing a sterling job. Next Season Another playoff push. DazRTaylor
End of Season Review Season 2022/23 FC United of Manchester League Table - We were top virtually from the start until February, before we tried to implode. We recovered towards the end of the season though a 1-0 loss at promotion rivals Darlington dropped us back to second place. On the final day of the season, we drew 0-0 at Kings Lynn Town and after 90 minutes Darlington were also drawing 0-0, at Curzon Ashton, before Darlington conceded a goal at the death and dropped to second, enabling us to win the title in the tightest finish possible. League Fixtures 1, 2 & 3 - A cracking first half of the campaign F. A. Cup - A poor campaign, we did make it through two rounds before playing very poorly when losing at Chorley. F. A. Trophy - When it became clear we had a shot at promotion, I played a lot of reserves and it showed, going out at the first time of asking, 3-1 at home to Kings Lynn Town. Pre Season Friendlies - More defeats than usual, with Aberdeen being the only scalp of note. Squad - We continue to get stronger, though some players are getting upset when I turn down offers for them. Squad Dynamics - As good as always. Transfers In - None. Transfers Out - I trimmed the squad with youngsters not good enough and veterans on the decline being sold or released. We did sell one prospect for £100,000 to balance the books. Youth Candidates - A "Golden Generation" that disappointed. Mike Driver YP24B50 looks the pick of the bunch. Finances - We are in the red as we continue to lose money. I am now dreading the chairman selling a player over my head. Key Players Alan Benson YP22F22 - The best player at the club. Each transfer window it is getting harder and harder to keep him. Özer Demir YP22C19 - The Turkish left winger has had a sensational season. Obi Obi YP2E21 - The right back who displaced Nick Ryder YP21D4. Now firmly established. Adam Chapman YP22D20 - Central midfielder who has taken the place of Regan Linney. Dean Curran YP21C3 - A quality centre half who scores regularly too. Next Season Survival. Hootieleece
Could Nick Ryder be retrained as a right midfielder (MR/AMR)? Since he seems to have lost his spot in the team even though he seems to lead team in assists. Congratulations on Promotion. Plan on spending time in the VNL. I think it is the hardest league to get out of other than the Spanish B Leagues.

I think it is the hardest league to get out of other than the Spanish B Leagues. Thank you. He will be playing more this season, probably as an AMR as I used him there sometimes last season. I will be at this level for at least five years I think, if not longer, unless I am relegated first.
DazRTaylor
Well, it has inevitably happened. We lost our best player. We did receive a whopping fee (for my league) for him, with a 50% sell on clause. I looked into it more and am actually not as disappointed as I thought I would be. If you look at his performances, he hasn't been as could as he should have been:
Hootieleece
Wow. What a fee...I hope it goes into facilities or Professionalism. It take about $1,000,000 in bank to afford to go Professional.

KrKAlex
Hi @DazRTaylor, I am impressed by your work. I never managed to make my way with amateur club. How do you deal with players without having contract with them? I always had my best players leaving because they had no contract and I always find myself struggling and having to do panic buy and therefore never climbing to the Vanorama National League for instance. Keep up the good work!

Keep up the good work! Hi mate. We are semi professional, not amateur, so I can offer contracts, albeit part time ones. Thank for your kind words. KrKAlex
Oh ok, then my mistake. When I took ovr in Vanorama South I must admit I quitted quite fast due to this happening. But I did not look in details enough apparently.
DazRTaylor
It looks like a quality intake. Lots of green writing, which is nice. I don't use the AMC position though, so may be some retraining to implement.
DazRTaylor
Youth Candidates Season 2024/25 FC United of Manchester Another "Golden Generation", this group are ok, though I don't see any potential superstars.
DazRTaylor
End of Season Review Season 2024/25 FC United of Manchester League Table - Despite being very poor at home (twelve league defeats), our amazing away form (fifteen league wins) saw the club qualify for the end of season play offs. Play Offs - Despite beating Chester home and away during the league campaign, they proved too strong in the playoffs, as we lose in the first round, ending our season. League Fixtures 1, 2 & 3 - Strange home form and equally strange, though I don't mind this one, away form. We took one point from twenty one in our last seven home games. F. A. Cup - A dreadful performance at home to mid table League Two side Grimsby Town sent us crashing out in the first round. If nothing else, this shows the gulf between ourselves and the league above. F. A. Trophy - A poor performance as we lost at home to Harrogate Town in the first round, in a replay, having salvaged a draw in Yorkshire. Very disappointing. Pre Season Friendlies - A decent enough set of run outs. Squad - They continue to develop, though we clearly over achieved this season. The squad is now entirely home grown through the academy. Squad Dynamics - As you would expect, it is a big love in. Transfers In - None. Transfers Out - Just the two permanent departures, not counting those released and the obvious highlight is the £2.5m sale of Alan Benson YP22F22 to Reading. Youth Candidates - No superstars but enough potential to be labelled another "Golden Generation". Joseph O'Connell YP25B66 looks like the brightest prospect. Finances - Very healthy indeed, purely down to the sale of Alan Benson YP22F22. Key Players Stuart Bloomfield YP23G39 - The young striker has really stepped up since the departure of Tunde Owolabi. Often deployed on the right wing and finding some success there too. Özer Demir YP22C19 - The left winger continues to go from strength to strength. Although he is over it now, he had a huge sulk on during the season because I blocked a transfer to Football League club, who offered a paltry £12,500. Obi Obi YP22E21 - The right back continues to develop and continues to be one of the first names on the teamsheet. Dean Curran YP21C3 - Centre back who marshalls the defence well. Ryan Jackson YP23E37 - Usually playing the holding midfield role, he continues to improve. Next Season Another play off push.
