New Contract For Messi

Recommended Posts

I appreciate this is very much a first-world problem, but I'm really keen to hear other people's thoughts:

I'm about to go into the year 2022 on my Barcelona save, and the final year of Lionel Messi's contract. He's currently earning £1.2m per week, but when I tried to offer him a new deal the maximum the board would allow me to offer is £625k (even though I've got a spare £2m in my wage budget).

Unsurprisingly, Messi said no.

Is there any way that anyone can think of that I could persuade him to sign a new deal? Seems a bit daft to let him go on a free when he's still knocking in 30+ goals a season.

Is he over 32? Give it six months and your coaches will probably rate him as 'a decent player for Segunda División B' the way physical stats tend to go

Can you adjust your transfer budget to maximise your wage budget?

Often with older players, if you wait 6 months their wage demands will lower.

Turns out all I needed to do was wait - with 5 months left on his contract he dropped his wage demands by 600k!
